Migrate to vSphere/ESX4 host of the no routed private network to the public network mgmt mgmt

Hello

I'm looking for advice on the best method to move guests to U2 ESX4.0 of a private network that is not routed on one vlan routed public. It is complicated by the requirement to keep all the VMs on the server farm running with no downtime / failure. Is this possible?

Our farm config is:

1 x VM VC4 (32 bit) with two network adapters:

-1st NETWORK adapter connected to the vlan routed public (193.x.x.x)

-2nd NETWORK card that is connected to the private network not routed for mgmt/service console all ESX hosts. (10.0.0.x)

-Files local host on the vCenter server for DNS resolution of the ESX hosts on private non-routed network mgmt

10 + ESX 4.0 U2, console svc host 1, console svc 2 and all about vmotion network private not routed.

-The local Hosts file on each ESX host facilitates DNS on the network of mgmt ESX host.

* We intend to keep the vmotion/vmkernel on the private vlan not routed

Here are the steps that I have written so far:

1 Vmotion all VMs off ESX host and switch to Maintenance Mode

2. unplug and remove host ESX VC

3. use VMware KB Article: 1022078 to change the address on the service console

4 update the hosts file on the VC and all ESX hosts with this ESX host's new public address

5 re - add a host to the CR

Q: I would be then able to vmotion between virtual private machines NET ESX host on this new net public ESX host?

All suggestions welcome.

Hello

To be honest, I have not fallen on this article before, except to say that a number of occasions I've reviewed or renamed hosts. When I do, it always works.

I usually restart the agents with the order you suggest just to feel safe.

  • vCenter Server 4 as virtual machine by vSphere, ESX4 host

    Hello

I would like to ask if anyone has tried to do.

I create a virtual machine to run my vCenter Server 4 under a new brand, vSphere, ESX4, armed with other VM.

My question is, can I use vCenter Server 4 and the same vSphere, ESX4 host where the vCenter Server 4 is be managed host?  Is this possible.

I did this, but in the ESX and vcenter 4 installation guide his page 16 of the document makes it clear that: "the vCenter Server system is a physical machine or the virtual machine with access to a database taken in charge. The vCenter Server system must meet specific requirements. Also, make sure that the vSphere Client machines meet the hardware requirements. »

Here is the link to the document: http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r40/vsp_40_esx_vc_installation_guide.pdf

But if you plan to do that you have to ensure three points (shown in this link: http://www.vladan.fr/three-main-reasons-to-run-virtual-center-server-as-a-virtual-machine/):

    1. Disable DRS (level of automation of change!) for your VirtualCenter VM and make sure the document where the VirtualCenter Server (my suggestion would be the first area of ESX)

    2. Enable HA for the VirtualCenter server and set the boot at high priority

    3. Make sure the VirtualCenter server gets sufficient resources by defining actions

  • migrate to esxi free host in the cluster paid with minimal downtime

Please excuse my ignorance, I am very new to VMware and I am familiar with the concepts of other virtualization software, I used, but not some of the termininology, and maybe that's why my research are not turning to the top of what I need.

We had been using the free esxi hypervisor based to host some server hosts.  These servers are running a copy of our database and are used for reporting applications.  They are also setup with files VMDK provisioned very large and thick (> 300 GB!).  They were spread great for a year now.  However, we just bought the VMWare "vSphere 4 Essentials Plus" kit for the creation of a cluster of 3 machine, with a few redunancy and other features we wanted.  We also have a new san to go with it.  We are very pleased with the product and move to her!

On the other invited VM running on this host, (and several other hosts, its amazing to see how they arise) I stop the virtual machine and the vCenter Converter allows you to migrate the virtual computer to the new cluster.  At the same time, I would like to convert it to the thickness of a provisioning. However, because these clients have very, very big thickness provisioned HD, its research as they would take five hours or more to migrate. (other VM moved to essentially 1 GB/min)  These report servers can go without updates the master DB for several hours, but servers should always be available. I can't have them down for 5 hours. There are a lot of historical reports are refreshed by the end users.

