Style of character vs Format

I wonder what's the real difference between the Style and Format in the section of the Properties tab character. They both seem to do essentially the same thing. Any ideas?

Thank you

OK, let's go for a little typography lesson

"Styles" are real, it means that you will have the styles that are available for that font family. Italic, bold as a style has been designed to the breast than family and it is much more than having twice the character regular with a small gap between them (for "BOLD") or oblique the ordinary character (for emphasis). What I have described - twice for "BOLD", oblique for italics - is how the fake formatting is at work, that you will find next to the Format indication: they can be made to all policies, even those who don't have no bold, italic... in their family, but they don't seem as good or professional. For the most part, I call them the MS - way (I'm not a fan of MS learn more), if you use CTRL-B in an MS app - you just create a 'false' style, twice the same character with a small gap so that it looks more "BOLD".

I hope this makes sense? A true designer of course prefer real styles, but I have found that sometimes they don't are not fully supported when getting out it of containers of text with variables. In this case, maybe no one will see you 'Sin' by using a wrong format.

  • best judgment for paragraph styles, object styles and character styles

    I want to learn the criteria difference and use of paragraph styles, object styles and character styles. I know how to use them, but know about the best judgment and context, when you use would be better. Can anyone recommend links? I've been using adobe. Please don't suggest books.

    Paragraph styles are whole paragraphs.

    Character styles are letters or isolated words. Do not use the long of an entire paragraph. Do not set all the attributes, only those who are different for the properties of the paragraph Style. Unlike Quark Xpress, in InDesign are character Styles used only for the difference of isolated words.

    Paragraph styles can include the character automatically Style: Styles, GREP, nested Styles, initial letters, chips automatic & numbers and line styles.

    Object styles , set the frame of the object. They include separate definitions of all of the object, the stroke and fill.

    Object styles can also be applied to images in a frame and groups.

    Object styles may also include in the following paragraph Style and a style of paragraphs in automatic way.

    Object styles have several categories, you can choose which category is relevant to apply. For example, it is possible to apply the first style object to give the stroke and fill and apply a different object style to format the corners only and then apply the next. (With this method last only the applied object Style is linked).

    Styles of the opportunity to make global changes in a document. If you build in a smart way, they are a huge time saver. They can be stored in the CC libraries or libraries with objects that are applied to them. If you have created once these styles, you can use them again, and with one or two clicks, you can make their own to new document.

    My recommendation: the habit of Styles, name them always with the same names that it helps you to be accustomed to them and to work faster, much faster.

    There are more models: Table Styles, Styles of cell, the Master Pages and color chart.

  • Maintenance of the fill colors in styles of character through several documents HAVE

    I'll be very difficult to understand how Adobe Illustrator (CS6) manages styles of characters imported from different AI documents. If I create all styles of characters in a document unique .ai and only use that to in this document, everything works as expected - settings for colors, fonts and typography are maintained in the character style and newly added texts can be quickly style with the character style.

    My trouble starts when I want to re - use character styles in a new document .ai. In the menu style of character, I use the option import the styles of characters from another document, and that they import properly - all styles of work and text style as expected. But then i save & close the document and open it again it notes that character style entries are there, but the fills and strokes are all screwed up - fonts, sizes, typography settings are retained, but with a blue fill styles are suddenly filed with black, or another color.

    So, why is that happening? This occurs even if the nuances associated with character styles are imported to the new document as well. I read that all character styles are based on the 'normal' character style But, I tried a test ensuring that the style of 'normal' character was consistent between the two documents and I've known the issue.

    Here's a short video showing the issue I am experiencing: http://youtu.be/Z-BG7miwib8 (watch in 720 p)

    Points of view as to what I'm doing wrong would be GREATLY appreciated.

    Thank you!

    Kurt - the steps you sketched out in fact held the imported styles intact through several save/re-opening of the document! Thank you. However, other styles of character initially imported but not used at once had the same problem to return the black fill and stoke color.

    So, I guess that the workaround is:

    -import swatches

    -import of character styles

    -make a text for each import object style of character and style it with every style of imported characters that you want to keep intact.

    -copy / paste each text object

    -Save the document.

    Good find on workaround Kurt - I use it without a doubt. I have just a small range of character outside of my plan of work style. What a pain though...

  • Change a setting, now paragraph Styles no character longer apply long Formats

    Hi all

    I use InDesign CS4 ver 6.0 on Mac OS 10.5.8.

    My document has loaded in her paragraph Styles. When I click on the text in my document, the corresponding paragraph Styles are highlighted in the paragraph Styles window. But the text is not formatted with character formatting that is associated with the paragraph Style.

    I took a glance at my character Styles window, and I see that, regardless of the selected paragraph Style, the text on the page is locked in a single character Style, substituting the selected paragraph Style.

