Sizes of pool linked Clone

We have licenses to run 100 concurrent jobs to one of our branches.  In view of this, I wonder if I should create pools with 50 workstations in each.  My thought is that 50 linked clones will easily run on a LUN (our default size) of 500 GB and it will segment the workstations some in case someone is never something arousing to a pool.  Should I think in that sense, or should I create just a large pool of 200 workstations?

Thoughts?

I don't see anything wrong with that.  For my part do not use reserves, but it is easily changed if you have problems.   Review you the guide to optimization of Windows 7 provided by VMware?

  • Automatic creation of pools (linked Clone) using powerCLI

    Hello

I am using powerCLI to create automatic pool (linked clone). I came across the following cmdlet in theVMware powershell integration white paper:

    Get-ViewVC - serverName < IP/domain FULL name >. Add-AutomaticLinkedClonePool-pool_id

    TestAutomaticLinkedClonePool - namePrefix pad - parentVMPath / < Center > < parentVM > /vm/

    -parentSnapshotPath / < cliché - > vmFolderPath / < Center > /vm - resourcePoolPath

    / /host/ < Center > < ESX > / resources - dataStoreSpecs / < Center > /host/ < ESX > / < datastore >

    -composer_ad_id < id ad composer >

Now, I want to help discover (with an example will be very useful) how you specify and how find you each of the following (as what do I put after each other):

    -parentVMPath

    -parentSnapshotPath

    -vmFolderPath

    -resourcePoolPath

    -dataStoreSpecs

    -composer_ad_id

Please give an example of each if possible.

    Thank you!

OK, I'll give it a try.

The parentVMPath parameter expects the path to the virtual machine that you want to spawn the pool (obviously).

Such a path looks like this: / MyDC/vm/MyVM

Where MyDC is the datacentername, the vm folder is hidden folder that contains the hierarchy of models and virtual computers, and finally the name of the virtual machine itself.

If your master VM is deeper in the structure of folders, just add the folders in the path.

    Ex: / MyDC/vm/Folder1/Folder2/MyVM

The parentSnapshotPath is similar to the previous setting, but obviously needs to point to the snapshot pool should clone.

Alan has a nice feature to recover the snapshotpath Updateand re-view pools calm.

The vmFolderPath is where the virtual machines that are created for the pool to be stored.

Similar to the previous settings, but now for the record once again.

    Ex: / MyDC/vm/PoolFolder

resourcePoolPath must point to a resourcepool.

Such a path will look something like this: / MyDC/host/MyCluster/Resources/MyResourcePool

Note that host and resources are again hidden folders!

datastoreSpecs: this is not the most obvious.

He wants the full path to a data store in a cluster that is specified by a resource pool.

See the function VVGetDatastorePath to determine the paths to vSphere Datastore objects

The composer_ad_id wants that the ID of the AD domain, in which the composer is a member server.

You can get this through to: ComposerDomain-Get | select composer_ad_id

  • Problem automated creation of the pools (linked clone or full clone)

    Hi all!

Two or three weeks ago I started to experience a very strange error in my environment. (vCenter and vSphere Horizon are version 6.x)

At the point where I'm trying to create a pool automated , using of linked clone or a full clone, the following error is displayed as follows:

«The selected snapshot is hardware version 7.» Only ESX 4.0 hosts or homogenous groups of hosts running ESX 4.0 can be selected. »

I know that there is a KB ( ) 1028489) reported this error, but it is applied to view 4.X and I'm running the version 6

I first thought it was on an old parent VMs and instant, so I created all parents of virtual machines and snapshot material the most recent help of virtual machine. But the error still there.

Is there any type of troubleshooting for this problem?

    Ideas are very much aprecciated.

    Thank you.

  • Discover 5.2 recompose pool linked clone - Wait for user to logoff - refresh immediately after logoff - connected on VM never reconstruct after the closing session or refreshment.

Lets say, we have 20 clones related hen who has refresh immediately after logoff. 10 people are connected to VM 1-10. When plan us a restructuring of the entire pool, one would expect that VM 11-20 would recompose afterwards, as the newspaper of people out of 1-10 of Vm, the VM redial for the new replica. Instead, VM 1-10 are refreshing to a control point and recomposing replica ever again. It seems that when refresh after logging has not been defined, recompose work properly. These two elements are mutually exclusive?

    I guess that's what you're talking about?  http://KB.VMware.com/kb/2006707

If so, Yes, this is a known problem, updating of log will cancel and replace a Redial on newspaper.  I raise this issue until I got was blue and you have heard that it will be corrected in a future version

For now, I do it manually reconstructs in the pool > inventory tab > desktops (see composer details) > right-click on desktop > redial.  Usually, I do on a single desktop computer and let the replica to create and lots of then recomposed.  As recompose and selecting force their users to disconnect will do the trick also.

