Support of file server data store Provisioning

I build a Win2012R2 file server.

Datastore1 = 800 GB

Datastore2 = 12 to

Datastore1 is taken. Datastore2 will have about 2 TB of space used for storage of copies of virtual machines. The rest is for file server.

What provision is recommended to use for a growing file server? Thick or thin?

Is it OK to grant MORE than Datastore2 space?

If other data on Datastore2 (other than the file server) begin to develop how the file server will make up the difference?

Thanks in advance.

Unless any 3rd third-party tool can do it, you must re - initialize the disk system. In addition to this, you will need to edit the virtual machine boot options and change the firmware of the BIOS to EFI boot. Another option is to shrink the partition from the current system of the customer for example 100 GB and then create a second partition with a GPT partition table.

Please keep in mind that backup and - most importantly - recover from these large partitions consume considerable time, and it may be useful to plan several smaller if possible partitions.

  • What best practices to remove a host server data store without emptying the contents of the data store

    Hi all

This question was probably asked a million times. the best practice to remove a host server data store without emptying the contents of the data store?

I have two clusters and I moved host group A to group B. host A is now to see data from Cluster Both A store and Group B datastore. We want that host A to store data in Cluster B. The Cluster a data store is not and can not be empty coz VM A Cluster using data warehouses. So I just unpreset the data LUN to host A store and Reanalyze the data store? Or there is a better way to do it?

    Thank you all

Yes that's what I meant - should have specified where virtual machines are running.

  • Add another server data store

    Hello

I can't seem to find anything about this...

I have new ESXi server and I need to move VMs from my old to new... but can not figure/find how to add the new server to the old server data store, so I'll be able to transfer my VMs directly.

    Thanks for the help,

Welcome to the community - if these are two autonomous servers without shared storage there are three ways to complete the move:

    1. Using VMware Converter Standalone
    2. Export the virtual machines from the old environment and import to the new server
    3. Use a tool like WinSCP and copy virtual machines manually between two hosts
  • Server data store will automatically get updated when the new file (with the same name) is placed in the landing area

    Hi guys,.

The data store server-side will get automatically updated when a new file with the same name is loaded in the landing area?

    for example

1 data store created for server-side get the file named UK.xls (he has 5 rows)

2 snapshot created for the above data store

    3. created with the snapshot process

After that if I remove 2 lines from the same file and load again to the landing (with the same name). So by re-running the process will take the last file OR do I need to reload the file in the data store every time when there is a change in the file. We also tried with option to work but the last file was not picking up.

Any help will be really appreciated.

Please lets us know your updates.

    Please advice

    Hello

When you create a snapshot, you create a snapshot whose task (provided that you use a data store server-side) can be run from a job. To refresh the data, run the snapshot in a job task. If you create a task at the time the snapshot and the processes that use it, they will automatically connect and will be 'upstream' data through the snapshot in the process. You can then choose whether it would be appropriate to write the snapshot or not (for the effectiveness of performance if you want to do the straight through processing) by activating or deactivating the bucket of data staged that the snapshot written to. The snapshot in the work task means that the data is refreshed.

For the work of design to the Director, you can refresh the snapshot by running again it manually in the context menu.

  • file is larger than the maximum size supported by the vmware data store: snapshot fails

    Hello

I'm having a few problems when creating a snapshot either by Veeam/vSphere client...  Here are the details...

VM is connected to lun 2 TB RDM in virual Server files mode. The configuration file is located on the datastore to vmfs with 750 GB (block size of 8MB)

I'm not sure whether the size of the data store creates a problem or anything else.

    All advice is appreciated...

    Thank you

What is the exact size of the RDM? A snapshot requires little additional space for hard metadata. Please take a look at http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1012384 (section: load calculation required by the snapshot files). For your ROW, this means, if the ROW is greater than 2032 GB, you will not be able to create a snapshot.

  • Completed by TimesTen Server data store connection

    Hello

I have a problem with an application to connect to a database, TimesTen, but the connection is being terminated by the server and I can't work the reason (error seems internal)

In summary, the application reads the blocks of data of a schema performs a treatment and then writes the output to a separate schema. When the read operation is simple (a table only reading), it runs without error. When the read operation becomes more complex (reading subdashboards using an IN clause, the JDBC connection reported that the connection is broken that the server came out unexpectedly. )

How this increase as a SR or searching through the existing SR and TimesTen bug reports?