    I've must have changed a parameter but do not know which. Someone has any advice on how to get to InDesign to apply the formatting of characters specified in paragraph Styles.

    Thanks in advance for your time.

    Given that the others don't tell you how to remove the default character style setting, I'll do it. With no active text cursor, will the character styles, and choose [none]. Do theat in a doc open to fix this doc. Do it with no docs open to fix all of the new files.

  • cross references and styles of character

    I created a cross-reference in InDesign format that includes the paragraph text and the page number. I want the cross-reference to be regular and the page number itself to be bold. In the reference formats dialog box, I clicked in front of < pageNum / > and inserted a character Style from the drop of the icon "+" to the right of the definition. I typed in the name of the character style between the quotes, which is "BOLD". The definition given in the dialog box looks like this:

    "< fullPara / >" < name cs = "Bold" > page < / CS > < pageNum / >

    I clicked on the "Save" button. It does not seem serious if I click on the check box on or off for the character for the reference Style. The reference everything is transformed "BOLD" or firing everything is regular. I am not able to apply a character style to the part of the cross-reference.

    If anyone has a suggestion or can he enlighten me on that, I would be very happy.

    The format should look like this: "" on the page

    The beginning and the tag for the character style must surround the content that you want to assign.

  • GREP style - apply character style to the opening and closing parentheses surrounding a 0 (but not 0)

    Hello

    I'm relatively new to GREP style and will have to put in shape about 600 postcards containing various data (via the merger of data), including phone numbers. Consider the following data set:

    1. + 44 (0) 123467800

    2 (©) copyright

    3. (name of the program)

    I want to tell Indesign to stagger the opening and the closing parenthesis of the baseline (with a character style), but only the bracket that include a 0 and, possibly, without affecting the 0 value between them.

    Seems like an easy task, but it is impossible to find a solution. Could someone help?

    Thank you very much

  • All words with a certain style of character is automatically possible in the index entries?

    CS4 on Mac. I have a document where each occurrence of the first use of terms important was given a character style called "first." Is there a way I could do automatically each index entry?

    Hi Mary,

    This can be done using a script by Peter Kahrel.

  • Forcing of the styles of character on a new line?

    Hello. I have a request for information about to break a character on a new line style automatically. I can do this using F + R or a script, but I hope I can achieve through nested styles or a GREP style?

    In my example, the text in blue is the main "PoemText" paragraph style, while green is words imported from an XML document. The PoemPart1 character style (there are about 12 in the document, one for each page) simply changes the color of the word at the moment, but in this case I would like the word Maya to appear on a new line. Thank you!

    For example my topic levels "Ind - H1', 'Ind - H2', 'Ind - H3' have '(continued)' text, now my continuous text only get"Italic"character style for the declared position levels. Is it possible by script?

    Maybe this can be written more short. I have two ideas:

    1.

    var curDoc = app.activeDocument;

    app.findGrepPreferences = app.changeTextPreferences = null;

    app.findGrepPreferences.findWhat = "see(?=:\\x20\\(continued\\))";
    var firstFound = curDoc.findGrep();
    app.findGrepPreferences.findWhat = "(?<=see:\\x20\\()continued";
    var secFound = curDoc.findGrep();
    var allFounds = firstFound.concat(secFound);

    for( var n = 0; n < allFounds.length; n++ ) {
        var curFound = allFounds[n];
        var curPara = curFound.paragraphs[0];
        if ( curPara.appliedParagraphStyle.name == "h1" || curPara.appliedParagraphStyle.name == "h2" ||curPara.appliedParagraphStyle.name == "h3" ) {
            curFound.appliedCharacterStyle = "italic";
        }
    }

    app.findGrepPreferences.findWhat = "(?<=see):(?=\\x20\\(continued)";
    allFounds = curDoc.findGrep();

    app.findGrepPreferences = app.changeGrepPreferences = null;

    for( var n = 0; n < allFounds.length; n++ ) {
        var curFound = allFounds[n];
        var curPara = curFound.paragraphs[0];

  • Invalid character import format

    I accidentally created an import with a format & who's bad character for FDM. It allow me to create the import format, but now I get an error page whenever I try to access the Import Format screen. This prevent me to remove the problematic import format. I tried to export import formats, remove the bad in the file xml and re - import but it did not work.

    No idea how to do to remove this import format?

    The only way to solve this problem is directly in the database.

    There is no workaround available via the web or at the bench.

  • Overide of Styles of character of paragraphs of text styles

    Hello

    I did something that caused the following to happen:

    1. whenever I have put some text in ID CC victory, my text automatically turns pink and has a certain title font - this comes from one of my character styles.

    2. when I then selects a paragraph style, nothing happens. The paragraph style to display I return to character styles and select style - NO.

    Can you tell me how to get this action to stop and instead, to get a specific paragraph style to become default for all set text?

    Thank you, in advance.
