Flat VMDK files after trying to delete files from data store

I tried to delete a VMDK file in a data store, because I thought that it was not in use, and I need space. I couldn't get the VM you are looking for the name of the VMDK file, so I thought that the VM has disappeared. Turns out that someone had renamed the virtual machine, when it was actually being used, so I could not remove the VMDK file.

I searched for the files with Powershell in a data store, and that's how I found this mysterious file in the first place.

After giving me the error that it couldn't be deleted, the file does not appear in the search more and the name of the file has been replaced by *-dish. VMDK, I think, and the column by specifying the Type just said file, instead of virtual disk. In addition, files not included in the research more.

Today, a day after, everything is back to normal. Everyone knows this behavior before and could tell me what happened?

Each virtual disk is actually 2 files: VMname.vmdk and VMname - flat hard

Unfortunately, the data store browser displays only the VMname... VMDK, but it gives the properties of VMname - flat hard. Use PuTTY, connect to the ESXi host via ssh, navigate to the folder of the virtual machine and use: the - lahtr to list the contents of an authoritarian way. You can also run: - ch to check actual use.

  • Web Client 5.5 - How to download files from data store?

    I can't get the file download of data storage works on my 5.5 b vcenter webclient. When you browse the datastore folder / there are only buttons to install the Plugin for integration Client, refresh, new folder and delete. The plugin is installed and I tried to use IE11 and Chrome.

    It is a known issue and the workaround is to use an older version of the Mozilla Firefox browser.

    From the release notes: https://www.vmware.com/support/vsphere5/doc/vsphere-vcenter-server-55u1-release-notes.html#knownissues

    Integration of client plug-ins can not work as expected if you log the vSphere Web Client using Internet Explorer 11 *.

  • deleted all vm outside the flat vmdk files - recovery?

    In a moment of madness I accidentally tried to remove a virtual machine from a data store. All updated files other than the flat vmdk file then deleted... It is not a critical system, but I still prefer to retrieve by using the existing if possible vmdk file. Since it is a flat file without descriptor I can not simply use it as basis for a new virtual machine, then how would you go to get it? In my view, a provisioning was not used, so should I just copy on a linux machine, it mount it and copy the relevant files or I can pick it up in esx - i?

    Edit: I should probably add that I know the exact size of the disc, but when I try to create new disks I can't manage to get split into flat vmdk / basic (with an idea of just using the new disks for the old descriptor)

    Take a look at sanbarrow.com for some details on this kind of issue, but basically, you can follow this process

    (1) create a new virtual machine with the same disc than the old size.

    (2) copy the file descriptor on file with just the file flat.vmdk left.

    (3) change the descriptor file (hard) and update to point to the old file flat.vmdk.

    (4) allowing the VM.

    (5) change the new virtual machine and delete the virtual HD.

    (6) copy the old file to the new folder VM with vmkfstools.

    (7) to change the new virtual machine and add a file of existing (using the new copy) drive.

    (8) to turn on the virtual machine.

    But before that, you can you

    1) check for us if the virtual machine still works

    (2) post a list of the folder where the virtual computer files were (with the-l option to show the size of the file).

    (3) can you tell me what VMware product and version are you using?  I guess ESXi 3.5 but it would be preferable to confirm.

  • Can I delete the local data store on esx 3.5?

    I have a client with vmware ESX 3.5 no esxi

    They have a local data store but it is formatted with a block size of 1 MB, so I can put only a 256 GB VM out there and I need to put a test VM with a larger size.

    I know that in ESXi 4 you can simply delete the local data store and create a new, but I'm not familiar with ESX 3.5, are there hidden files on the data store that the server uses?  If I search for the store there's nothing in there.

    Thank you

    Mike

    Hi Mike,.

    You can simply reformat your data store. Take a look at the following article:

    Of course, you must back up and delete any data you have on this data store before the format operation.

    Good luck!

    Hello

    ·        How you remove files from the MP3 player?

    ·        You can see the songs appear in Windows Explorer?

    ·        That is the MP3 player do you use?

    If you have the backup of the songs on your MP3 player, you can try to format the player and the re - sync the device and check what is happening.

  • Deleted virtual disk file and data store, just want to boot OS now.

    So I had a VM win7, and I added a virtual disk on a new data store.

    The new drive came out fine on windows as a new drive, and I was able to format etc.

    Now I basically unplugged all the system and booted Linux instead of ESX and ran all over the disk on which was my data store.

    Then I started in vmware and saw that the Windows VM was in a State of 'suspended' and if I try to take it back, he complains the missing disk file.

    "

    Reason: The system cannot find the specified file.
    Cannot open disk ' / vmfs/volumes/504e6c8a-b20d8bfd-1768-001e674dda97/win7/win7_1.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on.
    VMware ESX can not find the virtual disk "/ vmfs/volumes/504e6c8a-b20d8bfd-1768-001e674dda97/win7/win7_1.vmdk". Check that the path is valid and try again.

    "

    But it does not successfully. I tried to change the settings to remove the ' disk hard 2 "of its devices, but which is disabled since I assume that the virtual machine is suspended."»

    I don't like on the virtual disk or any data on this subject, I have need to be in windows - I want to just start in

    Is it possible to get out of this State without having to remove the entire virtual machine and re - install windows?

    Thank you!

    > and started instead of ESX Linux and ran all over the disk on which was my data store.

