UPGRADE FROM VISTA TO WHAT OPERATING SYSTEM?

I probably used my laptop WINDOWS VISTA HOME PREMIUM (Acer 7720) not more than 300 hours. Currently, everything works perfectly (as a Vista); However, I was wondering whether to turn it into LINUX/UBUNTU...? Or just leave it as what (a Vista) and it would still work on YOUTUBE for a few more years at least... (?). Or, should I go ahead and put Windows 10 via the tracks level (and at a cost of about $200-250, according to the technician from the local store). I bought the laptop for around $800 six or seven years ago. Oh, by the way, I like to keep the various ports of the laptop (telephone, S-Video, Ethernet, etc.), mostly because they are not as common on laptops... these days. The ports would not be disrupted during the upgrade...? Thank you in advance for any advice or suggestions.

    Hello WilliamPopat,

If you want to buy an another operating system, you would do better to buy the latest version, i.e., Windows 8.1 it doesn't matter that you don't have a touch screen like Windows 8.1 will work just as well on a desktop PC / laptop normal.

However, before rushing and buying a copy of Windows 8.1, I suggest that you look at this link http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/11885-windows-8-upgrade-assistant-download-run.html the link above shows Windows 8 Upgrade Wizard you can download (free) and allows you to check that your PC is compatible with the latest version of Windows.

According to me, one of my office machines is around 5 or 6 years and Windows 8/8.1 works fine on it.  However, it is best to check your own machine with the wizard upgrade just in case.

Pass Vista (requires a minimum of 2 GB of RAM) and install Windows 7 (just 1 GB of memory for the 32-bit version).  If you buy the "Full" version (not the upgrade version) from Windows 7, you can Dual Boot between XP and Windows 7 (not all XP software will be running in Windows 7 and dual-boot will allow you to continue to use any software that you place a high value on the). The message of PXE boot that you receive when you start your computer has nothing to do with your CD/DVD-Rom drive. Your computer uses a PXE boot method to attempt to load Windows from a location on your network. Since you do not have this configuration, it is safe to ignore it. If it slows down the startup time of your system, contact your manufacturer and ask them for instructions on how to "disable PXE Network Boot of the BIOS.

Where I can download Windows Vista 64-bit operating system that came preinstalled on my computer? I have my (legal) product key. It is a gateway, and they say that they cannot provide me with it. Someone please help.

You say Gateway said that they can not provide you with a Vista disk to reinstall.

Some manufacturers have more available Vista recovery disks.

If this happens, you will have to try this instead:

You can also borrow and use a Microsoft Vista DVD, which contains the files for the different editions of Vista (Home Basic, Home Premium, Business and Ultimate) must be installed. The product key on your computer / Laptop box determines what Edition is installed.

Other manufacturers recovery DVDs are should not be used for this purpose.

And you need to know the version of 'bit' for Vista (what you do), 32-bit and 64-bit Editions come on different DVDs

    Mtn-high hi,

    Welcome to Lenovo Community!

We understood that your request is subject to OS pre-loaded on ThinkPad Edge E431.

If the system is delivered with Windows 7 pre-loaded OS, then the recovery partition will be Windows 7 OS only.

We recommend to create the current operating system reinstallation disk, and after you create the recovery disk, you can move the windows of Windows 7 to Windows 8 OS.

  • How can I do an update instead of a new installation if you are using Windows Anytime Upgrade from Vista Home Premium, Vista Ultimate?

I have a server at home, but one of my main computers cannot remotely access because it is running Vista Home Premium.  As a result, I bought a Pack anytime upgrade to upgrade to Vista Ultimate.
When I ran the installer, it downloaded updates to update and then opens a screen where the options are updated or install fresh.  However, the update option is grayed out and there is a message at the bottom of the screen saying that if I want I must must upgrade to a newer version of Windows.

-Create a higher level permissions at the root of the folder redirection (for example \\servername\mydocredirfolder): grant the Group authenticated users the following permissions and apply it to "this folder only" ALLOW: list folders/read data, reading, reading attributes, read extended attributes, create files / add data

I think the MSI is trying to read the free space on the disk on the server, but it cannot because it tries to access the folder where your my documents redirection is sitting.

    Good luck!

    Hello cdrudd, welcome.

We start back up your data first, if you have a Windows Vista recovery or install CD/DVD, try this:

    1. connect an external drive or flash drive
    2. place the CD of Windows Vista in the status bar, and close
3 boot the disk and choose "repair my computer".
    4 choose "Command Prompt"
    5. type the following command:

    CD c:

    | Come in

    users of CD

    | Come in

    dir

    | Come in

From here, take note of what your user name folder name. Then type...

    copy c:\users\yourusername e:\users

    | Come in

    * ' e' will be the letter of your external device. It could be F, G, H or so now (according to which drive letter was already used)

Once the copy is complete, you can pretty much use the following commands to keep the rest of the data:

copy c:\program files e:\program files -copy everything in the folder program files

You can use the dir command to view the contents of a directory. Then, you can use the cd command to navigate to a directory.

Let us know if you have a copy of your user data backup job. Please let us know if you have any questions.
