Storage shared on ESXi 4

Hi all

I have two VMs CentOS system on two separate systems, connected to a shared logical unit number. Logic unit number is connected to systems with RDM. I want to change data on a virtual machine, and have the other VM see this.

I can get starting systems and to mount the drive. When I create a few files on one system I have to disassemble and reassemble the disc on the other system to see the files that I created.

Is there a way to share the LUN and have all the virtual machines see the same data. I am trying to create an HA NFS with the two VM serving files to the other virtual machines and systems on the network. I implemented the Piranha and IP failover works perfectly. If anyone has any other ideas please let me know

If you want simultaneous access of 2 virtual machines to the same vmdk (virtual disk) or RDM you must format it with cluster such as GFS or OCFS2 file system. ext3, reiserfs, xfs and jfs are not designed for such a thing, tey all require exclusive access to a single system.

Another way - Setup NFS on a VMs one share this four disc NFS. Get on the same location on the second virtual machine.

  • Is it possible to use GPFS or another build is a SAN storage shared for multiple ESX and ESXi hosts?

We have a license GPFS and SAN storage. I am trying to create a storage shared for multiple ESX and ESXi hosts share existing virtual machines. We tried once NFS, it of a little slow and consume too much bandwidth LAN.

Anyone can help answer? Thank you very much in advance!

It depends on your storage space.

You must connect all hosts to the same San, then follow the configuration guide of ESXi and specific documentation for your storage space (for sharing LUNS on multiple hosts).

  • Local storage and multiple ESXi hosts

Hi, I was wondering how vWorkspace manages local storage in an environment with a single server Vcenter and two ESXi, with a local data store each.

If I store a 'master' (I mean the gold statue) vm on the local storage of an ESXi, can replicate vWorkspace this virtual machine to the local storage of the other ESXi as Citrix VIAB?

If not, how can I use both my ESXi servers with local storage and maybe provide some sort of HA?

Am I forced to use a storage shared, if I want to be able to deploy clones related both to my ESXI?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello

Use vSAN, or no matter what virtual SAN Appliance as an iSCSI SAN storage to prosecute two storage facilities... You can replicate between the two servers and same LUNS are used by vWorkspace.

    Hello

I have the host couple ESXi 5.0 with license free of all is vmdk are located in storage facilities. Moving all the vm for local to the SAN storage data store, but the local data store attached failed to attend several ESX host as storage shared, is there a way that allow me to use the method of storage vmotion to migrate all the vmdk to centralize SAN without interruption?

I have a vcenter to manage whole army but only for normal administrative task. How can I set the local data store storage shared storage and able to present multiple hosts?

    Hello

Do you have the vSphere licenses?
If so, you can add the vCenter ESXi hosts, present SAN storage for ESXi hosts and perform Storage vMotion (migrate the data store) local storage to SAN storage.

You will need because the function of storage vMotion (migrate) is a feature of vCenter vCenter, this option is not available in standalone ESXi.

See the documentation here - migration of Virtual Machines with svmotion: vSphere Documentation Center

If you can accept interruptions of service, you can use the migration cold: vSphere Documentation Center

  • Addition of storage on server ESXi

    Hi all

I have a question about adding storage to my ESXi server, at this moment I have a Dell Power edge T610 which has 3 physical disks with raid 5. Would it not as simple as just adding a new hard drive? Or is there something that will have to perform on the server to increase my free space.

    Thank you

    Richard.

It depends on what exactly you want to do.  If you are wanting to add space to the existing RAID, then you need to configure the RAID as such through its control panel controller or application.  If you're only wanting to add another drive for more space for non-critical use, then you should be able to just add and go.

If you have found this helpful at all prices please points using the correct or useful!  Thank you!

  • Fact Oracle VM 3.4 (platform virtualization Xen in function) recognize VRTX Perc 8 storage shared?

    Hi all

We have recently acquired a VRTX Dell with 3 M630 Poweredge blades. We have updated all firmwares (network, iDrac, MCC and so on) to the latest version. Now I am about to install Oracle VM 3.4 on each slide and form a group of 3 knots.

I heard that the Oracle VM is not able to find the logic assigned (through the CMC) unit number because he can't stand not shared 8 Perc controller... If this is true, that I will not be able to create the cluster, or access the shared :-(storage

    Must have experience on this?

  • VMotion of a HA cluster to another cluster without storage shared

I was trying to vmotion that two hosts and clusters of data from a virtual computer store between HA (no shared storage). Web client gives me this warning, but the migration is successful.

