The age old Question of Partition...

I got my Dell XPS 8700 for about two weeks, just long enough to get me into a bit of trouble.

It came with a 2 TB hard drive, and of course, the space was almost all in one huge partition where Windows 7 Pro is installed.  I managed to shrink this partition to 200 GB (still 70% unused).  I also have a "Shared Data" of 10 GB volume.

Disk management are the following:

No 39MB (healthy, Partition OEM)

24,67 GB NTFS RECOVERY (in good health, the Partition Active, primary system)

OS 195,32 Go (healthy, boot, page file, Crash Dump, primary Partition)

SHARED DATA 10,00 GB (healthy and logical Partition)

Go 1632,99 without label unallocated

=====

I thought primary topic vs logical at all when I created SHARED DATA, but obviously was Windows Disk Manager. I tried to create a partition in the unallocated space and told me that I already had four primaries.

So now, I have four primary partitions allocated and wants more logical partitions.  The Extended Partition that contains my logic is full.  Can I resize simply upward to gain space to create more logical partitions, or the logic will increase when I resize?  Does anyone have a step to a procedure of time that I can use?

Thank you
Colin

Windows 7 Pro, FF 27.0.1, Adobe and Flash modules (and it's auxiliary)... just the basics. My box is a server as well as used for most ordinary tasks... mail, browsers, editors of documents, etc., is always 'on' and never 'idle '. It's the Add-ons that make these things why don't do anything on my box.

It is, I know, is an old question, but outstanding, in my opinion. I revive this post:
    https://support.Mozilla.org/en-us/questions/799503?FPA=1

First of all, let me say that I consider that the best time of the Firefox browser. I love the essential philosophy of Mozilla and Firefox customization by the user and the control, while respecting their need to ensure security and stability.

OK, the issue is evident in the title, how can I limit history with Firefox? More recently, I observed when the activation and the deactivation of JavaScript in the preferences options has been removed. I have read the reasons of Bugzilla and Firefox and it was not difficult for me to open a topic: config tab next to a label containing a page I was working so I could see how the page without JavaScript. Once you know how, it was only a little more difficult that using the preferences options... which doesn't bother me really.

The history limit is implicit in the browser itself, where, if you open the history window, you can see your history and (for me) see an option 'longer than six months' who, if you mouse over and right click will get an option 'remove '. I think that everyone who tries this blocking their browser and if something is deleted when you finally get to the top, it will be your cache.

I know that the amount of history is set: config in the "places.history.expiration.transient_current_max_pages" as an integer parameter. Read many articles here in 'support' and personal judgment, I find that although the number can be increased, it cannot be decreased. If we do, it is up to the old definition as soon as Firefox is reopened.

I read the blog referenced in the first link above: http://blog.bonardo.net/2010/01/20/places-got-async-expiration and it even seems outdated, containing references to places.history.expiration.max_pages, which is not the file in topic: config in 27.0.1

In https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=643254 , I read the debate on these changes where Marco Bonardo held firmly at his post while I find the comment of al_9x, discuss the issue with him. "You have removed features that people use and love, that been in Fx since its inception. It is you who need to justify deletion. "And your justification of" nobody really wants expire history "is a lie, people do and I explained why", to represent my feelings completely. I have no need or desire for the history of more than 3 months. It is tyrannical to limit the ability of Firefox users to limit their history. And no.... I have not create yet another account of Mozilla and 'vote '.

There must be a way I and other users can limit (or increase) their history. So I ask "how?" This is, by design, to do this then I find a very disturbing trend, away from the philosophy of the user control and customization.

If I'm missing something, please let know me. Please * don't * send me a bunch of standard items 'aid', because I read all. That is my question.

    Kind regards

  • Upgrade with the SSD, the recovery on the old HARD drive partition

Hi, I would like to upgrade my W530 with SSD. What should I do to have work Pre-boot recovery with recovery partition the disk of HARD now at this time while the system would be the new SSD? Is this possible? BTW, I am considering between mSATA and SSD 2.5 "for windows. Which should I choose? I have to admit mSATA is more convenient for me.

    Thanks in advance!

    > recovery partition? I don't want to move on SSD

You can skip it when you perform the cloning.

    > What about pre-seed recovery? It will work even if I copy the recovery on the SSD partition?

The presence of a recovery partition valid on the active drive (which is the new SSD, in your case) is required for recovery on-site work. So, if this feature is important to you, you should go back to the first question above.

If you have not made your purchase, you should take a close look at the M4 Crucial mSATA SSD 128 GB. Just a suggestion.