Is it possible for me to do what follows somehow? I can't understand:

    • disable the DB update
    • closing comments, take a quick snapshot and then launch the guest.
    • While his copy running (and not updated) main and VMDK files file to the cluster (therefore only changes to files in the snapshot file)
    • on the new cluster, once copied (or during the copy) convert the VMDK to a thin provisioned (given that only about 85 GB of data is used in fact to this topic).
    • Finally, bring up new comments on the cluster at the same time I get comments on the old host (and ignore the changes that have taken place on the snapshot file, since its mainly a readonly report server)? and re - activate the DB update.

For end users who would be about 5 minutes total of downtime (basically, two reboots) which would be much easier to deal with than the 5 hours (each!) of how we are past other virtual machines would.

If the stand-alone host has the same type of CPU and family, you will be able to add it to the cluster otherwise just add to vCenter. You will always have access to other features.

  • where activate script of post-installation on an ESX4 host

    Hello

You used to be able to modify the struts - config.xml to allow scripted installation configuration to work, but even the script link is not there on the Web page of the hosts. Anyone know if the script file is formed in another location that the .xml file above is there any more.

This feature has been removed from ESX 4, take a look at the release notes: http://www.vmware.com/support/vsphere4/doc/vsp_esx40_vc40_rel_notes.html

VMware Web Access kickstart script Builder is not supported

For installation ESX scripted, the generator script VMware Web Access is not available in vSphere 4.0.

Solution: You can use the startup script that is automatically generated after an interactive installation. After the first interactive installation of ESX, the installer creates a script /root/ks.cfg in the ESX filesystem. This text reflects the choices you made in the interactive installation. For a complete list of the commands supported and a sample script, see the ESX and vCenter Server Installation Guide.

You can use the 3.5 ESX kickstart, but know there are some obsolete commands, so I recommend to check the documentation. This is an excellent point of departure for cofiguring kickstart for ESX 4 by Mike Laspina: http://blog.laspina.ca/ubiquitous/automating-vsphere-esx4-host-installations

  • Migration of VMs to other hosts in the cluster

    Hello

I am looking for a simple script to move virtual machines on a host and move them to various other hosts in the same cluster

    I found this

    $sourcehostname = (get-VMHost 'esx01') .name

    $clusterhosts = get-Cluster "Group 1" | Get-VMHost |
    Where-Object {$_ .name-notlike '$sourcehostname'}

    $vms = get-VMHost $sourcehostname | Get - VM

I understand gets all the virtual machines on the host and prepares to be moved inside other hosts in the specified Cluster

I just need a hand with the Move-VM part, I need to move more than one virtual computer at once, I don't know if I need runassync inside

Yes, vMotion VMs at the same time, you will have beed to use the parameter of the Move-VM cmdlet RunAsync.

Note that there is a limit on the number of parallel vMotions imposed by the characteristics of your vSphere environment.

But it's nothing to worry about in a script, vSphere will make the queue and activate for you.

You could do something like that

    $clusterName = 'Cluster1' $srcEsxName = 'esx01' Get-VMHost -Name $srcEsxName | Get-VM | %{
      $tgtesx = Get-Cluster -Name $clusterName | Get-VMHost |    where {$_.Name -ne $srcEsxName} | Get-Random  Move-VM -VM $_ -Destination $tgtesx -RunAsync}

The script runs through all the VMs on the node 'esx01.

He selects at random one of the remaining ESXi hosts in the cluster, then vMotions the virtual machines in asynchronous mode to their new ESXi host.

BTW if you have active DRS in that group with Automatated mode, you could just place ESXi node "esx01" in maintenance.

DRS will migrate then all virtual machines on that node to other nodes.

    Get-VMHost -Name $srcEsxName | Set-VMHost -State Maintenance -Evacuate

  • VSphere host in the DMZ

I run a server from Vsphere to only serve clients located in the demilitarized zone using the local drive.

