Unknown Publisher
Hi, I'm not a very technical person when it comes to computers, but I have a problem when you try to download any software. I have a laptop Toshiba Satellite P300 with software for Windows Vista. I recently bought a new Nokia mobile phone and would like to save the software on my laptop but when I try to download Nokia Software I get this message... Internet Explorer - security warning unknown: Editor
This file has been blocked because it doesn't have a valid digital signature that verifies its publisher
-What this means and how can I fix the problem? I tried General updates to Windows, but this also does not work, disk clean up and turn off any firewall/anti-virus settings.
It comes with Vista, upgrade install and activate Forum.

Impossible to download anything, message from unknown Publisher
whenever I try to download anything, I click on 'run '. It starts to download, through the progress bar, it and then "Unknown Publisher" appears. Click on "Run" and the download stops. I recently installed a regestry clean program "regestry mechinic" and he ran. could it have made my ability to download. If so, is it possible to fix. Thanks for any help that might be out there.
Running a registry cleaner can be very dangerous, and Yes, that could cause problems. You can restore the registry from the backup that you made before using the vacuum cleaner. If you do not have a backup, reinstall Windows.

Impossible to download Vista SP2, "Unknown Publisher".
I have Vista SP1. Could someone help me please? I've been struggling with my phone for 3 weeks now. I restored to factory settings and the first thing tried to manually download SP2 from the Microsoft site. At the end of the download, I get this message:
"The file has been blocked because it doesn't have a valid digital signature." Unknown Publisher
If I save it, and then try to open it by 'Run as administrator', I find myself with ' Data is not valid.
Before you try to download it I updated Windows updates "check updates but let me choose whether to download and install them." There are 1 account, I am the administrator and there is no password set.Open a free support incident.

Once installed the clean, you will have the equivalent of a "new computer" in order to take care of everything on the next page before connecting the machine to the internet or a local network (i.e. other computers) and before using a USB or SD card that is not brand new, or has not been freshly formattedotherwise:

You MUST uninstall the trial for free and download/run the removal tool before installing updates, Windows Service Packs, or updates IE and before installing your new anti-virus application.

If these procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, good reputation and stand-alone computer (that is, not BigBoxStoreUSA or Geek Squad) repair facility.
Good luck!

Windows doesn't let me download an application from my library to the city. It is an application used to download their books. I have Vista Home Premium on my HP Pavilion.
I start the download, the process begins, and then a small dialog box opens saying "Unknown Publisher" and the choice of 'run' or 'Cancel '. I chose 'run', it seems it will continue then a little screen pops up saying "error reading setup initialization file." I "ve never had no problem download at this point.
For the same problem, I tried the following and still no luck:
I've got "pop-up blocker" turned off.
I disabled the "Inprivate filtering",
I turned off my "firewall" temprarilyAny other suggestions for this problem?
Thanks for your help!
Winifred_MHi Winifred_M,
Thanks for posting on the Forum of answers.
If you can provide a link to the application, we can try to recreate the issue.
Otherwise, it is perhaps a question that you should take with the Publisher of the software. However, you can try to use the Windows Installer CleanUp utility:
When you are working on your computer and install a new program, the installation suddenly fails. Now, you're left with a partly installed program. You try to install the program again, but you're unsuccessful. Or, maybe you have problems trying to remove an old program because the installation files are damaged.
Do not worry. Windows Installer CleanUp Utility may be able to help. You can use the utility to remove installation information for programs that were installed by using Windows Installer. Remember that Windows Installer CleanUp Utility does not remove the actual program from your computer. However, it will remove the installation files so that you can start the installation, upgrade, or uninstall on.
Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utilityWe have updated Windows Installer CleanUp Utility. This version of the Windows Installer CleanUp utility works correctly in all versions, 32-bit and 64-bit Microsoft Windows. If you have an earlier version installed on your computer, we recommend that you download and install this latest version.
You must be logged on to Windows with a user account is an administrator on the computer to run Windows Installer CleanUp Utility. For more information about how to install and run Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, see the section "more information".
You can download Windows Install CleanUp Utility starting from Microsoft Download Center:
Download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility package now.

trying to install silverlight but get message unknown Publisher
Unknown Publisher
Hello adeaguiar,
Thanks for posting on the Microsoft answers Forum.
Make sure that you install from the site of Microsoft Silverlight Web listed here.
The latest version of Silverlight is a Silverlight 4 version 4.0.50401.0.There should be a signed version and should install successfully.
If you still have problems you can go on Internet Explorer and change some settings for the unsigned Editor.
Go to IE, tools, internet options. Then click on the Advanced tab uncheck 'Allow the software to install even if the signature is not valid.' and uncheck the "Check for signatures on downloaded software." Then restart IE. Try again to install Silverlight. If it is installed correctly, go back and check you the boxes unchecked and restart IE.Alan that it helps.
Sincerely,
Marilyn

Security certificate is related to the Web site while the editor is linked to a file. Any file you download from any website, including Microsoft will have a Publisher name. You get the message unknown publisher if the Publisher name is not recognized by windows.

UAC - alert "Unknown Publisher" with the programs Microsoft and system settings after FixIt 50202
I had some problems with the list of Windows Update or vacuum . Since a simple reboot did not help in my case, I searched and found FixIt 50202 - "How to reset the Windows Update components?"
I have run the fix as soon as some time ago and it solved the problem. However, the problem came back after a month or two, I decided to run again, this time in (OH!) in aggressive mode.
The problem has been resolved again, but after restart of UAC began to invite for each single action that requires elevation, even those who should fall under the "changes that I do" class. Officially my UAC settings have not changed, and I tried moving them around, restart and so on.
What I get for each single program or setting requiring an elevation is the UAC dialog box asking "do you want to allow the following program from a Unknown Publisher to make changes to this computer?
An example? The services, i.e. services.msc, no dialog as
Program name: mmc.exe
Publisher: unknown
Original file: hard drive on this computer
UAC or my system, lost the ability to recognize the signature of Microsoft? Any tweak registry to fix this?
Oh, I have no restore point before the FixIt...
I think I solved the problem :-)
Among the measures taken by FixIt 50202 there
- Rename the following files to *. BAK: [...] %systemroot%\system32\catroot2
For what I understand, this folder contains the catalogues of security installed on the system, including the signatures of files and com objects and certification info. Rename/delete then was not a choice safe and left me without signatures during most of the windows exectuables.
I tried these files on the Windows 7 DVD, and I could not find them. However, using 7zip I could browse through the archives install.wim on the dvd and extract the contents of the catroot2 directory. Copy this file to the cd did the trick:
C:\Windows\System32\catroot2\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}\catdb
The file has been locked by encryption Services, so I had to stop the service, replace the file and restart the service.
I have still some files that appear as "Unsigned" using sigcheck *, which I suppose were not part of the initial installation. I hope that the problem will be resolved with future updates, but now think are working normally again.
[*] before, almost all the files in my System32 directory were "Unsigned"!
[edit] everything is now done: I copied a few .cat files Windows\WinSxS backup in the catroot\ {f....} directory, and who sets the signing of files last few!