  • Instant and linked clone automated floating pools

I am trying to understand the interaction between the image and the snapshot used to define the pool and pool record itself original.

For example; A snapshot is taken of an optimized image of Win7, call it the image of 'work '. No other changes are made in the image of 'working '. An automated floating pool linked clone is created from this image and the snapshot. In this case, since we use roaming profiles and folder redirection its my understanding that no changes to the workstations are stored on virtual machines. Because it would seem that no change is retained which would be stored in the snapshot, what purpose would serve the snapshot?

My organization takes images of maintaining not optimized as master of the images to install software changes and updates, and then their cloning off to pictures of work. These images of work are used to create our pools. (Should) a picture of work and the other snapshot allows to form several pools of condition there is no difference between the software needs of the different pools? Commissioning several pools is intended to prevent an entire segment of the company to be without a computer something becomes corrupted in one of the pools.

    Thank you in advance.

    H

The latter is used to create a replica that is a read-only copy of the virtual machine.   When your linked clones are created, they are related to the replica.

You can absolutely use snapshot to multiple pools, if you choose.

  • Linked Clone pools with fast and KMS

Here are a few things I'm still not clear on?  (1) what to choose fast as my process for related clones, creating bound within view Admin clone pool?  (2) where point desktop clone related newly updated to point to the KMS server?  (3) therefore to create a pool of related cone that I have to turn off the Parent virtual machine and take a snapshot and then choose this snapshot when I go to the floating pool linked clone process, correct?

When you create the master vm and before taking snapshots, make sure that its using the kms client.  Any machine that uses this key automatically discover host kms on your network and activate.  There is no need to specify in the settings of quickprep.  When I was with sysprep I put the key client kms in customizers, but quickprep just takes what is there and use it.

  • Printer drivers on the linked clones

    Hello

I have a pool Linked-Clone of Windows 7 using persistent discs... I want to configure a user that needs to connect to a printer using the LPR port. The printer drivers are not on the computer Virtual Parent. Stupid question, but are pilots registered with persistent discs? What I want to say, if I deploy the clone and map the printer using the LPR port, it will remain for a refresh/redial?

I know I could just try and see, but I have so many things going on right now, I thought it would be faster to post the question.

    Thank you

    Mike

If you have the drivers to the image of the mother, then the mapping must stay after a refresh or a restructuring.   If you need to add the printer to the clone, then it would be good after a refresh or redial.

  • Linked Clone - need a how to.

    To be at the front, I have never tried this product until now. I was able to follow the procedures in the guide of evaluators found here: http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/VMware-View4-Evaluators-Guide.pdf?source=web & cd = 1 & ved = 0CBQQFjAA & url = https :// www.vmware.com/go/view4evalguide & rct = j & q = % 20view % 204% 20evaluation % 20guide vmware & ei = pSQhTJDFNJCMnQe4rZhR & usg = AFQjCNGjtWI690tG9MfR-13xp7nf0mLFCw

Now, I was able to get a virtual desktop connection (individual Desktop) and now I'm on page 36, try the linked clone. Screenshots don't coincide with what I get on some images. On Page 36, he says the following...

First create the 10 office pools linked Clone and go through the same new process to create the complete clone - only without checking the checkbox highlighted.

But I have not yet created a linked clone how to 10?

Someone at - it an idiots guide on the implementation of the related clones? I'm just using the trial. I don't know if there's a limitation then if there are, please let me know.

    Thanks in advance.

The parameters of quickprocess is the part of the process that makes the unique clone and he joined the field.   You must specify a user account with permissions to join computers in your domain.

The script of post box where you can specify scripts to run against the clone, once it is built.

The area of the OU gives you the ability to specify that an OU in Active Directory for the virtual computer is to create in.

  • Is it possible deploy Windows 7 floating - Linked clone pool for 10 VDIs and licensing through KMS?

    Hi all

I would like to build a floating - linked clone pool for 10 VDIs and lincense them using KMS.

I read that the KMS solution is valid when you deploy more than 25 VDIs but if my VDIs are rebuild a few times during the day, why KMS does not work for me?

I have an installed KMS and I think the job properly, but when I build my Windws 7 pool for each computer I always get this message:

"Discover the State of the agent (16) composer initialization error: impossible to activate the license (waited 1275 seconds).

If anyone can tell me what I should do to fix.

    Thank you

What I do for this is to simply begin your pool with 26 machines and all have power upward.  Then just make sure all active and then reduce it down to the size you want.  Your environment might suffer a little performance while you do this, but it does the job for you.  A tip - don't forget to make offices and BONES.

  • Cannot start the master VM once linked clone pool is created

With the help of ESXi 5.1, I created 3 floating linked clone distinct categories of 10 clones each. Everything works fine until I try to turn on the master after the linked clones are available. I get an error:

Cannot open disk ' / vmfs/volumes/volume/vm/vm-000002.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on.

