Download a file of data store

Hello

is it possible to use the datastorebrowser to download/update a file from a data store?

As there is a way in the vCenter to do this should be also done with the viperltoolkit.

Any ideas?

Bye, Chris

Yes,

Take a peek quick utility that allows for file reach your data warehouse - http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-50/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.vmware.vcli.ref.doc_50%2Fvifs.html

With the release of vSphere 5, you can now do so via vCenter Server, where as before, you had to go directly to a host. Although alive sample has not been re-written in support of vCenter Server, but you can change the script to connect to vCenter Server.

  • Flat VMDK files after trying to delete files from data store

I tried to delete a VMDK file in a data store, because I thought that it was not in use, and I need space. I couldn't get the VM you are looking for the name of the VMDK file, so I thought that the VM has disappeared. Turns out that someone had renamed the virtual machine, when it was actually being used, so I could not remove the VMDK file.

I searched for the files with Powershell in a data store, and that's how I found this mysterious file in the first place.

After giving me the error that it couldn't be deleted, the file does not appear in the search more and the name of the file has been replaced by *-dish. VMDK, I think, and the column by specifying the Type just said file, instead of virtual disk. In addition, files not included in the research more.

Today, a day after, everything is back to normal. Everyone knows this behavior before and could tell me what happened?

Each virtual disk is actually 2 files: VMname.vmdk and VMname - flat hard

Unfortunately, the data store browser displays only the VMname... VMDK, but it gives the properties of VMname - flat hard. Use PuTTY, connect to the ESXi host via ssh, navigate to the folder of the virtual machine and use: the - lahtr to list the contents of an authoritarian way. You can also run: - ch to check actual use.

That get rid of the files?

  • Deleted virtual disk file and data store, just want to boot OS now.

So I had a VM win7, and I added a virtual disk on a new data store.

The new drive came out fine on windows as a new drive, and I was able to format etc.

Now I basically unplugged all the system and booted Linux instead of ESX and ran all over the disk on which was my data store.

Then I started in vmware and saw that the Windows VM was in a State of 'suspended' and if I try to take it back, he complains the missing disk file.

    "

Reason: The system cannot find the specified file.
Cannot open disk ' / vmfs/volumes/504e6c8a-b20d8bfd-1768-001e674dda97/win7/win7_1.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on.
VMware ESX can not find the virtual disk "/ vmfs/volumes/504e6c8a-b20d8bfd-1768-001e674dda97/win7/win7_1.vmdk". Check that the path is valid and try again.

    "

But it does not successfully. I tried to change the settings to remove the ' disk hard 2 "of its devices, but which is disabled since I assume that the virtual machine is suspended."»

I don't like on the virtual disk or any data on this subject, I have need to be in windows - I want to just start in

Is it possible to get out of this State without having to remove the entire virtual machine and re - install windows?

  • Support of file server data store Provisioning

    I build a Win2012R2 file server.

    Datastore1 = 800 GB

    Datastore2 = 12 to

Datastore1 is taken. Datastore2 will have about 2 TB of space used for storage of copies of virtual machines. The rest is for file server.

What provision is recommended to use for a growing file server? Thick or thin?

Is it OK to grant MORE than Datastore2 space?

If other data on Datastore2 (other than the file server) begin to develop how the file server will make up the difference?

    Thanks in advance.

Unless any 3rd third-party tool can do it, you must re - initialize the disk system. In addition to this, you will need to edit the virtual machine boot options and change the firmware of the BIOS to EFI boot. Another option is to shrink the partition from the current system of the customer for example 100 GB and then create a second partition with a GPT partition table.

Please keep in mind that backup and - most importantly - recover from these large partitions consume considerable time, and it may be useful to plan several smaller if possible partitions.

  • ESX 3.5, browse window of data store is empty, no file listed hard but hard in directory.

    Hello community VMware.

Re: ESX 3.5 host - you guys have seen this before.

I'm trying to finish what I thought was the simple task of creating a new Virtual Machine to Windows 7 from a file on a host ESX 3.5 hard. I used to copy the following files in 2 data store VEEAM Backup and FastSCP 3.0.3.

But when I do a right click-> 'New Virtual Machine' host-> (go through all the normal options-> under disk I select "use an existing virtual disk-->)

-> Click on Browse-> go to the location of the files below (Data Store 2)-> the right directory (100% in some countries).

The window is empty, no hard to select.

vmdk file doesn't show - what am i doing wrong.JPG

The files work well in VMware workstation.

I'm clearly missing something big here.

    Any tips?

    see you soon

    Keir

    Hello

I'm not entirely sure of your specific version of ESX 3.5 and WS7 mixture. But the VMDK from the two products may be incompatible.

Please try to use the VMware Converter to convert a VM ESX out of your VM Workstation.

You can get Converter for free here: http://www.vmware.com/products/converter/

  • Moving the data store files

    Hello

    It's on 11.2.2.4.1

If I move my data store files (ds0, ds1, etc.) to a new location, is there a way to get TimesTen use from the new location?

I tried moving them and update the sys.odbc.ini but get * 10003: unexpected database file exist for new data store * which I suppose is because the TT daemon keeps a record of location of data of the DSN file, as seen in ttStatus.

I have to go through a route of backup/restore (http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E18283_01/timesten.112/e13063/upgrade.htm) to move data files a data store?

    Thank you.

Yes, if you want to re - locate the control point files or transaction logs you must proceed as follows:

1 stop all activities demand etc. on the data store.

    2. make a full backup using ttBackup.

    3. remove the data of the memory store.

    4. destroy the datastore usign ttDestroy.

    5. change the Datastore or LogDir attributes in sys.odbc.ini to point to the new locations.