  • Question on Partition 'DATA' on the Satellite X 200 - 20 s

Hi, firstly it is great that toshiba has this forum directly from the page of the manufacturer. I wonder what is on the partition of DATA from my laptop. The 200 X 20 s comes with two 160 GB HARD drive. One is divided into two 73 GB. I would like to install linus on the DATA which is empty. What is the purpose of it?

I guess that the intent of the parititon of 'DATA' is to store data on it. Sound very logical in my opinion. Since you have a HDD recovery you should check first if this DATA partition is not the recovery of HARD drive partition. I think that the best thing to do before installing linux, create a recovery disk with the "Recovery Disc creator and then install your linux system.

On linux, I have an interesting link for you:

  • Move the system on another drive partition.

I have 4 hard drives on my Windows 7 system.  Readers 1 & 2 are defined in a RAID 1 configuration (labeled Disk 0 disk c).  Disc 3 (labeled Disk 1 drive F :) is were the 100 MB Partition reserved system resides.)  This drive has the SMART errors.  How can I move the system reserved on a healthy disk partition?

    Hello

Thanks for posting your question in the Microsoft community

After the description of the question, I understand that you want to move the different system for the drive partition. I'll be happy to help you on this question.

    1. What is the accurate and complete error message you get?
    2. What is the letter of the drive for this partition not formatted?

Let us try the following steps.

If the 100MB partition not formatted the disk '1' before the C: drive, follow the below mentioned steps.
    a. create a repair disk.
    Create a system repair disc:
    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-in/Windows7/create-a-system-repair-disc

    b. create a new simple partition.

    c. assign a drive letter (ex: 'Z').

    d. copy a folder and two files to the system partition reserved current (drive '0')

    Boot

    Bootmgr

    BOOTSECT. BAK

    e. remove the drive letter of the partition 'System Reserved' old ('0' drive)

    f. mark the new "System Reserved" boot partition as "Active".

    g. restart the computer and check if his boot to the desktop.

    h. If the computer does not start, then using the disk repair repair startup.

-J' I re installed windows due to a Partition problem earlier, and today I realized that I had these old files from a previous installation (same drive)
It is safe to delete these files? Thank you.
In addition, my HDD was reduced in size considerably, from more than 50%. (C:). It was 1 to when I got it, but after you have reinstalled Windows because of a problem, I am now made it is 451 GB.
    Thank you in advance.

    Hi Conner,

Thanks for keeping us posted and share this information with us.

As Palcouk suggested, you can remove the "Windows.old" folder if you have saved data on the computer.

It is not possible for the drive to shrink. I would like you to check the amount of space on the hard disk after you remove the Windows.old folder.

Let us know if you have other questions about Windows in the future. We will be happy to help you.

  • HP Pavilion Notebook g7: Re-create the recovery on D drive partition

I have a HP Pavilion g7, which originally had Windows 7.  I recently upgraded to Windows 10. However, the recovery partition (D has still the Windows 7)  Question: Can I just remove the Windows 7 file and re-create the partition recovery with Windows 10 or is it more involved.

    morris81

    Basically, the answer is no.

    Why?

Because installed HP recovery Partition contains a custom Windows OEM compressed HP image and the firmware on the same PC is written to be able to start in this partition (using F11) to this recovery.

Your own partition does NOT contain this file because there is no way to get at HP.

Even in this case, the F11 process wouldn't work, even if you haven't created your own partition.

However... If you want the means to do a full system recovery, then consider using a third-party product known as Macrium Reflect the image of the installation.

Macrium reflect (MR) provides a FREE version that can be used to image and restore partitions or drives together.

What I recommend is the following:
    (1) download and install Macrium reflect (MR)
    (2) run M. and choose the option: "Create an image of the partition (s) required to backup and restore Windows" to write a full backup to an external drive or USB key
    (3) use the option to create a CD or a USB startup key

My experience is that SIR, when you use the option of Compression high, typically allows to compress the image file recorded at about 50% of the space USED in the OS partition.  This means that if you have a 40GB and 80GB OS partition is used, MR must only about 20 GB to store the image file.

I use all the time and it usually takes less than 10 minutes to make the backup of the image and at the same time or less do a restore.

In addition, MR has the ability to add a recovery Boot Menu entry.  This then allows you to boot into Windows re, and then you can use it to do a restore - when you cannot start Windows!

NOW, you have the means to restore a full system that works for the external hard drive or USB key in a few minutes.

    Good luck

  • Question about partitions on Equium A100-027

    Hi all!

