Transfer the library to new MBP of old MBP with music on an external hard drive

I bought a new MBP a few months ago and have not had time to properly set up immediately. I finally get to it and have met some problems with my iTunes library transfer and re-use of my music files on an existing external drive. I always kept my music files on a separate drive in order to keep the laptop drive as empty as possible for other tasks.

News old MBP:

OS x 10.6.8

iTunes 11.4

Library was on the hard drive of the MBP

Music files were on an external drive, called 'LACIE_MINI '.

New Intel MBP:

10.10.5 OSX

iTunes 12.3.2.35

I copied the old iTunes library to the same location on the new MBP and he watched the iTunes. Load library very well however, even if the LACIE_MINI drive is connected to the laptop, the files cannot be located in iTunes. When looking for the location of the file under 'Get Info', it points to the correct place (file://localhost/Volumes/LACIE MINI/music //) but it won't "find" and play the audio file.

To make things a touch more confusing to me, I bought a WD MyCloud NAS with the intention that she be host store all my files music and video. My goal was to eliminate the need to always have my external plugged in when you work with iTunes. I don't know what is the reliability of this facility would be.

From there, I have a few questions:

1 when your stay with my files on my external and do not use the SIN, how I have it properly locate all the music files?

2. who is the most reliable way to access my music? Through the plugged in external or NAS?

3. should I do to keep my music on my external and load from there or make use of the NAS?

Thank you

K

I copied the old iTunes library to the same location on the new MBP

You copied into the folder full of the record of the music user account from the old Mac to the same location on the new Mac iTunes ?

I noticed that the external drive is named LACIE_MINI on old Mac.  The new Mac, in the path of the song file, he says LACIE MINI with no underscore between the words.  Is it a typing mistake in your post or the real difference?

For your other questions, a directly connected external drive is more reliable and faster, as the location of your iTunes media files.

You can use a backup tool that updates only modified files.  You don't say what kind of computer you use.

ITunes is actively using media on the external hard drive so you can replace it. Simply copy the media to one other player does not have iTunes it use it.  iTunes is probably still using media to your internal drive.

  • What are the advantages and disadvantages of using iCloud drive (or other Cloud services) compared with iTunes game against external hard drive, Solid State etc. to store my songs iTunes, playlists, ratings etc?

First question: what are the advantages and disadvantages of using iCloud drive (or other Cloud services) compared with iTunes Match against Solid State external hard drive etc to store my songs iTunes, playlists, ratings etc?

Please let me know what are the alternatives for storage of my songs, playlists, song etc. other than iTunes game ratings ($ 24.99 / year)?  Is there a way to store all my songs with my song ratings, playlists, etc. with a CD song quality? Most of my (currently 130 GB) songs on my computer are CD quality that I prefer to keep as well as my notes of each song (i.e. 5 * vs. 4 * etc.), playlists, groups (music, classical, popular, country etc.).  What are the advantages and disadvantages to store my iTunes songs while CD quality with my personal notes, reading lists, groupings in the cloud?  ICloud of Apple Drive ($ 2.99 per month or $36 / year for 200 GB) would be the best way to automatically update and maintain my rankings iTunes personal including the future editions of the song etc or using Amazon, IBM, Microsoft etc cloud or an external hard drive SSD would work as well and maybe cheaper?  I currently have my iTunes on a PC of 2007 with vista (I use a 1 8T Western Digital external upward by car for my personal info all over HP, songs, photos etc. which is currently close to 170 GB) but also have an Apple i-phone 6 & I Air cushion.  Although I did not need to have all of my music with all their sides, etc. available on all of my devices at all times as iTunes game, I still would have easy access to information on both my PC and my iPhone or iPad?  Thank you.

    In my opinion?

I back up my data to an external drive for several reasons.  The first is my data - if I put on the cloud, someone else has control over it, they can see what I have and change the preferences to what they see of marketing.

Almost as important as that - if I had to rely on the cloud whenever I wanted to update my playlists on my phone, I need a better internet connection I have now (working at sea).  To get the best out of the cloud, you need a solid link to home, work or mobile.

As a spin-off - I hate the fact that Apple take away a feature in their software updates and then allow an app to be sold in their store to replace this feature - or worse still, some features that were available before the updates are now "cloud only."  And Yes - you have to pay for the cloud.  I like most of the people do not appreciate the 'accomplished fact. "

From the back of the external hard drive ASI downside, is that to be safe, you need to store outside in a separate computer place.  If keep you them together, if one is lost, probably, they are both.  That is to say for me a full backup before you travel, then a new upward as soon as I go home.  Downside is how much data may be lost between the two back ups if I needed to restore.  For me, its worth the risk.  If I was away and say had bought a ton of new music and couldn't go home anytime soon, I can always head to the store and buy a new external drive, they are massively expensive.  Even if my computer has to go for repair and my remote is to halfway around the world - I want to buy a new one.

Now, some will say that once you buy a new external, you spend more than you would on a cloud subscription.  It's true, but in the 6 years following the purchase of Mac that I've only had to buy a new external once - so with a little luck and planning - it works.

