Usage of disk space in my computer is missing (Win7)

Hello

Windows 7 64 bit

Since yesterday, I noticed that space bar (one who is red when the disk is completely full) is missing in "My Computer".  Indeed, for every reader, I can see the icon for the disk, on his right and the name (disk Local (c) for example) and that's all. It seems that if the space reserved for the bar disk usage is (left on the disc icon is free) but can not see anything. If I keep the mouse on the drive of the disk space and free space appear in a

I suspect the windows updates, I made the day before, but I'm not sure.

Any help will be apreciated

Hello

I finally solved the problem by removing the somr registry keys and then he met again today. I decided to fix it permanently.

I have not explored all the possibilitiies, but here's a simple solution: just delete the following key

Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags HKEY_CURRENT_USER

By removing this key you wil lose customization files. This probably isn't a big deal, but you should know.

Now, I don't know if this is specific to my setup I was able to solve the problem by removing only 1 value:

Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags\15\Shell\ HKEY_CURRENT_USER \mode {5C4F28B5-F869-4E84-8E60-F11DB97C5CC7}

Hope help information is the one who has this problem

  • Excessive use of disk space on the computer.

With my machine Win7 with nothing other than the operating system and software support (AV, ZAfirewall, wireless) what's with 32 GB of disk space?

This machine is alive for 3 weeks.

Now my XP machine which is alive for years and has all of its updates as well as tons of other software collected over the years and it is only using 8 gig.

    Why the huge difference?

Oh I agree, it will be never be the same. But it's strange to use 30 + GB on a new installation.

But absolutely.  You cannot buy a different system and wait until it has the same footprint as a predecssor. It's like saying 'My XP uses more space than BACK!', well duh, BACK fits on a floppy :)

Original title : Software updates to XP Pro do take the disk space that can be reclaimed by removing downloaded files?

I want to recover disk space which can have useless files.  Once an update is installed, the downloaded file can be deleted and if so, where they are on my drive?

Please note this is only for Windows XP and is not on Vista or Windows 7

Folders that have uninstall as part of the name (for example $NtUninstallKB282010$ who reside in C:\windows (hidden files) are window Hot difficulty updating folders/files) can be removed safely (providing ever, you wish to uninstall the updates). I recommend you leave these records for a period of at least one month to make sure that the update works correctly.

These updates can be removed individually or together. To learn more about the update/s go on:

NB: XXXXXX = the actual number, not to mention the "Q" or "Ko."

Once you have removed the uninstall folders/files, then go to control panel, add/remove programs. Select the title of the corresponding Windows fix on the folder/file of the patch you just deleted, and select Delete. You will get a Windows error. This is because you deleted the uninstall folder/files. Simply choose OK and the entry will be removed from the Add/Remove Programs list.

    Hello

    ·         What is the brand and model of the computer?

    ·         You have the CD of motherboard drivers that came with the computer? (Not the install disc)

If Windows can't find a driver for your sound card or sound processor, and the device didn't come with a driver, you can look for a driver on the manufacturer's website. Driver updates are often available in the section of the support of these Web sites.

To locate the driver, find the manufacturer and model name or number of your sound card and then visit the Web site of hardware and software vendor contact information . When you find your manufacturer, go to his site and locate and download the latest driver for your sound card.

    Step 1:

Follow the steps in troubleshooting section and check if that helps.

I have trouble finding the disk space used by files and folders individually and when I try to know how much is consumed and free by right click on my computer.  This was easy in XP, but I can't get the answers I need to analyze which uses space, where and how.  What is happening with this?

    Hi NativeLegal Eagle,

Make a right click on my computer will not give the details of available disk space on the computer.

If you want to know the amount of space consumed by a program, then it can be found in the Add/Remove Programs window.

    Original title: Error1711

    Hi all

I apologize in advance if this question has already been asked. I could not find if it has.

I got ill of updates on some installation programs, java, adobe, iTunes. When I try to install the update, I get an error saying that there is not enough disk space. This computer is 1 month with a 1Terabyte HD, running Windows 7 x 64. I have 882 GB of free space.

I feel that it is probably a mistake with the TEMP files, but I am unable to find the location of the file. I ran system restore, CCleaner and disk cleanup all to nothing does not. I don't know why I can't find the C:\Windows\System32\Installer file, but I can't.

If you can help point me in the right direction, I would be very grateful.

    Thanks in advance,

    Hi GoGreen83,

As MVP TaurArain mentioned that the problem is related to the Windows Installer, I suggest you try the following steps:

Step 1: Unregister and then reregister Windows Installer

1 registration of Windows Installer. To do this, click Start, type run, click Run, type msiexec /Unregister in the Open box, and then click OK.

    2. reregister Windows Installer. To do this, click Start, type run, click Run, type msiexec /regserver/regserver in the Open box, and then click OK.

Step 2: Auditor of file system (CFS) scan to fix all of the corrupted system files. To do this, follow the steps mentioned in the link below:

  • (W7) Disk space disappears without reason?

