upgrade to vCenter 4.1 to 5.0 and vDS...

Hi guys

I want to enhance vcenter 4.1 to 5.0... I ealready created a normal vSwitch to manage my vCenter but I would like to know if my VMs who are the 4 different dvportgroups in my main vDS will be down while I update my vCenter?

or I should all move toward normal vSwitch?

Thank you very much

DvSwitch architecture is such that the data plan resides on individual ESX / I host, and all traffic is sent and received through the hosts data plan. The control plan is responsible for managing configuration changes, and resides on the vCenter server.

Therefore, I don't think the upgrade will have an impact on existing virtual machines, but you will not be able to make changes to the same as existing exchanges when the vCenter is out of service.

A few points on a side note,

--> Make sure to spend at least once by the vSphere upgrade guide.

--> Ensure the SSL certificates, vpxd.cfg and vCenter Database backup

--> Please check the ESX / I version that you use on the matrix of VMware interoperaibility. VMware ESX/ESXi 4.1 (without U1 or U2) is not compatible with the 5.0 vCenter and can cause the CMTF:

Good luck with the upgrade

  • View Connection Manager is unable to connect to vCenter after upgrade to vCenter 5.0

Our upgrade to vCenter Server 5.0 went smoothly and that our environment is transferred to ESXi 5.0.   However, since the upgrade our environment view seems not to be connected to vCenter.  If I go to view administrator > Configuration > servers and change the entry for our vCenter Server I get a connection failure message when you click "OK".

I checked that the username and password specified to connect to vCenter administrator mode are correct.

4.6 and earlier versions is not supported and will not work with vSphere 5 (look on the VMware compatibility matrix). I am bitten by this before so I checked that before even thinking about updating to ESXi 5. You need to wait seen 5.0 for compatibility with ESXi 5.

  • upgrade to vCenter on new server

    Hi all

    We currently have:

A: Server vCenter current 5.5 with database on server b.

    Server B: vCenter SQL database

    C: brilliant new server

    We would like to do:

Server: old 5.5 vCenter (not in use, stop)

Server B: Server SQL database vCenter (same database as before, just upgraded to 6)

C: Server vCenter 6.x with the same database on server B as before

So what we want to do is to simply install vCenter 6 on the new server and point it at the existing database during the installation. Can you let us know if it works please? Otherwise what paths are available for us please (installation of 5.5 to the new server, pointing to the existing database, and then in place upgrade to 6 for example).

    See you soon.

    Hello

VCenter installation costs 6 and that it points to a DB vCenter previously used for 5.5 will fail with the error of the incompatibility of data base (daily if with VMware support)

What you need to do is:

Server c: fresh installation of 5.5

Perform an upgrade on the spot of 5.5 to 6.0 using the external DB. The DB is automatically promoted to VC6 compatibility during upgrade on site.

Your order of upgrade look OK and I recommend that you take a look at these KB articles for some best practices:

  • Upgrade to vcenter 5.5 to 6.0

    Hello

I tried to improve windows Vcenter 5.5 with SSO to Vcenter 6.0 with controller platform, but when I ran the installer, only sso-to-platform controller has been upgraded.

In the installer first window was written: "another 5.x products are also detected on this machine but will not be upgraded." After you install the controller platform, all the old 5.5 services have been uninstalled, but when I tried to rerun the installer - I could only to remove controller platform.

In this case, I uninstalled old vcenter earlier and tried to install the new version, I can't do that, cause, I was able to not use of old db vcenter.

Could you give some ideas what is wrong and what is the workaround?

    THX

I solved my problem of last upgrade vcenter 5.5 u2 u3, I have successfully upgraded to vcenter 6.0 u1.

  • The upgrade to vCenter 5 foundation

    Hello, everyone!

I have several questions about upgrading to vCenter 5 foundation:

    (1) is editing Foundation vCenter is frowned upon in vSphere 6?

    (2) If a client vCenter Foundation 5 license and valid SnS, can it move its vCenter server to vCenter 6 Foundation?

    (3) if the customer has vCenter Foundation 5 license and SnS validates that lisenses must purchase for upgrade to vsphere 6?

Please take a look at VMware KB: law Mapping for vSphere and vCenter Server which contains the official answer to your questions.

