SQL 2008 R2 RAID configuration

Ho everyone.

I m planning setup Esxi 5 in a HP DL380 G7 with 6 x SAS RPM 15 146 GB drives. The raid controller is P410i with 512 cache with battery.

This server will have 2 VM.

1 VM leaves DC, DNS, DHCP, and file. The second VM will have SQL 2008 R2 Standard. The actual size of the DB is 29 GB and should move on to 4 GB per year.

My scripts for configuring Raid is:

1 - raid 1 for the OS VM´s and RAID 10 for the SQL database.

2 - 3 x Raid 1. A Raid 1 for each virtual machine OS and Raid 1 for the SQL database.

3 - raid 1 for DC VM OS and Raid 10 for SQL VM (SO + database Volume).

What is scenario to obtain the best performance from SQL Server?

SQL VM will have 10 MB of memory.

Thanks in advance.

PVSCSI driver, take a look at split loads of work first. You will have several disk VMDK files. Each of them receives a virtual SCSI controller ID. The first hard drive will have the ID 0:0. The second should be 0:1.

Take the second drive and change it to ID 1:0. This creates a new virtual SCSI controller. You will see it in the list after you click OK to make this change to the ID. Select it and on the upper right to change the type. Select Paravirtual. You have just converted your SCSI controller that is better optimized for performance!

To do this after you have installed the VMware Tools (prereq) but before installing SQL Server, if possible. It is a drive letter possible change to reallocate the easiest to do.

Convert C: all non readers ID 1:0, 1:1, etc. until what you have mapped all. You're done!

For the controller cache, I recommend to all cache memory, you can eventually get out max to be installed before put you the server into production. It's a cheap way to get a decent bit of performance.

  • Configuration of SQL 2008 R2, Enterprise Edition for vCenter Server 5.1

    Greetings to all seasons.

Kind of a newbie here. That's my lab environment.

I have always used the vCenter Server install Simple option that also installs the shipped Microsoft SQL 2008 R2 Express edition.

Now, I do an eval of vSphere 5.1 and I want to manually configure a database server using the Microsoft SQL 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition.

I know how to install the database server and it works. But I do not know how exactly set up a database for vCenter Server.

I looked at the guide Configuration / Installation of vSphere and I don't seem to be able to follow the preparation vCenter Server databases section, because I'm not a person to the database. Y at - it any other guide or a blog, I can follow? I searched a lot and found everything I was looking for. Thought I would ask here.

Here are the virtual machines I have.

    Lab - DC1 (domain controller)

    Lab - DC2 (domain controller)

    Lab-SQL1 (SQL 2008 R2, Enterprise Edition)

Lab-SQL2 (SQL 2008 R2 Enterprise - subsequently configure failover clustering)

    Lab-VC1(vCenter Server 1)

    Any help is appreciated!

Happy holidays.  Here is a link to another site with a nice installation guide for SQL 2008 for VMware.  Version 4.x, published in lonesysadmin.net was very helpful, so I'm sure that the 5.x update (have not read through it again) must be all too packed with useful tips.

  • How config VM for SQL 2008?

I'm under ESXi 4 on a Dell of 710 on the SDCard with Raid 10. I have 12 GB of ram (soon to go to 48 since this server was going to be something else) with double Quad-cores. I am running WSUS as a virtual machine and SQL 2008 all 64 bits but uses SQL to the time as a virtual processor. All this in the same data store. I have an another data store on the same server and these 2 drives are Raid 1, but I have not yet used. Everything is contained in a box and will always be like that.

1 can be located the SQL and the virtual machines with the help of it in the same data store or leave I better to put on various Raids?

    2. I want to add Sharepoint which uses also SQL 2008, if it was another instance of SQL2008?

    3. the amount of ram (assuming I'm 48 concerts) and the number of processors should I call?

    Thank you

    Gary,

without knowing what we take on the workload, it is not easy to answer your questions.

However, we will try to find answers for you.

    Material:

S ' ensure that your hardware is listed on the HCL. (Server, RAID controller,...)

-For optimal performance, you must use SAS HDD and battery backup cache writing. Write cache - in my opinion - is essential!

    Licensing:

-You can save or lose a lot of money thanks to a license.

-With 1 license of Windows Server Enterprise (2003R2 plus) MS grants you the right for up to 4 virtual machines on 1 physical server.

-SQL2008 to take a look at the millisecond of license. Depending on the version, you will need to purchase a license by vCPU.

    Installation:

-Make sure you configure your data warehouses VMFS with the size of the desired block (1-8MB) for the maximum size of VMDK you expect.

-If you use Windows 2003 server, be sure to align the partitions of the virtual machine!

-Best practices for reading MS for SQL installations. (Alignment, partition NTFS block size,...)

Now we will answer your questions:

1.) depending on the workload and the SQL recovery mode (base, in bulk, plenty) it may make sense to have vmdk on different logical drives (spindles). With the hardware you have I recommend you to create up to 3 virtual drives (OS, data SQL, transaction logs). Put the OS and data on the RAID10 and newspapers on the RAID1.

2.) well, again it depends on the workload. If a SQL Server is not enough you can save the money for a second license of SQL.

