Hello

I am new to solaris and I want to create a raw device, how can I do?

Thank you

Yes. They can use the command dd (disk image) backup - where If (input file) is the raw device and of (output file) is a tape drive or a backup device.

If they cannot, then, this means that we completely rely on backups RMAN to our DBs CARS. Right?

This should be the preference. Backup of a raw device using dd does not guarantee a database or the cluster that can be restored - as other processes are / can be write data, while dd is playing it to the backup. It doesn't have the same management and control functions and the flexibility of rman.

Do not use rman would be a mistake to IMO.

    Hi Steve,.

RAW or block devices are supported only when upgrading an existing installation using the already configured partitions. On new installations, using raw or block device partitions is not supported by Oracle Automatic Storage Management Configuration Wizard (ASMCA) or Oracle Universal Installer (YES), but is supported by the software if perform you a manual configuration.

    The above information is corret.
In my opinion, which is always supported in case of upgrade.
I did not write this because being support block and raw devices on this version.
With the release of Oracle 11 g 2 (11.2) database and RAC Oracle 11g release 2 (11.2), using the database Configuration Wizard or Setup to store files directly on the block or raw devices Clusterware Oracle or Oracle database is not supported.

    >

And by manual configuration, they hear

    # chown grid:asmadmin /dev/rdsk/cxtydzs6
    # chmod 660 /dev/rdsk/cxtydzs6

    Right?

Since the oracle user is the owner of the software grid in my case it would be

    # chown oracle:oinstall /dev/rdsk/cxtydzs6
    # chmod 660 /dev/rdsk/cxtydzs6

    Yes...
When the grid is that you are the owner to install Oracle Grid Infrastructure, in case a manual installation using raw for ocr and vote oinstall is the Group

  • How to OCR and the drive to vote of raw devices for ASM diskgroup

    Hello

I plan to upgrade my environment clusterware/ASM 11.1.0.6 to the grid
infrastructure 11.2.0.1 on Solaris sparc 64-bit.
I also plan on spending the OCR and discs of raw devices to ASM voting

    Thank you

create a disk group or use an existing disk group that matches your redundancy needs

    To ocr asm
    ===============
1 ensure that the clusterware version 11.2.0
    # crsctl query crs activeversion
Oracle Clusterware version active on the cluster is [11.2.0.1.0]

    2. replace the OCR file by the asm disk group
    #ocrconfig - replaced - replacement<+ASM diskgroup="">

3 remove the old file ocr
    #ocrconfig - remove

    4. check the integrity of the ocr
    $cluvfy comp ocr n - verbose

    SE asm votedisk
    ======================
    1. Add the voting disk to the asm disk group
    #crsctl replace votedisk<+asm disk="" groupname="">

Note: According to the disk group redundancy the required number of ocr and voting disk files will be created
    Normal: 2ocr, 3voting disc
For the great: 3 ocr, voting 5 disc

do not backup the ocr/votedisk dd in 11.2.0

  • RAW Device Mappings is grayed out

Hello everyone.  I'm a noob EXSi/VMware, so I'm a little out of my comfort zone.  I have a Supermicro motherboard with an onboard SAS controller which is supported in EXSi 6.  I have eight 4 TB drives, attached to the SAS HBA and 2 connected to the integrated SATA SSDS.  I was able to add all readers as warehouses of data and that works very well.  But I need to devote several full discs on a virtual computer and I have not been able to get this working as RDM option is grayed out any virtual machine, I try.  Tried to remove one of the hard drives for data warehouses (missing) but I still don't see it as an option (and now I can not see it when I try to add back as a data store but that's another issue).

I did research on this question and I tried to disable the RDMFILTER option in the advanced settings and no go.  I tried to run the process in article KB 1017530 (Raw Device Mapping for Local storage, I get the following error:)

    vmkfstools - z/vmfs/devices/disks/t10. ATA___TS32GSSD25S2DM___201009163653400631A4:9 /vmfs/volumes/APPSSD/RDM/rdm9.vmdk

Unable to create the virtual disk: the system cannot find the specified file (25).

I thought that I needed to create the folder ROW in the store, so I did and then I got a new message:

Unable to create the virtual disk: operation not permitted (65545).

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

You have created the file pointer correctly!

  • Frames and Raw Device Mapping

We used frames for some time on the storage array that we use for our 8 guests ESXi 5.5

Of course the frames must be enabled at the end

Array of the ports of kernel VM VMWare DVSwitch <>- <>- <>- Core Switch <>switch - Bladecenter

If I SSH in one of our guests and to make a vmkping s 9000 to a port on the Bay, it shows that the frames are working well

We bought another Bay of storage to be used strictly for home video of a surveillance system. I called cameras server that runs as a virtual machine. I added to it a 3 TB of this new array raw device mapping. Can I use the frames between the new table and the virtual machine that uses the RDM? I'm a little unclear on the string "end-to-end" when you use a RDM. The beginning of the part of the string is shown below. Do not know whether or not the RDM traffic crosses the DVSwitch

Bay <>- Core Switch <>- Bladecenter switch

When I SSH into a host that has one of the virtual machines with an attached RDM and use vmkping s 9000 to a port on the table ROW home that doesn't

I have a vlan not routable separated for all traffic storage

Usable for RDM frames? If yes how to do this job?

Yes, that's why I try a ping to 8960. It seems that the frames is enabled but due to the load of package, it is a lower number. Most of the devices and or switching equipment ran to 8960-8972. Here's why.

