The Group of port NFS configuration

I'm setting up NFS in a UCS environment where there are 2 x 10 physical rising Gb configured in a SHIFT.

Should I set up my group of virtual port of NFS on my DVS as active / active or active / standby?

Even by the other answer, always use Active/active when possible. This will give you the maximum available bandwidth.

There are some pitfalls with NFS, however, that you may know. NFS does not support native multipathing. So, if you want to make use of these two 10 GB uplinks, you must make sure that you have more than one pair of source/destination IP addresses between the ESXi host and storage Bay. You can do this by splitting the NFS volumes between two storage controllers. Or if all volumes are on one controller, you will need to assign a second IP address to the controller.

  • Get-VirtualPortGroup - trying to get only the groups of ports attached to a switch.

I've got the following as part of a script, that I'm working on.  I'm willing to all the port groups on the VMSwitch on all servers in the list.

    ForEach($objHost in $ObjAllHosts){
    $strVSwitch = Get-Virtualswitch -VMHost (Get-VMHost $objHost) | where-object { $_.Name -match "VMswitch" }
    $objPortGroups = Get-VirtualPortGroup -VMHost (Get-VMHost $objHost) -VirtualSwitch $strVSwitch | Sort-Object -Property Name
    }

The problem is that this does not seem to fill the $objPortGroups variable. Point of supply and investigating further, I saw that:

    Get-VirtualPortGroup -VMHost (Get-VMHost $objHost) -VirtualSwitch $strVSwitch

Gives me a list of all the port groups, on all switches.

    Get-VirtualPortGroup -VMHost (Get-VMHost $objHost) | Where-Object {$_.VirtualSwitch -match "VMSwitch"}

    Gives me nothing.

    Get-VirtualPortGroup -VMHost (Get-VMHost $objHost) | Where-Object {$_.VirtualSwitch -like "*"}

Gives me all ports on all switches groups, considering that:

    Get-VirtualPortGroup -VMHost (Get-VMHost $objHost) | Where-Object {$_.VirtualSwitch -like "VM*"}

    Gives me nothing.

Is there something special about the. VirtualSwitch property that prevents from functioning correctly?  Is there another way to get a list of the groups of virtual ports on 'VMSwitch' and not vSwitch0 and vMotion?

I think the name of the property in the VirtualPortGroupImpl object that you want is VirtualSwitchName not VirtualSwitch.

  • How to know which is the Group of ports is management traffic?

    Hello!

I tried many things to find a symbol to find out who is management traffic, unfortunately I did not find the symbol field.

So, can you help me find the symbol?

Your answer will be a great help for me.

    Thanks in advance!

The following script will give you the portgroup traffic management. Replace the IP address with the IP address or the name of your own ESX Server.

    $esxName = "192.168.0.107"
    $esx = Get-VMHost $esxName | Get-View
    $nicMgr = Get-View $esx.ConfigManager.VirtualNicManager
    $nicMgr.Info.NetConfig | `
      Where-Object {$_.NicType -eq "management"} | `
      Select-Object -ExpandProperty CandidateVnic | `
      Select-Object -Property Portgroup

  • Migration of the existing groups of port DVS vSwitch

    Hey guys,.

I am looking for a good article, but so far I don't have if existing port a groups with std vSwitch ESXi can I migrate to a newly created DVS.
I saw VMs, Assistant network management, but it seems that I have to create all the groups before port.

Is this really the case? as I have 70 groups of ports and I don't want to do the job manually.

    Any suggestion?

    Thanks in advance

    Evening,

This process can be script but yes destination port groups must be created first.   I suggest to use the Onyx project to get the commands in powershell to create groups of ports.  Personally, I have 700 groups of ports and I understand your pain.   Onyx will allow you the creation of a port group unique in powershell then all you need to change is the name and vlan id.   If you have the standard naming, you should be ok...

Let me know if you have any additional questions or I missed your question.

    Thank you

  • Catch 22 - Port Trunk Configurations: how to combine identifiers VLAN native with DHCP (but allows traffic of VM)

Catch 22 - Port Network Configurations: how to combine identifiers VLAN native with DHCP (but allow the virtual computer)

I came across a Catch 22.  Maybe someone can restore the directly here.  I found a "witch hunt" for sure.

