Unable to virtualize a physical PC

I spent 6 hours on this but can't seem to make progress.

Bought a Dell laptop Windows 8.1 with all the trimmings. Updated my VMWare workstation to version 10. Drooled on the possibility of creating a virtual machine from my laptop to the host, but not able to make progress.

  • Turned off the firewall
  • UAC disabled
  • With the help of the identifier of the default administrator

When I try to convert Machine using vCenter Converter Standalone, I can't past the screen system Source - I get an error message "Unable to obtain material information to the computer selected."

I use localhost as the machine... I think authentication happens correctly because if I voluntarily change the password to something incorrect, I get the message "Cannot complete the connection due to an incorrect username or password" instead.

Any thoughts on what I can try next?

What is the version of VMware vCenter Converter? In any case, to 5.5.2 version there is no support for Windows 8.1, check the release notes: VMware vCenter Converter Standalone Release Notes

In any case you can take a look at this article: physical to virtual (P2V) conversion using VMware vCenter Converter Standalone fails with the error: failed to get the hardware information for the selected computer (2059581)

  • How to virtualize a physical server

    Hi all

im just wondering a little the steps involved in virtualize a physical server. (I have an esxi in place). So basically I have a server on the network physically and I would run some test on it (but want to be sure where im planing to virtualize physical and run the test on the virtual server).

    My question is

    1. how to start virtualization... I use Vconverter then bind to Esxi?

    2. after virtualization, since the physical and virtual server will have the same host name - it will be right conflicts?

3 should I remove the physical network? -If Yes... DNS pick will see the virtual as physical?

    Thanks a lot guys

  • Virtualize a physical machine with SAN-attached storage

    Hello

We are looking to virtualize a physical machine in W2k3 with SAN attached storage.  Ideally we would like storage as RDM due to migration, is possible without destroying all the data that is held on this subject?

    TIA

    David

Just use converter for local disks.

Then map your SAN disk to your ESX (masking of storage).

Rescan ESX to see the new LUN (under the storage card).

Finally add the virtual machine to the RDM disk (use virtual mode to use instant VMware).

  • Cannot virtualize my physical machine with Vista 64-bit

    Hello

This is very similar to the previous discussion...

I built a x 64 bit windows vista from my physical laptop system image.  It is a HP Pavilion DV5-1253 CL model.  I have Windows Vista 64-bit installed on it.

But when I try and either build a new x 64 machine, or try to load this x 64 vm, I have done, I get this:

Software virtualization is incompatible with the long mode on this platform. Long mode off. Without the support of the long mode, the virtual machine will not be able to run 64-bit code.

    What is going on?

If it is not supported, what should I do to get Vista running on it?  I don't have the provider's Setup diskettes.  The OS is on the hard drive in a recovery for purposes of recovery partition.  Do I have to buy a 32-bit HP or elsewhere to make this work?

I looked at the BIOS setting and don't see anything about Virtualization or in long mode.

    Scott

I'm afraid there is Word options available since it is a hardware problem. You must either upgrade the current system with a CPU (most BIOS) that supports VT - x or get a new PC.

  • Unable to bridge the physical network in Workstation 7 server

    Hello

Newbie here. I looked through forums here and can see that some people have had issues trying to fill (VMnet0) virtual machines to physical networks. Not sure if someone came up with a definitive answer, so I'll add my scenerio to the mix.

I implemented WMware Workstation 7 on a Windows 7 boot camp partition on my iMac and created a network of 3 Win 2 k 3 servers, a Win 2 k 8 Server, a client Win XP and Win 7 for the test. These are connected to a local network called LAN 1 and resident in an area properly.

I'm trying to set up internet connectivity to network through the first win 2 k 3 server. This server has two network adapters - one on LAN 1 and a bridge to my netgear router. I configured my router to reserve an ip address for the server (192.168.0.5) and manually configure internet/bridge the NIC server with this ip address.

I can't do a ping to the router (192.168.0.1) the Win 2 K 3 server and also my iMac (192.168.0.4) virtual machine. Can also ping the server of my iMac.

I'm limiting my internet on the server tests to see if the machine alone can access the network before I try to configure the other machines to access.

Have seen a few suggestions of uninstall, reinstall the bridge of VMware for the physical network card Protocol, but also to restore the properties by default Virtual Network Editor - I made two suggestions, still unable to connect to the network. Also changed the setting "filled in the ' in the virtual network to the physical network, bridge auto setting map editor.

In the settings of the server vm, the machine has a list of two network cards - a set jumpered to the physical network, the other to connect to LAN1.

Interesting thing is that the original image (vmware machine used as a model) is always set to NAT and is able to connect to the Internet.

Spend about 6 hours to try a variety of ideas and get back on my feet, but I think that everything is as it should.

Is there a bug in Workstation 7 or y at - it a step that I missed?

Any ideas would be most appreciated!

  • Unable to virtualize the host esx Server quadcore AMD Barcelona B3

I have a server with AMD Quad Core CPU Barcelona B3 32 GB of RAM. I installed ESX 4.0 update1 on it successfully. After that, I try to virtualize esx server on this server. I added the new virtual machine with a standard configuration. When I try to boot the cdrom ESX4.0 I get the error message shown in the attachment.

I tried with esx 3.5 and 4. Same mistake.