He made this 100% of the time. No exception. I manually loaded a basic system of Windows 7 x 64 flat and converted a x 64 and x 32 using the P to the converter V. All systems do exactly the same thing. All files are where they say the man should be.

I can attach some files are required. Just need help. Destroy my master and create whenever I dial the linked just clone pool seems exaggerated.

It is not the virtual disk controller that is causing the problem (I just mentioned in order to make you aware of it). What is most likely the origin of the problem is the format of virtual drive not supported (twoGbMaxExtentSparse) which is used for the virtual disk. I suggest that you follow http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2036572 to convert the virtual disk shaped ESXi supported, which should solve the problem. Please keep in mind that this will require free space on the data store (the size of the configured virtual disk size - ~ 233GB).

  • Image/replica/Final linked clone parent size

I need help explaining what is happening with our storage in our virtual machine system. We use the linked clone technology to create our VMS computer groups.

    1. my Windows 7 Image of Parent is 24 GB

    2. my replica created even if the cloning link is 5 GB

    3. my Final VM in the group is 12 GB

I understand that the final vm is based on the replica and has its OS DATA DISC and a DISC of DATA of the USER

I need to explain in detail why the final clone is bigger than the replica of 7 GB and I can not use the explanation of which is has a DATABASE operating system DISC and a DISC of DATA of the USER. I need help explaining what is created in each of these places and why it adds that much to the total used space of the computer of the created virtual machine for 12 GB.

    Any help would be great.

Your VM parent is your golden image.  It is a complete copy of any OS and you want to base your pool on applications.

Your reply is a read only copy of the gold statue.  Your virtual machine in your pool will be linked to the replica.

Your final VM is a delta based on the replica so file as the time passes and removal inside the virtual machine changing, it can grow.

The first thing I want is separate what my OS drive is my user data disk vs.  If your user 11FR data drive then your final VM size is not that bad.   You must also look at the age of your OS drive.  If it is a machine that works for more than a month and that you have installed different things to him like patches, antivirus DAT or applications since its creation, then he will develop enough large.   Your goal should be to maintain the OS drive as small as possible by avoiding the changes.  You can do this by using such things as thinapp for redirection of folder and application virtualization or profile included the disc of the user's data management software.   If you apply a bunch of fixes, you must update your gold statue and then recompose the pool.

  • addition of CPU/memory for desktop computers in composer linked clone pool

    Hi all

I want to add more CPU/memory for desktop computers in a pool of composer linked clone but I want to build a pool of test out changes first, while the production area is still in place. Can you screw with virtual material in the main image and then take a snapshot and build the pool of test out of it without him bring the clones in the production pool?

I think that the process would be as follows...

    1. modify the parameters of material on the main image of Win7

    2. run the main image and let it recognize the CPU and additional memory (probably needs to restart the CPU I think)

    3. close the main image and take a snapshot

4 create a new pool of test off the coast of this new snapshot

    Thank you!

Yes it may seem straight, it won't cause any problems. If you want to be very careful with your prod environment, you can just clone the base image and make your tests on it.

  • VMware View Linked Clone pool - SID change of virtual machines

    Dear community

This morning I had the good idea to use instead of quickprep sysprep to change the SID for all virtual machines in the linked clone pools. Why? Because the customer didn't only VMs and use KMS to activate Office and Windows, therefore at least 50 different sid. Well, I created a file of OS customization invited for Windows (OS is Windows 7) in vCenter (which is connected to view admin) and I did:

    Target Machine Virutal OS: Windows

Use custom Sysprep answer file: No.

Name: The name of the file

    Owners name: xy

    Owner organization: xy

    Diabate

VM name: Use the virtual computer name

    ProductKey: Leave blank

    Admin password: play twice

    ZimeZone: GMT + 1

    Run once: no

    Network: Typical with DHCP

    Domain: Credentials client area incl.

Operating system options: create new SID

Finishing, went to view Admin has created a new and Cust comments. to Syprep (Filename). Blended at the pool and it worked very well until the generalization starts... it stucks at regional settings, when I restart the same. When I klick net he asks me for a computer name and a password.

    Well:

    (1) why is this block here? Yes there are still stuck because I was not able to specify a locale, or if it is not needed? Why he can pop up?

    (2) why he asks me for a computername? I told her to use an existing one.

    (3) why he asks me a password? I told her what to use.

Well I toigh ok Let's use an answwer sysprep file that I've included a second cost of comments. file (withi the guest also reset SID). Well it works greate except the designation: I said in the answer file to use the variable % computername %, which is certainly the name of the master, so VDI does not change this name...

    (1) the sysprep answer file the rightway anyway?

