Time Machine broke my office

My story I had just to edit a picture on my desk at the right size.

"Not much". I thought "I'll just use time machine."

I want to use time machine, but my macbook pro crashed and had to restart. I went back to time machine and tried.

Files said they copied, but I can not find them and when I go to the finder and try to get into the office, it says quote "cannot open the folder"desktop"because you don't have permission to view its contents."

So what I do now?

Thank you for your help,

Alex

Please, back up all data before proceeding.

This procedure will unlock all your user (not system files) files and reset their ownership, permissions and default access controls. If you have voluntarily set special values for these attributes on any of your files, they will be be restored. In this case, either stop there, or be ready to recreate the settings if necessary. Do that after checking these settings that did not cause the problem. If none of that is meaningful to you, you need not worry about this, but do not follow the instructions below.

Step 1

If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to step 2.

Triple-click anywhere in the next line to this page to select this option:

sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags -h nosappnd,noschg,nosunlnk,nouappnd,nouchg {} + -exec chown -h $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -h -N {} + -type d -exec chmod -h +x {} + 2>&-

Copy the selected text in the Clipboard by pressing Control-C key combination.

Launch the Terminal application integrated in one of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first letters of his name in a Spotlight search. Select from the results (it should be at the top).

☞ In the Finder, select go utilities ▹ of menu bar or press the combination of keys shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

Paste in the Terminal window by pressing Command + V. I tried these instructions only with the Safari browser. If you use another browser, you may need to press the return key after pasting.

You will be asked your password of connection that are not displayed when you type. Type carefully, and then press return. You can get a warning to be careful. If you do not have a password, you will need to configure one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your user name "is not in the sudoers file", then you have not logged as an administrator.

The command may take several minutes to run, depending on the number of files you have. Wait for a new line ending with a dollar sign ($) to appear, and then quit Terminal.

Step 2 (optional)

Take this step only if you have trouble with the phase 1, if you prefer not to consider, or if this does not resolve the problem.

Start in recovery mode. You may be prompted to select a language, then the OS X Utilities appears.

If you use FileVault 2, select disk utility, then select the icon for the volume FileVault startup ("Macintosh HD", unless you have given it a different name.) It will be nested under another icon of the disc. Select open in the file menu and enter your login password when you are prompted. Then quit disk utility must be returned to the main screen.

Select

Utilities ▹ Terminal

in the menu bar. It will open a Terminal window. In this window, type this:

resetp

Press the tab key. The partial order you entered will automatically end this:

resetpassword

Press return. Opens a window to reset the password. You do not need to reset a password.

Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD", unless you have given it a different name) if not already selected.

Select your username in the menu option allows you to select the account if not already selected.

Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the reset button.

Select

▹ Restart 

in the menu bar.

  • Why finder hide Documents and office files in the home directory of the user by activating iCloud drive? What about the behavior of Time Machine backup or third-party applications?

I'm under MacOS Sierra. I am connected to my iCloud account. I activated the option Desktop and Documents, but I did NOT activate the option optimize Mac storage, because I wanted to make sure that all my files would be available locally, just in case, I would need to work without an internet connection.

-J' noticed there now a menu iCloud in my sidebar in the Finder, with links to Documents and desktop.

-J' also noticed that Documents is no longer presented in my favorites in my side bar of the Finder.

-This last suggests that files saved in 'Documents' are not saved more on my HD... but only in iCloud, which isn't what I want.

-Then, sailing in the Finder Macintosh HD/users / 'My account' /, I noticed that my Documents and desktop folders are more visible, as if these files are not saved in my home folder most. Which raises the question: where are My Documents and files on my HD, so they are still?

-Using a shell session in the terminal and again navigate to/Users / 'My account' /, I noticed that my Documents and desktop folders are still there. Which suggest that records and records of office reside actually still in my home folder under users, but Finder actually hide it and present them as being stored in iCloud only disc. It's very confusing.

    This raises several questions:

-In the first place, why Apple hide Documents and office files in the directory? Why not view these folders in iCloud and directory?

-Whence the iCloud folder or drive, reside actually on my hard drive?

-What time Machine. Is it still back up my document files and folders?

-What games third-party app mirroring backup of My Documents files and folders? They still work properly? (I use Livedrive backup and Sugarsync for files mirrored across several macs).

-How can I understand that Apple is doing with my folders and files? Some users might be happy with the iCloud drive concept, without worrying about how it works, but I don't take chances, and I want to keep a good understanding about the functioning of my system.

Could someone explain what is exactly happening?

With office and selected Documents, access to these files are now in the iCloud Drive, not in your home folder.

My guess would be that they do not appear in your file because it would be confusing for many people to make them in two places.

If you want in the Favorites, open iCloud Drive and drag them in the sidebar here.

All about iCloud drive has been saved on your Mac. With the exception of the office and the Documents, they are in ~/Library/Mobile Documents. However, if you choose optimized storage, older documents are removed from your Mac. I don't know what is "old".

~/Documents and ~/desktop have new metadata indicating probably Finder does not display them in a Finder window, only in iCloud drive. They are not hidden in one of the normal methods of unix.

I have not tested Time Machine or any other backup program. The folder still exist in your directory home, and they still have all the files, I don't think that changes anything.

Their backup disk was on his last breath so that I had to get a new and Time Machine hangs first various office applications, which I excluded, now it's of iDVD. Running Sierra on a late 2009 iMac. Time Machine works well and updated regularly. However the Time Machine buddy Widget shows all the information. Study using the Console indicates that the TM log entries are to be absent in Syslog. Nothing shows using the "backupd" as a filter on the system log. Under Diagnostics and usage data, I see information for the type of backup and "NOERROR" for completion.