I left took well - I am not a subscriber of cloud, nor do I want to be.

  • I get the message of low disk space. I bought a 1 TB external hard drive and I want to know how to see what fills my c drive.

I have a laptop.  I need the computer for class of models. I have the elite external hard drive WD book.  I just want to know how to find out what fills my disk c. I have a lot of pictures.

    Hello

To see what fills your disk space on C:, try this free program:

    http://www.Jam-software.com/treesize_free/

    See you soon.

p.s. Check to you sure it is C: and D: not that you get the message on.

D: drives are normally the recovery Partitions, are 5-15GBs and should not be bothered with except to make recovery disks of.

  • Need to find old e-mail messages on an external hard drive on old laptop

I need to find an email that I sent to my old laptop. I have the hard drive in an external case connected to my new laptop. How can I find my sent emails?

If you use OE, then search for *.dbx.  The files are hidden, so you will need to go to control panel | Folder options | View and uncheck Hide extensions of known file types and select the option to show the hidden files and folders.  You will then need to something, as my DBXpress (www.oehelp.com/DBXpress/) program to extract messages from dbx files.

If you had Vista and use Windows Mail, while messages are stored eml files are individually (see www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx for background).  Similarly, if you use Windows Live Mail, messages are eml files.

If you use Outlook, then search for a pst file.

Otherwise, it would be useful answer your question if you told us what email program you use, as shown in Palcouk.

  • Does not see the utility Airport Airport Extreme or any other device in the House on the network. However, all devices are getting internet.  Backups on external hard drive are going wireless, too. Yosemite day and other software. What should do?

Said Airport utility cannot find extreme AP, which used to be on the network and shows no other devices on the network. But all devices (MBPro, MBAir, iMac, iPod touch, iPad 2 air2) are connected to the internet. Wireless backups on external drives are being completed. El Capitan 10.11.2; Airport Utility 6.3.6. How do "seen it all" again?

    What should do?

All you can do is to try to circumvent some of the bugs crawl into El Capitan.

Given that the AirPort Utility becomes easily confused about what are the devices on the network, it will sometimes help to perform a complete cycle of power on the network. If you want to try it...

Power off all devices on the network, routers, computers, accessories, mobile devices, printers, etc... in any order you want

    Wait a minute

Turn on the modem first and let it run by itself for 2-3 minutes

Then, switch on the device connected to the modem and leaves turn a good minute

Keep power devices one at a time about a minute out until the entire network is back

    Recheck the AirPort Utility

If still no luck, we will have to try some repellent on Mac.

  • Installed XP3 on old VAIO with split C and D hard drives?

Drive C has 12.7 G used with about 1.18 GB free (so far).

    D drive has 41.9 G available.

XP3 is ready to go through automatic updates.   Now I'm cleaning up my C drive and I was wondering...

I'll be able to specify that XPSP3 installed on drive D, or will it be necessary?   It will install where there is room?

  • Media Player 12 losing library when the external hard drive is disconnected.

I have all my music from an external hard drive. If the hard disk is on and I have Windows Media Player 12 to scan the drive, he built the library very well. However, I do like to keep this external hard drive on all the time so I must say Media Player to stop monitoring the disk in order to disconnect and power off. The problem is, the next time I reconnect the drive for music, I open the media player and the library has disappeared. I make sure that the reader always connects with the same drive letter, so it can't be the problem. Is it possible to keep all the information in the library when the hard drive is not connected to the pc. I'm sure that I was able to do this with previous versions of media player.

WMP12 does not store the music files. It stores only the location of the files. If you are using a temporary drive, files disappear when the source goes away. The only solution for this is to put the files on your disk or hard drive connected all the time.

To store your files on your hard drive in a place where the player plays automatically, go to the icon of (i.e.: C:\users\ ) when the folder opens, there is a folder named My Music. It is one of the files that WMP reads.

If you don't have room on your hard drive to store all of the music, you can choose a few favorites or turn the music on your hard drive. You can just leave it to refill whenever you connect the WMP player.

  • Transfer iTunes library to a new external hard drive.

I did a few years back, but as for the double control procedure to ensure I would correctly.

My iTunes music library is stored on an external hard drive. It's almost to capacity, if I want to transfer the files from current music on an external hard drive more.

I don't want to "lose" my preferences iTunes, settings etc that I have playlists, ratings and other data.

I understand that the first thing is physical copy music files to the new external hard drive.

What is the procedure to then "point" to the new hard drive.

    Thank you.

Copy the iTunes folder whole, not only the media, on the external drive, launch iTunes with the Option key, choose this library and keep a backup on a different drive of it.

  • Bought the new computer windows 10, itunes has changed location of support for external hard drive. The music does not appear in itunes.

BOUGHT NEW COMPUTER WINDOWS 10, CHANGED ITUNES MEDIA LOCATION FOR EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE. THE MUSIC DOES NOT APPEAR ON ITUNES.

