VCB backup without vCenter vSphere 4.0 Standard

Is it possible to make a backup of the VCB without vCenter in the following situation:

-2 guests (not ESX) ESXi, vSphere 4.0 Standard, both with local storage

-Server Proxy VCB (with Veeam Backup and replication)

Or do I absolutely vCenter?

Should I also ESX ESXi has no service console?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hello royml, thank you very much for your interest.

1. Yes, with Veeam Backup, you can perform backups of your virtual machines without vCenter server present VCB - today, it is available in the current version of Veeam Backup. The same is true for the vStorage API based backups (API vStorage for Data Protection is the successor VCB, we fully support this mode backup in our forthcoming v4).

2. Yes, it can be ESXi - no problem here, with Veeam Backup by using the agent console service is not necessary.

Do not hesitate to download VMware and Veeam Backup test and try it - takes 5 minutes to deploy Veeam Backup and start your first job

If you have any product-specific questions - we will be happy to help you on the Veeam community forums.

  • What are the steps to upgrade to vCenter/vSphere Essentials Plus 5.0 to vCenter/vSphere 5.5 Standard?

We currently have VMWare Essentials Plus on 3 hosts, with 2 processors each. We wanted to add 2 more ESX host, so we improved our standard for vCenter/vSphere license to version 5.5. We try to find the best possible route to install 5.5 on the hosts and upgrade the server vCenter Server with our new version of the granting of licenses and software. The best initial step would be to apply the new license in the current framework 5.0 hosts and vCenter server and then upgrade the software 1 by 1? Or apply the new license to our current Server vCenter, pgrade to 5.5 server and then upgrade each host? Our Dell Rep gave me this guide (updated for VMware vSphere, Cloud Computing for companies of all sizes |) United States) and mentioned if we need assistance, contact VMWare.

    Any guidance would be appreciated.

5.0 and 5.5 must use the same keys. Then start by adding the new license key to your vCenter server then you are able to manage more than 3 guests.

Next step would be to update the server vCenter to 5.5 so it can handle actually 5.5 hosts.

Subsequently you would update the hosts.

Host licenses can also be replaced at any time during this process, because they are also specific 5.x version.

Theoretical you could even stay on 5.0 and simply replace licenses if they are not a sort of special license keys.

  • Turn on vSphere 4 Standard without vCenter

With the recommendation of a VMware Technical Account Manager, I bought vSphere 4 Standard. I use it in trial mode since for testing, and it is time to activate it. My only problem is that everything I've found so far indicates that activation must be done through vCenter.

Is it possible to activate it without vCenter? I have only a server unique vSphere, so I wasn't expecting any need by getting vCenter. I really hope that I don't have to buy another software to activate the software, I already bought.

Using the vSphere client connect to your host and click the Configuration tab and under the software it os a selection licenses and you would be able to put the licnse key -.

  • vSphere license without vCenter Server Standard

    Hello

I have ESXi (free licenses) servers. I want to make snapshots regualar usin the CLI to a virtual machine. This is not possible with the free version. Is it possible to buy a vSphere Standard edition license to activate these features, without vCenter Server?

    Thank you.

The best way to "unlock" the CLI is to get Essentials edition. No need to setup the vCenter server.

  • VMs recovery without vCenter.

    Hi all

I have 2 sites with a single vcenter.

vCenter and vSphere replication are at site 1. I've reproduced several virtual machines at site 2.

If the crash site 1, is possible to VMs recovery reproduced on the site without vCenter and VRM 2?

    Sorry my English!

    TKS,

    Luiz Terezio

    Hello Luiz,

It is not possible to recover vSphere replication replicated VMs without vCenter. If you need that kind of capability (get w/o vCenter - Inc. vCenter VMs) you might want to take a look at POS (vSphere, Data Protection). This is a backup tool that provides replication and can recover virtual machines without vCenter.

    Does that answer your question?

    See you soon!