Does anyone know what has changed in the Sierra? Or is it my unit?

This command line also gives information of a TM running 'on the fly', but after the TM copy I have to put in the line of command again TM start-up for a new copy (I can live with that...)

  • Requests for import of Time Machine

My 2011 running on 10.11.6 iMac died on me, could not return to start.

Tried to save start, start of recovery and every method I can find on the Internet...

Fortunately, I have time machine put in place so that all is not lost.

    My questions are:

    1. I have a MacBook Air, but it has not all the apps with my dead iMac. Is it possible to import selected my time machine in the MacBook AI applications? As CS6 Adobe and Microsoft office.

    2. what time machine backup all of my dead iMac? It's basically an exact clone of my machine?

    3. now that my iMac died, how can I clear everything before I have throw?

    Any help will be appreciated.

    Thank you!

    (1) some applications such as high-end you mention install things in every sense and really need to install using good installers.  Unless you need to retrieve all of the Time Machine backup, it is likely, that you miss some critical piece somewhere.

    (2) it is not a clone. There are tools that clone but Time Machine is not a.

    (3) it depends on what is dead and even if he's really dead. Say that it won't boot don't tell us a lot really.  If you really think it's over, you can always enough to erase the disk inside by connecting to a different computer starts. If it will not really same power so the only way to erase the disc is to remove it.  Apple offers recycling facilities, but I'm not clear on the security of their erasure of disks. No doubt they do, but then you agree with someone else.

  • Time Machine backup migration wizard

    Hello

I have a MBP (2012 model) running OSX 10.11.6. The hard drive has encountered an error that I couldn't get (invalid node structure). After spending the better part of a day of troubleshooting, I finally erased the drive and reinstall the OS from the OSX Internet Recovery Mode option. After that I reinstalled OSX version accompanying (Mavericks), I was going to transfer all my files from my USB external time Machine drive. I checked using the Migration Wizard, and I had the opportunity to transfer any of the player. Instead, I thought I'd be better to first upgrade to el capitan (it was on 10.11.6 when it stopped working) and install the programs I use (MS Office) before the transfer, so I went through this process. Now when I try to restore the files using Migration Assistant in el Capitan, he can't seem to find the USB Time Machine backup drive - it retains just turn on "the search for Source...". "on the transfer to this Mac screen information. If I leave the Migration Wizard, the USB key is accessible in the Finder. Don't know what to do at this point, but I really need these files (years of family photos are my biggest concern about losing).

    Thank you

    Mike Camden

OK - I've solved it. For some reason, it wouldn't find the backup disk, Time Machine in the Migration Wizard, when I plugged directly on the port of USB of MBP (although he appeared and is accessible from the Finder); However, on a whim, I plugged into the USB port on my Airport Extreme, connected my MBP to it as a shared resource on the network and is running Migration Wizard again. Migration assistant immediately found and was able to make the Time Machine restore - it took much longer overall than network he would like a USB drive, but I let it run all night, and everything was finished this morning.

  • Where my iBook is stored on the time machine

    Hello

I recently had to install a new copy of OS X El Capitan on my iMac 27 "Office 2010 and I'm unable to locate the file extension which had more than 100 books.  Most of my books were conversions when I went to kindle for iPad and I lose nothing I'd already bought but I cannot locate the library of my iBook anywhere in one of the back-ups in my time machine and I'm worried that I could have lost all.

I tried to go to GO to the FINDER and now OPTION while clicking on LIBRARY, CONTAINERS , ETC. , but could ' t find my books.

Hoping that I'm looking in the wrong place. Any advice would be most useful.

    Hello bkings001,

Thank you for being part of the community of Apple!

If I understand correctly, you are unable to locate your iBook files after the installation of El Capitan.  I am a big reader and would not lose these files.

So you're on the right track.  El Capitan stores files in ~ / Library/Containers/com.apple.BKAgentService/Data/Documents/iBooks/Books.  You should be able to restore these from your Time Machine backup using the usual method.  If you need a refresher on how to restore using Time Machine, check here:

  • Slow down or frozen system when you run Time Machine

My entire system has been slow and I'm getting a lot of beach balls and frozen software/accidents of spinning. It is also slow to wake up and sometimes freezes when I try to log on my user account. I tried a number of things - routine maintenance, looking at activity monitor to see what is using RAM, reinstall MS Office, upgrade to El Capitan and two trips to the Genius Bar-(who showed none of the software or obvious hardware problems). Sort of, I noticed that when I run backup TM, the machine seems to be the slowest. I bought a new backup disk - thinking it was my external HD itself which was not (it is several years old) - but this does not appear to have solved the problem. And the machine ran faster in the Apple Store at home (of course) when my outside was not plugged.

Anyone seen this before? Is it possible to 'clean up' Time Machine in case that is what is at the root of the problem?

The genius of Apple suggested that he could be something corrupted in my user account and not related to TM, but not to delete my account, he had no any solution!

    Thank you

Please post a report etrecehck in this thread for further analysis.

  • Cannot remove old Time Capsule for time Machine destinations

My MacBook Pro moves with me between my home office and the different clients that I visit. At home, Time Machine backs up a volume of Time Machine on my Xserve served to the network by OS X Server. I guess that for the Mac it looks like a Time Capsule, although in my case, it's a RAID 5 with 12 TB of capacity.

I have to manually switch for my Mac starting the backup on the Xserve again.

You can not.  Restore the library on the desktop, open it with Photos, locate the pictures you need to restore, export to desktop, open your library of work, import photos and, finally, to remove the library restored to office.