    (2) how do I get the new name out of sight for the VM for example VM001 instead of Master001

If I check the comments cust. file without sysprep answer file I see there function which can crreate names for VMS as vim.virtualmachinenamegenerator (or something like that) is it possible to use sysprep as well? Well at the end, I just want to change the SID of the virtual machines each time they recompose is to have enough unique SID in the network! How do I need to do?

    Best regards

Duke is your main reason for the use of sysprep to work around the problem of SIDS?

We only use VDI on site for 700 + users and clients windows 7 and Office 2010 is activated through KMS.and we use quickprep because his headache free and easy.

I use the following to help with the problem of SIDS:

Manually to increase the number of KMS. Think Digital the application is clean.

Its very well explained in the link above.

  • How to change the computer name of existing desktop computers linked clone pool?

    Hello

I'm curious about something that has developed in our Organization.  New guidelines came down and we have to change the name of the computer for all of our offices to meet the new criteria.

I have many of our users is on the offices of Linked-Clone (automated pool, dedicated, assignment see 5.1) which will have their names have been changed.  I use a 'model' for the name of the computer.

I tried this before by simply change the settings of the pool, and then recompose the pool.  Recompose worked well, but NONE of the virtual machine names have been changed.  All machines, recomposed just fine, but keep the old name of the computer (non-compliant).

How can I change the name of the computer of my clone in an existing pool offices?  Maybe I have something wrong.  I'm doing it instead of having to create a new pool and move the persistent disks.  I would like to change the name in the settings of the pool and recompose, but it did not work.

    Scenario:
    See 5.1

    Automated cloning related pool

    Assignment of dedicated (persistent disks)

    Thanks in advance

It is not possible to change the name of existing workstations by modifying the settings of the pool. There is no way to make this happen automatically and in doing so manually would not seen happy.

Unfortunately, for dedicated pools, you will have more work to do. If you do not use Persona you detach the persistent disks and recreate virtual machines in the pool with this disk to create a new virtual machine with a new name to be generated.

If you use Persona you could remove all virtual machines and have Persona to extract profile data down to the virtual machine that would be entitled to the user when they connect then. This will cause all user installed programs go, but I hope that's not common if you are already using linked clones.

I encourage to go to the next page, click on the feature request form link and publish information on what you're trying to do:

    https://www.VMware.com/support/policies/feature.html

Notifications about features are reviewed by VMware and if you can get enough of your friends/colleagues notice to users to ask something often a solution will grow in any kind, nature or form.

    Hope this helps.

  • SYSPREP for windows 7 64 bit linked clone pool

    Hello

I'm trying to set up a cloning pool of VMWare View related with desktop windows 7 64 bit, but I'm having a problem with the sysprep command.

Maybe I did something wrong in the process.

    Here's what I did:

    * installed Captain VM

-> install a new windows 7 VM 64 bit VM (Ultimate Edition)

-> tools VM installed in the virtual machine

-> installed the agent of the view in the virtual machine

-> the master VM has added to the domain active directory

-> power off of the master computer virtual

-> taken a snapshot of the master computer virtual

    * Make the necessary prepearations ActiveDirectory

(creation of the organizational unit, etc.).

    * enabled View Composer in view administrator

    * created the linked clone pool:

--> in vCenter settings, I chose the parent VM

    + its snapshot

-> I also published the snapshot to the forwarding server

    -> in comments customization settings.

    I chose the sysprep method

-> 2 windows 7 syspreps were awailable to choice:

    'WIN7SP01' and 'WIN7SP1 '.

-> I tried the procedure at a time

Added some rights for some users to

    the linked clone pool

All the steps of the pool of linked clone in view administrator configuration worked without errors, the linked clone pool has been created successfully.

    THE PROBLEM:

When I try to connect to the clone related with the Client view, pool

It gives me the following error:

"This Office has currently no sources of funds available, please try to connect to this desktop computer later or contact your system administrator."

When I watch the console of all (10) desktop virtual machines in the vCenter.

I see the following error message as a popup on each of them:

"Windows could not parse or process the answer without assistance for pass file [specialize]."

"The settings specified in the answer file not applicable."

"The error was found during the processing of the component parameters [Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup]"

No idea what I'm doing wrong here?

The 2 syspreps that I could choose when creating pool related, "WIN7SP01" and "WIN7SP1."

were there to choose just like that, I've never done anything to create, is this normal?

If Yes, what is the difference between WIN7SP01' and 'WIN7SP1 '?

    any ideas?

"I've seen this before and I will say it was because of some kind of defective license referred to in the specifications of customization, which in your case would be WIN7SP01 ' and 'WIN7SP1.   These are not created by the sight and were probably created by the person who manages the vCenter instance because that is where they are stored.   I would check that the license specified with these customizations key are the correct keys to use with WIndows 7 X 64 machines.
