Upgrade to vSphere 5.0 more essential Kit to vSphere 6 same product

Hello

We are State school running vSphere 5 essential Plus Kit with 3 Esxi hosts and 50 virtual machines.

I have the following questions.

1. could we improve this essential kit more vSphere vSphere 5 6 kit essential if yes;

2. must pay an extra fee to upgrade.

3. how smooth is the process of upgrading by using the Update Manager.

4 how long it should take 3 host Esxi and vCenter 5 server to upgrade.

Thank you for taking the time and answering in advance.

Thanks - zang

1. could we improve this essential kit more vSphere vSphere 5 6 kit essential if yes;

Yes, it is possible.

2. must pay an extra fee to upgrade.

If the SnS (Support and subscription) is active, you can upgrade free of charge, see: VMware KB: how to upgrade license keys in my VMware

3. how smooth is the process of upgrading by using the Update Manager.

If you have unused production capacity to accommodate all your virtual machines in only 2 guests, you can do the upgrade without any interruption in your environment.

4 how long it should take 3 host Esxi and vCenter 5 server to upgrade.

It depends, but I think that 4-6 hours is more than enough.

  • Upgrade free version of Essential Kit

    Hello

Can I put my free ESXi installation to vSphere Essential Kit, or what I have to install it again.

    We head to the front.

The answer to this is nice and simple. Apply the license key that will activate paying for features.

You can build your first vCenter Server (if you do not have one) and then apply the keys to vCenter, makes it a little easier if there is more than one host.

  • Replication between two sites with essential Kit more

    Hi all

can anyone confirm that the following scenario is possible?

A basic Kit Plus - replication - another essential Kit Plus
    3 Hosts                                                                      Other 3 Hosts

In other words: is it possible to replicate virtual machines between two sites, each managed by a single essential Kit Plus (outside the bounds of the CV)?

I'm sure that is correct, but I want to be sure.

    Thank you guys!

    Alex

Yes, you can use replication between vCenters thus vSphere. To do that you would like to devices VR is deployed to each vCenter and then connect them. How to do this is described in the VR installation and config and administrative documents.

    BTW, my name is GS.

  • A new doubt on the license - VMware vSphere Essential Kit

    Hi guys,.

I play virtualize physical servers in the company I work (about 10 smaller servers).

To start some tests, I bought a Dell r.620 server with two processors and 64 GB of RAM.

I think buy just one license of VMware vSphere Essential Kit, just to test some features, management, and support provided by VMware.

My doubt is: to support all the RAM (64 GB), I have purchase a license of the vSphere Essential Kit, or I need TWO?

I'm a little confused on how much physical RAM memory on a single server, the vShpere Essential Kit can handle.

OK, I know I can use a free version. But this test server will be transformed into a production server, and that the price of the vSphere Essential Kit is very good, I would buy it and start my test as a test of "production"...

Guys, sorry for my bad English, it is not my mother tongue. =(

    Thanks much for any help.

    Hi Alex,

Since you are doing a test on a single server so a Kit should be good at this point. In addition to Essential Kit do not fully support 64 GB of RAM so no need to buy two. Only the free versions have limits in support of only 32 GB of RAM.

Diagram below will give you a good idea on the different Kits.

Also, you can read about licensing and prices here: http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/products/vsphere/VMware-vSphere-Pricing-Whitepaper.pdf

  • Standard managed via vCenter essential Kit

    Hello

We got 3 ESXi 4.1 cluster host, but the version doesn't matter, because we want to upgrade in the nearly future. The thing is that we also want to expand our infrastructure, lets say with 2 new hosts. This cluster has a kit with a single instance of critical vCenter more essential. If buy us a license for vCenter standard server and a standard for this 2 new host license will be able to manage in a Standard vCenter? (essentially more host kit 3 + host vSphere standard 2 - by vCenter)

I dive with care through all licenses pappers from documentation and white, so I know that essential kits does not exceed 3 host limit, but if I buy the standard for vCenter license will be I be able to manage the two cluster throug or I have to re license old Kit essential cluster?

