Going from raw devices to ASMLib

Hello, I decided to migrate from raw devices of ASMlib (Oracle 10.2.0.5, RHEL5). Seems to be that this is not a trivial task. Having 2 ocr, 3 voting and 1 data, all mapped as/dev/raw/rawX partititons.

Thus, base of data of shutdown, and then click stop the ASM instance, after this attempt to run:

/etc/init.d/oracleasm force-renamedisk/dev/sdb1 OCR1 (so this is a first disc OCR, which is now linked to/dev/raw/raw1), but still get an error:

Rename the disk ' / dev/sdb1 ' to "OCR1": [FAILURE]

Any ideas, what is the problem?

Is NOT supported to install files Oracle Clusterware (Oracle Cluster registry) and the files on disc with right to vote in groups of disks ASM Oracle 11.1 and prerequisites.

Is supported for install files Oracle Clusterware (Oracle Cluster registry) and voting disk files in Oracle 11.2 ASM disk groups and above.

Just it.

  • Raw device mapping ASMlib

We use ASMlib here, and I'm trying to understand what raw devices have been assigned to which ASM disks. For installation instructions, our drives must have been created using the "/etc/init.d/oracleasm createdisk/dev/sdg1 VOL1
«order mentioned on the main site of Oracle. However, orders for query records do not seem to give this link.

    For example, the following command:

    /etc/init.d/oracleasm querydisk/dev/sdg1

Will tell you if this device is in effect and the ASM disk, but it will not tell you that the label corresponds to the. In the same way

    /etc/init.d/oracleasm querydisk VOL1

you say that the disc with this label is an ASM disk, but will not tell you what raw device is mapped. This is the reason why I wonder about it myself and administrators system is trying to map our ASM disks here back to the LUNS and raw devices. Of course, this has not been documented at the time, that the disks have been created, while I started working in my current company. We can move databases of groups of disks and disk to ASM devices groups, but we cannot leave the names of raw device that would allow us to go back on the LUN device ASM labels.

  • Why the image size is smaller when going from RAW to Photoshop

My computer has dropped recently and I had to reboot Photoshop CS2 worm 9 and I had to download Camera Raw plugin version 3.7. Now when I

process a Raw file, which is normally an image of 54 x 36 inches, now, I'm getting a picture of 16.2x10.8. I can't find why it is to reduce the size of the file. Any ideas?   Help

    Thank you

    Don Spears

The 'size' of an image is a combination of its dimensions and its resolution. While the dimensions may change, the chances are that your resolution was changed as well. The largest dimension is prolly at 72 DPI (pixel pre inch), and the smallest dimension is prolly more at 300 PPI. Camera Raw has the ability to change that, but also to change the pixel dimensions, check what is the PPI to your second image. If it's more like 300PPI so you just a different ratio. If it is 72 DPI then you did something to downsample the image.

  • How to migrate VM from\TO Raw Device Mapping (RDM) (data store)

    Hi all

I have aske on the migration of VM from\TO Raw Device Mapping (RDM) (data store)?

Thank you all for your support

If you are using vSphere 5, then you can SvMotion the VM attached to a RDM (physical or virtual) with no problems. This means that only RDM mapping file will be moved to another data store without any conversion of changes on the real disc of RDM.

Note: Do not attempt to change the format of disc thin or thick, which would cause the RDM disk converter for virtual disk.

    More info here: http://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/2012/02/migrating-rdms-and-a-question-for-rdm-users.html

If vSphere 4.x is used, hot and then migrate the virtual machine to another store of data will not change the format of the ROW, only mapping file will be moved. This is true for virtual and physical RDM.

However, the cold migrate the virtual machine to another Datatore will change the ROW to virtual disk format.

Well, it's quite strange... I just used who link me (from a PC) and get my BIS account very well. You can, however, use the interface for device BIS - watch this demo that I you provided above for instructions on this. BIS is simply a service provided by your operator. The PC/Web site method and device interface - these are simply two different interfaces in the same Department, so using one or the other is not serious... they cause the same thing.

