The safest method to remove several old snapshots

I use tool ASM/VE of Equallogic to make shots, but on 1 of my virtual machines, it has not clean properly on the rise and has failed in some shots.  I want to use the safest procedure to remove/commit these clichés.

A further complication, as evidenced by the screenshots, Snapshot Manager shows that I have 4 snapshots, but when I browse the data store, I see that there are some files in component 19/2 snap who only sees the Snapshot Manager.

So, should I use the "Remove all" option in the Snapshot Manager, or remove the buttons one at a time, I guess from which individual snap?

Fine thanks

Chad

Hello.

The safest approach would be to start at the bottom of the list of snapshots and remove them one at a time while working your way to the top of the list.  Using the button remove all potentially consume a lot of disk space.

Good luck!

  • The safest way to remove the storage

I caught a thread several days ago, but I want to start a new. What is the safest way to remove a data store? Poster said that it removes the lun from VCenter. An answering machine for the post explains how VMware and Cormac advise unmount and detach and then they did not, but the lun would be then deleted on the side of the table. Is one better way rather than the other? VMware recommends unmount and detach because the removal of the lun has too much IO in the table? Maybe he's zeroing in on the blocks?

I have 12 MON I have to shrink, but I obviously can't. I need to re - create. I then am curious about the best way for me to remove hosts. Delete vmfs, or remove/detach. After each of them, both of course would need to have the table to remove guest access to this device/lun.

According to me, it seems logical to me if:

    (1) remove the data store, if you want to get rid of the LUN (followed by deleting on the side of the table)

    (2) delete the data store, if you want to get rid of its content, but want to reuse the same LUN by recreating a new store of data on it.

My experience is too limited to comment on the possibility of entering ODA in scenario 2 (followed) by removing the logic unit number, but we can say that scenario 1, simply works.

I have updates in 2008 that take up to 17 GB of space and delete one by one will take an entire day, I don't want to do. I don't know if a service pack removes old files and add new ones, but I know I can't leave 17 GB of space snowball in 30 concerts just updates windows that are obsolete in a month.

You can use C:\Windows\System32\compcln.exe to remove the unnecessary files after Service Pack 2. Service Pack 2 cannot be uninstalled after running this program.

Load the shots in layers. Used Edit > Auto alignment of layers, followed by Edit > layers of automatic mixture using seamless tones and colors, it would do the same.  I could just go and check it out.

  • Recommended method to remove a snapshot of the VM?

Recently, I tried to remove a snapshot of a virtual computer Manager of VM snapshots.  The virtual machine was 80GB in size with an existing snapshot of 50 GB, I gracefully shutdown the OS/VM before you remove the snapshot.  Once I started the withdrawal, all was well until we arrived at 95% (the number 95/99% we all know).  After some research, I decided to cancel the process and restart management via the host services.  This solves the problem and the snapshot appeared to remove.

A few days later, I was working on another task and ended up experience of the 'an internal error has occurred... ". "Details: object reference not set.... error, this has taken a while to correct but has finally been resolved.  It showed me I thought the snapshot previously removed, not actually are deleted;  I have now lost confidence in the VMware Snapshot Manager!

As I have to go through the process of elimination of many VM snapshots, in the coming weeks.

I want to avoid having to experience this kind of problem again, I want to make sure that the snapshot of the virtual machine is deleted and as fast as possible.

Is there a better way to go through the snapshot deletion process?  Perhaps via the CLI or a tool/utility VMware or third?

Is there a "verification process" that can be taken to ensure that the snapshot has been actually deleted?  It seems that I can't trust GUI/vSphere Client when it comes to check the instant withdrawal.

Look at the Snapshot Manager is a reliable reference point in environments with fast, healthy and instant storage infrastructure that does not grow very large (50 GB is very large).

As a.p., VMware snapshot handling is super reliable, so don't panic when the Snapshot Manager does not display what you expect.  ESXi is very strong in keeping your data via instant recovery logs.

