raw devices problem

Hello, I did a test Oracle RAC on Vmware ESX model, so it is two machines of Centos 5.10 with shared disks. I'm using raw devices for ocr, voting records and data, and without the ASMLib library.

After you install the clusterware and Oracle 10 g (2), everything was OK so far, when after the reboot of a node, not more shared disks exist anymore. For each related raw disk comand I got an error:

#raw - qa

Could not open the raw device ' / dev/rawctl "(no such file or directory)

#service rawdevices restart

Allocation of raw devices:

/ dev/RAW/raw1->/dev/sdb1

Could not open the raw device ' / dev/rawctl "(no such file or directory)

Have not found anything related to this in/var/log Pourrait be happy if someone could explain how to solve this problem.

Yes, but keep in mind that the tree view of the devices is not only rebuild after a reboot of the system, but also the order of devices may be different, so by example/dev/sdc1 may not be the same after a system restart if you fix or remove another device or plug any USB. That is why UDEV must be configured to use the unique device ID to map storage devices requiring a persistent device naming.

For example, you can use the following entry to map for example current/dev/sdc1 on/dev/vote1

KERNEL == "sd *", BUS is "scsi", PROGRAM is "/ sbin/scsi_id" RESULT is "361a98001686f6959614a453133524171", NAME = "vote1", OWNER = 'oracle', GROUP is 'oinstall", MODE ="0640.

It is no longer necessary, not for Oracle, which use the O_DIRECT flag when opening a device, and no matter if it is a device or partition to use raw devices. But if you really want to match names to raw device, you can use the following text:

ACTION == "add" KERNEL == "sd *", PROGRAM == "/ sbin/scsi_id", RESULT == "361a98001686f6959614a453133524171", RUN += "/ bin/raw/dev/raw/raw1 %N.

  • Going from raw devices to ASMLib

Hello, I decided to migrate from raw devices of ASMlib (Oracle 10.2.0.5, RHEL5). Seems to be that this is not a trivial task. Having 2 ocr, 3 voting and 1 data, all mapped as/dev/raw/rawX partititons.

Thus, base of data of shutdown, and then click stop the ASM instance, after this attempt to run:

/etc/init.d/oracleasm force-renamedisk/dev/sdb1 OCR1 (so this is a first disc OCR, which is now linked to/dev/raw/raw1), but still get an error:

  • How to migrate VM from\TO Raw Device Mapping (RDM) (data store)

    Hi all

I have aske on the migration of VM from\TO Raw Device Mapping (RDM) (data store)?

Thank you all for your support

If you are using vSphere 5, then you can SvMotion the VM attached to a RDM (physical or virtual) with no problems. This means that only RDM mapping file will be moved to another data store without any conversion of changes on the real disc of RDM.

Note: Do not attempt to change the format of disc thin or thick, which would cause the RDM disk converter for virtual disk.

    More info here: http://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/2012/02/migrating-rdms-and-a-question-for-rdm-users.html

If vSphere 4.x is used, hot and then migrate the virtual machine to another store of data will not change the format of the ROW, only mapping file will be moved. This is true for virtual and physical RDM.

However, the cold migrate the virtual machine to another Datatore will change the ROW to virtual disk format.

  • VM cloning with raw device mapped drive

    Hey people... need help.

I have a virtual machine that lives on a 500 GB Lun. The virtual machine has a C: drive of 60 GB (OS) and a 1.5 TB Raw Device Mapped LUN.

My problem is I'm trying to clone this machine to have a backup of it. However when I try to clone a 500 GB or even 1 TB data store it says that I don't have enough space to do. I went and removed the RDM 1.5 TB LUN in cloning options so that it would only clone the C: drive. Still the same message.

Also I noticed that the data of 500 GB store the VM currently living has a hard 1.5 to file which I assume is the Raw Device mapped LUN. Why this creates a file if it is mapped SAN. How she even to create a file of 1.5 TB on a 500 GB data store?

Certainly, this seems to be the reason.  Instead of a clone, use vmware converter standalone and treat the VM as a physical server.  That should allow you to continue.  If nothing else, you can 'remove' the raw device of the VM, clone and then add the raw device to the original.  Converter should work well.

  • Cannot add Raw Device Mapping as hard drive

    Hello

We have 2 Server 2008 Virtual Machines (which are clustered) that make up a Cluster 2 node x.  The ESX servers that organize these VMs (ESX Server different on each) are connected to a San.  When I place these two VMs, I could add a hard drive "Raw Device Mapping" without problem - he could see data warehouses, I had Setup on the SAN.  However when I try to add a hard drive "Raw Device Mapping" on the 2 new virtual machines, the only options I have are:

    -Create a new virtual disk

    -Use an existing virtual disk

Any ideas why Raw Device Mappings is greyed out?

You add the second node RDM disk by selecting "use an existing virtual disk".  The ability to add RAW devices is only available for RAW LUN which has already been mapped to a virtual machine.

When you add the ROW to the first node, a mapping for the RDM vmdk file was created. It's that developed from the second node.