  • raw devices problem

Hello, I did a test Oracle RAC on Vmware ESX model, so it is two machines of Centos 5.10 with shared disks. I'm using raw devices for ocr, voting records and data, and without the ASMLib library.

After you install the clusterware and Oracle 10 g (2), everything was OK so far, when after the reboot of a node, not more shared disks exist anymore. For each related raw disk comand I got an error:

    #raw - qa

Could not open the raw device ' / dev/rawctl "(no such file or directory)

    #service rawdevices restart

    Allocation of raw devices:

    / dev/RAW/raw1->/dev/sdb1

Could not open the raw device ' / dev/rawctl "(no such file or directory)

Have not found anything related to this in/var/log Pourrait be happy if someone could explain how to solve this problem.

Yes, but keep in mind that the tree view of the devices is not only rebuild after a reboot of the system, but also the order of devices may be different, so by example/dev/sdc1 may not be the same after a system restart if you fix or remove another device or plug any USB. That is why UDEV must be configured to use the unique device ID to map storage devices requiring a persistent device naming.

For example, you can use the following entry to map for example current/dev/sdc1 on/dev/vote1

KERNEL == "sd *", BUS is "scsi", PROGRAM is "/ sbin/scsi_id" RESULT is "361a98001686f6959614a453133524171", NAME = "vote1", OWNER = 'oracle', GROUP is 'oinstall", MODE ="0640.

It is no longer necessary, not for Oracle, which use the O_DIRECT flag when opening a device, and no matter if it is a device or partition to use raw devices. But if you really want to match names to raw device, you can use the following text:

    ACTION == "add" KERNEL == "sd *", PROGRAM == "/ sbin/scsi_id", RESULT == "361a98001686f6959614a453133524171", RUN += "/ bin/raw/dev/raw/raw1 %N.

  • Grey raw device mapping

We are implementing vsphere 5. our host machine is HP DL 380 G7 and storage storage IBM DS. We are implementing SAS SAN using HBA cables. There is no iSCSI or fiber module. We want to implement file on vphere server using win Server 2008 R2 SP1. We want to access our data directly from SAN LUN and not vmware data store. Whenever we try to add disks of virtual machines, raw device mapping is gray. If we check in the adapters of storage, we can see available LUNS. I don't add it to the data store. still, it is grayed out. Why? Please help us

    Welcome to the community,

Please read http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1017704 to find out if your storage system supports the RDM and whether it's save to disable the ROW filter. Article is not tagged for ESXi 5.0, but I guess this also applies.

  • Cannot add Raw Device Mapping as hard drive

    Hello

We have 2 Server 2008 Virtual Machines (which are clustered) that make up a Cluster 2 node x.  The ESX servers that organize these VMs (ESX Server different on each) are connected to a San.  When I place these two VMs, I could add a hard drive "Raw Device Mapping" without problem - he could see data warehouses, I had Setup on the SAN.  However when I try to add a hard drive "Raw Device Mapping" on the 2 new virtual machines, the only options I have are:

    -Create a new virtual disk

    -Use an existing virtual disk

Any ideas why Raw Device Mappings is greyed out?

You add the second node RDM disk by selecting "use an existing virtual disk".  The ability to add RAW devices is only available for RAW LUN which has already been mapped to a virtual machine.

When you add the ROW to the first node, a mapping for the RDM vmdk file was created. It's that developed from the second node.

My setup is a laptop to dualboot Lenovo W510 with Windows 7 64 bit on a 200Gig partition and Debian GNU/Linux Squeeze on partition of 100Gig. I've got workstation 7.1 installed on Linux and it works very well for virtual machines. The hard drive is a SATA.

