Application of USB 3.0 external hard drive to be reformatted

I have been using an external 1 TB raid array on my old computer using USB 2.0.  I just bought a new computer with USB 3.0 ports, but, when I plug in my raid array in either of the USB 3.0 two ports, Windows 7 64-bit indicates that the disk must be reformatted.  Fitness is not an option because I have 800 MB of music top and nothing of that size that I can come back up, but clicking on 'Cancel', causes the drive letter to disappear from the list of Windows Explorer.  However, every time that I plug it into one of the USB 2.0 ports of the new computer it works fine - it seems that there is nothing wrong with the device itself.  I checked and it is USB 3.0 compatible and provided with a USB 3.0 cable.

Should an external hard drive that has been used on USB 2.0 really be reformatted before it can be used on USB 3.0?    Any ideas please?  Thanks in advance.

Hi Anish

Could you please close this thread.  I initially bought the raid array when I got a laptop with a small hard drive.  Now, I have a desktop computer, I decided to take the two drives of 1 TB out of it and put them in computer as additional internal hard drives - one for my music and one to save periodically on.  It worked well.

  • My USB 2.0 does not detect the USB keys or external hard drives

    I attach my USB mouse and it works fine but I can't detect my external hard drive or memory key USB. Why?

    Try plugging a storage drive (external hard drive or USB key) and go to:
    Control Panel-> administration-> computer management tools
    Under, click on storage disk management
    The storage drive appears in the list at the bottom right? If so, can you do a right click on it and select change drive letter and paths, and assign a drive letter.
    It will now appear in desktop and when you plug it in.

    If the drive does not appear in disk management, can you just tell me if it's a USB port specific, that you are having problems or if readers do not appear in one of your USB slots and also if you tried the discs in another system to make sure that they highlighted it?

  • Seagate GoFlex Desk USB 3.0 External Hard Drive is not detected at startup, when you use USB 3.0

    Hey there, I was wondering if someone can help with this. Basically, my works fine external HDD so I boot to windows and then plug it into a USB 3.0, but if I leave it plugged in as I would like and reboot or shutdown and return to the reader don't launch and Windows does not detect it correctly.

    I am on Windows 7 64 bit, have an i5 - 3570 k and a sabertooth z77 mobo. USB drivers are updated, the intel one controller as the asmedia one, the bios is up-to-date, near as I can tell everything is up-to-date, but this hard just don't have it. It doesn't matter what USB 3.0 port it is plugged into you just cannot get starter. You can feed the cycle only and that will do the trick, but I don't want to do every day. If plug you it into a USB 2.0 port, so that it works exactly as it should here is my solution.

    Now, I tried to contact Seagate and they suggested that I update my drivers, even if I told them that I had updated my drivers, which was great. Clearly, they have nothing useful to say. Anyone got any ideas?

    Hello

    Thank you for the update.

  • Cannot start on USB 3.0 external hard drive?

    I have created a startup disk, so much for my new Mac Pro 2013 and finally to put in my old Mac Pro silver tour 2012.

    I did a clean install of El Capitan on an external HD. Nothing else on the subject. The Western Digital 2 TB Green is in a pregnant Sabre, connected to a USB 3.0 hub, which is connected to the new Mac Pro 2013. I tried a couple of different ways to select external HD and boot to it, but I keep priming in Macintosh HD SSD installed in the Mac Pro (2013).

    I was wondering if the problem is the hub. Should the HD be connected directly to the Mac Pro?

    Should the HD be connected directly to the Mac Pro?

    Yes, exactly.

    The reason is that a USB Hub arrives too late to be seen at boot time, so the drive is not available to start from.

    It is also a problem for the use of 'hang up the keys' at startup - beyond the hub keyboard is not visible at startup.

    You should never get too low on your space of hard drive as the OS needs a minimum 10-15 GB of free space at any time to work properly. So, if you do any movie or image/photo, rendering and editing editing works best if you have at least as much vacuum you have temporary files in your project. I can easily raise 100 GB or more temp. files for a one hour film HD, so I keep a lot of empty hard disk space.

    In order to get a few things on your hard drive, the usual space hoggers are therefore, movies, photos, etc. You can move all those who in their library on an external hard drive, and after having checked they are working, delete them from your hard drive.

    Generally, the application work better if they are installed on your internal hard drive; I'm not a gamer, so I'm not familiar with the specifics of the game you're talking about. Primarily for backup purposes, I have connected via USB, a new external hard drive to my Compaq Presario (using Windows 7) but I don't see how to access or use. Removal and replacement of the plug USB produce noise sound from the PC that I expect.  Start/computer shows no signs of the element. • Windows 7 Pro Backup can not see my USB external hard drive.

    This seems to be an old problem, maybe someone has a solution:

    I have a Toshiba 150 GB NTFS USB 2.0 external hard drive I used as backup when I had XP, but now I have W7 Pro 64-bit (SP1), and the backup program is unable to see the player.

    It shows in Explorer, it works very well, has write permission, but is not in the list of Backup Options.

    Player is 18 months old. W7 found and installed the USB driver for it.

    It is wired, I don't have a network.

    In addition, Windows cannot format the drive.

    I changed the drive letter of that W7, named F to Z, no go.  All I see in the backup is C and the DVD player.

    It has been suggested that I have uninstall all the drivers USB and reboot and let Windows reload them, but I have a keyboard and a mouse USB, so if I do that has no way to control the computer.

    How can I make the visible external drive for the backup program? Any help is appreciated.

