Should I have JRE on my Windows XP system?

I have a Pentium III 800 MHz Dell with 512 MB RAM and running Windows XP. Recently I got a technician to do a new installation. The system works well, however I noticed that I don't have a JRE on my system.  That I should?  It will slow down the system? Are their security problems?

I use Microsoft Security Essentials and Spyware Blaster.

I suggest you do not install JRE until you come across something he needs.
