Upgrade from 3.5 to 4.0 - data store?

Hello

In the Update Wizard utility host, after the precheck, I choose a VMFS Datastore for storing my console service! http://communities.VMware.com/docs/ !! But I only see my VMFS shared SAN datastore. I think that it is not a good idea to install the service on SAN VMFS Datastore console.

Have an idea or an explanation?

Tom

Hello.

It is possible, make sure just that storage that houses the supreme court is zoned for only this single ESX host.

"The service console must be installed on a VMFS datastore that resides on the local host drive or on a drive of SAN which is masked and zoned on that particular host only. The data store cannot be shared between hosts. "--p. 41 of the ESX and vCenter Server Installation Guide.

Good luck!

  • How to migrate VM from\TO Raw Device Mapping (RDM) (data store)

    Hi all

I have aske on the migration of VM from\TO Raw Device Mapping (RDM) (data store)?

Thank you all for your support

If you are using vSphere 5, then you can SvMotion the VM attached to a RDM (physical or virtual) with no problems. This means that only RDM mapping file will be moved to another data store without any conversion of changes on the real disc of RDM.

Note: Do not attempt to change the format of disc thin or thick, which would cause the RDM disk converter for virtual disk.

    More info here: http://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/2012/02/migrating-rdms-and-a-question-for-rdm-users.html

If vSphere 4.x is used, hot and then migrate the virtual machine to another store of data will not change the format of the ROW, only mapping file will be moved. This is true for virtual and physical RDM.

However, the cold migrate the virtual machine to another Datatore will change the ROW to virtual disk format.

  • tools to move data from a to another laboratory Manager data store?

do you know if it is 3rd third-party tool to move stuff from a data store to another with the Director of the laboratory?

What you are trying to accomplish, and we can help you if you can explain more details.  But for the Director of laboratory, there is a tool call SSMOVE.exe you will need to contact VMware Support for them to give it to you and its not available for free.  This tool allow you to move data from one storage to another Lab Manager environment.  I don't know if it is what you are looking for or you can watch Storage VMotion, but that applies only to the ESX host.

  • ESXi upgraded via Update Manager can now access data store.

I had an old (Dell Optiplex GX620) office that was running ESXi 3.5 U1 maybe? (It was installed just after the big deal on the closing date set for esxi).  He had a store of data on SATA drive mount, which worked very well.

After updating to the latest version of ESXi through Update Manager, he can no longer see theVM on the data store...

I get a warning that says "VMware ESX Server has no persistent storage", but when I look at the disk in the storage of the configuration tab section, he clearly ShowAs seen a VMFS to 144 GB partition.  When I have the Browse, it seems to show a few newspapers files and nothing else.

Is it possible to return these VM?

They are not critical, but it would be good to know how to save files from a VMFS partition...

    Welcome to the forums.

Same thing happened to me when I updated to ESXi 3.5 U3.

The ICH7 chipset is now supported differently.

You will need to edit the oem.tgz file to include the Intel ICH7.

Here's what I did to solve the problem.

  • Eager to HELP! On the upgrade from ESX3.5 to vSphere4.1

Help! Help! Help! This problem has me stuck for a few days... Thank you all for your kindly help in advance!

I need to upgrade 2 ESX 3.5 server to vSphere4.1, and I've updated vcenter from 2.5 to 4.1. VCenter is installed on one of the virtual machines in ESX3.5 server (let's call this node-A, another node-B ESX Server).

I intend to upgrade the node-B, then move vcenter and Update Manager from node A to node B, and then to upgrade node-A. This process is OK?

    For the upgade process:

I had Manager Update installation on another virtual computer on node A and download the ESX4.1.0.iso of "Host upgrade releases" using the vSphere client. Then I create a new baseline, choose the option to upgrade host base type and select a data store that resides on the local disk on node-B. Fix this reference to the node B, node b, then analyze the updates, result shows that this basic line is non-compliant. I don't know why it is non-compliant, I found not the newspaper.

Any tips on that? Thanks to you all!

The clean-up operation will not proceed if you got under virtual machines on the host you are trying to clean up.

Now, if you have configured mode fully automatic DRS, everything will be done for you (when you start the operation of sanitation, the host is placed in maintenance mode, then all running virtual machines are evacuated to another host). Otherwise, you'd have to all VMs running manually vmotion to another host.

  • ESX 3.5: copy files using the service console from a network share to the esx host data store

    Hello

I wonder. Is there a command that I can run the service console that would allow me to copy a file from a network share on the data store on the esx host?

    Eric

If sharing is a Windows, you can also use smbclient within the service console and ride sharing.

  • Move-VM error: VM must be managed by the same VI servers as the destination data store

I work with 2 ESXi servers and a single vCenter server with vSphere 6.0 Update 1 b; and PowerCLI 6.0 Release 2

I have an a datacenter, cluster, vCenter and a vDS.  I need to pass the vCenter data store to another and get the error message:

"Move-VM VM you are moving should be handled by the same server of VI as the destination container and the data store.

    Code looks like the following:

    $vctObj = to connect-viserver $vctIPaddress

    $esx1Obj = to connect-viserver $esx1IPaddress

    $esx2Obj = to connect-viserver $esx2IPaddress

    $vmObj = get-vm-name $vmname - Server $vctObj

    $destDSobj = get-datastore-name $destDSname

    Move-vm - vm $vmObj Datastore - $destDSobj - 'End' DiskStorageFormat

I can migrate successfully from the virtual machine to vCenter data store through the VI Client, but PowerCLI left me speechless.

  • Extremely high latency during the migration of the local data store to data store shared.

Hi guys I hope you help me. Sorry for my English btw, I'm not native.

    Let's start!

