  If you have existing question in your system current, then things could get worse if you upgrade simply. My personal choice is always do a clean install of newest version of Mac OS X.

  Provided the specifications of the computer meets Windows XP you can switch from 2000 to XP. If it does not meet the specifications, you may upgrade the computer first or get a new one which is more cheaper today.

  I'm sorry, but you will need a Windows 9 x / ME drive to provide during the XP installation from the XP disc is a version upgrade. There is no way around that. See if you can find a friend with an older operating system disk (not a recovery disk) to support qualification.   Looking for the part number is K09CJ for the controller H310. The cables are 7M80X.

  Now a Word. When upgrading a S110 to a H310, you CANNOT migrate the data intact. You must back up the data and recreate the berries.

  FWIW, the El Capitan applications are no different from Yosemite. In fact, it is easier on resources in some areas. The main thing you need to worry is to make sure the software and equipment to use is compatible. Make sure you have a good backup in case you change your mind and want to downgrade.

  You could try to update your version of distro (Canon) of Firefox but IIRC the version of Ubuntu, you seem to be on 8.04 LTS (Lucid) cannot provide official updates of Firefox (or probably other software such as Open Office/LibreOffice).

  You can switch to a new version of Ubuntu, possibly 12,04 LTS (accurate). I use. Accurate will a newer version of Firefox, which updated the Installer Firefox distribution.
