  I use a drive external 250G hard SimpleTech SimpleDrive. I had plugged in a Dimension desktop computer and it works fine. I am abandoning the office and try to connect the external hard drive to my laptop Inspiron 9400.   Step 1: Connect an external hard drive (before iPod conneting or any other external device) and then check if the G drive letter is assigned. If the G drive letter is already used by any other device, then it cannot be attributed to other devices.

  Step 2: If none of the devices are using the G drive letter and then try to change the drive letter.

  D: is normally your partition recovery and between 5-15GBs in size.

  If the above is correct for your case, read this:

  Your recovery Partition was photographed on your hard drive during the production of your computer by the manufacturer for all of these reasons.

  Your D: Recovery Drive is should not be used for backups, defragmented, etc..

  There are backups on an external hard drive.

  To resolve the problems that have arisen with the recovery D: Partition, you will need to contact the manufacturer of your computer to remove all that has been added to it.

  For some reason, I can't find an answer to this anywhere.  I know that you can add more storage to a computer by changing the internal hard drive, but I'm not good with electronics and will attempt rather than.  Is it possible to attach an external hard drive to my iMac (21.5-inch, late 2009, OSX 10.11.3) and have it work as if the computer itself has more storage?  I'm not interested to move the files to the external drive to clear up space already a resident, I want the storage that is already 'the annex'.

  Go to computer stores, get an external hard drive of 1 TB capacity. Ask for one that you can just simply copy and paste to transfer files.
