The Port of the switch to ESX host configuration

I have a switch that connects to a physical server used in

virtualization.  This means that virtual machines with IP addresses on

several subnets will send layer 2 frames to this switch.

However, in an attempt to reduce the number of network adapters on the server

It is.   If there is only one card NETWORK in this physics

Server connected to a physical switch port - it is possible to

with a port on the handful of physical switch frames that come

all virtual machines running on the physical server - when these VMs have IPs

different subnets?  Or each separate subnet property intellectual logic requires a

switch port separated to manage its images and its own on physical NETWORK card

the server used for virtualization?

Thanks for your comments

Yes, you need to configure the physical switch port as a trunk and then configure the VLAN tagging on your Exchange Configuration-> Networking.

If you have found this helpful at all prices please points using the correct or useful!  Thank you!

  • Advice on how best to configure the network adapters and virtual switch in ESX host

I'm new to VMware and am its implementation.  I got my training a few weeks ago, and now I'm configing my hosts.  I have 3 guests, each have 2 network cards.  There is a virtual switch that ESX creates when it is installed (vSwtich0).  The books said that it is advisable to delete the VM network port of virtual machine that is assigned to the value group default virtual switch and put it on another virtual switch so that you keep your management network separated from the network of the vm for performance and security.  If I do this, all my virtual machines will have to go to 1 NIC b/c I only have 2 NICs per host.  I thought that I have just to keep all my groups of ports on the default vSwitch0 and add my second NETWORK adapter so that I can take advantage of the Association of NICs for redundancy and load balancing.  However, I'm not sure on the performance and the security risks.  Do you have any ideas or advice?  I could also create two virtual switches and put my virtual machines on one which would have a NETWORK card dedicated and put my service and Kernal VM console on another virtual switch with a dedicated network card.  However, in this scenario, I have no fault tolerance or load balancing.  We are a small shop and we have about 10-15 VMs on each host.  I don't have access to b/c distributed switching we paid only for the company (not more).  Thank you.

Hi and welcome to the forums,

With 10-15 VMs per box and I guess that I would seriously consider adding two extra cards for each host in the production machines. You could then do something like:

    vSwitch0 - vmnic0, vmnic2, vmnic3 - Console of Service, VM LAN network

    vSwitch1 - vmnic1 - VMkernel

That would give you redundancy and performance to access your hosts (SC) and also for all your virtual machines. The VMkernel would get a NETWORK card dedicated for vMotion and could be on a separate network. He didn't need redundancy really as if the NIC sank the only issue is that you cannot vmotion virtual machines. In this case you would just move one of the NIC workgroup through to those switches manually.

If you only have 2 network cards, then I would say having a vSwitch with two attached network adapters and VLAN the VMkernel may be off. I want absolutely to the redundancy of having two cards together.

    Hope this helps,

  • Set the time of ESX host

    Hello

before that I have to download free 5.6 OPs of the trial, I used OPs 5.0.3 (Free Trial) in your Docs is States:

"Time of the ESX host and the vCenter Server must be synchronized.

In the Configuration without any server NTP tab I put a time but when go to Putty and connect to the host, and write the command 'date', the time is different from what I put.

1 - is this problem due to lack NTP server?

2 is it possible that I put the analytical UI VM and VM timezone to my zone schedule without host adjustment? (is this true?) (Is it that enough, I just set time zone of PAHO)

    Please help me

    Hello

You must set the parameters of your ESXi host NTP.

There is no timezoned in ESXi I know.

Make sure when you look through the settings of Date and time on the ESXI host right now is what should be based on your local time.

Let the time vC Ops to UCT. That should ensure the VAPP have the same time as the ESXI host.

When you start the TIME you can check the time on the virtual computer is the same as hosts yoru.

  • How to check for the ConnectionState of ESX hosts

    Hello

I would like to be able to check the status of connection to a host list before executing a block of code against the list of hosts. If the host is in a disconnected state, I want also to write in a name csv file and connection status of any host that is disconnected before you run the code block against the rest of the hosts in the list.

That's what I've tried so far:

    $ESX = "C:\Temp\host.txt".

    foreach ($vhost to $ESX)

    Get-VMHost $ESX | Select Name, ConnectionState
    If ($vhost. ConnectionState - eq 'offline') {}

    {
    $vhost | Export-CSV "C:\Temp\report.csv" - NoTypeInformation

    Try like this

    $ESX = "C:\Temp\host.txt".

    Get-VMHost-name $ESX |

    Where {$_.} ConnectionState - eq 'offline'} |

    Select Name, ConnectionState |

  • The profiles breaks iSCSI host configuration

I determined that host profiles do not support configuring vSS correctly to for iSCSI jumbo frame support.

How the host profiles work when applied is that they will seduce all of the existing switches and then re - set their place, problem with the way in which it does this is that it supports all the features required. I.e. Jumbo frames.