    6. restore the backup data store using ttRestore

    7. you can now start and use the data store.

It is the change of safely / supported only the location of the files in the data store.

  • < Unspecified file name > file is larger than the maximum size supported by the data store ' < indeterminate datastore >

    Hello

I use vSphere4 and I'm having problems, create snapshots of virtual machines.  I get the following error when I try and take a snapshot...

    File & lt; filename not specified & gt; is larger that the maximum size supported by the store data "& lt; not stated the store data & gt;

If I check all disks assigned to the virtual machine, the block sizes are ok.  All the disks are of block size of 1 MB and less 60GB, except one that is 600GB and a 4 MB block size.  There are also free space on each data store with being less 5,30 Go which I guess should be much more than enough to create a snapshot.

In addition, whenever I try and create a snapshot, it creates a file called SERVER - Snapshot1.vmsn, 2, 3, 4 etc. on the main data store.

Is it possible that because of the single disc of 600 GB, VMware prevents me from taking a snapshot?

    Here is the config...

See the attached file for disk configuration information.  Operating system drive is the drive where the snapshots are created.

Basic disks refers to all disks assigned to the virtual machine. Given that, by default, the snapshot is stored the vmx file, this data store should be able to potentially create a VMDK your largest disk size, assuming that you change every block in the vmdk.

In your case, it should support a snapshot that can potentially reach 600 GB to one of your drives, and so needs a block of size on the VMFS volume to support this. You can redirect the snapshots to another logic unit number and so to work around this problem (Storage VMotion is another option) limitation.

Trust, this clears up a little.

  • List of the files in the data store for the virtual machine

    Hello

How to list the files of data store for the virtual machine? I can't find reference to the command.

    Thank you

If you have installed vCLI and vSphere SDK for Perl, you have extra utilities on top of what is there with the vCLI, take a look at this list: http://www.vmware.com/support/developer/viperltoolkit/viperl40/doc/vsperl_util_index.html

  • Rename data store files

So, I built a virtual machine and decided the name had to be changed, however the files/ECE data store do not reflect these changes. Sure I like to keep things nice and organized, so my question is how to rename the files in the data store to match the name of the virtual machine without breaking?

    Hello

When I need to rename a server and it's data files I do this:

    1. vm stop

    2. Rename in VC

    3. cold migrate to another LUN/storage (take time for a large server som)

    4. turn power on. ... Fact

By doing this, everything is renamed (.vmx, .vmfs, records) and the risc of something wrong is very little.

  • Display of the VM in the incorrect data store

    Hello

I have 4 data warehouses and I've migrated a few VM data (DS) to another store, but when I discovered the 'data warehouses' in client VI still the virtual machine appears in the list on the old data store.

I have traveled the old DS and I can confirm no there are the virtual machine and the .vmx file points to the new location in the settings of the virtual machine, so why the virtual machine appears in the list of the old (source) DS?

Do you have something (for example ISO) attached to the virtual machine that may still reside on the old data store?

Review the vmx file (downloadable from the browser data store) and check that there is no reference to the old data store.

  • Troubleshooting a NFS data store

A vSphere 5.5 uses a database hosted by a NAS server and store accessible via NFS.

    It has always worked well.

Now I see that some folders and files on the data store is not accessible, with messages like:

    Move the virtual machine

    < vm_name >

    Was able to complete the network file copy / /vmfs/volumes/e4e525a8-acdae200 / < vm_name > / < vm_name > hard

Copy of the files of virtual machines

    or:

    Copy the file

    Data store < datastore_name >

    Unable to access file [Datastore < datastore_name >] < folder_name > / < Filename > .iso

I rebooted the NAS, the hosting data store and forced a file check, but I don't see any change.

Other files on the NAS even are accessible via CIFS and can be read and written without any problems.

How to detect my NFS datastore issues and, if possible, to solve?

Can what tools I use to check and recover the NFS datastore?

is it possible that something has changed in the NFS export? What solution do you use for storage? You can browse the files/folders you want to access from the storage itself?

  • Unable to download the file to the data store

    Hello

Can someone help me on this, I'm trying to download a file to the local data store on the esxi host, but its failure

    used as below

    $ds = get-data center 'test ' | Get-file "CISCO UCS B200 M3 | Get-VMHost | Get-Datastore "datastore."

    $destination = "\".

    $source = "D:\All Cisco\ENICandFNIC readers for UCSver2.2.C\updated drivers" - this folder

    New-PSDrive-location $ds - name VimDatastore - PSProvider ds-root $destination

    Set-Location ds:------.

    Copy-DatastoreItem-point $source - Destination $destination

What error messages you get? When I run your script, only an empty folder is performed on the data store. When you add "-recurse" it also copies child items (files and directories)

    $ds = Get-Datacenter "test" |Get-Folder "CISCO UCS B200 M3"|Get-VMHost |Get-Datastore "datastore*"

    $destination = "\"

    $source = 'D:\Test ' # -- this folder

    Set-Location ds:\ New-PSDrive -Location $ds -Name ds -PSProvider VimDatastore -Root $destination

    Copy-DatastoreItem -Item $source -Destination $destination -Recurse

But it's only 1 data store, if I understand your example, you are trying to copy to different data stores. This could easily be done like this:

    $DS = Get-Datacenter "test" |Get-Folder "CISCO UCS B200 M3"|Get-VMHost |Get-Datastore "datastore*" | select name,DatastoreBrowserPath

    $source = 'D:\Test ' # -- this folder

     foreach ($datastore in $ds){

    Copy-DatastoreItem -Item $source -Destination $datastore.DatastoreBrowserPath -Recurse

    }
