USB to Serial Port Adapter

Hi, my laptop is not a serial port.

If I want to connect to some hardware using RS-232, RS-485, CANBUS etc, will I have problems using a serial USB adapter?

When I was programming PIC microcontrollers, we were told not to use adapters to program the PIC. I found this a little confusing because the signal from the adapter must be identical to what would come of a serial port. I don't know what is the reason.

Are there any known issues using a serial USB with hardware adapter (specifically the sbRIO-9651 reference carrier I use and also just in general) or I would be fine to use it?

I have a box of NI USB - 232 which will stop working.  Not sure if it's a loop of mass or something with signals through it, but... Yes, they didn't last real long in my experience.  (It was years ago, I sent a bunch of back, don't know if improvements have been made since that time.)

IOGear GUC-232 has and from SILabs CP2102/MAX3232 work well for me. never had a problem with those.  Anything FTDI is solid, beware fake chips with this manufacturer.

7Fh has a HID-UART chip available (CP2110), which works well on machines that have restricted permissions for driver installation.

I am trying to install drivers for a USB cable to serial port on a HP Pavilion dv7 laptop (Windows 7) - I go through the download and when I plug the cable of the toolbar displays a sequence of installation but then an error of installation failed. I tried all sorts of updates and Windows says that it cannot verify the signature of the device.

Would have been nice to know exactly what you had already tried :-)

I do not know what adapter you are using, but I have a Trendnet TU-S9 that I use to connect my OBDII code reader to my PC, so I can save the CEL errors that I receive on different vehicles. I thought I had the drivers for it installed, but I have not (could not even find on a HARD drive). But I plugged it in just to see what happened. The message was that no local driver could be found, I wanted to try Windows Update? I said yes, and installed a "Prolific USB - to - Serial Comm Port (COM3)". Plugged the code reader, started the PC-Link software and here!, everything was good.

You could try to uninstall anything that you have already installed, restart, then connect the adapter and see if you have the same success. I use Win7 HP x 86, but Vista should at least try to do the same thing, and who knows, it might work :-)

  • How to access a host USB Virtual Serial Port from a VM Application?

I have a Linux VM running under VMware Player 5.0.2 on a Linux host machine.   I have a development system running on the computer, virtual trying to download the code on an external device connected via a virtual serial port USB host (ttyACM0).   Anyone doing programming Arduino device will be familiar with my software/hardware config.  Dev VM system does not directly hear the ttyACM0 port I need to establish some sort of connection bridge between "ttyACM0" host port and the port of VM-configured "ttySx"?   Someone did something like this with a VM Player?

FYI, I found the answer to my own question in an old post on a similar topic. Here's a response provided by the user 'Worker' in the former post office that was the solution to my problem.  I followed its general approach and mounted my own virtual *.vmx machine configuration file to change the serial port set of ' / dev/ttyS1 "to" / dev/ttyACM0 ' I can now download code on my device directly from the Arduino IDE running on the guest VM system.

A bit of an old thread here, but I wanted to say that I was able to do exactly this yesterday using VMware Server 2.

It wasn't easy, but I managed to hack in there.  I guess that this trick works also on VM WS but I have not yet tested.

    Here are the steps:

    Start your VM turned off.

Add a serial port of your virtual machine through the normal interface. -J' I just let it use/dev/ttyS0.

Go to your virtual machine folder and edit the .vmx config file.

    Find the line:

    Serial0.filename = ' / dev/ttyS0 ".

    Replace:

    Serial0.filename = "/ dev/ttyUSB0 '.

and off you go.  The guest operating system sees it as a real physical serial port and is fortunately out my system through series console!

    Hope that helps other people.

  • USB to Serial Port - Code 1, the driver Installation

I have problems to install a USB driver for a USB Serial Port. In the divece Manager (Serial Port (COM & LPT) CODE of ERROR 1) appears an exclamation point and there is an option to reinstall the driver, but windows is unable to complete the installation. Please, help, thank you

In Device Manager, delete all references to this port (remove entries) so it's as if the port did not even exist.