    I hope his celar enough

    Wojtek

It does not work. Kits only Essentials, you can manage with vCenter Server Standard are the "Retail and Branch Office Kits". In your case, you will need to purchase CPU licenses for all guests. What may be interesting to watch from a cost standpoint, is an upgrade of the Kit Essentials Plus a kit of acceleration (including vCenter Server Standard and 6 licenses processors) and then buy the CPU licenses also required.

  • VCenter and VMWare essential Kits

    Hello

I have 3 ESXI 5.5 servers in place and another 9 servers ESXI 5.5 in a second location. All servers have two processors and 128 GB or less RAM.

Can I buy 4 essential Kits of VMWare and install four separate vcenter instances? Am I allowed to use multiple VMware Essentials Kits in one place?

Is it possible to install one instance of VCenter for all ESXI 5.5 servers 12 with these licenses or do I need to buy a different set of licenses?

    Thank you

Can I buy 4 essential Kits of VMWare and install four separate vcenter instances? Am I allowed to use multiple VMware Essentials Kits in one place?

Unless I'm missing something, you can have how many Kits Essentials desired by site/branch, the limitation is that each vCenter Essentials kit can manage only the 03 (three) hosts.

Is it possible to install one instance of VCenter for all ESXI 5.5 servers 12 with these licenses or do I need to buy a different set of licenses?

No, each Kit Essentials can manage only the 03 (three) VMware ESXi ESX. To manage hosts more 03, you will need the Standard vCenter and vSphere ESXi Standard, Enterprise or Enterprise Plus.

Anyway, there are still other options if you don't want to license more advanced, like Standard vCenter and vSphere, ESXi Standard/Enterprise, see: how your vSphere VMware 5.5 retail and management offices (ROBO) - VMware-Blog of SMB - VMware license items

Please confirm if it takes to change the key of any upgrade of software or installation or license only it will take?

Waiting for the answer. Thank you

Sound just change of license keys. Binaries are all of same for all versions, just the keys toggle features.

  • Upgrade to vSphere 6 perl SDK, SOAP errors

After the successful upgrade of vSphere 6u2, I can no longer run scripts API:

    Results in:

Error creating the VM 'testVM ':

    Fault of details: NoPermissionFault

I updated and tried the last SDK perl as well, the same error.

I have administrator rights on vCenter level, all objects of multiplication.

    Suggestions more than welcome!

    Thank you!

Just an update for those who also have this problem.

Looks for from vmcreate.pl API call requires privileges of grater on object of data than those fixed in vSphere 5.5 Center,.

I have documented more details in my blog. http://www.virtualflow.NET/2016/05/vSphere-6u2-permissions-vs-Perl-SDK-API-calls/

  • Upgrade infrastructure vSphere Essentials Plus 5.0

I need to upgrade an infrastructure of VMware vSphere Essentials Plus 5.0 2 nodes of ESXi 5.0 and Windows server 2008 R2 based vCenter (virtual).

I want to upgrade to vSphere 5.5 U2.

Can I use the standard VMware CD to upgrade the host or vCenter or should I use Essentials more specific CD?

Based on what I saw on KB 2057795 I should update the vCenter first, ESXi nodes later.

Can I upgrade from 5.0 to 5.5 U2 or should I perform any intermediate task?

Is the update process, I need to run described anywhere?

    Concerning

    Marius

Can I use the standard VMware CD to upgrade the host or vCenter or should I use Essentials more specific CD?

There is no difference between the installation media... the same ISO can be used for all editions of vSphere/vCenter.

Based on what I saw on KB 2057795 I should update the vCenter first, ESXi nodes later.

Yes, it is in order, all first the vCenter Server and vSphere ESXi hosts.

Can I upgrade from 5.0 to 5.5 U2 or should I perform any intermediate task?

You can go directly to version 5.5 Update 2, but for vSphere, ESXi hosts don't forget to check the HCL first just to make sure that your host supports version 5.5 Update 2.

Is the update process, I need to run described anywhere?