I can get my understanding confirmed (host profiles are not fully cooked) and ask the next question.

Is it possible to tell a host profile to ignore elements like a vSS configuration? My review, it appears that once the host profile was created from a host of sample you can not say NOT to implement parts of it.

Fix - now host profiles are not fully cooked.

  • Port gets mode error on Cisco catalyst 3020 after the reboot ESX host

    Hi all!

I know that this may be the right forum for this questin, nut I m hoping someone can give men a response. Since I m a newbe for switches I use the assistants of Cisco network and Cisco will help me to access the SAN switches.

As I said in the topic ports gets error on switch mode, most of the time I restart the host. I have to disable and then enable port it to rise again. Also, I get this message in the switch:

This port has been disabled because the link turned out be fluctuating between high and low States quickly.

Reason could be bad physical connector hardware or drivers on the device of the OSH connection switch port is faulty.

Recommendation: Replace physical connector or upgrade the drivers on the switch port or try to replace the cable and re-enable the port.

Is some setting that I can change the switch to make this disappear? All commands in telnet againt the switch?

    Maybe that's your problem:

  • ESX host cannot ping the default gateway.

    Hi Experts,

I have connected ESX hosts to switch cisco as well by the ILO and other ports.

    Cisco switch configuration;

int gig 1/0/21 and 1/0/13 gig and gig 1/0/14 are configured as access ports because they are carriers/tagging vLan as a 306.

Cisco switch, I can ping the ip address of the ILO, but I can't ping the IP address management and vice versa.

    IP Managment

    10.197.204.10

    255.255.255.0

    10.197.204.1

    VLAN 306

Attached the screenshot shown in the diagram.

    your help will be appreciated.

    Concerning

Don't know what it is, but there must be something simple that you miss

Let's go through each step of configuration for both ESXi network connections (ILO work already, so we do not touch).

Check the configuration of switch port physical interface GigabitEthernet1/0/13 and 1/0/14.

    switchport access vlan 306

    switchport mode access

    spanning tree portfast

Only connect the cable network for vmnic0 to host and make sure what vmnic0 presents itself as 'connected' in the DCUI

Make sure the VLAN ID is empty.

Make sure you then the IP settings are correct (IE without typos,...) and restart the management network from the main menu.

  • Replacement of the corporate network switches how ESX and VM will react?

We replace all our switches in current network with new gear. All our ESX network connections are redundant (console, vmotion and virtual machine) with each connection associated with a different switch (for example the virtual machine NIC is connected to different switches and the same for other groups of ports). I was wondering what will happen when migrate us to the new switches. We intend to make this port a port at a time. My guess is that when we have the first virtual machine network cable and move again preconfigured port switch all the VMS on this NETWORK adapter will switch to the other NETWORK adapter as if it was a failure. The migrated Server NETWORK card will be auto-negotiation with the new port and become availble for use but VM will not request for load balancing between the two network cards. We then will at some point to move the other virtual machine from the old network card switch to a new switch and the VM are switched to the new other switch port and as the first card NETWORK occurs autonegotiation and the nic will become available. But how do I get the network traffic balancing across both connections of NIC's virtual machine? I understand that load balancing of virtual machine through the NETWORK interface only to the market and vmotions card - is this true and if so how can I force a reload balance or even manually load balance... Thank you

Failback only works when you run active / standby NIC.  If you are running active-active, you can set the host mode maint, let it drain and then leave the mode maint to allow virtual machines to come back and live on some Teddy they land on.

With respect to the passage of the switch the riskier part is to make sure that you have all the VLAN defined on the 'new' switch and that there is a layer 3 path to the front door of this switch.  When you migrate the first server I would put in mode now, put some DRS in manual mode and then make the transition.  Then a vMotion machine virtual not essential (or 1 VM for each VIRTUAL local area network) on to this host to make sure that the installer of L2 and L3 works correctly.  Make sure that the field of L2 on the old switches can talk to the L2 area on the new switches.

  • After that I changed the Duplex parameter on NIC's Service console, I am not able to connect the ESX host

    Hi all

    Please help solve my problem.

After that I changed the Duplex parameter on NIC's Service console, I am unable to connect the ESX host. How can I reset the 100 MB NETWORK card duplex. Can someone help me please.

    Concerning

    Vijay

    Hello

As the bulb you have two problems that are not related.

    (1) duplex setting, your switch and NIC must match. If one is assigned to auto-negotiation, then the other must be set to auto-negotiation. Personally, I tend to let auto-negotiation unless there is an absolute reason to spend. If you then turn on the both sides of the interface, the switch port and esxcfg-NICS allows you to change the duplex, etc.

    (2) passwords for root are not related to the network unless you have also run esxcfg-auth authentication remote.  The only time I saw what you have here is when the system is configured to try to authenticate remote and not locally.

The two problems are fixable by booting into single-user mode, set the duplex and reset the password.