    I have:

    1 vCenter
    1 host
1 Distributed Switch (with a pg for managing network/IPstorage the esxi)
    1 standard switch (empty)
1 FreeNAS to provide iSCSI LUNS
1 Microsoft to provide iSCSI LUNS

When I try to migrate virtual machines between the warehouses of shared data or data shared at local store, all right. The problem has become when I try to migrate virtual machines from the local to the shared data store. All data stores down (all paths down) and back up and I get this error:

"Error caused by the /vmfs/volumes/volumenID/VMDirectory/Disk.vmdk file.

When I try to migrate virtual machines from the local to the FreeNAS iSCSI data store it fails immediately.
When I do the same local Microsoft iSCSI datastore that it takes a time loooooong to migrate the virtual computer, give it to me even all the paths downwards and uplinks down error but not lacking in migration.

I'll give you some screenshots to see the errors.

    Thank you very much!

EDIT: I have extremely high latency notice when I try to migrate from the premises of warehouses of shared data. average 2000ms with peaks of 50,000 (see my response below for more information)

Finally, I found the solution! The problem is that I have been using E1000E vmnic instead of vmxnet3. I have configured an adapter vmxnet3 and boom! 20 ms in all migration!

Thank you to all for help, especially Nick_Andreev !

  • Change of name of data store

    Dear all,

I need to understand if this is possible or not, I have a data store who have a few VM in it, if for some reason any Naming Convention I want to rename the data store, it can be done without disruption of the VM? The confusion here is from VM disk shows that the data store in 'change settings' how this will change if the data store is renamed using vCenter server.

    waiting for response.

    Thank you

You can rename your store data without problems and with the virtual machines running on it, since vSphere using the UUID data store and not the display name.

I've migrated from the virtual machine to a data store to another data store
but the virtual machine present in both store data even after migration successfully
and when I stop the virtual machine, then it shows that in the new data store.

Please tell us what could be the possible reason for the same

    Appreciate your quick response.

    Dear all,

    Finally, I found the solution.

I had stop the virtual machine, replaced by location always store with the virtual machine swap file and restarted the VM.

  • Add virtual machines to a data store while changing the name?

I am trying to create a virtual machine in standby (or more, I do not have a final number) in a second datacenter.  The goal is to have a copy of a group of virtual machines updated once a week as a relief.

I'll use our SAN replication to keep them up-to-date, so once a week, I stop all virtual machines in the data store, remove them from the inventory and remove the data store.  Then on the side of SAN, I'll create a new copy of the data store, then add this data store to vSphere.  We will do a few rounds of network to ensure we have not any change in the network that should be taken in the virtual machine.

The only changes to the virtual machine that needs to be done, are changing the vSwitch is logged in, that I understood, and to rename the virtual machine, either before being added, or when it is added.  Since it is a copy of a virtual machine running, I'm not able to add all virtual machines to the new data store.  I need either change the name of the virtual machine before being added, or when it is added.  All I have to do to change the name is add something like - backup at the end of the name of the virtual machine.

Is it reasonably simple way to do this?  It seems that he was promised that we could do that and now I need to find a way to make it work.

    Thank you

You can search the data for the VMX store you want to register a script like the one you'll find in VMX Raiders revisited.

To change the name of the virtual machine, you will need to replace the line that contains the New - VM cmdlet with something like this

    $newName = $VMXFile.DatastoreFullPath.split('/')[1].Split('.')[0]New-VM -VMFilePath $path -Name ($newName + "-backup") -VMHost $ESXHost -Location $VMFolder -RunAsync

  • Cannot migrate the MRS server to the data store different

Our SRM server is a virtual machine.  I need to pass the different VM SRM to a data store, but when I do a migration, it allows me to choose the data store, but then I get an error

"This unchecked method by ' moref = vm-186.

I stop the MRS server to move?

I had solved it.  I tried to stop the SRM server, but I couldn't move it yet.  I found myself by opening a ticket with VMWare.  They come back with a 2008957 knowledge base article.  Although this article does not reference the same exact error, the workaround solution provided (remove from the VCenter inventory, browse the data store and make a 'add to inventory' on the VMX file) seems to have taken care of the issue

  • Failed cloned VM - flat hard won't delete data store

I tried to clone a virtual machine in vSphere 5.0 that failed because of a "timeout error" and now I am unable to remove the file VM - flat hard of this clone in the store of data target with an error message of "year error occurred while communicating with the remote host.  I need to get this file VM - flat hard removed from free space upwards on this data store.  Any ideas?

    Thank you.

Maybe the file remains locked by the cloning process, have you connected to the ESX console and see if the process still running?

If you can ssh to the server, then you can

    lsof | grep<*filename>

This should give the PID which has the file locked

    Kill

To kill the PID, so you can delete the file

  • After re-installing ESXi data store

    Dear all,

We were using VMWare ESX 3.5 on an experimental basis.

There are 6 hard drives connected to the controller RAID servers. We have created 2 logical drives: 2 drives in RAID 1 and 3 disks + 1 as a spare online in RAID 5. We installed VMware ESX 3.5 on the first logical disk (RAID 1) and after installation added second disc (RAID 5) using the function 'add the data store' in the VMware VI Client as a second data store.

That the trial period is over, we want to remove VMware ESX 3.5 and replace it with VMware ESXi 3.5. We copied all files with files from virtual computer on the second data store.

    My question is this:

What will happen with the second data store when installing ESXi 3.5 on the first logical disk (RAID 1)?

If nothing will happen to the second store of data (RAID 5) during installation, the function 'Add the data store' of the VI Client will allow us to add this data without fomratting store it?

    Thanks in advance,

    Orhan

There is an option in the installation allowing you not to crush the warehouses of VMFS data - so when you start your new server it should already see the existing data store and you should be able to go through it and see the existing data
