Used storage vs. storage provisioned

I have two ESXi 4 host configuration and all hosts show put storage in service much higher that what I set up makes them that shows that storage used.  Some of them are almost twice their original size.  What causes this?  I've migrated some virtual machines but do not have much beyond that.  Anyone have any ideas?  This one below I have actually created as 40 GB migrated he not do anything else to install a small proceed to take a snapshot.

This is because with a snapshot, you actually fund the amount double space on the virtual computer. The snapshot delta file can reach the same size of the original hard drive (in the worst case if the virtual machine is very IO-active and you delete snapshots soon). In addition, ESX uses a swap file for each virtual computer with the size of the RAM allocated to the VM (if you use no reservations), in which case the physical RAM is scarce (overcommitment of memory).

The value displayed as "put into service" is correct. If you size and expand your storage for what you put in service (to protect the worst cases) or what you expect really "serve" is up to you.

  • Spend RDM to VMFS using Storage vMotion

I have a server that is running Windows server 2003 SP2 Enterprise edition.

This server is using a SAN EVA8000 raw device mappings. We want to get rid of the device mappings gross and use instead a regular VMFS data store.

I tried to use storage vmotion to migrate the storage of a new vmfs datastore, hoping it would pass all the data from the mapping of raw device to a new VMFS datastore.

Completion of storage vmotion to the new data store, I still connected to the server raw device mappings.

It is still possible to migrate data on a raw device mapping to the data without downtime and manual filecopy vmfs store?

Is it possible to move from physical to virtual mode?

You can turn off the virtual machine, remove the diskette RDM and readd in virtual mode.

  • How to identify if comments use thin storage provisioned on 3.5?

Someone else set up the ESX servers where I currently work.  They are standalone ESX servers.  An ESX 4.0 and an ESX 3.5.  We don't have a SAN and do not currently use VMotion or VCenter.

I came across some problems with guests, space on 4.0, because they have been configured with Thin Provisioning.  I think that it was not yet possible with 3.5, but I just wanted to check to be sure.  I have fixed most of the issue of space on 4.0 and that you just want to make sure that we don't have on 3.5.

Any help that anyone can provide as is always greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

    Dave

    Hello.

Thin provisioning capability is indeed in ESX 3.5.  The tab vDisk to the free RVTools will tell you whether or not your VMDK is thin.

    Good luck!

    Buenos dias;

Estoy configurando ESXI ver 6.0 2 u2 con servidores 2 HP proliant DL360 g9, con una cabina MSA 2040 SAS y tengo el siguiente problema if alguien me can help:

Conectado Tengo los servidores 2A the una conexion directa SAS through cabina con una tarjeta HBA241.

the cabina esta well configurada según el problema HP are as los ESXI no me reconoce los adaptadores SAS, solo me reconoce el local storage.

If necesitais mas datos solo pedirmelos.

    MUCHAS Gracias.

OK, if you do not see adapters SAS in "Storage adapters", you need to install the appropriate drivers for them.

Or you can reinstall ESXi using HP custome image suits has all the drivers for the HP hardware.

To identify the correct driver, we need to know the model of SAS adapter.

  • How to know my current used storage on my free account?

I searched but I can't find any option to see my limits and memory used. I'd appreciate if anyone can help. Thank you for your attention.

    Hi evac18580509

Free, Adobe Document Cloud offer storage space of 5 GB account holders.

However, there is no option that would display space, but manually, you can calculate the space used.

Sign in using your Adobe ID to https://cloud.acrobat.com/ & go to file-> Document Cloud tab

You will see the list of all files uploaded with their size.

    Kind regards

  • use storage question

    Hello

My STORE is the RAID 10... I need explanation of service, not shared and the storage used.

As you can see from the attached screenshot there are 19 GB used on the C: partition. E: and F: have no data.

I can't understand how the numbers of partitions refers to what I see in the VMWARE client.

    Thank you.

