Shortcuts to desktop

I want to send a favorite on the desktop as a shortcut, but I get Windows cannot create the shortcut.  Check if the disk is full.  How do I do that?

I doubt that your system is so full that you can not create a shortcut - if that were the case, you would have many more problems (and larger) than all that.  If you want you can check by clicking Start and then clicking on the computer and check the C:\ drive for space (I bet you have a lot).

Try to go to C:\Users\\Favorites and click the favorite that you want to put it on the desktop and press CTRL-C to copy it.  Then go to C:\Users\\Desktop and hit CTRL + V to paste the favorite here.  You may need to reboot to make this effect.  This will place a copy of the favorite on your desktop (and not just a shortcut), but is expected to reach your goals.

If you're worried about performance and space on your system, here are some suggestions that can help you:

A great many things affect speed and performance, and the amount of space available on your system - especially the existence of various files and which is loaded on the system.  There are ways to handle this in Vista (and that you follow all the suggestions) - and of course the amount and type of RAM and the speed of your processor and motherboard (but I'll just discuss here the software solutions - you can go to your supplier/manufacturer of computers for hardware solutions, if some are available (I) for example, am maxed out at 2 GB of RAM in my motherboard and there is no motherboard better available for my laptop model).

To enhance your speed, to using Disk Cleanup: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76073-disk-cleanup.html.

Also do optimization: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Optimize-Windows-Vista-for-better-performance.

Go to start / search options and type msconfig and enter and then double-click on the program icon that appears.  Go to the Startup tab and uncheck any program that you don't need from start.  This will probably be the majority of the items here - otherwise most of them (some are needed as the AV program but more are there to make open source programs more quickly and make you believe that they are more effective).  This will free up a lot of RAM and a great help to make your system faster (but maybe not as long as you'll be able to see the difference - but maybe according to how many useless stuff loads at startup).

You can perform some of these tasks (and more that aren't entirely related) using http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm (which also seeks the malware).  I do it on a monthly basis only as part of normal maintenance, and I suggest you do the same.  Make sure that you select a full analysis - it will take a few hours (mine can take about 5-6) but can works in the background so start when he has enough time to complete.

You also want to have good AV programs and HAVE on your system (so no malware running in the background drain resources).  Windows Defender is a good PROGRAM.  The new, free Microsoft Security Essentials http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/default.aspx is a great AV / AM program that has one of the least impacts on resources and the performance of the system, according to reliable sources and it does the job very well.  If you are using MSE, you don't need really Defender (but you would with any other AV program).  I suggest also download http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php and it works every month to catch anything that might miss MSE/Defender.

If you follow these tips, and do this regularly (at least monthly), then I think that you will have faster to a machine as it is able to give material.

Good luck and I hope this helps.

Don t be angry with me, but who needs to know what you did on your laptop?

Maybe you have something has changed accidentally or installed any 3rd party applications that could have a bad influence on the settings of Vista (Yes, that is possible) or you get any Virus or malware.

You may be able to see the hidden files and system, because this option has been activated.
So, try to activate the hide option in the folder options.

Or you'll flip the BONE to the beginning!

  • Shortcuts from desktop to pictures keep replicating

I copied some of my images to a flash drive to a SD chip. I did the shortcut on my desktop to facilitate the process.  A week later I notied my desk full of shortcuts for the photos. I deleted about 100 of them and plus at least this number appeared. They will not stop replicating. I can't restore and Norton IS is fine. I ran Spybot and Adaware and no luck. Any ideas on how I can get this to stop?  It is only attached to 1 desktop profile.
    Thank you, Diane

If you have not corrected this, but you can try to open your desktop folder (top of your folder hierarchy: in 'my documents' or 'my computer', just keep hitting the button "mounted a record" until you get on the desktop). From there, you can select all the icons and delete them.
I had the same problem - I kept removing about 30 of them at a time and then they reappear when I turned my computer back on. My nephew showed me how to open the desktop folder where I found about 1200 on these stupid icons. He told me how it happened (something about a XP problem) I do not remember, but at least I'll never forget how to get rid of them

Do not try to write your own.  ;-)  No need to reinvent the wheel that is already on your system.

Copy of the who that can be found here:
    "%AppData%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\Shows Desktop.lnk"

You can put this shortcut anywhere.  This works.  Your just sends a command "MinimizeAll" - so what he does is JUST that.  ;-)

  • Shortcuts occationaly desktop network locations stop working and after a few minutes start working again

    7 x 64 access a file from the Windows Server 2008 Server.

We have records of project on the file server that access many people without any problem.  A user has shortcuts to these network folders saved on his desk.  Once a week or two, the user will receive the broken shortcut error message:

"The item 'dossierprojet' that this shortcut refers to has been changed or moved, so this shortcut works correctly."

Immediately, it can navigate to the folder by using a connected player or the UNC path with no problems.  After a few minutes the shortcut will start working again.  I created the shortcut by using a mapped drive and using the UNC path, but it continues to continue to occur.