I need to connect to our Vcenter server in our local business network.

What network configuration preferred for this for maximum security of the host and our local business network?

I was thinking about a pair of network adapters on a virtual switch just for the guests in the DMZ and for the rest of the virtual switch on our local corporate network.

Our networking group thinks have the host in the demilitarized zone and control access through the firewall would be better.

Or maybe a hybrid approach using a second firewall.

Any help on this would be appreciated.  I read the Vmware in the doc of the DMZ, but I'd like to hear from someone with experience...

    Thank you

    Hello

    Moved to the security forum.

I run a server from Vsphere to only serve clients located in the demilitarized zone using the local drive.

First of all, you must realize that there are at least 2 areas of trust of network at work here. The network of the VM for DMZ VMs and Device Management/Service Console for virtualization management.

I need to connect to our Vcenter server in our local business network.

Well the vCenter Server really should be a firewall from the rest of your corporate LAN within a network of virtualization management.

What network configuration preferred for this for maximum security of the host and our local business network?

2 natachasery for SC/Management Appliance, 2 natachasery for VM networks.

I would also use NO Local storage as Local storage can be damaged if the host has problems. That means bye-bye VMs. local storage is not a very good idea to a worry of availability or a concern for performance. ISCSI or FC are protocols very quickly compared to the local storage.

I was thinking about a pair of network adapters on a virtual switch just for the guests in the DMZ and for the rest of the virtual switch on our local corporate network.

2 for virtual machines. 2 for management NOT on the local network of the company directly.

Our networking group thinks have the host in the demilitarized zone and control access through the firewall would be better.

Or maybe a hybrid approach using a second firewall.

They don't understand virtualization if they offer it.

The real question is: how the DMZ is currently implemented? Is that the DMZ is currently implemented by using the switch physical separation or VLAN. If its VLAN, then where are they currently placing their TRUST? With themselves the most likely. If they use VLANs within the physical network you can use VLANs within the virtual network. If they don't think that this is the case, then they really need to know a little more about the coverage to the VLAN in the vNetwork regarding the attacks of layer 2 compared to the pNetwork (which is all about confidence and not authority). If they use the physical separation, then you continue to use the physical separation.

The first step is to migrate your vCenter and appliances of consoles/service management ESX/ESXi to a network firewall virtualization management separately. You also place a bunch of Machines to jump within this network so that Admins use RDP to access machines jump where they perform the vSphere Client and other virtualization management tools which should never be executed from within your network of business directly.

Once it is your management network is protected which solves the 3/4S of the current batch of attacks. Then you come to add the new cluster host in the network and let the virtual machines to live directly in the demilitarized zone.

Personally, I use the physical separation of the separate pSwitches and vSwitches jut for loads of the DMZ, but I do not have a host ESX JUST for the demilitarized zone. I have and it works too.

Any help on this would be appreciated.  I read the Vmware in the doc of the DMZ, but I'd like to hear from someone with experience...

I would be very interested to see their reasoning behind their suggestions and how the current DMZ is designed and works. This is the real question. Once you know this, you can make the appropriate vNetwork suggestions.

  • Possibility of setting up new vSphere 4 and pass the ESX 3.5 hosts?

The upgrade path makes me nervous (am I too paranoid?).

In any case, I have enough material and storage SAN to configure a new vSphere environment.

Is it possible to install a new enviornemnt and separate vSphere 4 and then migrate the 3.5 environment hosts? The doc has always start with VC upgrade to version 4 and be careful not to break stuff...

I actually finished a project a few days ago in this respect. I deleted the machine virtual old inventory, moved with the former VM of the LUN to the storage for the new environment group and added to the inventory again. Of course, if you do not use the same storage, it will be more in depth, but it certainly can be done. The plan was to do what weinstein said in his post, regarding the old host to the new Victoria Cross add, but I move the first LUN and had to finish like I did. It went well and I don't have problems with the virtual machine again.