  • Using 'STORAGE of REUSE' with the command 'TRUNCATE TABLE '.

Because ' truncate table... reuse storage "speed up the tronquantes process?

Sometimes statements truncation takes about 30 minutes and other times just a few minutes.

What are the backs of uinsg print 'reuse storage?

The RE-USE of STORAGE clause is used to prevent the allocated storage of back to the pool.
Consider this scenario for a typical daily load of an intermediate table

    1. Empty the table of yesterday's data - TRUNCATE it
    2. Load the table with today's data - INSERT

If you load a large number of records it takes time for Oracle to allocate storage for records
When you use Oracle TRUNCATED must return the storage allocated to the pool.
Then when you INSERT new records, that oracle has to allocate the space that he could have used, but returned to the pool.

If you use TRUNCATE... RE-USE of STORAGE Oracle truncates the table but keep the storage and it will reuse the same storage
When you do the INSERT instead of having to take the time to allocate new storage.

So, there are two options to speed up ETL processes like that.
    1. use TRUNCATED... RE-USE of STORAGE and a standard INSERT query

    2. use TRUNCATE and INSERT / * + APPEND * / and make the table NOLOGGING to INSERT it. This will make a big
load. Oracle must allocate space, but the load mass will make them more effective than a standard INSERT.

-editing to update after reading the reference asktom
Storage of back to the pool takes time, so REUSE STORAGE of coding may be faster. The real advantage comes with the next load of data, however if you use a standard INSERT (and not in BULK or direct load) because Oracle failed to reallocate storage.

If RE-USE eliminates the return of storage to the pool, as well as the allocation of the new storage for the next INSERTION.

  • Redundency Server ESX/EXi using storage internal

I use ESXi to run a few rarely used VMs.  ESXi is running a server with internal storage.  ESXi having no backup capabilities, I would install another ESXi server and to keep the two synchronized in the case where the primary server goes down.

First of all, is it possible with ESXi?  Or do I need to buy an ESX license for two servers and also buy and use VMotion to keep synchronized?

Second, what is the maximum RAM ESXi or ESX 3.5 will support?

    Thank you

    Shannon

    Hello

I use ESXi to run a few rarely used VMs.  ESXi is running a server with internal storage.  ESXi having no backup capabilities, I would install another ESXi server and to keep the two synchronized in the case where the primary server goes down.

ESXi backup can be performed using the latest version of Veeam Backup. So, that exists now.

First of all, is it possible with ESXi?  Or do I need to buy an ESX license for two servers and also buy and use VMotion to keep synchronized?

You could look at VM level replication (Doubletake, etc.). VMDK (vReplicator, Veeam Backup) level replication. Or watch in Xtravirt XVS or HP Lefthand Networks VSA as alternatives.  These last two options will synchronize local storage between multiple hosts. XVS is limited to 2 guests and 1 handles LUN but VSA more. XVS is also free.

  • Is it possible to use Storage Vmotion with VMFS and RDM virtual tool?

    Hello!

You can use the tool Storage Vmotion to move a server that is running both VMFS disks and RDM virtual drives inside?

Both SAN is EMC and Vmware ESX and Virtual Center can be reached.

    Thank you!

For storage on the SAN again the two hosts will need access to the storage. You can then you copuld cold migrate the virtual computer. First, you will need to stop the virtual machine and delete the mapping of RDM. Once the virtual machine is the new data store re-create the mapping of RDM (Bothe hosts will need to access the LUN backend).

  • DB using storage ASM (Spfile)

    Hello
I installed a database for use of asm storage. I need to see the contents of the spfile for db.

When I go to the $ORACLE_HOME/dbs I have the chance to see the init file, which in turn points to a spfile as what you see below
    SPFile='+Data/asmdb/spfileasmdb.ora'

How can I view the contents of the present of a diskgroup. I checked the guest of asmcmd but I don't think that they have a possibility of 'cat' or 'vi' the file.

Can someone show me how I can see it. THX.

