Standalone update ESX4 host

I have a single host ESX 4, I would like to upgrade to ESXi 5.

The host is not managed using vCenter.

I just shut down all virtual machines, put the host in maintenance mode, use the ISO 5 ESX directly upgrade the host, then browse the host and download the new vSphere client?

Welcome to the community - that's pretty much all - have you seen the upgrade guide in Section 7, there are discussions of the upgrade to ESXi hosts--including using ISO - http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-55/topic/com.vmware.ICbase/PDF/vsphere-esxi-vcenter-server-55-upgrade-guide.pdf

That is right. I wanted to just make sure that you are aware that, before the update 1, Standard edition did not include vDR.

  • Migrate to vSphere/ESX4 host of the no routed private network to the public network mgmt mgmt

    Hello

I'm looking for advice on the best method to move guests to U2 ESX4.0 of a private network that is not routed on one vlan routed public. It is complicated by the requirement to keep all the VMs on the server farm running with no downtime / failure. Is this possible?

    Our farm config is:

1 x VM VC4 (32 bit) with two network adapters:

-1st NETWORK adapter connected to the vlan routed public (193.x.x.x)

-2nd NETWORK card that is connected to the private network not routed for mgmt/service console all ESX hosts. (10.0.0.x)

-Files local host on the vCenter server for DNS resolution of the ESX hosts on private non-routed network mgmt

10 + ESX 4.0 U2, console svc host 1, console svc 2 and all about vmotion network private not routed.

-The local Hosts file on each ESX host facilitates DNS on the network of mgmt ESX host.

    * We intend to keep the vmotion/vmkernel on the private vlan not routed

Here are the steps that I have written so far:

1 Vmotion all VMs off ESX host and switch to Maintenance Mode

    2. unplug and remove host ESX VC

    3. use VMware KB Article: 1022078 to change the address on the service console

4 update the hosts file on the VC and all ESX hosts with this ESX host's new public address

5 re - add a host to the CR

Q: I would be then able to vmotion between virtual private machines NET ESX host on this new net public ESX host?

    All suggestions welcome.

    Hello

To be honest, I have not fallen on this article before, except to say that a number of occasions I've reviewed or renamed hosts. When I do, it always works.

I usually restart the agents with the order you suggest just to feel safe.

Sorry, but there is no way to update/upgrade from ESX to ESXi, you need to rebuild the hosts.

  • Unable to connect to update ESXi host to vCenter

So I have a client who does the following:

Added several hosts, vCenter, went to install the updates using the Update Manager.  Host selected and selected re-mediation.  Server through the remediation proposals and restarted.  After server comes back online after the first reboot, it is impossible to connect to vCenter.

    Updated version: 5.5U3b ESXi

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Sean.

    Hello

I assume that your customer has forgotten to update the vCenter server before it has updated the hosts.

You must have at least version 5.5 U3b on the vCenter to manage the hosts of these version.

  • How do you update a host unique vm with Update Manager

I have a single vmware esxi 4.1 host on a remote site and vcenter is a virtual machine, as well as 2 other virtual machines.  It is the target of SRM as well.

In any case, I tried to address updates in the Update Manager and it expires just waiting to the power off vm.  There is no other host VM in this cluster is not as if something can vmotion off.  So I'm wondering because the Update Manager vcenter server running running on THIS host, if it were to close then maybe Update Manager could not perform?

How can I update this host, currently on 4.1.0 260247.

I have an another ESXi 4.0.0 171294 clocked at that site and it can also access the shared storage that can the 4.1 server.  I can't handle this in vCenter and vMotion things to him because I don't have a license to do.  But could I import vcenter to do this and it turns on and then try to restore the other host?

    Thanks for the help.

    patches are cumulative.

you don't need a vma, its good for multiple hosts.

just ssh into your box directly if you have only one box

  • vCenter Server is a virtual machine, how can I update the host

I have 2 guests in our environment, I have updated the host of the 2nd, but may not know how to upgrade the 1 host because vcenter server runs as a virtual machine on it. This has me thinking that I don't have the installation program as best as possible.

Basically, we have 2 Guest boxes and a small box of DC. I don't really want to run vcenter on the dc area. What would be the best soltuong for our environment? Can I keep vcenter as a virtual machine? If Yes, how can I update the host it will run on?

    Thanks in advance everyone... Chris

I was afraid of that say you that

Well in this case you may need to update the host manually (see for example http://communities.vmware.com/people/vmroyale/blog/2011/09/15/updating-esxi-5--single-use-esxcli-how-to) even with the need to manually update the host on which vCenter Server is running, I would always run as a virtual machine. There is usually not that many updates.

  • After 4.1 update, 1 host 'Error while running script control of health' - what to check next?

I had an ESXi 4 update 1 host, I used the Update Manager to upgrade to 4.1.  To join the cluster, I get a red mark and the host State

"HA agent on contains an error: error when running script control of health."

Two hosts in a separate cluster do not have the same question.