  • HA is located on the hosts; If the server vSphere is unavailable HA will always continue to work?

Hello, I found the following question on the page Simonlong and I was sure it was incorrect.

Which of the following are valid reasons for the deployment of vCenter Server on a virtual machine (choose 3)?

    A. vCenter Server must be deployed as a VM to migrate using VMotion

    B. vCenter Server must be deployed as a virtual machine to support the recovery by using the Site

    Recovery Manager

    C. vCenter Server must be deployed as virtual machines for joining a group Linked Mode

    D. vCenter Server must be deployed as a VM to be protected by a high availability

    E. vCenter Server must be deployed as a virtual machine to support using vCenter data

    Recovery

    Answer: ADE

    I didn't know that d was correct.

So my question is, when HA is located on the hosts; If the server vSphere is unavailable HA will always continue to work?

VMware HA is intalled on the side of ESX and can also operate without vCenter Server.

vCenter Server is required to configure each host for HA, but then (per HA) is not necessary.

  • Can migrate a virtual computer to another virtual hosted by the same host computer?

    Deal all,

I have two questions and I need your help.

    (1) I wonder if a virtual machine can be migrated to another virtual machine that are hosted by the same host ESXi 5.0? (The host has a local hard drive). If possible, how?

    (2) if I have two stand-alone ESXi hosts (host A and B), each host has DAS (local storage) respectively. If the VLC Player is running on a virtual hosted by host A computer and playing a video stream from the Internet, (it is not at all access local storage). This virtual machine can be migrated to host B? (Suppose vCenter is installed)

    Any response will be appreciated.

    Cheng

You can clone this VM VM A i.e (require vCenter or vmkfstools allows you to clone the drive ONLY) and name VM B. do you want on original VM. Something happened to A VM, VM B you Savior.

vStorage the device (here). It will use your local or DAS.

  • ESX4 host sees 3.5 data stores, but sees no clients in the data store

This is my first post and I'm having a little trouble finding my way in discussion forums to find answers, please bear with me.

    The problem is I had

a system of ESX 3.5 - U2 with a data store external vmfs with VMs 5 or more. I have

installed ESX4 on 2 new servers and offers external storage (FC SAN) of the

ESX4 host, detached from the host of 3.5. Guests can see the vmfs LUNS, and I can't

Browse data warehouses and see virtual machines. 4.0 hosts see data warehouses, but

No 4.0 host sees one of the virtual machines. Any ideas?

I guess that you can browse and see the vm on the data store files. Therefore, you must select the .vmx file, right click and "add to the inventory.

  • The host is licensed with VMware vSphere 5 Standard. The license of vCenter Server edition doesn't support VMware vSphere 5 Standard.

So I disconnected a host to vcenter server and now I get this error message when I try to reconnect to this host.  The host has been previously connected without any problem.  Vcenter servers as esxi are 5.5.0.  Anyone had any experience with this?

    Thank you.

Unfortunately, I can't tell you for sure why it worked previously. Maybe it worked with an earlier version, or hosts have been added while vCenter Server was still running in trial mode. Anyway, if you have a license of Essentials for vCenter Server, you must also license processors Essentials the Essentials version is sold as a kit.

  • How to migrate VAPP to another host?

We have imported VAPP for Operations Manager.  There are 2 virtual machines in this paralytic.

We wonder how to migrate the VAPP to another ESX host?  We find that we can migrate individual VM but not the vApp.  My understanding is correct?

In addition, when the ESX host is in maintenance mode, the paralytic (or two VM) migrates to another ESX host.

    Your opinion is requested.

    Thank you

A paralyzed man is a logical container for one or more virtual machines. You cannot move the container full TIME from A to B at this point, and I don't know why you would want to do this? vSphere DRS has to take care of resource load balancing, you need not worry about all that.

  • Add 3.5 a vSphere cluster host

    Hey all!

It's my first update 4.1, bare with me!