I'm new to the forum but have been hidden for a while and he thought at the time that I said "Hello".

This and the fact that I have a question about my laptop Satellite A100-027.
The hard drive on my laptop seems to be divided into three partitions = Vista (c) / data (E :) / WinRE (d) with the WinRE (D :) is quite small but others, quite large.))

My C drive is up to 3 that GB free with about 35 GB of free data (E :) is possible to merge these two to give me a big drive? And if so, how?
Please excuse my ignorance, but it seems impossible to me to "get my head around" this thing hard drive and would split the a large hard drive.

Any help would be greatly appreciated and once again, Hello to all.

    Hello

As the user previous already said, you can manage HARD drive partitions in disk management settings.

If you n t want to have a data partition (e) then you can try to delete it in disk management.
Then you can add this empty space of the HARD drive for other partitions on the HARD drive.

But note; the empty space will be placed at the end of the HARD drive. I don't know if your C partition is placed as a second HARD drive partition, but if so, then it should be no problem to add empty space to partition C (System) of m.

  • Is it safe to restore the Windows.old folder?

    BACKGROUND:

I have a Dell Studio 540 in Windows Vista Ultimate which suddenly crashed, then wouldn't restart, saying: "no available boot device." Apparently, the hard drive boot sector had been corrupted. After of the painstaking efforts to save as many as possible training and have unsuccessfully using CHKDSK or Seagate tools to repair the drive, I finally resorted to a clean reinstall using the Dell OEM Windows Vista reinstallation disc. I chose the option to move all old files/folders in a folder Windows.old and I am now able to start Windows. However, all settings prerequisites, programs, files and folders from the previous installation are still in the Windows.old folder. For now, I run a full CHKDSK again (and he says 'Corrupt file attribute Deleting the file record segment X X' so I hope that some repairs happens)...
But what I would do, if possible and if it will not cause problems, use the instructions in this MS support article "how to restore a computer to a previous Windows installation after you install Windows Vista." But before I do that, my question is the following:
    QUESTION:
If I had to do a reinstall of Vista due to damage/corruption of the hard drive, and if all what information has been moved to the folder Windows.old during this process, is it possible that restore the folder Windows.old to the previous installation would restore any damage/corruption existed, thus causing the problem to return or make things worse? Or should I not worry about the restoration of the old "problem"?

    Hello

You can use the restore feature if the previous installation was good.

It is not in your case; If this isn't an option for you.

You can use the windows.old folder to retrieve your data.

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/932912

But the programs must be reinstalled form the original media.

And when you're done with the windows.olf folder you can delete.

"How to use the disk cleanup feature to delete the Windows.old folder after you install Windows Vista"

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/930527

And it is perhaps an idea to run Dell Diagnostics and eventually replace your drive hard if it comes up with errors.

    See you soon.

    Hello
    1. do you reinstall the operating system?
    2. If so, was your previous Windows XP operating system?
Windows.Old is created when the operating system is reinstalled. It may contain important data of the installation previous this is why it is advisable to back up the data before you delete the Windows.old folder.

Simple is to delete the Windows.old folder using disk cleanup.

  • Cannot reinstall Windows Vista because the Windows.old file is corrupted.

I hope someone can help! I'm about to pull out my hair! :)

I have a laptop Dell Inspiron 1720, under Windows Vista Home Premium, with 3 GB of ram. SP2

I had problems with error messages

Here are some of the messages I was getting.

    "Dell Quickset has stopped working"

"Windows Management Instrumentation has stopped working"

"The user profile service has stopped working".

    "Windows Update has stopped working"

There were a couple more but I do not remember. They are all gave me the ability to check online for a solution I have chosen and the message would go for a while, but not forever.

I'm tired of dealing with him, so I used my Dell disk to reinstall Vista. I did not choose the repair option first. I chose to do a clean install. When I got to the last step where it says "Complete the Installation", it gave me an error message telling me that the "Windows.old" file is corrupted. I do not have wright the rest of the information down, but he told me to run the check disk utility. (I think it has been shown as chkdsk). I clicked 'OK' and the screen went black and stayed like that for an hour. I turned off the computer and repeat all the steps but always goes to the black screen and stops. I tried to use the fix and it found a problem immediately and that fixed it, but after reboot, same thing. Yesterday I ran again the repair option, and it still works today. All night and nothing. She is still ongoing as I type this message. My question is how to run disk utility to check without an operating system installed? Use the "Diagnostic" option when I boot the disk from Dell? Any ideas on how I can get reinstalled Vista?

Boot from the Dell cd and run diagnostics
