The longevity of the SSD are questionable?

Hello everyone,

Many of you me guided properly 'which is the best bang for my money?' and turning towards better, more small & fast SSD. I dug up as much information mainly through: "Tom Hardware.com" which is maintained w/tip all the latest tech PCs. I came across this research article describing the gradual loss of the SSD performance, due to its circuits of NAND flash. Rather than paraphrase something I'm very few warned with, here's the partial direct quote: "the future of SSDS is cloudy, because as the circuits of NAND flash-based SSD shrinks, increase of the density." can someone clarify the nature of the circuits of NAND flash-based (similar to USB memory devices?) and its advantages and disadvantages... ? And above all, what kind of calendar are they suggesting SSD can hold is no longer their substantial superiority on mechanical hard drives?  It has been my experience every time I turn to the most recent upgrade in PC technology, it invariably becomes almost obsolete in the time when I first initialize to my desk top! Considering the costly currently available SSD, I wonder if it would be better to wait for the next generation of HDs, or at least a significant decrease cost of SSDS based on quality.
Thank you to all who help my "noodle-challenged electronically" stagnation in the dark-ages!

Peace, Alan

The problem is with the confidentiality business that you often don't really know what is "just around the corner". Ideas, developments and concepts are revealed with lots of advertising and paper now and then companies who drop them closing the door and all is silent until there is all of a sudden, if it works.

Always changing too. When I bought my SSD 6 months ago, that the Council was only use RAID because it masks the readers of the o/s and TRIM does not work. I see on the Intel web site now have a utility that will apply TRIM for RAID 0 disks. So now we have 1 TB SSD available (at a cost) as stripeing on SSD doesn't have quite the same connotations as on a HARD drive.

Cloud storage comes at a financial cost that soon kills the 'unlimited' nature, what he possesses is robustness. Service providers have the resilience in their systems that does not have a single hard drive of your PC and I don't see online storage corresponding to local, 3 GB/s speeds off inner fiber without talking about the infrastructure of context is still far away.

  • Buy list HCL SATA or SAS SSD?  Why the consumer grade SATA SSD are meaningless.

    Hello

I run a node 4 VSAN 6 Cluster with a LSI SAS in Raid-0 Mode controller listed HCL (a 975 queue depth) to which I currently attached: 3 x 10 k SAS Enterprise RPM hard drives and 1 x Samsung 850 SATA Pro 512 GB SSD. The nodes are the same.

These SSD is due to budgetary constraints. I too put in service the SSD 512 GB to 400 GB and they seem to controllers and BIOS as 400GO devices.

Performance is horrible. Overall, VM feel morose.

When you make a copy of a file of DVD ISO file (say 3GB) on one virtual computer to another, I get extremely high 100 MS to 300ms or even higher disk latencies on both virtual machines. When a regeneration occurs because I take a node in Maint.mode with 'full datamigration', or I re - apply a strategy of backup to say "band bandwidth 2" to "stripe-width 3", the whole cluster crushed essentially to a halt. " VM has become so slow and on Linux VM I get same kernel-messages on scsi timeouts, etc. None of the work of the virtual machine, they freeze and basically die because "the disc is extremely unresponsive.

I'm not alone in this. I have read many similar stories on the net and it often comes down to the 'consumer grade SATA SSD' who these Samsungs are after all.

I guess I have the same problem.

My question is this: I have the right to replace the Samsung 850 Pro with either a SAS disk SSD Sandisk which is listed HCL * or * using Intel DC S3700 SATA SSD that are also in the HCL currently for 6 VSAN.

What I don't understand is: ' if the SATA SSD that I use currently, form a bottleneck due to the depth of the SATA Interface of 32 queue, how can we * all * SATA SSD be on the HCL at all?

I doubt that these Intel DC S3700 are much faster than the Samsung 850 Pro and they are two SATA drives and they both have a personal 32 queuedepth and all the interface SATA has a 32 port queuedepth pro. So how can disks SATA works in a system of VSAN. I just makes no sense.

Everyone is to fight to death on "queue-depth queue depth queue depth. Cormac Hogan, Duncan Epping, everyone who is an authority on VSAN. A queue-depth too low controllers were thrown out of the HCL etc etc etc

When I look at the SSD Intel S3700 HCL wrote:

Mandatory features:Drive performance, disc reliability, queue depth, SMART SATA Surprise Power Removal, trim attributes / Unmap, Cache write, write the NDR

It says "tail-depth" as one of the requirements that responds to this SDS. But SATA, by definition, has a maximum queue-depth 32 which is much too small. So, how can it meet "tail-depth"? It is SATA!

The Intel DC S3700 would cost me about half of the money the SAS SSD Sandisk and of course, if Intel is going to solve my problems of performance, then I'll take those. But if I'm just as much trouble afterwards because of the queue depth of the SATA Interface of 32, then I better invest in the SAS SSD (but which could exhaust my budget for other things so I'd rather not).

Anyone can shed some light on this?

(edit: I changed the title to better reflect my findings)

Update: I bit the bullit, obtained a second mortgage, said my child may not be able to go to College and I bought the SAS SSD (Sandisk 200 GB 6 G SAS). In each of the four nodes, I did a complete data migration, replaced the Samsung 850 Pro SATA SSD with the SSD SAS and macaroni holy, all my problems disappeared.