So I noticed weird things with the hard drive, it loses the space without having added anything in it, I tried everything that I saw on various forums, still does not work.

First, someone said I should activate deactivate the disk-based restore points, did, and it is still eating place.

Then I searched more and saw someone who says that I should download 'CCleaner' and it will remove most of the things that are most certainly in space and which are not necessary, did this cleared space, but he eats ALWAYS a space

Also, someone said that I should get 'TreeSize', done this, cleared up a lot of space, but after a while, half of the space that I had deleted was already gone (it's a 6 GB, otherwise a lot for you, then good for you, there is plenty of space for me)

Scanned several times, nothing has been detected

I always desperately trying to stop this, but nothing works and would appreciate any kind of help.

    Hi Max,.

For a better understanding of the issue, let me know if you make recent changes on the computer before this problem?

This problem could occur due to these reasons.

    1. the files.

    2 virus.

Try the steps listed here and see if it helps.

    Method 1:
I suggest you run the System Maintenance troubleshooting and check if it helps.

Open the troubleshooting of System Maintenance Utility

    Method 2:
If the problem persists, I suggest you to run Disk Cleanup to free disk space on the computer.

    Delete files using Disk Cleanup:

Note: Disk Cleanup cleans the files associated with your user account. You can also use Disk Cleanup to clean all the files on your computer.

See the article for more information.

    Optimize Windows performance

    Note:

    1) disk cleanup cleans the files associated with your user account. You can also use Disk Cleanup to clean all the files on your computer.

    2) data files that are infected must be cleaned only by removing the file completely, which means there is a risk of data loss.

  • Someone at - he heard talking about Windows 7 clean install on new discs, taking 63 GB of disk space?

It must be something simple, once figure you it out!  Have had 2 calls assisted support 2 days for a few minutes each.  Guy does not seem to have a clue.

anyway... short as possible...  I built a new computer game. 3 hard drives SSD crucial m4, 1 x 128 GB, 2 x 256GB and 2 TB WD SATA III for storage.

You want to put Windows and Office, Antivirus etc. on the 128GB SSD... all games and programs on the two 256 GB SSD drives.  Requirements, I see it everywhere, including on the box... 20 GB for 64 - Bit.

I did a clean install Windows 7 home 3 times and then switch to Win7 Pro using a card key to upgrade time everything.  Fact a facility with everything configured as it was planned.  Made an installation with only the 128GB drive connected.  The two ways... Windows supports 63 GB of space when you go to 'My computer' and watch the free space.  STILL... If you go on the Windows disc and open and select all folders, files etc... including the hidden files/folders... you get a total of about 25 GB disk!  Exactly as you might expect.

Contacted Microsoft through chat... support person called... He repeated that everything I said I already tried and I even gave the data, figures and results, etc. no help.  Then he had me download an iso file and burn a bootable DVD with Windows 7 Pro on this subject.

Tried and same results.  SO now, I installed Windows 7 Pro 64 bit on 2 different Crucial Solid State Drives and a Western Digital 1 TB SATA drive.

Each installation takes 63 GB of disk space in 'My Computer'.

Each installation... When you navigate to the drive and open and select all the files and click right properties... get you about 25 GB of space occupied by the files.

Run a CHKDSK scan and it will show also the 63 GB or more space used.

Have already removed all the shadow copies, deleted all temporary files, ran CCleaner and got rid of everything. Delete the backups or restore points.  Makes no difference.

I have install Windows and in 'My Computer', it shows that 63 GB is used.  And it is above all of the windows updated hundred occur after installtion.  Nothing else was installed.

Any ideas?  I can put Windows on a 128 GB SSD, which only shows GB total 119 in 'My Computer' in the first instance.  After all the windows updates and virus and MS Office program, it would be complete and have no space to work.

The point is... Windows should only be taking up about 25 GB... May 30 when it is updated and corrected.

    Finally I thought of her.

When windows is installed into hibernation is enabled... No matter what you see in equipment/control panel and power sound/Options/change Plan / change advanced power settings.  Hibernation settings and parameters of sleep can show as disabled in the advanced but you will ALWAYS have a file called "Hiberfil" at the root of the C drive and it will be or has been on my system... 24 GB in size.

You will have to view all the files/folders to view this file.

24 GB windows put side also used space for modes of hibernation / sleep.  24GO of Wasted space!

I have also 32 GB of system memory.  When you install windows by default... it sets the page file/Virtual memory size in the same amount of memory you have installed.  In my case a little more than 32 GB was my page file size.

IF you have windows which takes about 12 GB installation, 1 without updates.

For more, 24GO Hibernation and 32 GB of page file.

So, when you look at 'My Computer' after a clean and no installation update again... Windows takes 12 + 24 + 32 GB = 69 GB... 69GB for a windows installation!  And the hard drive is only considered GB 119.  Once you do all the 'windows updates' installation will be more several GB.

So my 119GB SSD drive will be 75% or more complete just after installing windows.