It seems that your host is in an EVC cluster configured for Opterons third generation.  VCA usurps the guest not to not CPUID settings for a 'lowest common denominator' CPU, which is, unfortunately, a B2.  Try to remove the EVC cluster host.

  • Virtualization of a physical Windows 2003 Server Standard live by Ethernet

I intend to virtualize a Windows Server 2003 server standard of Ethernet based field.

I am currently using the VMware Workstation 10.0.1 and I noticed/hear about the possibility of using "Virtualize a physical machine" to create a testmachine identical to one of my physical servers to clients.

The physical server is running on a network domain, and it is quite critical.

Can confirm them, it is possible to virtualize a Windows 2003 Server?

Is it not possible to virtualize the server for example, live by Ethernet, without disturbing it?

    Best regards, Reynir

Your physical Windows Server 2003 machine is a domain controller or a member server standalone field?

If your server is not a domain controller, you can do a P2V from this machine without stops services, but there are always recommend stop all non Microsoft and no VMware services before starting the conversion, just to be course, there is any alteration of the data and other services like antivirus train killing the process of converter.

  • Covert physical to virtual tool - 32/64

    Hi all

New here. Question about stand-alone to virtualize a physical machine converter tool. It is 32-bit or 64-bit? Or perhaps are older 32-bit versions? Simply, I don't have a 32-bit computer around to try. I also refuse to download and try one at a time... I need to know if I download will work on computers 32-bit or 64-bit only.

  • How to virtualize an environment.

I was invited to attend a sort of small business on its IT infrastructure on a tight budget and have decided to virtualize - wonder if someone here may be able to help with a few questions?

The infrastructure in question is small (< 200 users, 3 DCs x, 1 x e-mail server, a SAN, few servers app - basic systems of maybe 20) and a total mess (backups sloppy and often failing with various solitions, critical applications running on old desktops based on P4 WinXP, pieces of string, box of frogs, etc.). All this needs standardization, travel on reliable and redundant kit.

    This solution seems simple:

    1. buy a reliable (but not expensive - didn't need to be much more if we consider the environment) Server compatible

    2 install ESXi on it

3 make images of each of the physical to use as ESXi virtual machines servers

    4. Turning off every server physical in turn and put the new instance of the virtual machine of it

    5. remove the old physical servers and run everything on the new virtual instances

    6. If you want to take pictures of each of these servers at regular intervals and to have these images saved on a remote server.

    My questions are:

    1. can anyone recommend a cheap (~ £1,000), a reliable server for this project?

    2. ESXi installation is normally trivial, it done a few times before - no questions here.

    3. What is the best way to virtualize a physical box using free software (ideally)? VMConverter?

    4. once the image is created, I can send this to a computer ESXi host computer running vSphere and download on the data store, so I did not really questions.

    5. How can I set up as virtual machines? Simply create a new virtual machine, mount the image of vmconverted, and then start?

    6. This is where I'm stuck, really. What is the best way to create these VMs backup images and these backups can be sent to a remote share (ideally on the SAN) or an external device?

I don't know that these questions had been asked in 1 001 times before, it's a simple project - virtualize a small cluster of servers on ESXi, then have some backup images remotely stored so that if the ESXi server fails, I can retrieve the server images, build another box of ESXi and mount these images on the new server quickly.

I have worked with VM, a little before, but never had to systematically plan and implement a complete solution, so I'd like to know if I forget something obvious.

    All comments would be welcome.

    1. we have been using Dell R415, seems the cheapest decent host that we can find these days.

    3. I always use standalone converter, it works well.  I often suck down some services to operate just fine.  As SQL services ect... ect...

5 simply browse. you the data (configuration, storage) store and do a right-click on the .vmx file and choose Add to inventory.  But in reality Stand Alone works very well on the LAN converter and the virtual machine is usually ready to power.   First thing?  Install the VM tools on it, then you will need to futz with the network settings, some to access lan with the virtual machine.

    6. can't afford a full blown backup solution?   I thnk VCB always works in the latest versions of ESXi.

  • Select the folders before virtualization?

    Hello

When you virtualize a physical machine with 8 Workstation or converter, I have not found an option to select the folder in which data copy to the VM. Virtualize copy all files, even if some would not be useful.  Am I wrong?

    Thank you

    Olivier

... I have not found an option to select the folder in which data copy to the VM...

There is none. The converter converts the whole disks/volumes to the target VM. If you need to do a cleanup, you either do that before the conversion of the machine or virtual machine once the conversion is complete.

  • Copy the physical to virtual servers

    Hello

I'm trying to vrtualizing our server Park.  All domain controllers and file servers are running under two hosts of ESX3.5i.

We also have a member WSUS and AV win2003 server and an intranet server Debian with a lot of other running services.

It would be a lot of work to reinstall these two, and if I remember correctly, I heard about the tools that can "virtualize" a physical server.  I think it was by starting a kind of client CD and connect as a 'customer' to ESX and disk image of the physical machine processed and copied on ESX as a virtual machine.

We got ESX Server 3.5i with our new Dell PowerEdge servers.

    1. the process of 'conversion' above would be possible for us to our win2003 and debian servers?

    2. What is the success rate, and a lot of traps in this process?

    3. do we need to buy more licenses of VMW to convert these two...?

Thank you very much for the comments on this

Simply use VMware converter to convert the machines. No, I converted a Debian machine before, so perhaps someone else could chime in on this. You will have no problem with Windows-based computers.
