  Have you tried to manually download each update to Office 2003 that failed with this error code, because it is the current solution for the error 646 for the Office updates.

  23 Dec received automatic update message. I waited until I was ready to disconnect so that my system would automatically install before disconnecting completely.  Overnight updates updated where still there.   Lately, all security updates installation fails to install with error code 80070490 (unknown error). Heard somewhere that it is caused by a corrupted file and can be solved by reinstalling Vista from the desktop... Tried to reinstall Vista connected and choosing to search for upgrades of the Internet. Vista came back and told me I should do a cleaning which I have for obvious reason did not want to install.   The way, considering that KB955044 recommend to do a repair for the problem and that you install we said that a repair installation does not solve the problem, it would be best to do exactly what Support MS tells you to do:

  I have Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 2.  System type 32-bit operating system.  KB976321 will not update.  I have Office home and Student 2007.  Any suggestions?

  Once from time to time, you must manually install the patches.  Have you tried to download and run the patch manually (without using Windows Update)?

  If not, you can download the patch here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=160ad53e-6475-4550-90c2-444e4abea730.  Clickk download and then run.  You must accept the agreement, then click on continue.  After installing, restart Microsoft Update and click find updates.  If all goes well, it will show that you are completely patched.

  If this does not work, try to run the Microsoft OneCare safety scanner.  Sometimes it will solve problems of hidden registry, or can clear the virus that can prevent the installation of the patches: http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/whatsnew.htm. Click full service scan, and then Quick scan (full scan takes a long time to complete). Try the patches.