    Thank you

    Ben

    Hi Ben,

Yes, the TimesTen server is blocked because of an internal assertion failure. My suggestion would be to first try upgrading to the latest version of 11.2.2.6.x because it has many corrections of bugs compared to 11.2.2.4.1 which is pretty old now. If this does not resolve the problem, then you need to open an SR via My Oracle Support. You will need your CSI to do so and it should cover TiemsTen (i.e. you must have TimesTen covered as part of your Oracle support contract).

  • Web Client 5.5 - How to download files from data store?

I can't get the file download of data storage works on my 5.5 b vcenter webclient. When you browse the datastore folder / there are only buttons to install the Plugin for integration Client, refresh, new folder and delete. The plugin is installed and I tried to use IE11 and Chrome.

It is a known issue and the workaround is to use an older version of the Mozilla Firefox browser.

    From the release notes: https://www.vmware.com/support/vsphere5/doc/vsphere-vcenter-server-55u1-release-notes.html#knownissues

Integration of client plug-ins can not work as expected if you log the vSphere Web Client using Internet Explorer 11 *.

If you log the Web Client using Internet Explorer 11 vSphere, the following problems may occur when you perform tasks related to the Client plugin integration:

    • Even if the Client integration plugin is installed, the following message appears when you try to import or to export a model from the FVO:
      Download the plugin Client integration
    • File browser does not download or download a file from the data store.
    • You can't get images of the CD/DVD drive.
    • The console of the virtual machine you may see a black screen with the following error message:
Remote console is not properly installed

Solution: use Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, or earlier versions of Internet Explorer to access the Web Client vSphere. You can also use vSphere Client instead of vSphere Web Client to work around this problem.

  • Download a file of data store

    Hello

is it possible to use the datastorebrowser to download/update a file from a data store?

As there is a way in the vCenter to do this should be also done with the viperltoolkit.

    Any ideas?

    Bye, Chris

    Yes,

Take a peek quick utility that allows for file reach your data warehouse - http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-50/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.vmware.vcli.ref.doc_50%2Fvifs.html

With the release of vSphere 5, you can now do so via vCenter Server, where as before, you had to go directly to a host. Although alive sample has not been re-written in support of vCenter Server, but you can change the script to connect to vCenter Server.

  • File server data - of RDM Volumes or VMFS?

    People,

I use vSphere Enterprise Plus 4.1.

I read on the RDM debate VMFS v. However, it seems that the arguments for VMFS assumes that you plan to run the operating system of the volume. In this case VMFS WINS.

I put aside for a couple of my operating system already VMFS volume. But one of the virtual machine will be a file server. I intend to add 7 x 500 GB of LUNS to this virtual machine. I don't plan to do snapshots of these volumes.

It seems that there is not much to skew the argument one way or another for each type of storage. In the absence of any compelling reason, I'm slightly siding with the RDM. It will give me more flexibility in storage 'pivot' if ever I need to upgrade and I won't get the red exclamation mark appearing in vCenter as I would fill my VMFS volume with a virtual disk file.

Can I ask for some advice on what would be a 'best practices' to add volumes that will be used to store the data?

    Kind regards

    Michael

From a management perspective I'd go for RDM, especially if she wants to be a file server.

Let's look at a few arguments. If you go for VMFS, this means that all I/o to the file server would be shared with the rest of the virtual machines residing on the data store (which, depending on your configuration might be ok). RDM also offer the advantage of being able to migrate to physics at some point, if the workload increases beyond the point where it makes sense to have a virtual machine.

Also, I wouldn't go all way on RDM, just for the volumes of data. So the OS goes on VMFS throughout the rest of the ROW. Do not think to much about performance, like lately the differences between VMFS and RDM are negligible.

  • Unable to browse the server data store

    Hello

I lost the files in my data store. I have two data warehouses and two of them had vm folders in there but tonight my vms unresponsive and when I try to restart they throw an error that a file is not present. When I tried to browse the data store, the two data stores back empty.