  • Question about VMware Tools when upgrading of vSphere 5.1 to 5.5

We are the vSphere upgrade 5.1 to 5.5. We have still a few virtual machines with obsolete tools VMware vSphere 4.  There problems upgrade to vSphere 5.5 and then upgrade VMware Tools on those virtual machines to the version 5.5?  Or should we upgrade VMware Tools version 5.1 first before doing the upgrade to vSphere 5.5? We need plan restarting downtime when upgrading to VMware Tools on those virtual machines and would rather not upgrade VMware Tools twice and planning two stops

  • "No connection to the server of VR: does not not." after upgrade to vSphere 5.5

As part of the upgrade to vSphere 5.1 to 5.5 along http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2057795 I've updated vSphere replication to 5.5.0.0 build 1309877. All rehearsals continued well then. I only add the new vCenter replication and it stopped for the old.

After the migration of all VM including device just RV improved another 5.5 ESXi host I upgraded from original host and migrated the back of some VM. I noticed that only this VM is replicated again then. All other zeroes had "no connection to the server VR: does not not." and "Violation of RPO" messages (including RVS). If I migrate the original replication host virtual computer is restored. If I migrate to another connection from host to the server of VR is lost again - no matter what a host running VR.

    Any idea, please?

Yes, it's possible, but I just wanted to rule out any more simple explanations first. I was worried especially when you said the VR server could not ping itself, but perhaps I misinterpreted what you were saying.

In all cases, you can verify if this is your problem by looking for a line like this in the esx.conf of the hosts that you upgraded:

    / NET/vmkernelnic/Child [0001] / tags/4 = 'true '.

If so, remove the line in the esx.conf and restart the host. Then, once the host is back, check that the network adapter assigned to the vmkernel is an accessible IP address.

In my view, that the part "child [0001]" may be different on certain configurations if you do not find the exact line I've specified above, check around the lines part of [another] child.

  • Essential Kit for VMware

    Hello

I have VMware Essential kit, which applies for up to 3 servers or 6 processors. I have a doubt linked here:

Make VMware license key have any physical RAM limitation?

    Another doubt is:

The VMware license key limits 3 servers.

If I'm using vCenter server then, I can't use more than 3 servers under that.

    But,

I use VMware license key on more than 3 individual ESXi servers if, I'm not them including vCenter Server. It is the violation of license key?

    Thank you.

The license warning will be fixed in a patch.   ESXi does not license check against one "Internet Center" service so we can apply the same license for several hosts when not to use vCenter, but you are not legally allowed to do. ""

  • intend to upgrade to vsphere 4.0 and need help

someone has upgraded to vphere 4 again and suggestions or the steps necessary to succeed.  Thanks in advance.

What are the types of hosts will you update? In most cases, you can use VMware Update Manager for ESX4i and vSphere 4.0, because you can't make a room upgrade with vSphere 4.0 CD. If your environment is lower, then 10 hosts, then use Host Update Utility to perform the upgrade, which is fairly easy or install base plug-in and configured VUM and sanitize it massively if you wish and plan accordingly with VMotion feature so that you have no downtime or need to use Storage VMotion, if you need to migrate between stores.

Once you have upgraded your hosts all vSphere 4.0, you have an option to clean the ESX 3.5/Boot and files in directory existing using the 'cleaning-esx3' service console command. If you like not vSphere 4.0 performance for some reasons, you can restore to the State ESX 3.x as well by using the command line "rollback-to-esx3' which will reconfigure your bootloader then you can manually delete the service console vmdk file.

I would start by looking at the guide to documentation how do more efficiently with planning in advance and prepare here http://www.vmware.com/support/pubs/vs_pages/vsp_pubs_esxi40_i_vc40.html

    Steps to follow:

    1 back up your database

2 download the license file and the upgrade to vCenter 4.0 Server and components, point to existing ODBC connection to keep data of perf or clean install.

    3. switch to level the esx host using component VUM

    4. upgrade tools vmware and vmware hardware at level 7

There is a video online of 4 steps casting presented by VMware its pretty good and solid foundation.

    Good luck!
