The virtual machine failover and restart with vSphere HA time

Hello

What factors would affect the time required for vSphere HA to computers failover virtual to a host failed to another active host in the cluster? It would be important how much space drive by using virtual machine is or how big it is? Or who should not matter?

Thank you

It should not matter. HA initiates the failover and the powers on the virtual machine regardless of size. Note, however, that there could be a delay in time OS/App.

Another parameter that can affect the failover time is the number of virtual machines being switched at some point. If you have more healthy hosts in the cluster, then VM failovers happen simultaneously reduce the failover time.

  • What is the interval of time between the virtual machine Linux and ESXi host synchronization?

I have ESX5.0 with a centos6 installed on this linux virtual machine.

After the installation of vmware for Linux virtual machine tools, I activated the time synchronization between the virtual machine linux and ESXi host through vmware-toolbox-cmd.

I wonder what is the interval of time between the virtual machine linux and ESXi host synchronization? If I quickly time OS system, when the OS system time will sync back to the ESXi host?

    According to http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/techpaper/Timekeeping-In-VirtualMachines.pdf:

By default, the demon checks the guest only once per minute operating system clock.

However, depending on whether the guest is behind or in front of the result is different. So, please read the section "periodic synchronization" (at least) in the document mentioned above.

    Hello

    Untitled.png

    Hello

This is the VMware KB which provide a workaround to enable this option for VMs on ESXi hosts in cluster HA active.

VMware KB: Automatic Virtual Machine Startup / Shutdown in ESXi hosts in a cluster VSA is turned off

Last time (couple of years back), when I was researching on this topic, I found that these settings are applied only when the virtual machine is on the same host ESXi, and once his migrated to another ESXi host for this VM autostart option is lost and needs to be reconfigured again. I don't know if this behavior changed with new versions of vSphere.

    I hope this helps.

  • VSphere Client limit "the virtual machine console.

    Hello

I have done several searches and could not find anything relevant so I thought I'd post the question.

I have ESXi 4.0 running with the installation of 3 virtual machines. I connect to the ESXi 4.0 via Client.exe vSphere hypervisor in windows.  I have a couple of people using the same account. For this reason, we have noticed that, if one of us is connected to a virtual machine, the other person can open the console of the virtual machine also and mess with what they do.  He warns that many people are watching the same virtual machine with the bar at the top of the screen indicating there are now 2 sessions of active console.

My question is: is there a way to limit the client to only allow a connection active console both to a virtual machine?  That way if someone is already logged in / virtual console and a view, no one else can.

I understand that I can create several vSphere client accounts with restrictions on the permission to have each account only have access to a specific virtual machine, but I would like to avoid that if possible. Everyone should have access to each virtual machine... but not at the same time...

Perhaps there is a configuration file (or the customer's option) to limit connections of the console to one (I guess that there is a limit somewhere?).  I found there is a "VpxClient.exe.config", but it doesn't look like this kind of information can be changed here?  If this is something that is encoded in the software I will drop it, but I thought I don't know if I asked

Thanks for your time to answer this question,

    Dan

by default, it is set as 25, but that can be changed.  However, it is on a customer by customer basis, so as far as I know, there is no comprehensive way to do this.

I can't do anything else until I get comments. Can anyone recommend a way to solve this problem?

I thought I knew what I was doing, but apparently not...

    I agree

Two a problem with the new drive.

    1. You get the error message comes from the basic disk with a different size than the disks of the snapshot.
    2. With a size of 256 GB, you will not be able to create snapshots of the disk (on ESXi prior to 5.0 with a block size of 1 MB)

What you can try to do is to edit the file PJAEast - DL01_1.vmdk :

    • 536870912 VMFS 'PJAEast-DL01_1 - flat hard' RW--> RW 70943040 VMFS 'PJAEast-DL01_1 - flat hard. "
    • DDB. Geometry.Cylinders = "33418'-> ddb.geometry.cylinders = '4416.

After that, I would recommend to clone the virtual disk to a new one, replace the virtual disk in the virtual machine settings and resize it to a maximum of 254GB (see "calculates the time system required by the snapshot files" at http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1012384)

    • vmkfstools-i PJAEast-DL01_1 - 000003.vmdk PJAEast - DL01_1a.vmdk

  • Restrict the mouse in the virtual machine window

    Hello

I'm on a Setup dual monitor.  Is it possible to limit the pointer of the mouse in the VMWare window, while I use it?  I read that you can uninstall VMTools to do, but I would rather not go too far.

    Thank you.

    Pat

Under normal circumstances without VMware Tools installed should click in the view of the Virtual Machine so that it (the Virtual Machine) to capture the keyboard and mouse input and with VMware Tools installed all we need to do is right-click the virtual machine screen and captures automatically entered.  So without VMware Tools installed on must press a combination of keysCtrl + command() () for the Virtual Machine display release (ungrab) the keyboard and the mouse in the virtual machine.

On my system with 'Always optimize the mouse for games' selected, I have to manually ungrab the mouse and keyboard of the VM to have a control outside of the Virtual Machine (or return on the Mac side).  The value default entry selected (automatic mouse for games) is automatically entered/ungrabbed as the mouse is moved to the edge of the screen of the virtual machine.

If the behavior that I have just described does not work on your system I not sure why what I have described is not something default behavior which is just supposed to act than anything on my system, however the parameter added to preferences file may or not help but I guess it's worth a try.

    pref.motionUngrab = "FALSE"

With the VM within the guest operating system stop, not suspended and VMware Fusion closed, add the parameter above to the "${USER} / Users / / Library/Preferences/VMware Fusion/preferences ' file.  JSYK this parameter is used in VMware Workstation and can have no effect in VMware Fusion and I mean only that as I have no other suggestions then uninstall VMware Tools.

  • Best way to back up the virtual machine

What better way to back up a virtual machine with snapshots?

I have copied the VM directory to a backup folder, but then had problems to restore.  Just right?

Not sure if it was because of the way the backup that I did.

    Sorry my English!

It is recommended to create the snapshot with the VM or disable?

Snapshots can be created with the virtual machine or not. With the virtual machine running, it may take more time to create the snapshot, and you won't 'lose' disk space, due to the State of memory that will be instantaneous.

When possible, I recommend you take the snapshot with the virtual machine power off.

Yes, you can copy the Virtual Machine to it or use to try a snapshot to take/remove or use it as the destination when using VMware vCenter Converter Standalone.  Search the Forum that this was widely covered before.

  • Can I download can imagine them in the data store when the Virtual Machine is running

    Chris

If you want to have a consistent state, Yes.

If you just need a consistent state to the accident, you can create a snapshot, download the base vmdk files and then validate once again the snapshot operation.

You cannot download files in use (except the read-only).