Then click on start / Control Panel / Add Hardware and have it look for new hardware devices.  If all goes well it will go to the Port and ask drivers.  If it is not, select the option to find the device, and then select USB Serial Port (or which option he plans that comes closest).  Follow the procedures.  Try to install the drivers now that Device Manager is clean and if all goes well they will now install and you're ready to go.

    I hope this helps.

    Good luck!

    Hi Androman,

First of all I suggest you to check if the Oregon Scientific WMR968 is compatible with windows 7 or not.

Check out the link given below to the windows Compatibility Center 7.
    http://www.Microsoft.com/Windows/compatibility/Windows-7/en-us/default.aspx

If it is not compatible with Windows 7, then install the drivers in XP sp2 compatibility mode and also to contact the manufacturer for drivers that are updated that are compatible with windows 7.

Select the option for windows XP sp2 and install the drivers.

  • Agreement between MAX and Windows serial port.

I use a laptop running Windows XP and LabView 8.5.  I have a variety of USB to serial port devices that I use from time to time.  In the past (from what I remember), has accepted the name assigned by Windows, and MAX (COM1, COM2, etc.).  Recently however, MAX seems to think there are three serial ports on the computer, but the tags with a little black 'x' by saying that the device is in a State of 'unknown '.  Using the Windows Control Panel, I see that no serial port is listed in the system until I have Plug one of the converters in.  When the converter is connected Windows automatically recognizes and says it works normally.  It seems that MAX does not allow me to delete the serial ports that scored because they did not add statically.

Is there a way to clear the MAX?  This has not caused any problem I was not able to get around yet, but it should be clarified.

    Thank you.

  • Lack of Z - 400 serial port

    Hello

    I have a number of product Z-400 SG637UC #ABA

Just updated to the latest version of the BIOS, was 1.17, I think.

Manual maintenance and each user's guide I can find a reference to the serial port header (15-pin) construction which

    My motherboard has.

However, I can't understand how to turn it on.  The security settings of the Bios do not list the serial port, and the Advanced Settings tab lists only the floppy drive and not the serial port.

Are the parties other than the header not installed on the motherboard on this particular product number?

Do not connect the pins of the rider 2 header and tell the BIOS the material is there?

PIN 12 of the 15-pin header is labeled 'detect the com' on page 168 of the Z-400 maintenance manual.  I do not think it is a standard pins for communications series name.  Is it being stretched up or down to activate the port?

I don't particularly want to spend money for the "2nd serial" material, when the first serial port is not working.

    Thanks for any help.

    PM

    AP_M,

The Z400 has a 2 x 8 serial port header, you have found.  To access the serial port, one needs the HP, the PA716A Option kit serial port adapter.  This kit, described here, has a small PCB attached to a PCI card and cable to the PCB of the card mother Z400.  This PCB contains the RS232 serial port transceiver integrated circuit, so it is necessary to make the serial port work - a straight through cable from the motherboard to a will of connector serial port not working, to not try.

Option kit that pa716a can be ordered as an option Z420.  The kit is not listed for the Z400, but the Z400 (and many other HP computers) use the same kit.

    To answer your technical questions:

-IIRC, Windows requires masking devices that are not accessible.  That's why the serial port does not appear in the device without this option installed kit Manager.

-12 axis, as you can imagine, is a "detect the com' which tells the system that the serial port kit is installed.  He is shot down (the Earth) when the cable attached to the motherboard.

-If you want to experiment and see if the serial port becomes active, turn off the Z400, then put a jumper between the P52 12 serial port connector pin and ground.  Soil is on pins 8 and 7.  (The pins are numbered with strange pins on one side (row) and evens on the other kind of pin 2 pin 1 opposite.)  To determine which line is even or odd, pin 16 is the last pin and the missing key on the 'same' line).

Then turn on the system.  After the Earth axis 12, the serial port should appear in the BIOS settings and certainly in the windows.

    * I think this is how it works, I have tried for a long time. **

    Does that answer your questions?

  • xw6600 Workstation - Serial Port problems

I want to add a standard RS232 9 pins (serial) port on my HP xw6600 workstation.

Due to the current expansion I have only x 8 PCIe and PCIe x 16 available on the motherboard slots.