It comes with the Ports of junction on the side of the switch of the ESX host network.

    Context:

Ok. The Setup is a HP Blade C7000 enclosure.  I try to configure ports for switching to the blades.  ESX 3.5 U4 will be installed the BL460cs.  Installation is preferred method: revive unattended.  No problem with the syntax of Kick-Start,

I am here, it's the side network.

    The problem:

I find a major complication in that the switch ports must be configured for both traffic Service Console and VMkernel, more Virtual Machine since only two NICs by blade. Not best practices, but we have only two switches Cisco 3020 inside.  The two uplink physical NIC is paired in the same vSwitch.  (No iSCSI does fortunately).

So the Catch 22 question is as follows:

If the id VLAN native set up on the switch port, DHCP works of course and the VMware boot loader is able to grasp a binary / packets on the network (FTP Site) and install OK.  But after no installation, no communication with SC unless I set the VLAN id of the SC to '0 '.  The value "4" 0 does not communication, but "40" is the VLAN native.

If id configuring VLAN native retired from the Switch port, DHCP will not work and host does not have IP address during the VMware boot process.  This is as expected as traffic without label is not assigned an eligible

    VLAN, so no comms.

The Port of the Switch configuration:

    interface GigabitEthernet0/16

    SERVERNAME description

    switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q

    switchport trunk vlan native 40

    switchport trunk allowed vlan 40-254

    switchport mode trunk

    switchport nonegotiate

    Speed 1000

    No cdp enable

    spanning tree portfast trunk

    end

    Summary

OK, let's summarize where things are and if possible please attach responses to their digital identity.

    (1) is there a way to delete the VLAN tagging altogether side ESX host? Not only the id '0 '. The problem is with clearly with the VLAN native defined as "40".  If "40" IDs specified on the Group of ports for the Service Console, no joy, no comms. If the id of '0' value, capable of ping gateway and communicate on the network.

    (2) what is the problem with the definition of VLAN native as "40" when the config for the switch port is set as VLAN native "40"?  Or if it was a problem?  Both parameters clearly do not work together.

    (3) a switch receiving a unmarked frame it will assign to the VLAN Trunk native. Ok. Trunking bases and why I need a VLAN specified on the port for DHCP native work.  But it seems that since the id VLAN is set manually even as VLAN native, closed communications and no traffic as possible.

    (4) executives made tag 802. 1 q VLAN native?  I think that it is not and this could well be the problem. Since the id VLAN "40" is not labeled, but try to score the side host vSwitch port group.

Please let me know your thoughts, community and how in general, we are approaching 2 NIC ESX configurations.

When trunking multiple VLANs, you either have a default VLAN is nothing is tagged, or you don't.  That's what the vlan native to you, it defines which VLAN would be used if no tag is visible on the packets traversing the network.  For servers, if you are marking, then everything has to tag, if you're not marking at the server level, then the port must be either an access port or a VLAN native or default must be set.  I also don't keep your service console the same network as your vm.  Keep this isolated for the security of the network.  If you isolate this VLAN, you can separate and use a single IP address for installation and one for post construction.

Or, you can provide an IP address during the build.

  • Rename groups of ports

    Hello

In vCenter via web client, I added a vswitch to some host. I have added a group of ports for the new vswitch so that I have two groups of ports on each vswitch who manage some physical cards and renamed the old port 'VM Network' groups while it appears on the web with a unique name client network tab that hostname in it.

I put the network card of virtual machines to the new port groups.

The old "VM Network" "VM Network1" and the "VM Network2" still appear in the web client, Network tab, they have even machines in the old network, although I changed to they renamed network. So the machine appears twice, in the new one the old network. I can't get rid of the old network. When I try to migrate virtual machines from the old to the new network, the list is empty.

    vmnw.gif

Also, when I try to clone a machine, I get a warning that the NIC of the virtual computer using a network ("the new network name") that are not accessible. It seems to me, the old network names are still in use. Is there a chance to fix this? I'm afraid to have performance problems.