    Sorry - that "ran the disk" mean exactly?

    to get rid of the suspended state - delete the VMS, as well as all the VMS file references in the vmx file

  • Download VMDK files from the browser to the Web-based data store

    Hello

    I want to download the virtual computer VMDK file using the browser of the Web-based data store. I know how to do, but there is something I don't understand.

    I have configured my VM with a provisioning. From the VI client, I see that the size of the vm.vmdk is 4 GB.  The size of proviosned is 20 GB.

    Technically speaking, if I download the VMDK file, it should be 4 GB, however, from the browser on the vm - flat hard size Web-based data store is 20 GB... What is the standard behavior? Is there a way to download only the actually used 4 GB?

    Hello.

    This is the expected behavior, and as much as I know there is no work around if you use the browser to store data.

    Good luck!

  • Deleting files from the store of data using vSphere SDK

    Hello

    I'm doing a backup script that is supposed to clone a machine once every day.

    The steps that I'm trying to achieve is to first delete the old copy of my clone (this because vCenter won't replace the files). So I want to clone again and he unsubscribe vcenter because we do not want it displayed in our inventory.

    I got in regards to cloning and unsubscribing, but deleting files seems to be a bit more complicated.

    I tried a few approaches, I tried to vmdkManagement.pl that is not quite what I wanted (also tried change it without the desired result).

    I tried to figure out how to write my own script to delete, but the API is out of my reach as to understand how the neccessery objects correctly.

    Can someone help me with an excerpt from script (between Util::connect and Util::disconnect) or another approach to this issue?

    I must mention the data store is a NFS share and VMware seems to lock the files that prevents me to run a scheduled task to delete or using methods of perl (rmtree or untie) to delete files.

    Best regards

    Fredrik Eriksson

    1. you must use 'in the filename parameter.

    2 If you use vcenter you datacenter parameter specified in the function DeleteDatastoreFile

    #!/usr/bin/perl -w
    use strict;
    use warnings;
    use VMware::VILib;
    use VMware::VIRuntime;

    my %opts = (
       filename => {
          type => "=s",
          help => "filename to delete",
          required => 0
       }
    );

    Opts::add_options(%opts);
    Opts::parse();
    Opts::validate();
    Util::connect();

    my $filename = Opts::get_option('filename');

    my $fm = Vim::get_view(mo_ref => Vim::get_service_content()->fileManager);
    my $datacenter = Vim::find_entity_view(view_type => 'Datacenter');

    eval {
       $fm->DeleteDatastoreFile(name => $filename, datacenter => $datacenter);
    };
    if($@) {
       print("An error occured\n".($@->fault_string));
    }
    Util::disconnect();

    Command line

    ./script --server vcenter --username admin --password password --filename "[storage] vm-folder/vmware-10.log"

  • Download a file of data store

    Hello

    is it possible to use the datastorebrowser to download/update a file from a data store?

    As there is a way in the vCenter to do this should be also done with the viperltoolkit.

    Any ideas?

    Bye, Chris

    Yes,

    Take a peek quick utility that allows for file reach your data warehouse - http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-50/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.vmware.vcli.ref.doc_50%2Fvifs.html

    With the release of vSphere 5, you can now do so via vCenter Server, where as before, you had to go directly to a host. Although alive sample has not been re-written in support of vCenter Server, but you can change the script to connect to vCenter Server.

  • Deletion of snapshots to recover from data store space

    ESXi 4.1

    I have an ESXi host Miss space on one of its data warehouses. No 911 short, but short enough so that something needs to be done in a few weeks. On this data store, we created snapshots of some servers Exchange 2010 hosted before installing a custom Microsoft patch. So we have a server HUB, CASES and MB each with a single shot of several months that we will never have to come back. In this navigation data store, some of these 00001.vmdk files are huge, almost up to the size of the player it is a snapshot of. I believe it happened when we had backup problems and drive full of balls of trans.

    In any case, I want to remove these snapshots in snapshot Manager on each of those virtual machines by selecting the snapshot and hit delete. The problem is I've read different information about what will happen. Some of the information I've read says even this will take even MORE space. I don't know how that's possible, but I wanted to get in the forums before doing anything.

    Delete the snapshots will delete all files in capture instant hard, recovering a ton of space on the data store?

    TIA!

    The OMI 30 GB should be enough. When you delete the snapshot with the virtual machine, a snapshot of assistance is created, which will consume disk space necessary for any change, even if the current snapshot is being deleted more ~ 4GB for the snapshot file (.vmsn).

    With the virtual machine off, you will not need any addiitonal disk sapce. However, you won't be able to turn on the virtual machine again, until it's finished!

  • Cannot add new vmdk to vm from data store space free

    Hello

    what I am doing wrong?

    When trying to add new vmdk of VM (SQL) of free space to store data, I get an error. See attach...

    I tried 19GB, 18 GB, and even 10GB... the same error. As you can see there is 19.46 GB of free space on the data store.

    Thank you.

    chances are you have snapshots or Exchange memory files using this space.

    Best practices of VMware is to leave 25 + % free on your VMFS volumes.

    I weoud suggest you use another if possible VMFS volume

  • Deletion of the data store

    Hello

    I deleted a data on a cluster through a host store. The data store is not longer available on all hosts, but it still appears on home / inventory / data warehouses.

    The hosts are in 4.1.0 (build 260 247), the vCenter is 4.1.0 Build 258 902.

    The data store has been 200 GB and used on 10 hosts, all with the same version.

    The "Delete" option is not available on the data (by clicking right on) store, the data store is no longer visible on the hosts.