I'm trying to start the 64-bit Windows 7 as RAW device partition. After different assignment on this forum as well as on the web, I had gathered that I needed to change the entries from scsi to ide in the .vmx and too hard. Even with these changes, I get a BSOD 7 b error when starting windows VM. Previously, I had been able to do it on a Lenovo T400, with exactly the same Setup to dual-boot.

I also read a KB that SATA is not supported as a CRUDE device. Linux guests see the SATA as SCSI device.

Anyone has the fresh ideas on this or have met and solved this problem?

I stick it on my site: http://sanbarrow.com/p2v2008r2.html#patching

It shows how to configure the vmx file and how to fix the 7B...

    Patching - easy Variant

This procedure is used when otherwise the VM would start in a kind of bluescreen 7B.

This means that VMware is the target and that you configure the computer virtual with VirtualHardware type 7.

It applies only if the virtual disk is configured like this

    scsi0.virtualDev = "lsisas1068".

    scsi0:0. FileName = "imported.vmdk".

On the platform target start the virtual machine, newly created in the Windows 7 recovery CD.

After the initialization is complete, click CMD and run regedit.

Select HKLM, then Menu > file > load hive.

Navigate to the Windows directory on the virtualdisk > system32\config and select the file SYSTEM.

When asked for a name enter p2v.

    Then find the key

    HKLM\p2v\ControlSet001\services\LSI_SAS

and the startup type of the REG_DWORD value 0

Select HKLM\p2v, and then click Menu > file > unload hive.

You can now close regedit and restart.

The next time you start, you can start in the 2008 R2 or Win7 system. He should find the drivers and probably need to reboot when finished.

  • Virtual disk or a raw device

I have a virtualized Netware server.  I need a volume at least 700 GB space.  I have a SAN volume that is 836 Go.  It will be used for the storage of file user.  This could be any type of files.  I'm trying to figure out if make a virtual drive or map with Raw Device mappings.

"Large blocks do not increase storage overhead as subblocks are used for small files. Subblocks are still 64 KB. "- taken from Duncan yellow bricks.

Can I use Raw Device, or is it important?

It does not matter in terms of saving storage space. Either will work fine.

  • Best practices - virtual disk of Raw device mapping vs

    Hello

A small question about the configuration. What would be described as the best practice to configure a comment server that required a large amount of disk space? What is the preferred option:

1 - create a virtual machine with a mapping of raw device to the LUN (on a san)

    or

2 - create a virtual machine with another large virtual disk that is in a data store on the LUN (on a san)

    Thank you

    Dave

Kader you are limited with 2 TB in any case (except using the iSCSI software from within the guest operating system), the only arguments are:

    (1) use RDM if it is possible that you will connect to this physical machine LUN. Or you already have the unit number logic of a physical machine as a large file server.

    (2) VMFS use in all other situations - VMDK give flexibility, you can migrate the virtual machine where you want.

  • VM 2 not clustered for a raw device mapping

Hi, I'm new in the world of VMWare. I watch discussions related to this issue, but the only one I met was on "more than a vm in the group for access to the raw device mapping drive". In this thread, we had to change the vmfs to a shared access mode.

    My question is:

I want to have 2 vm with the same raw disk bound, but only one of them is going to power. This virtual machine (it is power on) will work with the raw disk (data base), while the other virtual machine is turned off. In the case of the first vm failed, I disabled this virtual machine and turn on the virtual machine second. This second vm start working with the database in the raw disk. How can I do this? Is necessary how to access shared for this problem?

I hope you understand me with my poor English.

    Thank you very much.

What you want to do is simple, you do not need to use shared mode. Probably the best way to achieve your goal is to build your first virtual machine and get it all set up and then remove (do not remove) the RDM and the clone to the virtual machine. This will result in two virtual machines with the same host name and the same SID (assuming Windows here) - two IDENTICAL systems. Power on each virtual machine in turn (only lit at the time) and add the ROW as an existing drive. As long as one virtual machine is running at the same time, there will be no problem.