The virtual machine have Active snapshots, where shots were created so that virtual machines were still attached to the groups old port? In this case, the ports 'ghost' groups should disappear after deleting snapshots.

  • How the Virtual Machine port group communication?

How the Virtual Machine port group communication?

Port group is virtual aggregation of ports on vSwitch. A vSwitch can have multiple Port groups which separate the different network traffic. Port groups communicate with vSwitch, and we have physical network maps on vSwitch which establish communication with the external network. We can configure security, NIC teaming, traffic shapping nework political and at the level of the port groups. Once the port group is created, we can assign to vNIC

    How to establish communication?

Public network > Switch L3 Core > ESXi physical adapter > vSwitch > groups > virtual NIC > Virtual Machine

Virtual machine connect to the physical map using vNIC coming on Port groups. This is how it works.

  • Consolidation and failover for the uplink on the Distributed switch port group

    Hello

I have a problem with the implementation of a distributed switch, and I don't know I'm missing something!

I have a few guests with 4 of each physical cards. On the host eash I configured 2 virtual switches (say A and B), with 2 physical network by vSwitch using etherchannel adapter. Everything works fine for etherchannel and route based on the hash of the IP for the latter.

Recently, I decided to create two distributed switches and move the respective physical ports of virtual switches to this distributed switches. Once again, I want to configure etherchannel and route based on the hash of the IP. But when I open the settings for the uplink port group, aggregation and failover policies are grayed out and cannot be changed. Apparently they inherit configuration also but I don't know where!

    Chantal says:

You must set the card NIC teaming policy on trade in reality and not on the uplink group more expected.

  • Increase the number of ports on the port vDS group

    Hi all

I know that I can increase or decrease the number of ports in a port group easily using the vSphere Standard switch. I can't find how to do this on my Nexus 1000v vDS however. Each group of port that I configured on the vDS has only 32 ports available and it becomes a problem.

If anyone knows how to increase ports and/or where the documentation is for this, let me know. Thank you!!

    Matt,

On the VSM in the port-profile game 'max-ports' to the number you want.

  • Several groups of ports with the same VLanID

Ask a question on peoples experience or knowledge, because we had a little chat here at work. If you have several groups with the same VLanID virtual port in the same cluster, does or that will cause a problem?

Tom - we do that regularly.

We have large quantities of VLAN - and often will be have 2 VMs hosted on the same Vlan environments for the purposes of the Dev - but when we move to production, we want to be able to isolate the dependent VMs to the configured network - with the same Vlan in use. . with a name different from the ways that we can quickly determine which is which.

    In addition

I have hhave 1 vSwitch, with 2 natachasery (set up for tolerance of failure... not load balancing). . 2 groups of ports. . even vLan. . but I can get then Port Group1 to Teddy defauilt 1 and Port Group2, or Teddy bear 2 - which means I can isolate traffic e.. except in an emergency.

  • Two groups of ports with same VLAN on the same Vswitch?

I'm doing a consolidation.  We had two different people put up two closed different of Vsphere and different network labels were used.   Of course the network labels must exactly match vmotion without losing connectivity.    So I was hoping that I could just create groups in double port on my vswitch for VLAN do not match them.  I know I could just migrate them and move quickly from the network label, but some of them are essential and may not fall.

For example, on a cluster, I might have a port for Vlan ID 88 group that says 'Web DMZ'.  But the other cluster has "WWW" VLan ID 88.    Can I just create a second group of ports on the first group which also used Vlan ID 88 with the name 'WWW' and I started?    Which will cause problems with switching (loops, etc.)?

Hope it makes sense.  Guess the short answer is can I I have two groups of different ports on a vswitch using the same VLAN ID tag without causing problems?

Creation of several groups of ports with the same VLAN ID should not cause any problem. This is only marking/close the traffic to and from the virtual machine, is nothing like that of loops,... to be afraid of.

  • Group of port and the naming convention for vLAN

What is the naming convention better for groups of ports on vSwitches?  This naming convention should match how we name them VLAN on the physical switches and how important is that?

