SP3 Install Fail

Have a Gateway computer.  Had to recover Windows OS.  Obtained as SP3 update and I have hit a brick wall.  It goes throughout the download process and then gives me an 0x8007F070 error code.  I tried everything I could find on all the forums, but he can't get through.  Any suggestions?

Follow-up-

I reloaded the software from scratch.  The only thing I did differently was to hold off installing Internet Explorer 8 until after SP3.  (Last time I put on IE8 and then tried removing it-without result).

I don't know if that makes a difference or not, but in any case, all installed with success this time.

Good to know. For others following this thread:

Always upgrade to SP3 before upgrading to IE6.

This error appears when there is a background running program in the machine, the best option is to shut down the machines all running processes are closed. Restart the machine, it should work.

  • KB2656353 install fails with error 0 x 643

    Dear Microsoft support community,

    (a) I have Windows XP Professional SP3.  I haven't used this computer
in almost a year, so the first thing I did was to hang the
computer, connect to the Internet and run Microsoft update.
There were 78 updates and 75 of them were installed successfully.
    (b) when I tried to install KB2656353, the installation failed with error
    0 x 643.
    (c) Googling turned up to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976982 .
I tried the Microsoft Fix it 50123, but which did not help.
    (d) I repaired then the .NET 4 Client Setup.  No joy.
    (e) I ran the auditor of .NET tool to
       http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2008/10/13/8999004.aspx

And he noted "the check is successful" for

    .NET 1.1 SP1
    .NET 2.0 SP2
    .NET 3.0 SP2
    .NET 3.5 SP1
    .NET 4 client
    .NET 4 full

    (f) I have concluded that uninstall and then reinstall the whole .NET
framework was not claimed for now, since it does not seem
as indicated in KB 976982 corrupted.

    (g) I checked the registry for .NET 1.1 hotfixes listed issues
    in http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2004/11/23/268934.aspx
in the "Info 9002..." section, but I have not found any.

    (h) I downloaded the update in a separate file,
    NDP1.1sp1 - KB2656353 - X 86 .exe, to http://download.microsoft.com,.
and tried to run as a standalone program, but it stops almost
immediately.  By redirecting the logging to a local file, I find
the update has not been installed, but I do not know how to interpret
the log file, which is much too large to be able to post it here in its entirety.

How can I get this update to install?

Whenever the computer is shutdown with in a few minutes, it restarts.  This is a new installation like 3 days...

Any help would be appreciated to grealty

    Hello

    Method 1

Refer to the article below and try the steps mentioned, check if it helps.

Windows XP restarts when you try to shut down your computer

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/311806

    Method 2

If the previous step fails then I suggest that you check to see if the problem persists in safe mode.

A description of the options to start in Windows XP Mode

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/315222

    Method 3

If the previous step fails, then it is possible that some third-party programs installed on the computer is causing the problem.

I suggest that you configure the computer in a clean boot state and check if it helps.

To help resolve the error and other messages, you can start Windows XP by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This type of boot is known as a "clean boot". A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.

See section to learn more about how to clean boot.

How to configure Windows XP to start in a "clean boot" State

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/310353

Reset the computer to start as usual

When you are finished troubleshooting, follow these steps to reset the computer to start as usual:

    1. Click Start , and then click run.
    2. Type msconfig , and then click OK.
The System Configuration utility dialog box appears.
    3. Click the general tab, click Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services , and then click OK.
    4. When you are prompted, click restart to restart the computer.
