Upgrade to Windows 8 with the student discount

So I want to update my desktop PC for Windows 8 by using the student discount price, but I have a problem. Can I replace my hard drive soon to something faster and more reliable (most likely a SSD). Without a drive, how can I reinstall Windows 8 on my new HDD (or at all) if I'm downloading online?
