  You're right, the E420 is SATA2.

  SATA3 is very rare in the laptops!

  Hello. I was wondering if someone could tell me if the i7-2710QE would work in my e420. I've looked everywhere for an answer on that. I have the opportunity to buy one for only $65.00 and looking at the plug it would be a great upgrade to my i3-2410... Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated!

  (I list the two second issue came with the 'second wave' of Sandy Bridge CPUs)

  Although this 'free mini pci-e' resembeles Mini PCI-E physically it is port mSATA, something totally different, you can buy mSATA SSD for the port and use it as a boot partition.

• E420S fan running too long

  I have a question about my Thinkpad Edge E420S (4401-29U; BIOS version 1.36).

  The problem is: once the fan turns on, it stays on for an unnecessarily long time, even with low cpu load. (A similar problem is described here.)

  The system is idling around 45-50 ° C. Once it hits around 55-60 ° C or more, fan comes into action and quickly lowers temperature back to 45-50... and then the fan remains on for 20-30 minutes.

  My first guess is that it is a BIOS problem, because:

  * the problem seems to be not high temperatures, but rather the fan who does not turn off the power as soon as the set temperature is reached.

  * I was not able to control the fan through the operating system, Windows 7 (using programs such as tpfancontrol) or Debian Linux (using the thinkpad-acpi kernel module).

  However, many critics of the e420s mentions silent operation, so maybe I'm wrong...

  Am I right in thinking that sounds like a BIOS problem, or maybe a hardware problem? Anyone here know if it is a complaint often and if so, if there is a new BIOS update in the pipeline?

  You are already on the latest version of the BIOS and there is no direct definition for on BIOS CPU fan speed. But if you have installed Power Manager, then you can try "Cooling system policy" in the field "advance settings". If the problem persists, please contact local lenovo to test hardware.

  Hi people,

  I bought an e420s year last with a 320 GB 7200 RPM HARD drive and is now looking to experience (finally) SSD technology. I thought that I should replace my HDD with a SSD, but I'm hesitant to sacrifice storage space that offers from my HARD drive. In addition, I can't afford to buy a large SSD. So, I thought that a good compromise is to adapt to an SSD mSATA on which I can install my OS and frequently used apps, keep the HARD drive for storage.

  My question: the e420s does support SATA III mSATA SSD? I can't seem to find the answer anywhere and support refuses to answer that I passed my warranty.

  I have discussed your problem with teams and founded their explanation MSATA III will be able to support your machine. One of the gurus (joelle) uses the X 220 with the MSATA III and it works very well for him. Well, it should work for you too and as I understand it, the drives are backward compatible.

  Get ready for the arrival of my 'new' (for me) Lenovo E420, & found a 'customer' reviewer (a COMPUTER technician in his ' against') who said, "ATTENTION: battery needs to be recharged manually."

  New on Lenovo ("but not to ' puters - for my first home ' puter, in 88, I used a momboard of IBM), I never heard such a thing. (I.e., you plug your adapter & batt'y charges - work.)

  Could someone provide some information on the hows & what from whom? (IOW: HOW can we "reload a batt'y * manually *?") ([Unless the technology didn't know what he was talking about... that is, very doubtful].)

  * NOTE: Have seen several questions / "complaints" to others about batt'y probs (although no w / my own question or RE: the E420). I.e., am the hope is a simple and easy response & not a case of "buyers remorse" - so come on, "Lenovo diehards," make my day!

  I forgot to mention, you can use 2 external monitors (1 HDMI, 1 VGA port), you just can't use 3, which means that if your using 2 external monitors, you can not use your laptop screen. And now, for the rest of your question:

  -l'eSata is highly most watched. For external storage its actually much better than USB 3.0, because there is not a man of the Middle will convert sata to eSata card port, and most of the boxes will allow access speed of disk native sata hard. I use mine to connect to a lightscribe DVDram I installed in my server and an external hard drive. If you want USB 3.0, as mentioned in a previous reply, you can buy a card with USB 3.0 Express. They mount pretty flower and it will be just like having ports install factory (as far as I'm concerned).

  -Sound card: you have the sound software installed? It seems to help with the sound quality (even without paying any special parameters. Are you anywhere near Raleigh NC?  I was able to trim the number of process for you.  I have a pretty clean image backup of windows 7 (with the OEM key, then it would not matter much if you used it). Would just back up your keys for office and everything else. I am currently running windows 8, so I couldn't tell you how I am currently running process.  You can download and install CCleaner and disable some of your startup programs (can be done without CCleaner but it makes it easer.) You can also on the head to tweakhound.com and take a look at the windows 7 tweaking section. Enough good things, I choose tweaks based on what I want to use the computer for. http://www.TweakHound.com/Windows7/tweaking/index.html make sure you know what you're doing before messing with your OS well. Backup, backup, backup. I have (its free, ReDoBackup) imaging software that I image my hard drive with opportunity encase I screw something up.

• E420 - investigation to enrich the experience

  I recently bought an E420 and I decided to do a custom installation of Windows 7.

  Without thinking much, I decided to erase everything on my hard drive, including the recovery partition.

  At the present time, my custom installed Windows 7 seems extremely slow even with all the drivers.

  I was wondering if installed all drivers of ThinkVantage will not give the same performance as the original Lenovo Windows 7 with an enhanced experience.

  Are there ways for me to get a copy of Lenovo Windows 7 with an improved experience?

  You will get a reasonable experience by downloading everything using the system update and then by installing the RapidBoot package.

  You can get a copy of Windows 7 preloaded calling assistance and buying a set of recovery disks (I assume that you did not have the recovery discs).

• the glass is not flush with my e420s

  I just got a new e420s and it works well, but I noticed that glass on the kind of bumps to the top screen and I have to push it back into place. This would replace Lenovo? or fix this somehow? I got this phone 5 days ago.

  This is a manufacturing defect and should be covered by the standard warranty.

  I just bought a Pad of thinking E420 and I really like it. Exception: on the lower left row, the FN key is to the left of the control key.

  Is there a way I can remap the keyboard so that the control key work to the left of the FN key?

  (I know I chan change how work function keys - like shortcuts to the controls or F1 to F12 - that's why I was hoping there is a way to remap these two keys on the bottom left.)

  You can do this in the menu of the bios under keyboard option.
