Can someone suggest an external USB drive that will read and write CD and DVD and is certain to be compatible with my Toshiba?

  Any external USB CD/DVD drive will be compatible with your laptop.

  However, you won't be able to boot from CD (run recovery for example) If you are using an external drive.

  So, your best option would be to replace the internal drive with a Toshiba drive designed for the laptop. Call an ASP and request a quote.
