Should I install 32 or 64-bit Windows 7?

Win 7 new (long) installation tips

I am replacing an old system and I switch to Win 7 to XP Pro.

Can I install 32-bit or 64-bit?
My primary software are:
Office 2007
Outlook 2007
THAT IS TO SAY 8
Quicken Premium
Photoshop Elements
HP printing software
Acrobat and Acrobat Reader
Labeler DYMO
Eve Online (and monitor of Eve, Eve fitting tool)
DivX
NewsLeecher
Secondary:
Company of Heroes
Railways of Meier
I am considering upgrading to Office 2010, but I don't have the installation of 64-bit O2007. All but the last two are available in 64
bit.
What is the included security? I use ZoneAlarm several years in lieu of XP security. I install ZA ISS?
Other than the advantage of the memory, what are the drawbacks to go to 64-bit?
Assume that everything in the new system will be Win 7 compatible. I plan not overclocking anything or push "envelopes". Video will be a card nVidia 400 series.
Are there considerations that I forgot?
Thanks in advance.
John

Hello

To add some good advice from Andre:

Check with the system manufacturer to see what are the choices you have on an older system
You should probably update the BIOS, chipset of low level drivers, as well as the major device
drivers upgrade to Vista or Window 7 32 and 64 bit.

32-bit and 64-bit Windows: frequently asked questions
http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/32-bit-and-64-bit-Windows-frequently-asked-questions

64-bit support
http://www.Microsoft.com/Windows/Windows-7/features/64-bit-support.aspx

Run the Upgrade Advisor, and check with the center of compatibility for your key features. Also
some system manufacturers have the online help and information for the upgrade to Windows 7.

Windows 7 Upgrade Advisorhttp://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/get/upgrade-advisor.aspx

Also check the Compatibility Center
http://www.Microsoft.com/Windows/compatibility/Windows-7/en-us/default.aspx

To see if you can run XP, Vista, or Windows 7 64-BIT, you will need to check with the system
manufacturer if it is 64-bit capable. Are there drivers 64-bit for all devices? To run 64-bit you
need 64-bit drivers (and the system must be able to run this version of Windows 64-bit).

--------------------------

Most 32-bit programs can be executed in x 86 mode in Windows 7 if they will run on it at all.

ZoneAlarm is not required for Windows 7 - using the Windows Firewall, which is more
compatible. Use a good antivirus - recommendations below.

Office 2007 will work fine on Windows 7.

Check with the other manufacturers of programs and devices to see if there are any Windows 7
and 64-bit issues.

==================================================================

Here's what I use and recommend: (these are all free and very effective versions.)

Avast and Prevx proved extremely reliable and compatible with all I have
launched on them. Microsoft Security Essentials and Prevx have also proven to be very
reliable and compatible. Use MSE or Avast and Prevx, Prevx 3 but not all.

Avast Home free - stop any shields is not necessary except leaving Standard, Web, and
Operation of the network.

Prevx - Home - free

Windows Firewall

Windows Defender (is not necessary if you use MSE)

Protected IE - mode

IE 8 - SmartScreen filter WE (IE 7 phishing filter)

I also IE always start with asset if filter InPrivate IE 8.
(It may temporarily turn off with the little icon to the left of the + bottom
right of IE)

Two versions of Avast are available 6.x and 4.8 x

Avast - home - free - 6.x stop shields you do not use (except files, Web, network, &)
Shields of behavior) - double click on the icon in the Notification area - real time Orange - click on the
Shield that you want to stop - STOP. To stop the Orange icon to show an error indicator-
Click on the Orange icon - top right - settings - click on the status bar - uncheck shields you
disabled - click OK
http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download

Avast 4.8 x - home - free - stop shields, you don't need except leaving Standard, Web,.
and the network running. (Double-click the blue icon - look OK. - upper left - Shields details
Finish those you don't use).
http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download#TAB4

Or use Microsoft Security Essentials - free
http://www.Microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/

Prevx works well alongside MSE or Avast

Prevx - home - free small, fast, exceptional protection CLOUD, working with other security
programs. It is a single scanner, VERY EFFICIENT, if it finds something come back here
or use Google to see how to remove.
http://www.prevx.com/   <-->
http://info.prevx.com/downloadcsi.asp  <-->

PCmag - Prevx - Editor's choice
http://www.PCMag.com/Article2/0, 2817,2346862,00.asp

Also get Malwarebytes - free - use as scanner only. If you ever think malware and that
would be unusual with Avast and occasional Prevx running with the exception of a low level cookie
(not much), to UPDATE and then run it as a scanner. I have a lot of scanners and they
never find anything of note that I started to use this configuration.

I hope this helps.

    Hi all

Have a bit of a crisis. I bought a mydaq for a college project, and can't get elvismx to install.

I use a laptop Sony Vaio of 64-bit win 8 and every time elvis tent to install I get the error "32-bit only" and the installation program quits. I tried several versions of the driver for elvis whose 4.4.

By using LabView 2012 sp1 (64-bit) if it makes a difference.

I'd appreciate any help I could get!

    Jim

ELVISmx will install for 64-bit Windows, but it will not install in 64-bit LabVIEW.  You will need to install LabVIEW 2012 SP1 32-bit and then you should be able to install the ELVISmx driver with support for LabVIEW.  This note should probably be included on the download page (I'll see if we can get it updated), but it is stated in the readme.

Update of a BONE with the SP is good enough. The other day I have updated Vista on my laptop to SP2. No problem. But the UPGRADE, for example Vista for Win7 is best done with a complete new installation.

I agree with Curt that Win7 is very stable and there is no need to wait for SP1. It may be convenient common enterprise environments wait for the first service pack to be released, but for a Publisher and with stability, illustrated with Win7, I think that approach is too cautious. However, before decide you on which system you want, either wait for CS5 to be officially announced (not rumors in the graveyard) this year (according to the expectations) and make your decisions or take the plunge now and maybe you may find that your choice has now been suboptimal, but it is always the case. Waiting will give you latest, faster and less expensive options, but you lose productivity now.

    Here are a few suggestions

1 make sure that you don't have any other versions of java on your machine

    2. run java-jar command directly from your JDK/bin folder, not anywhere else. You must use your JDK/bin/java command to execute the command

Don't forget to open the command prompt in administration mode.