The whole system feels much more receptive and do things like clone a virtual machine (which would grind the whole cluster to stop) never stops working like nothing happens.

Before, when I did a simple copy of an ISO to a virtual computer DVD file to another, I would like to get, maybe, 20 MB/s and the entire cluster has started feeling lethargic until the copy job is completed. Now, I get speeds ranging from 80 to 90 MB/s and so bright and responsive.

    What a difference!

    I'm a very happy man.

Moreover, my network is a 1 Gbps where each node has two NIC in a LACP LAG and I can clearly see a node to talk to another network node 1 NIC and talk to another node on the other card NETWORK LACP nicely splits the traffic on the two cards.

The system feels so fast now and reconstructions / present a new application of storage policies is difficult to have an impact, and generally occur much more quickly than before.

And really, the only thing I did was swap the Samsung 850 Pro SATA SSD with these SAS SSD.

Lesson learned: either pay the money of the SAS SSD (which are on the HCL, of course) who is the best, or get certified company VSAN grade SATA SSD but STAY AWAY to consumers rank of SATA SSD because they do not have what it takes. They cannot empty their queues fast enough and all clutter as soon as there is a bit of the system load.

Just don't do it. Forget the consumer SATA rank. It's like throwing money down the toilet. I've been there and I learned the hard way. Let me be the stubborn donkey, so you don't ;-)

New versions of Flash have a sign installed on your system for the control of the settings.

In Windows XP, start > settings > Control Panel > Flash Player, click each tab and change the setting "ask...". ». Most likely your guests are coming in the tab "storage." By using the parameters of "Block"... "can let Flash on some sites.

  • Change HDD to the SSD, what are the options?

Hi guys, new to the forum, I just bought a thinkpad x130e during a sales event on one of the local retailer, pretty excited, because I like the rugged design.

I am looking to upgrade to 320G HDD for one SSD 128G... but I have no installation disc 7 windows very practical, so, what are the options for me to install the operating system (windows 7).

I don't know if there is a way to transfer the whole of the SSD HARD drive? is there a trick to perform? or quite simply, I just bought the new copy of windows?

COS, I noticed that I have a windows7 pro product key at the bottom of my thinkpad, I kinda don't want to lose money.

    Help, please...

You don't need to buy another copy of Win7. You will need

1 SSD. It has to be is not 7mm thick, the most common 9.5 mm thick.

2 USB box for your HARD drive,

    3. software to "clone" the content of your disk to your SSD. Acronis True Image is a well-respected package that does this. There are also a few free utilities that can do this, however, I'm not familiar with them.

    Procedure:

    1. move the HARD disc on the outer envelope.

2 put the SSD in the X130e.

3 reboot from the HARD disk. (You need to interrupt the boot with the blue ThinkVantage button to specify).

    4. install Acronis (or equivalent).

5 RIP clone disk. You will have to tell the software how you resize partitions because you go to a smaller drive.

    6 restart from SSD.

    Hi Peter,.

You can change the color of the HTML box around the Captivate project from:

    1. in the menu bar, click themes and select the skin editor.

    2. in the skin Editor window, open the borders page (second means of icon on the left, under the name of skin).

    3. in the theme section, specify the background color of the HTML.

  • Increase the performance of MAC with the SSD upgrade

I have a 21.5-inch iMac model 14.1 (end 2013) with 8 GB of memory and a 1 TB drive. On this, I use some applications in memory such as Adobe CS 5.5 and VMWare Fusion 8.1.1. I have Applecare on the machine until September 2017. I often find myself running out of memory. My goto solution would be to increase the memory and replace the hard drive with an SSD. I fear, however, that this cancels my Applecare. My research indicates that while that frowned upon, I can upgrade my memory and keep my Applecare as long as it is done by an authorized by Apple, but if I do the SSD I'm out of luck for the installed components. My thought is that I can get an external SSD and move the ' WIndows 10' VM (s), as well as expand and move the swapfiles for the SSD system.»

My questions are am I right about the Applecare and warranty and I plan to use an external SSD to accelerate performance and ease the work of memory constraints?

I have a Macbook Air in 2010 and also a 2008 iMac - both with only 4 GB of memory (you have twice as much), both running El Capitan and the two with SSD - and perform very well. The 2008 iMac used to have a rotating disc which has recently failed, with the replacement of SSD, it is a remarkable transformation with the new SSD, it seems very quickly for me. Both have Photoshop CS4, which is not used much more, but they run this software very well, as well as MS Office 2011 and other programs such as Mail, Safari, Firefox, etc. (Firefox + Photoshop together put a noticeable load on machines, in fact, but while I sometimes hear the fans come on the Macbook Air, it maintains not up very well) No slowdown) You'll be in great shape with a SSD for your newer computer. These old machines that I use have Core 2 Duo CPUs, chips relatively slow, but they seem very quickly with the SSD.

You will need to check with Apple directly on your AppleCare and so that would be affected. I don't know that anyone is not Apple should trust this question.