    So far, I have

    Reconfigured HA

HA HA/Enabled disabled for the cluster

    Restart management agents

    Server restarts

Put the server on another cluster

.. .the all result in the same error.

    Any ideas?

I am also trying to solve this problem, and although I have not found a solution, I started to create an article documenting what I found regarding this error. I think I'm very close to a solution.

UPDATE: I found the solution! Read the article below:

(Solved) VMware HA fails after upgrade to ESXi 4.1

  • Host file continues to go back to the original entry.  Impossible to update file host, questions HA

I installed vsphere4 with a host name and then wanted to change... I've updated the host file, / etc/network and even made a "newhostname hostname" but when I go back to look at the hosts file, it just goes back to the original host name.   HA adds an entry to the host file, which makes me believe that it doesn't.    I restart the network service, the server and it still goes back host name of the i put when I installed the server.  Strangely, when I do the hostname command, I get the correct new host name. but I can only ping the server using the original host name because that is what is in the hosts file.

any one seen this before? any help would be greatly appreciated.

    VCP3, VCP4, MCSA,Net, was DRY.

Change of name in vSphere client. All files will be updated automatically.

  • vCenter Server 4 as virtual machine by vSphere, ESX4 host

    Hello

I would like to ask if anyone has tried to do.

I create a virtual machine to run my vCenter Server 4 under a new brand, vSphere, ESX4, armed with other VM.

My question is, can I use vCenter Server 4 and the same vSphere, ESX4 host where the vCenter Server 4 is be managed host?  Is this possible.

I did this, but in the ESX and vcenter 4 installation guide his page 16 of the document makes it clear that: "the vCenter Server system is a physical machine or the virtual machine with access to a database taken in charge. The vCenter Server system must meet specific requirements. Also, make sure that the vSphere Client machines meet the hardware requirements. »

Here is the link to the document: http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r40/vsp_40_esx_vc_installation_guide.pdf

But if you plan to do that you have to ensure three points (shown in this link: http://www.vladan.fr/three-main-reasons-to-run-virtual-center-server-as-a-virtual-machine/):

    1. Disable DRS (level of automation of change!) for your VirtualCenter VM and make sure the document where the VirtualCenter Server (my suggestion would be the first area of ESX)

    2. Enable HA for the VirtualCenter server and set the boot at high priority

    3. Make sure the VirtualCenter server gets sufficient resources by defining actions

There is also another useful post that describes the advantages of the virtual centre running as a virtual machine:

  • where activate script of post-installation on an ESX4 host

    Hello

You used to be able to modify the struts - config.xml to allow scripted installation configuration to work, but even the script link is not there on the Web page of the hosts. Anyone know if the script file is formed in another location that the .xml file above is there any more.

This feature has been removed from ESX 4, take a look at the release notes: http://www.vmware.com/support/vsphere4/doc/vsp_esx40_vc40_rel_notes.html

VMware Web Access kickstart script Builder is not supported

For installation ESX scripted, the generator script VMware Web Access is not available in vSphere 4.0.

Solution: You can use the startup script that is automatically generated after an interactive installation. After the first interactive installation of ESX, the installer creates a script /root/ks.cfg in the ESX filesystem. This text reflects the choices you made in the interactive installation. For a complete list of the commands supported and a sample script, see the ESX and vCenter Server Installation Guide.

You can use the 3.5 ESX kickstart, but know there are some obsolete commands, so I recommend to check the documentation. This is an excellent point of departure for cofiguring kickstart for ESX 4 by Mike Laspina: http://blog.laspina.ca/ubiquitous/automating-vsphere-esx4-host-installations

  • ESX4 host sees 3.5 data stores, but sees no clients in the data store

This is my first post and I'm having a little trouble finding my way in discussion forums to find answers, please bear with me.

    The problem is I had

a system of ESX 3.5 - U2 with a data store external vmfs with VMs 5 or more. I have

installed ESX4 on 2 new servers and offers external storage (FC SAN) of the

ESX4 host, detached from the host of 3.5. Guests can see the vmfs LUNS, and I can't

Browse data warehouses and see virtual machines. 4.0 hosts see data warehouses, but

No 4.0 host sees one of the virtual machines. Any ideas?

I guess that you can browse and see the vm on the data store files. Therefore, you must select the .vmx file, right click and "add to the inventory.

  • Update Manager - host updates does not download

    Hello

I'm having a problem with the Manager to update to download updates to the host. For all lines created for guests basic IE host critical updates, critical host no updates etc. the number of updates = 0.

On the other hand, the virtual machine updates seem fine download. Please see the attachment.

Can anyone think of a reason why this is? Anyone had this problem before.

    Thanks in advance.

    Any help is really appreciated.

Depending on whether you have any custom schedules defined, I am tempted to uninstall the Update Manager, remove from its database and the repository, then put back in place. The update log manager files are in

    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\VMware\VMware update Manager\Logs

but I'm not sure that you will find all the answers. Saying that, you should be able to see something in vmware-vci - log4cpp.log.