  • The upgrade to vCenter

I'm about to upgrade our cluster of vSphere ESXi 5 to 5.5, but before I did I wanted to confirm that the upgrade to vCenter there is no downtime for virtual machines hosted.  I don't plan any, but wanted to make sure that no one had met something unexpected.

    Tony

You do not wait to have a downtime of any virtual machines hosted by the upgrade to vCenter.

If you upgraded to v5.0, then you also need to install VMware Single Sign On (SSO), which was introduced to vSphere 5.1.

  • Upgrade to vCenter 5.0 to 5.5 - agent backward compatibility?

I'm moving from 5.0 to 5.5.  As I did this is that I have a VM vCenter standalone.  I cloned it (run sysprep, etc.) and then upgraded the clone to not touch anything we have in production.

When asked to upgrade the agents on the hosts, I chose that I have them will modernize manually at a later date.

So first of all the question, are backward compatible with 5.0 agents?  Or once that I upgrade, only vCenter 5.5 will be able to connect?

What is the best way to return to agent 5.0 if I have problems after upgrading to 5.5 agent?

In my client web vCenter 5.5, I'll try to add the hosts when even just to see if there is a connectivity (understand an error message could say that much) but I don't see a way to add them manually.  It appears when I select hosts, he starts searching for them (and can't find anything that is what I expected).

I want to just make sure that what seems to behave correctly because there is no agent 5.5 host out there.

Thank you much for the help.

vCenter Server 5.5 supports the hosts of version 4.x and later... There is no need restoration agent and you can still run the vCenter Agent pre-upgrade Checker host before upgrading the server vCenter Server.

  • What are the steps to upgrade to vCenter/vSphere Essentials Plus 5.0 to vCenter/vSphere 5.5 Standard?

We currently have VMWare Essentials Plus on 3 hosts, with 2 processors each. We wanted to add 2 more ESX host, so we improved our standard for vCenter/vSphere license to version 5.5. We try to find the best possible route to install 5.5 on the hosts and upgrade the server vCenter Server with our new version of the granting of licenses and software. The best initial step would be to apply the new license in the current framework 5.0 hosts and vCenter server and then upgrade the software 1 by 1? Or apply the new license to our current Server vCenter, pgrade to 5.5 server and then upgrade each host? Our Dell Rep gave me this guide (updated for VMware vSphere, Cloud Computing for companies of all sizes |) United States) and mentioned if we need assistance, contact VMWare.

    Any guidance would be appreciated.

5.0 and 5.5 must use the same keys. Then start by adding the new license key to your vCenter server then you are able to manage more than 3 guests.

Next step would be to update the server vCenter to 5.5 so it can handle actually 5.5 hosts.

Subsequently you would update the hosts.

Host licenses can also be replaced at any time during this process, because they are also specific 5.x version.

Theoretical you could even stay on 5.0 and simply replace licenses if they are not a sort of special license keys.

  • Upgrade to vCenter 5.1.0 to 5.5.0 request admin password!

    Hi all

We rely on the execution of an upgrade soon vcenter 5.1.0 to 5.5.0, a colleague who has already installed 5.1.0 doesn't remember definition the [email protected] SSO etc password.

It is advised that it has been saved as long as its domain account on the domain but is not sure that he set the password. If I'm upgrading the instance of vCenter should I use the same password to vCenter?

We are currently setup as directors of vCenter on our field and can connect to the client vsphere with our creds, my main question is that I would be able to set a new password for the user of [email protected] during the upgrade?

Yes this means you can upgrade now. If you are prompted you can enter the password for admin@system-domain. Yes it will be grey and the only password must be entered.

  • The upgrade to vCenter Server to vCenter Server 5.1 5.1 update 1 when the SQL database is remote and vCenter Server Heartbeat is installed

    Hi guys,.

I'm in the middle of an upgrade to vSphere 5.1 5.1 vSphere update 1. I have vCenter protected by HB and SQL on a separate computer (also protected by HB) I also run Syslog, Update Manager and Proxy authentication on vCenter.