    Hi VMinator,

To answer your question, he has not agreed to 'standard' for names of portgroup.  That's all what you're comfortable with the support and what works for you and your organization.  A bit like server names; Some companies are going hardcore with the naming conventions and others their name after the characters in science fiction or world of warcraft bosses

Forensic science more you pack in a naming of the control standard more you have (i.e. for scripts, health check, etc. see below).  Also, if the name itself answers questions on his own and allows you to save a phone call that is priceless.  For example - the guys says unix... "Uh which network to choose for my new virtual machine.  My IP is blah blah blah. "Well, with right portgroup name, this question would have answered itself... and maybe even recorded some interruptions of service in other cases by the simple fact of being clear and effective in the communication of how this virtual device should work: purely expressed through an appropriate naming convention.

Here's another one.  My last concert, we had thousands of virtual machines that had to move data centers and when they landed, they needed to change the IPs and start using 3 vNIC (instead of 1) on each virtual machine.  Each vNIC with a different subnet mask.  All support should be conducted by a team of outsourced with minimum experience of VMware.  The only way to support something like this and be effective is PowerCLI.  With just invited the naming convention only, you can perform various tasks such as query the virtual computer and check its settings of portgroup compared to its actual IP information in the operating system, initiate a ping from .NET to the virtual machine, if there is any questions Act automatically.  Some actions that will have to be performed include, for example, change the portgroup or mask on a set of clients;  Or questioning guests and glean information network (CDP, vSwitch, portgroup of information etc.) and compare observed network vs network expected enumerated in the PG naming convention. etc etc.  The list of actions that you can take are limited only by your creativity.  The naming standards give you effective power both in manual and automatic efforts.

Still, notice of one man, but every site I care and feeding generally ends with a PG standard similar to what I first described above in my previous post.  Don't forget my example naming convention is Basic.  There are many other attributes that you can add (i.e. in vCloud deployments, in addition to the info network, you can choose to identify various features specific to vCloud org-networks, etc.).

TBH just most of the companies have appointed VM-network exchanges (ok not bad) or some random shortname which doesn't help troubleshooting.  They are fairly easy to fix and also change over time, if necessary.  You can easily drag and drop a set of virtual machines (although I don't personally do this way) in the new port group (via the page of networking to CTRL + SHIFT + N) or PowerCLI it (Yes!  way to go).  Of course, always the ping tests before and after the change.  There are a lot of scripts out there (or ask master lucd post in PowerCLI VMTN forums).  If this is net-news, then you are ahead of the game and will have a standard to follow, whatever it is.

Best of luck and have fun!

  • The Port of the switch to ESX host configuration

I have a switch that connects to a physical server used in

virtualization.  This means that virtual machines with IP addresses on

several subnets will send layer 2 frames to this switch.

However, in an attempt to reduce the number of network adapters on the server

It is.   If there is only one card NETWORK in this physics

Server connected to a physical switch port - it is possible to

with a port on the handful of physical switch frames that come

all virtual machines running on the physical server - when these VMs have IPs

different subnets?  Or each separate subnet property intellectual logic requires a

switch port separated to manage its images and its own on physical NETWORK card

    the server used for virtualization?

    Thanks for your comments

Yes, you need to configure the physical switch port as a trunk and then configure the VLAN tagging on your Exchange Configuration-> Networking.

  • EA6500 only shows no device connected to the switch of working group 5 ports

I just replaced a defective Linksys e4200 with an ea6500.  After assistance by phone, I got to the top and work, but only one computer on my LAN is not displayed.

I connected an 8 port 10/100 switch Linksys my 4200, and my wife's computer was connected to that.   The computer displays the IP as 192.168.1.133 and it is connected to the internet with my router again.  But the ea6500 does not show a device with the ip address.  Instead, he shows what he calls a network with the IP 192.168.1.130 device.

How can I see the devices connected to the switch 5 ports and determine which ip addresses, they have been assigned?

I use a switch with my network with a router EA and it shows the devices correctly. Turn off the computer which does not appear in the list of devices and check to see if any device will appear as offline adter who. Remove from the list of devices, and then restart the router. Once the router is ready, open the page of the router again and turn on the computer and check if it will be detected correctly. I hope this helps.

Edit: Check and make sure you have the latest firmware loaded. Otherwise, update the firmware and do a reset after the update of the firmware. Check your list of devices after that.
