Updates M90z/Win7

When I first pulled the top of my M90z, the first thing I did was to let Windows download all updates Windows 7 required. Once I restarted, I lost my wired ethernet connection.  Puzzled, I contacted Lenovo telephone support and the tech I spoke with said that my first mistake was to never let Windows download whatever he wants.  Apparently, a MAP of Win7 driver replaced the M90z NIC driver that caused his failure.

I couldn't get him to tell me what updates have been OK download and those who I have to avoid. Everything he told me, is he looks at the details of each update to determine whether its PC.  I'm not a material teckie, how would the devil I know what that is appropriate or not?

I have been involved with computers since 1981 and this is the first time that I have been informed by a manufacturer of choice and choose which updates to install.  I had an update or two over the years, causing problems, but it wasn't because of the brand/model of PC, I used and finally MS has solved the problem.

Now, I'm totally confused as to how to manage updates. I see that Lenovo has a utility to update, he shot the updates of Windows which are safe to use?  How is the different Lenovo update utility from the Windows Update utility?

I have not installed updates as this happened, which means that Defender is out of date and no Win7 updates have been installed.

I'd love to hear what the official position of Lenovo is on it.  What is everyone doing the updates?

Any input would be appreciated.

Thank you

In my opinion, yes you can take all Lenovo updates and important updates to Windows.

That said, if your system is running to your satisfaction, it is perhaps not necessary to update the drivers of Lenovo - "if it works, don't fix".  Some windows update packages are offered by the Lenovo update system and would certainly recommend take those of before running Winows update which will provide patches of security etc. Personally, I consider it are a must.

Updates is always a delicate subject, because it is known from a update break something else, that you have lived.

  • Audio choppy and distorted on Portege Z930 after update of Win7 for Win8 64

I just wanted to share a tip with you that cost me some time to work, about the sound reproduction of a Portege Z930.

    When I got my new Z930 - 14L, he was running Win7.
I tried everything like you do when you get a new machine and it worked fine - including the audio playback.

When I updated for Win8-64 since the CD that came with the computer, everything still seemed to work very well and I had not changed any driver or Setup.

However, after a few minutes, the linenn of audio playback. It choppy, distorted, interrupted, stuttering and I was shocked.

Oddly enough, as soon as I turned my attention to the computer again, reading was OK again - but no screen saver came and no power saving mode has come in so little time. I knew that this was no hardware problem (because it worked in Win7), it was not a driver problem (because the first 5 minutes, the sound was pristine), he was not a ground loop, (as many have suggested) because it sounds differently.

Thanks to another forum, I discovered that it is actually the combination of Windows Defender, Win8-64 Pro and the audio driver that causes this. If the device is idle for a few minutes, the Defender thinks it's a good idea to use idle time to scan the SSD - causing interference with audio playback. Of course, you cannot simply disable or stop the central antivirus process, that would ruin some the whole point. :-)

_So I installed Kaspersky suite on the machine (which automatically disables the Windows Defender) and the problem disappeared! _ it's probably the only time where the installation of an antivirus suite SOLVES a problem. :-)

BTW, this is not probably limited to this antivirus product, simply play a bit with the Defender.

    Best, Yuppie

  • Error 80072EFE when you run Windows Update on Win7 so wireless

You try to run Windows update on a new laptop from Toshiba with Windows 7 installed and a good wireless connection to a router I get error 80072EFE rather than a list of updates. If I connect directly to the router the updated list comes through fine. I can then unplug the router and download updates more wireless.

Initially I was running tried to reinstall as 32-bit, 64-bit Win7, but made no difference. Tried to update after I just installed Win7 before Norton and other applications on. Contacted Belkin and they gave me a checklist of the router to do, but not better. Someone at - it ideas? The problem is reproducible even with Norton and other installed applications. If you connect the router updates Windows detects the updates to install. If you work with wireless it gets error 80072EFE.

    Phil

If I connect directly to the router the updated list comes through fine.

Until you get your wireless connection problems straightened, run your manually check updates when you are connected to the router.

  • Updated for win7 to win 8. You will have to reinstall MS Office 2010.

    Hi all

I bought my computer dell laptop with win 7 and MS Office 2010.  Later, I upgraded from win7 to win 8.  My system became unstable and I did a refresh of the laptop.  I now need to reinstall MS Office 2010.  I have the activation key, but I have to get the installation files.  My downloads dell has been no help.

Any advice on where to find the installation files?

First of all, do not install Windows 8, if you want stability, install Windows 8.1 with update 1 directly, see here for instructions to make recovery media to date:

  • Impossible to update my Win7 netbook

For several months I have been unable to install the updates for my netbook Win7 Home Premium, which has 4 GB of RAM. Nothing does ever download.  This month it is said there are 7 updates to install, and I left the machine going for 14 hours. He said zero percent but still 'installation'. I ran to the resolution of the problems several times without success. It just says: 'updates online check' what should I do?

  • Windows Update stuck Win7 64 bit

Research of the Internet and the knowledge base, it is clear that it is a very common problem, but still none of the solutions worked for me.

It is a new installation of Windows 7 64-bit, as well as the drivers for the PC that came on its supplied driver CDROM.

Windows Update 'Control upgrade' is "checking for updates... "with the progress bar cheerfully do his thing. And there it remains. Let all night and still no change, just loads of CPU devoured initially by TrustedInstaller, then by a svchost process.

Closing Windows Update leaves the svchost still running at full blast - need to kill the process.

    Tried all sorts of things:

    Disable the firewall.

    Travel.

In the IE options, add domains Windows Update to the Trusted Sites zone.

Reregister the DLLs for Windows Update (actually instructions to do what Microsoft message turned out be specifically for 32 bit - half of them do not save on 64-bit using the provided controls).

    Run Fix - it.

Run the Windows Update troubleshooting tool.

The last was disconcerting because its results were not exactly consistent with everything first in every race, but finally, he moved to an error 0 x 80070005 (access) refused. Yes, I am the administrator.

Using procmon on the loop of the svchost process did not reveal a lot - seems to spend most of his time reading HKCU with every 5th reading fault as follows:

08:22:55.0768690 svchost.exe 3356 RegOpenKey HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\WindowsUpdate DO NAME NOT FOUND desired access: query value

and every so often thrown in for good measure the following:

08:22:51.9656215 svchost.exe 3356 RegOpenKey HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WBEM\CIMOM\RepositoryRestoreInProgress DO NAME NOT FOUND desired access: read

Happy to create a core dump of any process anyone deems useful (although could do with a refresher - does years I used Dr. Watson or any of the other Win32 debugging tools).

Thanks in advance for any help.
