USB technology - disconnect all to put software on external HARD drive

It's as much for info regarding aid, because I've never met before.

I bought a disc [described as portable] 500 GB Western Digital external HARD for my old pc Win 7 HPE (the existing external drive is partitioned so that there is not enough place for Windows backup everything, so it really takes a separate drive to get in all about it). The drive is usb 3, but 2-compatible.  In any case, I visited the WD site, to the need and concluded that this player is up-to-date, software-wise, but manufacturers say that all USB devices must be disconnected before applying updates.

It is a little making slam the gob as (a) all devices, including the mouse and keyboard, rely on the usb Sockets; and (b) why unplugging everything?

Because the firmware update routine may try to update the firmware on an incorrect device and make it unusable and unrecoverable.

If you are sure that a device cannot accept an update of the firmware it would be prudent to leave it attached and powered.

If you wwant photos will show up in Lightroom on your external drive, you must (in Lightroom), do a right click on the folder on your internal drive that has photos and select Update folder location. Yes. Find LR catalog file in Edit/settings/general catalogue. Close LR and go to this place. The catalog file is one that ends by .lrcat - move it where you want. Beside the .lrcat file is a subfolder called Previews.lrdata. You can move, but if you don't not LR will generate new insights. Double-click the .lrcat file in her new home and LR will open with this catalogue. Set preferences in more recent catalogue.

  • Regen not install software on external HARD drive

I recently bought a Toshiba external hard drive.
I try to install the software that came with it.
The software is Regen - PushButton Backup.
It seems to load and install ok (via install Wizard). But when I try to run it, I get the message:
REGEN. EXE has encountered a problem and needs to close. We're sorry...

Can someone help resolve this for me? I had 3 attempts and installation/uninstallation.

    @chrismuirhead
Maybe the software has been placed in your first account and starts automatically if you use your account. For most of these software is placed in the registry under RUN or in the startup folder.
You must check the file if the application is placed here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\ account \Start

  • USB 2.0 profits do not recognize the external hard drive: Matsunichi model DM189

I have a HP Pavilion dv4-1125nr, running Vista Home Premium 64 - bit with Service Pack 2. When I plug my: matsunichi dm189 60GB drive external hard - driver has not loaded - poster Device Manager as unknown device USM - works fine under xp sp3

I thought about it. If often, we try to solve the problems of jump to the 'mountain' rather than from the "mole hill" - which means find the obvious solution rather than jumping to some exotic solution.

In this case, I plug the USB cable into the hard drive: Matsunichi then plug it into a USB 2.0 on my XP desktop computer and the hard edge has been recognized and the drivers installed.

Whenever I tried to connect the hard drive: Matsunichi (already connected to the USB cable) to my laptop Vista OS based, nothing worked.

HOWEVER, I tried to plug the USB cable in the Vista OS laptop based FIRST, and then plug it: hard Matsunichi THEN push the USB CABLE, everything has worked. Vista the: Matsunichi has recognized as a USB mass storage device and loaded the driver without problem. GISH.

Logically, since the HDD: Matsunichi pulls its power through the USB 2.0 port, it simply "Boats" on the power and Vista sees the device and load a generic mass storage device driver.

Why does not load Vista as XP but requires the USB cable plugged into a USB 2.0 port 1, who knows.

  • Media Player 12 losing library when the external hard drive is disconnected.

I have all my music from an external hard drive. If the hard disk is on and I have Windows Media Player 12 to scan the drive, he built the library very well. However, I do like to keep this external hard drive on all the time so I must say Media Player to stop monitoring the disk in order to disconnect and power off. The problem is, the next time I reconnect the drive for music, I open the media player and the library has disappeared. I make sure that the reader always connects with the same drive letter, so it can't be the problem. Is it possible to keep all the information in the library when the hard drive is not connected to the pc. I'm sure that I was able to do this with previous versions of media player.

WMP12 does not store the music files. It stores only the location of the files. If you are using a temporary drive, files disappear when the source goes away. The only solution for this is to put the files on your disk or hard drive connected all the time.

To store your files on your hard drive in a place where the player plays automatically, go to the icon of (i.e.: C:\users\ ) when the folder opens, there is a folder named My Music. It is one of the files that WMP reads.

If you don't have room on your hard drive to store all of the music, you can choose a few favorites or turn the music on your hard drive. You can just leave it to refill whenever you connect the WMP player.

  • Application of USB 3.0 external hard drive to be reformatted

I have been using an external 1 TB raid array on my old computer using USB 2.0.  I just bought a new computer with USB 3.0 ports, but, when I plug in my raid array in either of the USB 3.0 two ports, Windows 7 64-bit indicates that the disk must be reformatted.  Fitness is not an option because I have 800 MB of music top and nothing of that size that I can come back up, but clicking on 'Cancel', causes the drive letter to disappear from the list of Windows Explorer.  However, every time that I plug it into one of the USB 2.0 ports of the new computer it works fine - it seems that there is nothing wrong with the device itself.  I checked and it is USB 3.0 compatible and provided with a USB 3.0 cable.

Should an external hard drive that has been used on USB 2.0 really be reformatted before it can be used on USB 3.0?    Any ideas please?  Thanks in advance.

    Hi Anish

Could you please close this thread.  I initially bought the raid array when I got a laptop with a small hard drive.  Now, I have a desktop computer, I decided to take the two drives of 1 TB out of it and put them in computer as additional internal hard drives - one for my music and one to save periodically on.  It worked well.