SOLUTION: To get rid from where to disable Hibernation and recover 24 GB of disk space... go to start > programs > Accessories and right click on command prompt and select "run as Administrator".

This executes the function of the command mode prompt "high command prompt".

Your command prompt window should read as C:\Windows\System32 in mode "high".

If your window to prompt similar to C:\Users\Tony bed... then you are not in high mode.

Type the following in the command prompt window to disable the hibernation: powercfg-h off and press ENTER.

There is a space after the 'g' powercfg and also a space between the '-h' and the word 'off '.

The "Hiberfil" file in your root of C will have now disappeared and wah - Los Angeles... you 24GO more free space on your drive currently.

"#2 SOLUTION: right-click on"My computer"and select properties.  In the window that opens on the left column, click on "Advanced System Settings".  The window that opens will be the "Advanced" tab  Click settings in the performance section of this tab. In the window that opens this time again click the "Advanced" tab  Down under "Virtual memory" click on the "Edit" button to change your virtual memory settings.

In my case, I stopped windows manage the virtual memory and changed the setting from the window of 32 GB virtual memory size, because I have 32 GB of installed system memory... I reduced my virtual memory to 8 GB which is always a huge!

But in doing so, I got another 24 GB of disc space given my size virtual memory 8 GB value.

So now, once you do both of these actions, you can go into 'My computer' and you see that now only have on (my) 20 GB of space is used instead of the original GB 68 to 69 of the space used.

So now I have just to 98 GB of free space on a disk Go 119... with the installation of windows occupying about 20 to 25 GB of space that you want to see normally.

Before... I had about 45 GB of free space (after update).

Auto power OFF after put into hibernation and make sure that you do not have an ungodly amount of virtual memory reserved for the use of windows!

Thanks - I just read that all discussion and it appears the answer is that with the upgrade to 14, you cannot store pictures on the NAS and have correctly work items. Do you know if you can store on AWS or something similar? I saw a reference to be stored on the cloud in this discussion.

A removable disk does not work so I need to have more than one user to access pictures.

Share photos AND catalogs (even having licenses for each user) has never been the purpose of the elements. The nearest way is limited to share a library as well as the catalogue on an external drive, by pluggin JEP alternately to each computer. It is common, when you use a desktop computer and a laptop computer at different times.

Share photos only on the NAS for all users may be obtained using the SIN as a backup copy with software like Synctoy. If other users need not really the Organizer, but he can live with a traditional and hierarchical folder hierarchy, it will work.

  • Why Lightroom uses hard disk space if my catalog is in dropbox?

I am new to Lightroom and love it so far. In addition to some external hard drives backup, I keep all my photos on Dropbox and am currently trying to build my library in Lightroom by importing my photos. Because I'll be editing my photos from multiple computers, I decided to move my Lightroom Catalog to Dropbox as well. This way I can continue to ensure coherence between several machines in my library.

My question, however, is that whenever I have import photos, I seem to be consumes hard disk space on my computer. I'm confused because my photos and catalog are in Dropbox, so this is actually too much space on my hard drive? I just imported approximately 1.63 GB of photos and afterword noticed that 1.46 GB has been written to my hard drive. I know that I am using the correct catalog (also the catalog only I have for Lightroom) because use space has increased after my import on my dropbox catalog file.

I don't know there's a logical reason - as I said, I'm new to Lightroom so always understand the ins and outs. But if someone could help me out here I would appreciate it a lot!

By default copy of Dropbox (and synchronizes forever) all in your remote Dropbox folder on each device that you have connected to your Dropbox account.

1 GB of files in your remote Dropbox folder will also chew up to 1 GB of space on each hard disk attached to the Dropbox account.

The power of the box lies in its timing in order to always have the latest file available on any device connected to your Dropbox account. The compromise is that 5 appliances also each stores its own copy of the same file. Any changes made to any file on any device is synchronized by Dropbox.

You can save space locally by allowing a selective sync in Dropbox and saying Dropbox folders to synchronize and copy it to the local disk and which ignores.

Are you using the selective sync Dropbox?

How to save space on my computer with selective sync? (Dropbox Help Center)

Get a larger drive - car price reached remarkably.

Defrag won't give you any more space - and in fact, you can not defrag if there is less than 15% free space.

You can run Disk Cleanup (start > run > cleanmgr > OK)
You can reduce the size allocated for the restoration of the system to about 1 GB (right click on desktop > properties > system restore > settings)
You can disable hibernation (if you don't use it) (right click on an empty spot on the desktop > properties > screen saver > power > Hibernate)
You can disable the indexing of the drive, which will also speed up your computer a bit (http://lifehacker.com/031440/turn-off-indexing-and-speed-up-windows-xp)
You can reduce the size of your Internet browser cache (depending on the browser that you use)

But none of these answers you will earn really large amounts of space for very long.  The term solution time is a bigger hard drive.

In the meantime, download and run JDiskReport, that will show you graphically what files take up more space.