    The warning message is:

If this is done, the virtual machine will lose vSphere HA protection. If you proceed with this operation and it completes successfully, vSphere HA not will try to restart the virtual machine after a subsequent failure. vSphere HA protection is restored when network partitions or disk accessibility problems are solved.

    Is this a problem?

given that your VM left cluster HA, warning to inform you that VM is not going to be protected by HA.

If your target cluster where you moved your VM is also active HA then he will protect even by HA in this cluster.

In short, this warning is more to inform you that your VM leaves HA protection. as long as you know what you do, no problems.

  • Storage shared by NFS for RAC

    Hello

I intend to set up a node 2 CARS. However, I have only the internal drive to use and no SIN /SAN. So I intend to share some of the ability of alternatives I have on the internal nodes 1 & 2 discs and make shared storage using NFS. However I have a few questions about it.

Q1. Since the NFS mount will indeed be file system media, this means that for the storage for the Cluster option and the RAC database that I can only use option 'shared file system' and not 'ASM '?

I think what is confusing me is that I think that I read that the ASM disks can be complete physical disks, partitions of a disk, SAN LUNS or NFS?

If this is the case then it suggests that I can create an ASM disk based on a NFS mount?

I don't know how to do this - any help / advice would be appreciated because ideally, I would have preferred to create candidate ASM disks based on the shared NFS disk

    Thank you

    Jim

You can use NFS as your clustered file system, but if you want to use ASM we top of the page so it no problem: dd to create large files on the file system shared, for example,

    If DD \u003d/dev/zero of = / mnt/nfs/asmdisk1 bs = 1048576 count = 2048

and set your asm_diskstring parameter to point to them (or specify them as devices to be used at installation time). It is very easy to set up and is fully supported by Oracle of the uncle. I recorded a few demos that include this a year or two before, Oracle ASM free tutorial

  • Configure a cluster of vsphere with 2 host with internal storage shared via HP LeftHand - doubts

Hi, I'm trying to create a two-node esxi cluster. These nodes will share their internal storage with HP Lefthand Appliance (HP StoreVirtual VSA). I need the first steps to create the cluster, or better, the macro blocks, IE:

    -install esxi on each node
-install Virtual Center and create the vmware cluster

    -Deploy the VM VSA...

I have a lot of doubts because of the reason why I can't have (installation of the HP guide said) virtual machines on other than the VM VSA itself VSA data store. How can I configure things? Creating first two warehouses of data, deploy VCenter on a data store, create the cluster, deploy VSA VM on the other data store...

    Can you help me please?

DL380G5 host as the location for the ODM is ok, but you may need to upgrade the host in any case since v12 FOM requires ESXi 5.0 or newer.

... what happens if the update fails and the hypervisor does not start more?

I know we can't answer a question with a question. Anyway, how do save you virtual machines on this host now?

It is true that the VSA VM cannot be migrated, but I can migrate the VCenter to a to another data store when I will have created the DATA of VSA data store (one that the hypervisor consider as an iSCSI target), I'm good?

I'm sure that it is correct. Unless I'm missing something, vCenter Server is just another virtual machine running on the cluster VSA VSA does not require vCenter Server to run.

  • ESXi 4.1 cannot read storage formatted by ESXi 5.1?

I'm not sure that this is the case, but I installed a bladecenter hs21 blades with chassis and some fiber chain stores. I then installed esxi 5.1 on the first blade and it works very well.

    However, I can not install a blade that already has say 4.1 on him because he never sees the storage. I then installed a blade and installed esxi 4.1 during this blade the same storage as esxi 5.1 but when I try to add new storage, I get the following error;

Call "HostDataStoreSystem.QueryVmfsDataStoreCreateOptions" of object "ha-datastoresystem" on ESXi "x.x.x.x" failed.

There is also an error that says that the storage is empty which is not like the first hs21 he uses as I type this.

    Hey,.

ESXi5 will create VMFS 5 by default, which cannot be used by ESXi4. It can use VMFS3.

When creating a data store, you can also choose to create as VMFS3 on an ESXi5 host so well.

  • Implementation of storage fibre channel (ESXi 4.1) with jumbo frames

I'm looking for 'official' instructions for the activation of the jumbo on a host ESXi 4.1 with storage fibre channel frames. I don't know if the instructions are different, or if anything else needs to be adjusted according to your storage space.