    I use Ghost on my 8 month, Toshiba Satellite L755 and have never seen a conflict.  I also have it on 3 desktop computers.  For antivirus I use AVG free on 3 systems, Symantec SEP on that and Norton Security Suite on the laptop (which I get for free from Comcast).  The only thing related to security, I see in the menu start from Ghost 15 is a small window to give people access to Ghost.  He also built in the feature called Threatcon, which I've never had any message of.  Here's the info of the construction in the help.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    On Symantec ThreatCon
    ThreatCon is threat of Symantec early warning security system. When Symantec identifies various threats, the ThreatCon team adjusts the level of threat. This adjustment gives people and adequate warning systems to protect against attacks and data systems.
    When you activate the trigger of Symantec ThreatCon to a selected backup job, Norton Ghost detects changes in the threat level. Your computer must be connected to the Internet, at the time. If the ThreatCon level is reached or exceeded, the backup operation in which you have enabled Symantec ThreatCon is started automatically. You have then a recovery point to use to recover your data to your computer should become affected by the latest threat.
    Note:
    If your computer is not online, then it is not sensitive to online threats. But if you connect your computer to the Internet at any time, it becomes vulnerable. You don't have to enable or Disable Symantec ThreatCon when you go on or off line. Works if you're online, it doesn't matter if you're offline.
  • Satellite 2450 (XP) does not recognize my external hard drive
    I recently purchased a Hitachi USB 2.0 external hard drive. When I plug it into my computer (from Toshiba Satellite with Windows XP) it 'Bing' to let me know its been recognized and appears in the options of 'Remove hardware safely', but not in 'my computer '.
    I looked on other sites to help tech & they suggested to go to him & records management assigning a drive letter, but I can't do because it does not appear in disk management. It appears in Device Manager, disk & it says that the camera seems to work fine.
    don't really know what to do! Help!
    Have all the latest windows/microsoft updates/Service packs etc...
    works fine on another PC and we tried to disconnect/reconnect (there is no external power supply required)
    through directly to the laptop via a usb cable
    Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated!
    It's very strange. I use two external hard drives connected to the USB ports and two of them are recognized correctly. I checked it with my old 1900 satellite also.
    I put t really know what can be the problem. The HARD drive is connected with two USB cables (as in my case)?
    Try to remove the USB ports on the Device Manager, restart the device and plug it in again. For me, it is known that HARD drive is not recognized correctly when the HARD drive is removed without using Safely Remove Hardware and reconnected. Also try different USB ports on your device.
    As I understand your unit As USB2.0 ports and I really don t know why this happen. If there is no possibility try to check some other external HARD disk. It will be interesting to know if it's some kind of common problem or individual cases.
    Any ideas on how I can solve these problems?
    Hi Zehn,
    Yes, I tried a cable in there, but the power supply doesn't seem to be the issue.
    I COULD have solved the problem. I found the disc in my device manager and it has been disabled. I tried to activate the device, but I got an error code 22, and I needed to remove the device. When I plugged it in the drivers have been reinstalled, and it seems to be good for now.
    Thanks for the suggestion!
  • External hard drive creates folders and files and lose the music I synced to it.
    I've been struggling with my 8 GB Clip +, which is the same thing my old 4 GB Clip + has. It creates files SID and incorporate in the album folders. Renamed it with records of the characters of 8 or 9 (alpha and digital) at the beginning of the file name, and some of the music I download does not exist when I disconnect the player and it refreshes. It does this for MP3 AND WMA files, if I use Media Player or Windows Explorer.
    I loaded all my WMA files on the internal hard disk (that works absolutely perfect), responsible for MP3s ONLY on the external hard drive and got the same result. The external hard drive has been reformatted, there is no debris of what anyone to spoil things. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you!
    So after spending most of my Sunday with my 8 GB Clip + and its 8GB external drive, I found that the problems mentioned previously disappear if opt you for USB mode MSC. I was then able to transfer MP3 and WMA using Windows Media Player or Windows Explorer. I even got to explore open and hung out and deposited the files in window Media Player sync. Very Cool! Also, when I tried to copy something that she already had, he said that the case was already transferred. Amazing! In the past, it should continue to record the same.
    Although I must say that a WMA file problem: some of the music files were not correctly identified and is not 'stick' to the albums they came from. But a search for individual songs revealed they were always there, even if the Sansa could not "identify the album they belong to.
    I hope this helps others. At the end of the day, my advice is: If you have an external drive, the USB MSC mode, and you won't have any major problems - just a few small, boring ones.
    And thanks for the two of you who responded to my original post. Yes, the player has been on auto-detection mode - not good.
    Hi @db69613,
    Welcome to the HP forums! It's a great way to engage, ask questions and find resolutions by working with specialists from the community of HP. I understand that you need assistance with your desktop computer HARD drive that is connected to your laptop via the USB port. I'll be happy to help you with this.
    I'm just surprised at the levels of technical knowledge and technical skills that your possession. Hats off to you for this. It was very clever of you! It has been a privilege to have shared this platform with you and work with you.
    First of all, programs of a different version or windows session will not work on another computer as it was installed on the computer of origin at this time. It is an installation and application software, to the difference of the data or information that is accessible by any computer when the hard drive is connected. It is because no software installation binds the application of this specific operating system installed on this specific to the time machine.
    If the computer does not and the hard drive is accessible, all the content (such as music, photos, videos, and other information are accessible), but the programs have been installed originally are not available and will not work on any other computer when it is connected to the outside.
    However, if the hard drive works fine, windows is correctly installed, then the same hard disk can be installed on another PC of office and some of the programs should work ideally.
    I hope this helps! Please let me know how it goes. I really hope that the issue is fixed without hassle.