I tried two dedicated PCIe Searial maps (PX-235 BrainBoxes and SatrTech BY - 1 S 552) and caused both the PC go into a continuous re-start cycle, i.e. the PC through the BIOS and rebooting itself before loading the operating system.  I tried to disable the interface Serial Port built into the BIOS, but it made no difference and cars (s) should be removed.

I noticed that the motherboard has an onbard Serial Port adapter, but I don't know what hardware is required to present this port at the rear of the workstation (cable and plate back I guess), or even if it can be used for this purpose.

If someone added a serial port to the device, I'd be interested to know how they did it.

    Thank you.

That's what you're looking for. It is a connector standard seial that connects to the head set to edge out motherboard to an empty slot on the back of your pc. There are many on the market. You should be able to find a room for @ $6-8, 00 USD to any electronic parts store. If you activate the serial port in the BIOS, coupled with the installation of a configuration like this, you should have what you are looking for.

  • The port adapter driver prolific PL2303 USB-to-Serial fails to install

I am installing a cable adapter USB - to - Serial-PL2303 prolific port 1 '. This is done by cutting. It seems that many people have not all the problems, and they have XP, Vista and Win7 drivers available for it. I downloaded the latest installer for the Vista driver from the prolific website (http://www.prolific.com.tw/eng/downloads.asp?ID=31, 02/12/2009). The driver said that he installed. I then perform a restart. After the system is installed, I plugged the cable. Windows detects I inserted the USB key and displays the dialog box drivers you are looking for. Weird, I thought. I click to observe the Statute and it ends with the message:

"USB prolific to serial comm port (COM4) - failed".

In Device Manager, it shows an exclamation mark next to it. If it's a Vista driver, why it fails? What can I do to get this install?

I also have another Vista machine I tried on, just to see if it was this machine or what. She doesn't have too!

    Thank you

Thanks for the quick response. I was not the installation as the link "Run as Admin" as a first step, even if my account has administrator rights. But yes, so I started to do this, no change.

However, I am happy to say that I found the problem! After the announcement, I did a search in these forums and came across another post that had a lot of comments... someone in whom we posted a link to the drivers that I had not tried. The thread is here: http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistahardware/thread/a366f74b-9853-4cae-95c3-4249172951da .

Drivers Vista cooldrives (http://www.cooldrives.com/wividrforprc.html) did the trick! I have no idea of the lineage of this package, but they worked. And they worked when those on the supplied CD didn't; When those on the site Web of the card does not, and when those prolific site does not.

  • virtual serial port? Vista 64-bit, usb, palm 755 p verizon dongle

I have a new Vista 64 bit operating system and I'm having problems that everyone else is still.  Can't hotsync using the cable.  I bought the dongle bluetooth (Kensington) that many have said works.  My phone recognizes the PC.  My instructions on the phone that warm using bluetooth synchronization tells me to set up a virtual serial port.  The instructions are not very clear.  This is where it falls apart for me.  Can someone explain how to configure this virtual serial port?  Thank you.

Well, I'm pleased to announce a successful solution.  On the recommendation of some other son that I left and piece and ioGear GBU321 Bluetooth USB key and Setup was a snap and it works (although SLOOOWLY compared to a connection cable, a while and plug your treo during your first sync).

To setup you do the following (and this can also work for your Kensington):

    • Insert the driver CD
    • Insert the dongle when asked.
    • Install the drivers
    • Pair your device.  Basically, go to the configuration Bluetooth on the Palm screen and select "Trusted Devices".  You will find the bluetooth adapter, select it, and then the Palm or PC will provide or ask a pairing code.  The instructions will guide you through, but basically, you'll want to make sure that the same numbers are registered on both screens (this prevents you from accidentally pairing with some random near the computer)
    • This will actually set up your virtual port for you.
    • You can go to the hotsync Manager and click on "serial" and select the port created in the pairing process.
    • If you don't know which port has been created "Control Panels" and select "Phone and Modem" (assuming that you are in "Classic view").
    • Click on the modem tag and you will see something like 'Standard Modem over Bluetooth link' and next to that it will be the assigned port.

I hope this helps.  I know that I was relieved not to have to trash my Palm or my PC (although when the Pre or iPhone with a physical keyboard comes out all bets are open)