    Hey m,

can you go on the albums esx server into your virtualcenter

Try remapping to one of the existing NFS shares. You should get a message that the share already exists, but when you return to the summary page, you should be able to doubleclick on the NFS share and view folders (it's like trying to connect is enough to restore the existing connection)

Let me know how you go

  • Flat VMDK files after trying to delete files from data store

I tried to delete a VMDK file in a data store, because I thought that it was not in use, and I need space. I couldn't get the VM you are looking for the name of the VMDK file, so I thought that the VM has disappeared. Turns out that someone had renamed the virtual machine, when it was actually being used, so I could not remove the VMDK file.

I searched for the files with Powershell in a data store, and that's how I found this mysterious file in the first place.

After giving me the error that it couldn't be deleted, the file does not appear in the search more and the name of the file has been replaced by *-dish. VMDK, I think, and the column by specifying the Type just said file, instead of virtual disk. In addition, files not included in the research more.

Today, a day after, everything is back to normal. Everyone knows this behavior before and could tell me what happened?

Each virtual disk is actually 2 files: VMname.vmdk and VMname - flat hard

Unfortunately, the data store browser displays only the VMname... VMDK, but it gives the properties of VMname - flat hard. Use PuTTY, connect to the ESXi host via ssh, navigate to the folder of the virtual machine and use: the - lahtr to list the contents of an authoritarian way. You can also run: - ch to check actual use.

The system displays my VM was running without any snapshots, but in the data store, there are several delta as vmsd files, delta.vmdk files exist.

Create another cliché, and then use the option "Delete All" to delete all snapshots.

That get rid of the files?

  • Deleted virtual disk file and data store, just want to boot OS now.

So I had a VM win7, and I added a virtual disk on a new data store.

The new drive came out fine on windows as a new drive, and I was able to format etc.

Now I basically unplugged all the system and booted Linux instead of ESX and ran all over the disk on which was my data store.

Then I started in vmware and saw that the Windows VM was in a State of 'suspended' and if I try to take it back, he complains the missing disk file.

    "

Reason: The system cannot find the specified file.
Cannot open disk ' / vmfs/volumes/504e6c8a-b20d8bfd-1768-001e674dda97/win7/win7_1.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on.
VMware ESX can not find the virtual disk "/ vmfs/volumes/504e6c8a-b20d8bfd-1768-001e674dda97/win7/win7_1.vmdk". Check that the path is valid and try again.

    "

But it does not successfully. I tried to change the settings to remove the ' disk hard 2 "of its devices, but which is disabled since I assume that the virtual machine is suspended."»

I don't like on the virtual disk or any data on this subject, I have need to be in windows - I want to just start in

Is it possible to get out of this State without having to remove the entire virtual machine and re - install windows?

    Thank you!

    > and started instead of ESX Linux and ran all over the disk on which was my data store.

Sorry - that "ran the disk" mean exactly?

to get rid of the suspended state - delete the VMS, as well as all the VMS file references in the vmx file

  • < Unspecified file name > file is larger than the maximum size supported by the data store ' < indeterminate datastore >

    Hello

I use vSphere4 and I'm having problems, create snapshots of virtual machines.  I get the following error when I try and take a snapshot...

    File & lt; filename not specified & gt; is larger that the maximum size supported by the store data "& lt; not stated the store data & gt;

If I check all disks assigned to the virtual machine, the block sizes are ok.  All the disks are of block size of 1 MB and less 60GB, except one that is 600GB and a 4 MB block size.  There are also free space on each data store with being less 5,30 Go which I guess should be much more than enough to create a snapshot.

In addition, whenever I try and create a snapshot, it creates a file called SERVER - Snapshot1.vmsn, 2, 3, 4 etc. on the main data store.

Is it possible that because of the single disc of 600 GB, VMware prevents me from taking a snapshot?

    Here is the config...

See the attached file for disk configuration information.  Operating system drive is the drive where the snapshots are created.

Basic disks refers to all disks assigned to the virtual machine. Given that, by default, the snapshot is stored the vmx file, this data store should be able to potentially create a VMDK your largest disk size, assuming that you change every block in the vmdk.

In your case, it should support a snapshot that can potentially reach 600 GB to one of your drives, and so needs a block of size on the VMFS volume to support this. You can redirect the snapshots to another logic unit number and so to work around this problem (Storage VMotion is another option) limitation.

Trust, this clears up a little.
