The search in Vista problems

I am running Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit and am shocked by the inept research system.  There is absolutely no way to search for a file in ways other than by name.  I am looking for a picture or a file that was taken on a date in December 2010 or January 2011 and there is no specific name attached.  Windows XP allowed me to search by date so it makes absolutely no sense to have removed this possibility in an upgraded operating system.

Any suggestions are appreciated except where you open the Windows Photo Gallery and see the dated files.  I do not use this program for all images, it does not appear in this viewer.  Also, I often need to search for files by date and photo gallery would not be appropriate to this need.

Windows 7 [I don't know Vista] - If you click in the search box, a small drop-down menu appears that has a couple of keys in blue, click on date modifed, you can define a single date or a range, and then enter a keyword, if necessary [elephant or everything that you might have used the name of the photo or the properties] and back / click the search icon.

Additional improvements [similar to Ronnie]

I used the method of Ronnie put up a saved in my documents search using the keyword 'file' - it takes several seconds to run during the implementation, but then runs quickly in the real job.  I click on this shortcut to search [saved in Windows explore, Favorites] and enter the keyword required for the task in hand [elephant or other] and then he looks as intended to elephant in my documents [why I 37 files containing that Word is beyond me].

You can restrict the search by using the key

name:

and it will limit the search to files whose name contains the word elephant [8 results].

I used the example that I had put in place to avoid errors in my explanation.  You can use any other search terms.  The syntax is http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/desktopsearch/default.mspx

and I think you'll find a key to use for the photos [it is a long document, so it takes time to study].

I hope it's clear.  It is more complicated to implement than just using the date filter, but could save you time if you do this research frequently.

Good luck

    1. open an elevated command prompt. To do this, clickStart, click principally made programs, accessories, right-click Guest, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password, or click on allow.

    2. type the following command and press ENTER:

  • Is it possible to get the functionality of Windows XP old search in Vista?

I find the Windows Vista search program to be absolutely horrible.  I just want key Windows-F (or click Start, then search) and then just choose the drive I want to search or enter a path to the search.  Or, just right-click on a file and search from the context menu.  Now I have to browse to the folder or drive, type in my search term, then I can actually get to a few search options, after clicking on search search tools, then advanced, then check the box to include hidden just places to get to what would be the search start options screen in Windows XP.  It's embarrassing.

While he gives me my results of 1000 or more, I can't just browse them as they come.  You see, as I read the results, it's inserting results above where I just read.  For this reason, there is no need to browse through the results until after he finished looking.  I don't have it to be sorted on the fly.

Suppose that is missing a column, such as the file size or date.  If I add the columns, it starts the search.  Powerful and robust?  Perhaps.  However, Microsoft should consider ease of use when they designed it.

I am responsible for COMPUTER and usually would have no problem trying to work with new programs.  I've been running Vista for about 1 year.  This isn't a transition as going to the Ribbon in Office 2007, where I hate it, at first, then I learn to love it and never want to go back.  There's not a lot of love coming from Vista search.

Then, does anyone know how to get the old search tool in Vista, or somehow get search Vista behave like XP?

    HomerTNachoCheese,
There is not a way to customize the default search features in Vista to make it look like XP.  There may be some 3rd party software that looks and works like the XP search, but none that I can recommend.  Here is a link to Windows Search 4.0.  You can give it a try and see if you like the features a bit more.

  • Word 7 crashes when you try to import the Contact address using wizard envelope - Vista problem?

Title says all... am processor amd quadcore 2750 8 GHz with Vista Home Premium and MS Office 07 Small business.  The Envelope Wizard worked once, but word crashes whenever I try to import an Outlook 07 contacts address. Some reading of literature in ms site suggests that this may be a problem of vsta.  Can you help me solve it m e?

    Hello Bob Cannon Surrey,.

Thanks for posting your question on the Microsoft answers Forum.

Once Word hangs, it leaves corruption behind him. When Word opens it creates a large number of hidden temporary files. When the file is closed, they are no longer needed and are closed. However, if Word crashes and fails to recover, these temporary files are left behind and can cause problems or prevent you re-opening your document, or failed to start.

Using Windows Explorer, look in the Windows temp folder. It is most likely in C:\Windows\Temp or : \Documents and Settings\Settings\Temp, unless you have moved to another location.  You can safely remove everything in this folder. Windows does not allow you to delete anything actually being used, so you may have to restart to release the locked files.

You will need to search for additional files that begin with ~$*.do* and delete them. Temporary files are usually hidden then click on advanced options and select the option search for hidden files. You need to configure Explorer to show hidden files and the extensions of the file types that you want to know (Tools > Folder Options).

Repeat the search in places where you store your Word documents, by default the Documents folder and subfolders that you may have created some files named *.tmp.

Then try again and see if you can import your contact addreesses successfully.

If please reply back and let us know if it helped to solve your problem or if you need assistance. Please include the exact error messages.

    Sincerely,

    Marilyn

  • Typing about: config in the bar always results in the search results of the supplier, which prevents me to change the settings that could solve this problem to address.

I just installed Firefox 29.0.1 and immediately after the restart of the browser, type the addresses in the address bar has given rise to a page of search results instead of the Web page I typed. I know that this behavior is due to a setting in the confuguration, but I can't Setup since every time I have type about: config in the address bar, I get search results! I need to access the configuration, but this little gem in the update prevents me to do.

    • Make sure that you type in the address bar and not in the search bar.
    • Make sure you do not enter a space between about: and config if you use the address bar.

    You can attach a screenshot?

Not related to your question, but...

You may need to update some plug-ins. Check your plug-ins and update if necessary:

  • buy the update or complete, if vista problems

It's about whether I should buy windows 7 updated version or full.

dv4-1275mx has had problems for many months now with slow speeds, freezes, crashes, locks etc..  (note I had to reinstall the computer to its factory State a couple of times, and the problem persists so im sure its not virus) initially, I thought it was causing Media Center all the problems that I always get an error "media smart tv TSR has stopped working" and always seemed to be something running one the down payment (with the busy light flashes like crazy) the computer running slowly.  After that all these months I just found it's the registry causing most because it works fine now (after the execution of the tool pc registry mechanic) but still with media center and occasional freezes with windows Explorer errors.

If I use windows 7 upgrade, if it "recycle" files of vista (which might be corrupt) continues to give me the same problems in windows 7.  If this is the case, will install the full version of windows 7 get rid of my vista problems (I guess they are problems and not hp vista).

I see that nobody has answered your original question - what version should you buy?

The decision you need to make has been described by one of the others - do an 'upgrade' or a 'clean install '?  You will have both of these options if you purchase the upgrade version.  You will get no benefit at all to purchase the full version.

It is always better to do an install clean (which erases everything on the machine), especially if you are having problems with the system.  Yet once again, this can be done with the upgrade package.

Thanks for posting on the Microsoft answers Forum.  First I would make sure your video card drivers are updated.  I know it's a whole new machine, but it is always good to make sure you have the latest version of the driver.  Then can go to the game icon and then right-click on it and select Properties, then the Compatibility tab and then check the box run in compatibility mode.  I would suggest trying to run in Windows XP (SP3) mode first and see if that helps.