    To answer your questions:

"Is there a preferred way to go through the snapshot deletion process?  Perhaps via the CLI or a tool/utility VMware or third? »

-The first step is to prevent snapshots more and more very large sizes and keep sufficient free space on your data for overhead warehouse operational.  Insofar as the preferred method, continue to use Snapshot Manager.  If you think that the virtual machine still works from a snapshot, you can see these files in the data store Navigator.  In the past, we had to use the CLI of ESXi to merge and clean up the trees in the snapshot safely.  VMware has introduced a version of this method in 5.x GUI.  It is called "Consolidation".  See this excellent KB article:

VMware KB: Consolidation of snapshots in vSphere 5.x

"Is there a"verification process "that can be taken to ensure that the snapshot has been actually deleted?  It seems that I can't trust GUI/vSphere Client when it comes to check the instant withdrawal. "

Manager of snapshots and the field "A need for Consolidation" are your first indication.  Understand the snapshot files stored with the virtual machine will give you a greater level of comfort with the internal components.  I recommend this article:

  • Consolidate the Snap Shot or remove the snapshot, which should not

    Dear Experts,

We have a Linux virtual machine, and we recently increased its vmdk to add more than 10 GB but before doing so, we took a snapshot of State off the machine. Increase now the space is done and now if I see the drive for this machine, it shows me 'thick' 35GB

It is the only snap shot we have for this machine. If I click with the right button on computer and go the snapshot > I see here snapshot manager, take a snapshot, back to the snapshot current and last is to consolidate.

If I go to the Snapshot Manager, I see the point where I am now and the last point that is marked as 'before you increase the space', so I need to click on consolidate OR click the old cliché and delete to maintain the current state of the machine? How the two are different consolidate and remove all?

If the disk is thick, I can still get rid of snapshots? Please see attached images

Thank you and waiting for response.

So what I understand now is the consolidation option should be used when on condition is true:

operation "snapshot disks compress after delete or clear all ', other wise I should go for delete snapshot in normal condition, please correct me if I got hurt?

Peacebuilding operation removes all your recovery logs 'redundant '. But removing any operation remove your shots and consolidate on a single disc.

Consolidation will cause no change in the number of snapshots. But delete / delete all will remove them actually snapshots and the present changes in this snapshot will be written back to the parent disk. And also always remove snapshot operation was launched with a peacebuilding operation.

Let me know if you need additional information here.

Delta records are created whenever a snapshot is taken?

    Yes.

I have a vcenter Server virtual and it have a snapshot that we created when we start building the vcenter, can I remove it so that I am connected to vcenter server using Vsphere client.

Yes you can delete it. But since its vCenter, please ensure that you have enough space available in your data store to perform a snapshot of deletion operation. The required space are perfectly explained by Duncan Epping in his blog...

  • Removal of old clichés of Snapshot Manager

    Hi all

I have a problem with my backup solution (GhettoVCB as it is free and works very well), in that he failed to halfway through one day, he left little a snapshot in the local data store that I see in the Snapshot Manager. The backup fails by saying that a snapshot exists. I created a new snapshot and thought this might get around it, but it didn't.

I want to know is I can delete the snapshot/s in the Snapshot Manager and does not affect the virtual machine? Should I choose 'Delete' on the snapshot I think is causing the problem (the former) or delete both an old and new? I saw so many forums saying do not use "remove all" that you run out of space. so should I just delete one at a time? Hope it makes sense.

Basically, I want to return to a State of no snapshots and the rear space and I hope that my backup working again.

    See the image below:

    Thank you

    snapshot.jpg

In this case, I see no problem with the deletion of snapshots. Way the easiest is to open the Snapshot Manager and click on the button 'Clear all', which will merge all snapshots in their basic disks. Because snapshots are very small it should take only a few minutes. This can be done while the virtual machine is running.