  • Boot partition of windows 7 64 bit as RAW device in VMware workstation 7.1

My setup is a laptop to dualboot Lenovo W510 with Windows 7 64 bit on a 200Gig partition and Debian GNU/Linux Squeeze on partition of 100Gig. I've got workstation 7.1 installed on Linux and it works very well for virtual machines. The hard drive is a SATA.

I'm trying to start the 64-bit Windows 7 as RAW device partition. After different assignment on this forum as well as on the web, I had gathered that I needed to change the entries from scsi to ide in the .vmx and too hard. Even with these changes, I get a BSOD 7 b error when starting windows VM. Previously, I had been able to do it on a Lenovo T400, with exactly the same Setup to dual-boot.

I also read a KB that SATA is not supported as a CRUDE device. Linux guests see the SATA as SCSI device.

Anyone has the fresh ideas on this or have met and solved this problem?

I stick it on my site: http://sanbarrow.com/p2v2008r2.html#patching

It shows how to configure the vmx file and how to fix the 7B...

    Patching - easy Variant

This procedure is used when otherwise the VM would start in a kind of bluescreen 7B.

This means that VMware is the target and that you configure the computer virtual with VirtualHardware type 7.

It applies only if the virtual disk is configured like this

    scsi0.virtualDev = "lsisas1068".

    scsi0:0. FileName = "imported.vmdk".

On the platform target start the virtual machine, newly created in the Windows 7 recovery CD.

After the initialization is complete, click CMD and run regedit.

Select HKLM, then Menu > file > load hive.

Navigate to the Windows directory on the virtualdisk > system32\config and select the file SYSTEM.

When asked for a name enter p2v.

    Then find the key

    HKLM\p2v\ControlSet001\services\LSI_SAS

and the startup type of the REG_DWORD value 0

Select HKLM\p2v, and then click Menu > file > unload hive.

You can now close regedit and restart.

The next time you start, you can start in the 2008 R2 or Win7 system. He should find the drivers and probably need to reboot when finished.

I set the block size 2 Mb in the data store, but when I try to migrate a RAw of 100 GB on the same VM migration works very well and I use the new virtual disk without problems.

  • VM 2 not clustered for a raw device mapping

Hi, I'm new in the world of VMWare. I watch discussions related to this issue, but the only one I met was on "more than a vm in the group for access to the raw device mapping drive". In this thread, we had to change the vmfs to a shared access mode.

    My question is:

I want to have 2 vm with the same raw disk bound, but only one of them is going to power. This virtual machine (it is power on) will work with the raw disk (data base), while the other virtual machine is turned off. In the case of the first vm failed, I disabled this virtual machine and turn on the virtual machine second. This second vm start working with the database in the raw disk. How can I do this? Is necessary how to access shared for this problem?

I hope you understand me with my poor English.

    Thank you very much.

What you want to do is simple, you do not need to use shared mode. Probably the best way to achieve your goal is to build your first virtual machine and get it all set up and then remove (do not remove) the RDM and the clone to the virtual machine. This will result in two virtual machines with the same host name and the same SID (assuming Windows here) - two IDENTICAL systems. Power on each virtual machine in turn (only lit at the time) and add the ROW as an existing drive. As long as one virtual machine is running at the same time, there will be no problem.

If you are upgrading a database in place (i.e. without reconstruction, without import-export), Oracle has no other choice than to support the application of raw device.
However, when you install the Clusterware 11.2 it cannot be installed on raw devices - one is not supported!

  • Impossible to safely remove external USB HDD - ejection of mass storage device problem

    Hello

I have a 250 toshiba external hard drive. "When I go safely remove device and click on stop, guests me that ' ejection of mass storage device problem and try later.

Is there a reason for this? As I have heard it is dangerous to pull the cord without stopping it first.

This happens usually when something is always access to the USB - HDD.
Yes, it s dangerous to pull on the cable, because you can lose some data and the file system may be damaged. But if you have a situation where you need the drive to take with you and want to just get out the cable to the USB port there is a little trick to disconnect the security apparatus:

Do right click on 'My Computer'-> click on Hardware-> click "devicemanager"-> go into "diskdrives"-> then you need to click on the drive that is your USB - HDD-> with the right button and then click on 'Properties'-> in the menu properties of this drive, you must go on "policies" and click on "optimize for quick removal"-> and then click OK and exit this menu and all-> perform a reboot-> closing information fact. :)

After that, it s safe for remove you your drive even if it s not ejected. :)

    Sriram salvation,

Have you tried the suggestions in the previous answer?

I suggest you to disable the antivirus application and check the status of the issue. Refer to the following steps:

a: you should see an icon for your Antivirus program in the taskbar notification area. It is usually at the bottom right of your desktop.

    b. click the third-party security software, you will see a pop up.

    (c) in this pop and select the option to disable, click on it.

    d. now third-party security software will be disabled.

Note: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you should not disable your antivirus software. If you need to disable temporarily to install other software, you must reactivate as soon as you are finished. If you are connected to the Internet or a network, while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.