Changing the iTunes media folder location setting affects only where new additions to your library will be stored.  To use a disk external drive to store your library complete (and assuming that you have access to the original data of the library on an old computer) you must copy the iTunes folder, by default in C:\Users\username\Music, on the external drive - structure library and its records should be like this:

The hold button SHIFT DOWN when you start iTunes and when you see this message:

Click choose a library... then find and select the iTunes Library.itl in iTunes on your external drive folder.

For more information, see user turingtest2 on make a library of portable split.  You must also acquire a 2nd external drive and allows create and maintain a backup your library.

WTF.

    Hello knottywolf,

    ·         Have you tried to copy the files from the external hard drive to the flash drive?

    ·         What are the type of files that can be played by your car stereo?

    ·         After a synchronization of devices, have you tried to copy the tracks instead copy the playlist?

If you are not able to transfer the playlist directly from Media Player, you should try to copy the files to your external hard drive from Windows Explorer and paste them to the USB.

  • How can I move music and photos from my MacBook on an external hard drive, files without deleting the existing NTFS files stored on it?

    Hello.

I am aware that this issue (or different versions of it) will be requested a thousand times before, but after searching on the internet for a solution, I have been unable to find all the information that brings a simple clear answer that is specific to my problem and so thought I would ask the question myself.

I recently bought a Toshiba 1 TB external hard drive to transfer music, photo files and internal document in front of the memory of my old PC running Windows, as well as files, music and photos from my existing MacBook Pro, so I can "release" the memory on the latter.

Transfer files from the old PC proved to be easy; success achieved by simple drag / drop the files to the appropriate location on the external HD icon of Toshiba which appears once I connected to a USB port. It is perhaps worth mentioning that the area of States hard drive has been formatted NTFS for Windows, and so I guess that I would not have expected any problems when transferred to a PC.

Move the files from my MacBook has however proved anything but simple and trying to drag the respective music and photo files and drop them on the HD Toshiba icon (which appears on my desktop once it is plugged), I seem to be affected by the same issues as so much seems to have it before me, in that "forbidden access" / error symbol appears with the cursor , and bounce the files to their original location whenever I try to place them on the Toshiba HD.

I understand that this is due to the HD is formatted in NTFS, and that I would need to reformat the hard drive to move files from my MacBook, which brings me to my questions:-

    (a) how do I do this, and

    (b) can I do this without losing, damage or remove the NTFS files from my old PC, which are already stored on the external hard drive.

If one is able to offer any assistance, in the most simple, easy to follow the description, I would be really grateful!

Never been so thanks in advance!

1 install software such as Paragon NTFS on the Mac and let the reader in its current form or from the Finder, choose utilities go to menu, open disk utility and reformat.

    2. that by putting a copy on another drive. You should do this anyway, in case of failure of this drive.

  • I can't save the file to my external hard drive connected to my wireless router!

I have a wireless router netgear WNDR3700 with 'plug-and-play' feature that allows a home to simply connect your hard drive to your network. I managed it to get up and running, but I encountered some problems when I tried to save files on the disk. The strange thing is that I can copy and paste or move the files to the location that I want to but I can't save it there... I have windows 7 Professional 64-bit installed.

    I thought about it :)

In the folder "My Computer" and under "Network location" I clicked on my external hard drive. Just below the navigation bar, I clicked on 'Map network drive' I entered all the information of location on hard disk and I got another file under "network location". I deleted the old one and used a new one that I could use without any problems until now... hope this makes sense...

  • Historical files does not recognize the external hard drive

Original title: the best backup software in addition to the history of files on Windows 8?

I have a Seagate Free Agent external drive which works fine and I can transfer stuff to him without error, but when I try to use it as my backup for Windows 8 file story... drive it is not recognized. I tried to format it and stuff, but no luck. What backup software I should try instead?

There are a lot of choices.  You could 'rolling' and just create a scheduled task to run the xcopy command, and copy your files changed, replacing the old backups. However, it's messy.  File history gives historic change-of-change of version of the files in place.

You can also use a tool like SyncToy to accomplish the same thing as xcopy, but retains the same limitations (no version control).

I personally just store all my files in OneDrive.  Then they are local on my C: drive, more in the cloud, the more on my other computer, as in my automated backups my external hard drives. I am therefore quite redundant in my backups, even if OneDrive se is not intended as a backup service (but there is no version history / modified files).

Given the predominance of backup as Carbonite and Norton backup services (best practices than those who are 'off-site' and in the cloud, and so they are safer than local backups), I prefer to recommend these first.  But I'm sure that some other users of the forum have some ideas of good backup software too.

  • How to transfer bookmarks to external hard drive

I need to transfer all my favorites from Mozilla Firefox Version 39.0 to a Toshiba external hard drive. Please inform me on the steps. There is no "organize bookmarks" anywhere on the titles of browsers. So I'm a bit lost and I have a few days to accomplish this task.

    See:

Note that "Organize bookmarks" was unused for some time in the version of Firefox.
It is now under "bookmarks > show all bookmarks.
View that all bookmarks is found in the drop-down list of the 'Show your bookmarks' button that is placed next to the star in the Navigation toolbar.