3.) recommended is to assign as many vCPU and as much RAM as you need. You can always adjust the settings if necessary thereafter. Remember SQL server licenses when adding additional vCPUs.

    André

PS: I personally do not trust SD cards with the exception of my camera. I always install ESX (i) on the HARD disk!

  • Microsoft SQL 2008 Express

I'm having a problem connecting a MSSQL 2008 Express Server configured in Mode of Windows authentication by using the LabView database connectivity toolkit. I tried the following connection strings and received the following errors:

I know that this user has the right to change the database and I know that it is not a firewall issue, as I tested it with the firewall off the coast.

    Help would be appreciated!

It seems that, because I use the Windows Authentication Mode, there is no need to use the UID and PWD in the connection string. in fact, its use causes the error.

    DRIVER = {SQL Server} SERVER =\SQLEXPRESS.

    DRIVER = {SQL Server} SERVER =. \SQLEXPRESS;

Can be used when connecting to the SQL 2008 Express Server.

    Dear all,

I am trying to configure SQL 2008 clustering on VM workstation 8. Until now what I did I would describe you below.

    (1) install Windows 2008 R2 64-bit VM001

After the creation of the above VM, I packed two HDD a VM001 follow the steps.

    • I created two discs Quorum drive, then a drive information.

Then select each drive and delete in material management thing.

Now I sail in the directories where my Virtual Machines is kept and VM001, open the .vmx file in Notepad. and add lines folloing the end of the file.

Windows 2008 clustering requires the support of SCSI-3 persistent reservation on drives that is not provided by VMware "shared SCSI bus" configurations or one of the 'open source' iSCSI targets The best way to get W2K8 go clustering is to use something like target RocketDivision StarWind iSCSI (http://www.rocketdivision.com/) to offer 'shared' storage, then use the W2K8-built-in iSCSI initiator to connect to cluster storage...

  • Add 1 vCPU to sql 2008 comments

    Hi guys,.

Relatively new for vsphere, I wanted to confirm my config with experts here.

Initially, I set up sql 2008 comments on win 2003 32-bit.  On a raid 10 array.

I have installation 1 vCPU initially.

Performance was good for a few months. However, the workload has increased on the server, SQL server seems to be linked to the CPU.  The CPU is pinned to 100% by running a complex query a bit.

I'm under esx4 on a dell with 2 cpu phsical r610.  It is the only virtual machine running.

Do you think its okay to give the guest an another vcpu?  I hope that this issue of solve the CPU to 100% which seems to occur several times a day.

I think I have 8 cores to play with:

1 SQL Server comments 2 vcpu

    future expansion

3 more light load comments 1 vcpu (on a lower resource pool)

This should be straight, without conflict of cpu usage to worry?

    to be absolutely sure...

SQL Shutdown services and position the manual start

    Snapshot of the virtual machine

Windows 2003 - change the HAL layer in the Device Manager to the ACPI HAL of MultiCPU layer)

Windows 2008 - open msconfig, click on the Startup tab.  Click on Advanced Options.  Box for detect HAL (that it will have check every time that you start)

Shutdown VM - change the number of processors and the power up.

Check operation of operating systems, to reset the start SQL services to automatic, delete it the snapshot of the virtual machine and launch SQL (or restart for good measure)

    Pat yourself on the back.

Note: Windows 2008 R2 removed detect HAL... have not had the time to look to see, but I guess it does automatically now.

    HOW TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM?

    Hello

Ok. You have changed the RAID settings in the BIOS.
In my opinion, you can use the CD of restoration with the default RAID settings in the BIOS.
I mean that the RAID driver on the recovery cd was preinstalled and you have changed the settings RAID in the BIOS for the recovery CD did not work properly.

Do not mix the original Windows CD from Microsoft with the recovery CD. The CD-ROM of Microsoft the RAID driver is not, but on the recovery CD.

I checked the Qosmio manual I found on the Toshiba site.
If you want to install the original WinXP you must safe the RAID driver on the floppy.
In addition the in table settings BIOS RAID, make sure that the built-in HDD is set to 1RAID-0.

The RAID in the BIOS configuration settings are described as follows:
JBOD - parameters without RAID, Windows cannot be installed on this drive except by using the recovery CD/DVDs.
1RAID-0 - compatible set RAID. Windows can be installed on the drive
    2RAID-0 - 0 for 2 hard drives RAID set
RAID 1 -RAID-1 set for 2 hard drives (current only)
UNKNOW - State RAID except the State and settings (State only) above
No. Drive - no hard drive connected

If you accept the settings you must type a string: 1,2,3,4 then enter. At the end you must save all change in the BIOS.

You have suggested that you have the German language. If you want to read the manual in English you can download it from the site.

Hi, I have a XW4600 workstation with a hard disk of 500 GB.  The technical specifications of the workstation seems to suggest that it can work with a RAID configuration.

This is why I would like to add a second hard drive and install RAID for the purposes of resilience as the workstation is used for important purposes.

Couple of questions about it.   First, the RAID can be installed on this workstation?  Secondly, I know that I have to buy another hard drive with at least the same capacity, but don't I need to buy the part of HP number of hard disk or any disk hard do?  And finally, is it simple enough installation?

Thanks in advance for any help offered.
