Upgrade HD on Portege 3440CT

I have improved my portege 3440 hard disk for a Samsung 40 MB hard disk, and now when I try to install Windows XP, I always get a blue screen saying that it has detected a problem.

Technical information:

I do a new install of a cdrom Freecom external pcmcia card.
I get the blue screen after installation load device files and the message "Setup starts windows" appears in the line at the bottom of the screen.

Device driver issues
You may receive an error message "Stop 0x0000007B" in the following scenarios:
A device driver that your computer boot controller needs is not configured to start during the startup process.
A device driver that needs your computer startup controller is damaged.

The boot volume is corrupted and cannot be initiated by Windows XP. If the file system is corrupted and Windows XP cannot initialize the volume to start during the startup process, move the drive to another computer that is running Windows XP and run the command chkdsk on drive or try to create a parallel installation of Windows XP on the drive (in a separate folder). The Windows XP Setup program checks the integrity of the volume before it copies the files, and it can solve some problems in the process.
You install Windows XP on a mirrored boot partition that was created by Microsoft Windows NT 4.0. Windows XP does not support the Ftdisk of Windows NT 4.0 volume sets. If you are running Microsoft Windows 2000, you must convert all Ftdisk volume sets to dynamic volumes before you upgrade to Windows XP. If you run Windows NT 4.0, break any mirrors and back up the data on tape, RAID5, or extended volume sets before you upgrade to Windows XP. Games Ftdisk may not be available after the upgrade.

    -use the operating system installed?

    get rid of the operating system administrator password:
    -install the drive in another system and run norhdahls supertool > read each line which is given! It is able to check the registry to another hard drive as the boot device.
    -make an installation of xp on another machine, sysprep this installation and change drive hard back
    -install the drive in another system and make it bootable with back, copy the source files for the system of desires and run the installation after you reinstall hard drive to your ct 3440

    Maybe you need a special player to install...

    I just hand over a (damaged) Portege 3440CT without a hard drive. I have no external drives, but I am trying to install an operating system. I can boot in DOS, if I format a hard drive to make it bootable (I used a Toshiba non bootable USB utility or by placing it in a machine DOS from a floppy).

    As I remember for Portege 4010 maximum memory is 1 GB (2 x 512 MB) and no matter if you choose the version high or low density.
    If you need 100% guarantee you choose the version of low density.

    Toshiba offer two different BIOS updates. One is TRAD (must be done with the FDD) and WIN (can be done under WXP or now Vista). For old models of laptops there is no version of WIN.

    Is it possible to place the BIOS on a small hard drive and boot from that?

    As far as I know something like this is not possible and you can check eBay and get the FDD. You can get it for little money. It's really cheap.

    You are very lucky. You re Portege 3440CT are supported for Windows 2000.
    The best way to install the new OS is to use the original recovery CD Toshiba. If you do not have one you need to install all of the individual drivers.

    as far as I know, you can change the brightness of the P3440 with the key Fn and F2! Agic otherwise your settings in the tool!

    If two batteries are as old as the portege, it may be that this batteries are too old!
    Otherwise your electronic of power supply is damaged, but I do not! ;-)

    It s win 98 OS right now, but if I can upgrade the RAM, thinking I m of passage to W2K. No known issues?

    My boss has Portege 3480, it runs W2K without any particular problems. Which is not surprising, as support for W2K even figure in the specifications.

    Outside the memory of 128 MB, I would probably pass in a quick big disk hard modern. You're lucky, 9.5 mm is OK.

    I don't know if you can find the original Kingston KTT-MD100/128 module, however other 3rd third-party modules seem to be always available and are relatively cheap (under $ 100). Shopper.CNET.com, www.pricewatch.com, just type in the name of model of laptop. I wouldn't consider buying 64 MB module.
