Trying to vectorize a helping hand with no luck

I'm after a lesson from lynda.com to flash animation.  What I'm trying to do is to vectorize an image.  So I traced it with the online tool.  Then I started to add color.  Everything was good until I'm at the point where I had to put a filling in the color of the hand.  He refused to add color.  If I had of course not all connected lines.  Ive tried everything I can think and have taught other classes I have with no luck.  I can't understand how to get the lines to connect fully. I get as close as possible, and they all look.  I used void selection tool and all points seem to be attached.

I just took a glance at your work. The parts of the outline of the left hand are in three different layers. You will never get it to fill. I entered all the parts of the left hand and copied into a new layer. You have a combination of shapes and drawing objects. This is the central problem. Objects drawn are themselves made up of forms. Draw objects will never accept a fill.

I did this:

1. Select all the pieces of the left hand.

2. create a new layer.

3 cut and paste in place parts of the left hand for the new layer.

4. Select all the pieces in this new layer.

5. Select "Break Apart" in the menu change. This will make each line segment to a shape.

6. Select the paint bucket tool.

7. set the size of the Gap at the bottom of the toolbar for "near large gaps.

8. fill the form, it can take a few fills to fill the entire shape.
