  If the laptop is one of the well known brands, he may well have a restore partition.  If you do not have a manual to the user of this computer, then go to the manufacturers website and look for the documentation.  At the very least, you should be able to find information about how to restore the laptop from the recovery partition.

  If you use your drive and it came with the computer, it is automatically activated when you reinstall. If the disc is not a detail, it will not activate and in this case, you will need to use either the recovery Partition - if your computer comes with one - or contact your computer manufacturer's technical support and ask them to send you a full set of Recovery DVD.   You can't say the product key.  If you use an Installation of Vista genuine disc it will install its own version to know the product key when you are prompted to enter (all versions of the same size of the bit are included on the authentic disc).