I've successfully upgraded HB on all 4 nodes (2 x vCenter & 2 x SQL) and started the upgrade components on the secondary according to the •vCenter Server Heartbeat 6.5 server and vCenter Update 1 Installation on Windows Server 2008 when the secondary server is virtual (PDF) http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vcenter-server-heartbeat-65-u1-installation-windows-2008-virtual-guide.pdf

    I got to step 3.c

    3. change the primary/active server role:

a launch of the vCenter Server Heartbeat wizard configure server and click the tab of the Machine to change the server role for the current server (primary) to the active State and click Finish.

b using the Service Control Manager, start the Server Heartbeat of VMware vCenter service.

c using the vCenter Server Heartbeat Console, check that all the status icons on the server: summary page are green indicating that the boot process is completed and protected from all the services are started.

d using the Service Control Manager, stop the service Server Heartbeat of VMware vCenter.

As the vCenter service does not start, I'm stuck at this point. As far as I'm concerned, the error is quite logical. I've updated vCenter using the secondary server, and then I'm trying to connect (according to the guide) with another version that breaks down.

If I continue with the services stop and launch the installer SSO, it is trying to perform an uninstall!

Did I miss something in this upgrade?

    Concerning

Hi guys, VMware have finally updated the documentation to reflect the right way forward: https://www.vmware.com/support/pubs/heartbeat_pubs.html U1 6.5 Select from the menu drop-down and you'll see the last date of update for each of the documentation is now 10/10/2013. The guide States now specifically to restore the vCenter database before proceeding with any other measure, this is copied below for convenience: "the upgrade of the main server of the upgrade process further guess upgrading the secondary server completed successfully. Procedure 1 before continuing the upgrade process, perform a restore of the database of vCenter Server, Single Sign-On database, VMware Update Manager database and SSL certificates that were backed up in step 4 on the secondary server. regards Ciaran

    1: Yes

    2: no

    3: no

4: depends on what policies of power you are using.  Since vCenter is going to be offline you won't be able to start and stop machines.  The best thing is to change your feeding strategy for always under tension and ensure that all machines are available during the interview of vCenter.

  • upgrade to vCenter 5.1 went terribly, horribly wrong leads to mystery password

OK, so I work in a test lab.  We have now several 5.1 hosts we use for testing.  We had a vCenter Server 5.0 in place for a little while, but weren't able to manage 5.1 hosts, so I had to upgrade to 5.1.  To make a long story short, upgrade the operating system (Windows Server 2008 R2) left so horribly corrupted through my attempts that we are no longer even reinstall vCenter.  (First complaints of SSO that the machine was not a member of a domain, so he didn't like that I did a domain controller, so I removed AD DS, do a separate VM DC and he joined to a domain, then SQL could no longer work.)  I had to basically stars above on a new virtual machine.

First of all, I have a computer separate virtual (Hyper-V on our storage infrastructure server) as a stand alone DC for the domain of the laboratory.  I have two user accounts, nobody don't account renamed by MS recommend practices, security and administrator which is a restricted domain user account.  The vCenter server is a virtual machine on our host main infrastructure ESXi 5.0 and Windows Server 2008 R2 installed Standard and is a member of the domain of the laboratory.

I've tried installing vCenter server and everything seemed to go OK, but it won't let me connect with any combo of name of user and password.  He said only that the user name or password is incorrect.  I tried the person account, the domain "Administrator" account and the local administrator account.  I also tried the credentials since the beginning of the installation of the SSO (admin/secret password) only to get another response type message "you don't have the permission to connect."

What the devil I'm doing wrong?  I don't understand.  I have been fighting for more than two hours and no fast.  People are already upset by the fact that I could not record the old server vCenter 5.0.  (5.1 and its requirements completely messed up, and the backup is corrupt).  I need to get this stupid thing up as soon as possible.  the boss is a bit upset that I was not able to get it going.  If I get no it will soon, I'll have to get back to 5.0 and leave aside the 5.1 hosts.

I have over 20 years of experience with Windows (3.1 if Win8) and over 7 years of experience with Windows Server (2003 and 2008 R2).  I took the vSphere 5.0 class and had no problems.  I've done several 5.0 vCeneter installs without any problems, but those who were on stand-alone machines.  I can't say with certainty that it is the interaction of the field with 5.1 or changes with 5.1 or bug in 5.1 which cause, or maybe I'm simply not understand what I type in the installation program.

It's weird.  You can take a screenshot of what you see on the admin page?

Also - can you try one of your IDs, you have previously mentioned via the Web Client and see if you are able to connect?  Perhaps one of these IDS is now the SSO admin ID.