Either do a "create pfile = of spfile" or use the asmcmd to copy the spfile to asm on the local file system.

  • Cannot configure synchronization, can not delete 'old' sync acct, cannot create new account (email "already in use") storage = 0,0 FUBAR! Help!

About 1 month ago received the message "Server error" sync a new device (Virtual Machine), I'm sorry, but I did not copy the exact message, but remember you that the notice was to try later. Long story short, after 3 days worth of 'try later' with the same error and many users have the same error on innernetz that I decided to delete my acct sync & start reading. BAD MOVE.

When you try to delete the account I get this really fv # "cutesy" stupid $ing Mozilla message (screenshot):
    I AM NOT AMUSED.

Trying to create a new account receives «already in use»
    NO AMUSED2

Synchronization of compensation data "claims" successfully cleared. (How can that be, if the "dinosaur is the treadmill power off" at first?) Again, I'M NO FUN 3

A quota increase request reveals 0.0 k stored: NO AMUSED4

At this stage (MORE than a month later) in case you didn't notice, I am clearly NOT FUN, not to mention the being without the ability to sync my devices. Next step is to empty Firefox, but reluctantly, for Chrome or any other browser. I can NOT simply continue to use ANY browser without this vital function, and the State of my previously stored data sync 'missing' being so flippantly described BY YOU as "out of the treadmill" causes me MAJOR grief... had HUNDREDS resetting passwords, etc... let... you guessed me it... NOT AMUSED.

Please advise as soon as POSSIBLE. TYVM.

EDIT TO add: rank military security? If true, the sky help us...

I am happy to read that.

The team has pushed some changes that fixed some errors few users like you were getting while trying to delete the data from our servers.

We want to give freedom to our users to decide if they want or do not want to delete their data. In this case, technical difficulties prevented some users to do and we are sorry for this topic.

Go ahead, take into account that our servers store the data permanently and databases are cleaned if the stored data does not within a reasonable period of time.

  • Is there a way to recover the use of storage for a specific org through the vCloud API RESTful vdc?

Hello - I hope someone can tell me how to recover the amount of storage used against an assignment given to a specific VCC in the goal.  I use storage profiles in my environment and when I retrieve the details of an org vDC by AGAINST... api / / admin/vdc / < OID >, I think the result is a block with hrefs VdcstorageProfiles I can do more gets against for details on provisioned storage profiles.  However the results of these becomes later contain just a 'Limit' tag in the XML file that indicates the amount of the allowance, but still no details on usage.  The initial GET against the vDC shows its use against the allocation of memory and cpu, and I was looking to find a similar result for storage.

    Thank you!

Nevermind, I just have this one resolved, everything necessary for the query / api /? type = adminOrgVdcStorageProfile & filter = vdcName is XXXX

  • VM has reproduced the provision of storage

    Hello

I use version 4.1 on ESX hosts with iSCSI without joint and see eccentric storage provisioning.

I have several virtual machines with only one disk configured on a store of data and when you browse other data stores that I find the same size disk provisioned and 0 used.

Anyone know what causes this and how to get rid of the ghosts.

Have attached a PDF file showing the volume with the ghosts and the 2 examples of the notice the virtual machine storage

    See you soon

    David

Strange sounds.  You have the disks and files on the same logical unit number configuration?  No RDM?  No connected ISOs?  Maybe try a sVmotion and see if that fixes anything.

  • VMDK thin format and provisioning of storage

recently, I read an article on the storage provisioning, some storage provide space reclaimation tools in the windows OS, its purpose is when you delete files inside windows, windows simply do as deleted instead of the storage space,

so I have the same question about vmdk slim format, if I copy 10 GB in D drive empty, say the button Delete all the files in D.  If I use vmkfstools to export to a thin format, is that the output is close to 0 or 10 GB.

Microsoft has a tool for this (sdelete), but it is usually included in your vmware environment.

The shrink option is normally available in the virtual machine in vmware tools tray bar icon.
