  Borrow a monitor from another computer and connect this monitor borrowed from yours, put your monitor on the computer that you have borrowed from the monitor.  That should tell you where the problem is quite quickly.  I bet that your monitor is dying and needs to be replaced, this test which will confirm.

I thought it was something with norton because my current version of this idle background scans if left alone for 20 minutes. But I turned off the power, and she always does. So I have disabled all programs, waited 20 minutes to touch the computer, tried to open MSN Messenger, and it did not work. This problem sometimes if I close the lid of my laptop and put it to sleep then open and then upwards, nothing works, or the screen is black with just the mouse cursor.

  Some updates apply to files or services that Windows uses. These types of updates can't be installed while Windows is running so you should save your work, close all open programs, and then restart your computer to complete the update process.

  Could you try disabling graphics hardware acceleration to Firefox? Due to recent graphics drivers, more people have problems with this feature.
