  Remove the download directory and then to return to the update sites. to do this, follow these steps:

  1. stop the automatic updates service. to do this, follow these steps:

  a. Click Start, click Run, typeservices.mscand then click ok.

  b. Automatic Updates service right click and then click on stop.

  c. minimize the software component services snap-in.

  2. rename the c:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution directory. to do this, follow these steps:

  a. Click Start, click Run, typecmdand then click ok.

  b. type cd %windir%, and then press ENTER.

  c. type ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SDTemp, and then press enter

  d. type exitand press ENTER.

To show hidden files type Folder Options in the search box above the Start button and select view advanced settings and check that the box "display files and folders" and 'Hide protected operating system files' are not checked. You may need to scroll down to see the second element. You should also make sure that the box before "Hide extensions of known file types" is not checked.