ICMP/Ping is not encapsulate the 28 bytes ICMP + TCP header. That is why the maximum size of the data part of package 8972 alone. Try the ping to your windows prompt to 8972 and let us know what you get.

    I hope this helps.

  • Going from raw devices to ASMLib

Hello, I decided to migrate from raw devices of ASMlib (Oracle 10.2.0.5, RHEL5). Seems to be that this is not a trivial task. Having 2 ocr, 3 voting and 1 data, all mapped as/dev/raw/rawX partititons.

Thus, base of data of shutdown, and then click stop the ASM instance, after this attempt to run:

/etc/init.d/oracleasm force-renamedisk/dev/sdb1 OCR1 (so this is a first disc OCR, which is now linked to/dev/raw/raw1), but still get an error:

    Rename the disk ' / dev/sdb1 ' to "OCR1": [FAILURE]

Any ideas, what is the problem?

Is NOT supported to install files Oracle Clusterware (Oracle Cluster registry) and the files on disc with right to vote in groups of disks ASM Oracle 11.1 and prerequisites.

Is supported for install files Oracle Clusterware (Oracle Cluster registry) and voting disk files in Oracle 11.2 ASM disk groups and above.

    Just it.

  • Migration of raw device to VMDK virtual card reader

    Hi all

I currently have 3 5.0.0 ESX 504890 hosts.  I have about 12 people who unfortunately have mapped drives of raw device.  I would like to convert VMDK to a data store.  I have VMware Standard, so I vMotion and Storage vMotion at my disposal.

I tried a migration of guests which has a hard drive of the RDM.  Steps are the following:

    1. Right-click on the client
    2. Select migrate
    3. Select change Datastore
    4. Click on advanced
    5. Select the data store that I want to spend.
    6. Select thin provision
    7. Click next

Once it's over it's now a VMDK created in the data store but when I go in the settings on the guest he always shows as RDM.  I'm doing something wrong here as the VMDK which was create shows, it has been changed at the end of the procedure.

Thank you for taking the time to read/post on my question.

Just to confirm. You have selected different datastore to where you want to migrate the virtual computer?

  • raw devices problem

Hello, I did a test Oracle RAC on Vmware ESX model, so it is two machines of Centos 5.10 with shared disks. I'm using raw devices for ocr, voting records and data, and without the ASMLib library.

After you install the clusterware and Oracle 10 g (2), everything was OK so far, when after the reboot of a node, not more shared disks exist anymore. For each related raw disk comand I got an error:

    #raw - qa

Could not open the raw device ' / dev/rawctl "(no such file or directory)

    #service rawdevices restart

    Allocation of raw devices:

    / dev/RAW/raw1->/dev/sdb1

Could not open the raw device ' / dev/rawctl "(no such file or directory)

Have not found anything related to this in/var/log Pourrait be happy if someone could explain how to solve this problem.

Yes, but keep in mind that the tree view of the devices is not only rebuild after a reboot of the system, but also the order of devices may be different, so by example/dev/sdc1 may not be the same after a system restart if you fix or remove another device or plug any USB. That is why UDEV must be configured to use the unique device ID to map storage devices requiring a persistent device naming.

For example, you can use the following entry to map for example current/dev/sdc1 on/dev/vote1

KERNEL == "sd *", BUS is "scsi", PROGRAM is "/ sbin/scsi_id" RESULT is "361a98001686f6959614a453133524171", NAME = "vote1", OWNER = 'oracle', GROUP is 'oinstall", MODE ="0640.

It is no longer necessary, not for Oracle, which use the O_DIRECT flag when opening a device, and no matter if it is a device or partition to use raw devices. But if you really want to match names to raw device, you can use the following text:

    ACTION == "add" KERNEL == "sd *", PROGRAM == "/ sbin/scsi_id", RESULT == "361a98001686f6959614a453133524171", RUN += "/ bin/raw/dev/raw/raw1 %N.

  • Creation of Raw Device Mapping (RDM) is not supported for local storage (1017530)

"Often, localstorage devices do not support VPD page 0x83 and can therefore be used for Raw Device Mappings (RDMS)." The content of the page 0x83 is used as a unique identifier for the device. For more information, see creating Raw Device Mapping (RDM) is not supported for local storage (1017530). »

Does anyone know if this is even the case for modern storage?

We are a dell shop, wishing to take advantage of the ability to create up to 64 TB RDM.

However, the storage of the host in question will be local SAS only.

Prefer not to have to merge muliple 2 TB VMDK into windows to make a record of 4.5 to.

Then projected on the presentation 1 x 4.5 CT rdm

If you plan to use a SAS controller, you should be able to do this. Your drive will be identified as a device of the naa, and you will be able to add as an RDM to VM - only with ESXi 5 (which can support more than 2 TB LUN).

  • How to migrate VM from\TO Raw Device Mapping (RDM) (data store)

    Hi all

I have aske on the migration of VM from\TO Raw Device Mapping (RDM) (data store)?

Thank you all for your support

If you are using vSphere 5, then you can SvMotion the VM attached to a RDM (physical or virtual) with no problems. This means that only RDM mapping file will be moved to another data store without any conversion of changes on the real disc of RDM.

Note: Do not attempt to change the format of disc thin or thick, which would cause the RDM disk converter for virtual disk.

    More info here: http://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/2012/02/migrating-rdms-and-a-question-for-rdm-users.html

If vSphere 4.x is used, hot and then migrate the virtual machine to another store of data will not change the format of the ROW, only mapping file will be moved. This is true for virtual and physical RDM.

However, the cold migrate the virtual machine to another Datatore will change the ROW to virtual disk format.