I have a question about bringing a 3.5 with sub host the virtual computer to a cluster of vSphere.  I migrated 2 out of my 3 hosts at 4.1 and make them in my new Cluster (networking and storage is the program Setup and ready to go).  My older cluster always has the last host, all virtual machines running.  I can't take them down to those VMS, so I need a way to bring this host in the new cluster and vMotion these virtual machines to the new 4.1 hosts.  All VM VMDK files are on an iSCSI SAN and two virtual centres can see this SAN.  I tried converter on one of the virtual machine, but it asks me to create a new data store, not allowing me to use the current data store.

Now, my question is... If I disconnect the 3.5 host, can I connect from vCenter and add in the new cluster without causing problems to the virtual machine?  I know I can put in the maintenance and remove it, but brings down my VM.  Yes, I have all my configuration of license and Server 4.1 is ready to host the Server 3.5, until I have move the virtual computer out of it.

    Thanks for the help!

Perfect... Then, you can manage the last your new VC 4.1 esx and migrate each step of each virtual machine.

  • vCenter vsphere with hosts in esxi 3.5

    Hello!

I would like to know different things.

First of all if I migrate vsphere vcenter could I maintain my ESX 3.5i hosts?

Or I must have at least a host on vsphere and other in ESX 3.5 I have?

The second thing is if I update a single host is this host will write all the data on the storage? (guests on the storage worldwidenames)

    Thank you

    for the help

There is no reason for hepatitis a at least a better host. You will be able to connect to vCenter 4 and ESX 3.5 hosts using the vSphere Client (in fact, you'll have the VI Client and installed the vSphere client).

I have only a few concerns about maintaining this scenario for a long time because maybe you can run some buggy not covered by vmware - question example, sometimes that you have problems on the properties of the data store discovers with ESX 3.5 under vCenter 4.

  • Unable to add host to the dvswitch

I don't really know what I'm doing wrong, so I hope someone can point me in the right direction.  My goal is simply to add a new ESX4 host to an existing dvswitch.  Here's what I do step by step.

Open vSphere client, go to the home - & gt; the inventory - & gt; Networking

Click on "dvSwitch-DVUplinks" (the only rising dv group I)-& gt; Tab hosts - & gt; Right-click in the white area, select 'add host... '. »

    The add hosts Wizard opens.

I specify the host name, user, password - & gt; Next

Summary host is displayed (Dell PowerEdge 1950 - VMware ESX 4.0.0 buil-175625 "with no virtual machines listed - & gt;) Next

    I assign a valid license - & gt; Next

Choose the only possible place where the dvswitch - & gt; Next

    Then, the server is added.

However, it is not listed under the hosts for dvSwitch rising as the other host is.  Moreover, when I right click on the dvSwitch itself and add a host, the host is not listed, or the physical cards in it.

I don't know what to do at this point.  I used this exactly the same procedure on the other host and it worked just fine has also imported the standard Exchange provided with the host.

In regard to this specific host (vs1) is the only network on this config:

    vSwitch0 = vmnic0 vmnic1 (physical cards)

    Service console vswif0 = x.x.x.11 (vlan 107)

    VMKernel Port vmk0 = x.x.x.101 (vlan 105)

    VMKernel Port vmk1 = x.x.x.101 (vlan 106)

When this is allowed, vSwitch, vmk0 and vmk1 are configured so that mtu 9000.

If you dig into the Layer-3 switch configuration, the ports are set to mtu 9000 & jumbo frames are enabled.  The configuration is identical to the host is functioning correctly (ha6).  The iSCSI SAN & 1 vmk0 is attached to has an MTU of 8000 and is able to correctly traceroute and ping to the configured default interfaces and MTU 8000.  iSCSI works correctly on both hosts.

The VLAN 105 and 106 is configured on the dvswitch-ha6 is having no problem at all with the connectivity.

I can't simply add in the dvswitch vs1.

You have Enterprise Plus license in place? I ask the dvSwitch ability depends on having an Enterprise Plus license.