I looked at the instructions from this page here and it seems simple enough. It also seems that you can keep your groups of existing ports rather than having to delete and then recreate. If these good enough instructions apply it for the side host?

I saw this page for iSCSI storage so that made me think if the procedure differs according to the storage.

What is the reason for having to recreate them?

If you are in 4.1 that you don't need to recreate anything, just activate via the CLI.

And you can enable frames on a standard port group or is it just for VMkernel port groups?

You can turn on the VM and vmkernel exchanges. Together you must also make the "virtual cards", i.e.: on the Vmkernel virtual network cards and cards of virtual network in the guest operating systems. On the Windows 2003 server, I think you have to use VMXNET3, but on Windows 2008 the e1000 should support frames too.

As has been noted before just make sure that any layer two devices in the path is configured to allow the large frames. You can use this to confirm both Vmkernel and invited: http://rickardnobel.se/archives/992

  • The transfer server storage shared for vcloud Director cells

    Hello

I'm building a cluster of vCloud Director (3 guests) in our environment, but I was wondering about transfer server shared storage that is required for downloads and uploads the data among all cells, here is that excerpts from the Director Cloud installation guide for the same

    ==============================================================================================================

To provide temporary storage for uploads and downloads, shared storage must be accessible to all hosts in a cluster of clouds Director. The amount of storage to transfer server must have permissions writable by root. Each host must ride this storage $VCLOUD_HOME

/ Data/Transfer (in general transfer/opt/vmware/cloud-director/data/transfer). Uploads and downloads are the storage for a short time (a few hours a day), but because the transferred images can be large, allocate at least several hundred gigabytes at this volume.

    =============================================================================================================

I have some questions related to this,

    1. can I use storage iSCSI for this "shared forwarding server storage" or only a NFS storage will do.

2 storage is recommended according to the prospective of VMware.

    3. If anyone has references to the configuration for this storage documentation, please let me know.

    Thank you

    Keryan

It is not explicitly stated above all because there are several options and alternatives.

NFS is by far the easiest and also the easiest to wear but CIFS, for example, would work.  Like any other technique of file-sharing system that makes the blob of data readable and accessible in writing of all cells at the same time.

iSCSI is not enough to really say yes or no to the subject.  If you have a shared several cells and do iscsi lun on it ext3 file system, then the cells will tear system metadata of file into pieces in a relatively short deadline, because ext3fs is not designed to be multi-homed.

This isn't a limitation of iSCSI, or a lun SAN, or tours with virtual machines to share the same file several VMS vmdk, is put on top of this file system.

  • Storage shared between cluster hosts

    Hello

I have a number of hosts managed under a VC server clusters. I want to downgrade the ESX 3.5 cluster and spend all my virtual machines to my vSphere cluster. I intend to move the storage currently used by ESX 3.5 clusters as well.

Is this OK (or supported) or even possible for me to do the following?

    1. attach the storage used by the cluster cluster vSphere ESX 3.5 (so it is folded in TWO clusters).

    2. the servers from ESX3.5 to vSphere vMotion cluster cluster.

    3. turn off the cluster of ESX 3.5.

I guess it boils down to two questions.

    1. can you be shared between host cluster storage two?

    2. If you can, is it possible to vMotion between cluster hosts, assuming that all the vMotion compatibility checks are successful?

If the above is not possible, I'm guessing that a V2V of VMS ESX 3.5 would be the way to go, and I have to find new storage for the cluster of vSphere.

    Thank you

    G

    Hello

If you have a SAN vSphere-taking in charge, so there is no problem.

According to the CRA on your 3.5/vSphere ESX CPU hosts, you might have problems with storage vmotion/vmotion. One way would be to enable CVS, however requiring all virtual machines to be powered off.

But present the LUN 3.5 4.x guests and make a svmotion is not a problem if you have taken care of storage. (www.vmware.com/go/hcl).

Then you can just vmotion (if you do not have CPU incompatibility) virtual machines to new hosts, or stop and move.

  • Addition of storage internal to ESXi host

    Hi all

I have a Dell server that accepts SATA drives (no RAID configuration).  Currently, I have a 1 TB in this drive and plan on adding a second 1.5 TB drive.  I've never added storage to ESXi and wonder if I should wait no problem.  It is fairly simple to get ESXi to see the new disk and use it as a supplementary data store?

    Thank you

Additional storage should be detected. Use the vi client and go to the configuration tab select storage and analysis for new storage LUNS. Select the discovered storage. Once added, you should have a new data store.