PS: I thought your English was great, no need to apologize.

  • LACP without vcenter beauty

    Hi experts

I'm trying to configure LACP on a 5.5 esxi host. But all the guard guide talks using the web client, and that seems to come only with the vcenter. which I did not. Someone has needed the cmds CLI version or a way to just use the vsphere client?

    Thank you guys

Without vCenter and distributed switches, you can not complete LACP.  However, you can always make a hash of the IP on your vSwitch configuration and create a group LAG on your ESXi hosts in this vSwitch.  You are however limited to the period of INVESTIGATION of hash in this case regarding the load balancing / performance that will really gives you benefits only when you have a virtual machine with really big NIC requirments / assets.

If you have any questinos pelase let us know.

    Hope this has helped

  • Support for Perl SDK for ESXi vmclone.pl without vCenter

I try to use version 5.5 of SDK Perl vmclone.pl.  I have an ESXi with VM Server I want to clone remote.  However, when I try to invoke the perl scipt, I get an error "Operation is not supported by the current agent.

I was led to believe that the Perl SDK works on ESXi without vCenter Server.  Is this correct?  My mistake for another reason?

vSphere SDK for Perl can run on ESXi and vCenter, this is just an interface with the API. However, in the case of cloning that is a feature, it is only exposed when vCenter Server is in the picture. You cannot issue a clone operation directly on an ESXi host and this is why the fault was lifted.

  • Locate a virtual machine without vCenter?

We run ESXi 4.1 with vCenter 4.1.  Our vCenter server as its backend SQL are located on the virtual machines.  Recently, our SQL Server went down vCenter rendered useless.  I rose all return successfully logging into the host of the SQL Server virtual computer with my client vSphere and restart it.  However, without vCenter, I was connecting each host and verification of inventory search of the virtual machine.  Fortunately, we do not have many guests, but y at - it a script or tool I can ues to know about what a particular VM host lies when vCenter isn't available?

  • ESXi 4.1 + VMware Data Recovery 1.2 (without vCenter)

    Hello

I installed VMware Data Recovery 1.2 on my ESXi 4.1 and when I connect to VMware Data Recovery I get the message "connected to the ESX Server, automatic backups will not be made.

This means that scheduled backups only work if I receive vCenter? I without vCenter run backups manually?

That is right. vDR is configured to discover your VM inventory via vCenter. The vDR is designed to provide a central interface for your VM backup/restore via vCenter.  The cool thing about this is that vDR keep track of your virtual machines if you transfer them via vMotion, HA, DRS, etc. But, Yes, you NEED vCenter.

  • VCB Backup

    Hi all

We had some problems with the backup of a server SQL production last night, basically, we now have a snapshot called VCB-BACKUP.

Now, this server is in production for the last 24 hours from the backup failed, the question is should now consolidate the snapshot BACKUP VCB or delete it, if we delete data that has been changed/updated in the last 24 hours will be lost

Take a look at the parameters of the virtual machine. What vmdk edge the virtual HARD disk. I guess that's the instant '... 00000x.vmdk capture file. If yes you must consolidate the snapshot by using the "Delete" in the Snapshot Manager button.

If you are not sure, post a screenshot of the files in the folder of the virtual machine and the vmx file.

  • VCB backup - Linux guest OS

    Hi all

I use 4U1 ESX and VCenter4U1, then a virtual server, Redhat 5.2 Ent 64 bit installed in the virtual machine environment. I want to use a LAN free backup for this environment. I'll use backup VCB as one of the solutions.

A server, Windows 2003 64-bit, it will be like a virtual Center and a proxy server.

    My question is:

I go to the file/backup directory in the virtual machine (guest operating system Linux). How do I achieve this?

    Thanks in advance...

    ARO

    Gari

No reason to fear. Really, don't you think that I am wanting to perform all these steps manually? Everything works automatically and observing each step isolated, it turns out that to be really simple.

    1. create a RDM

    2. the mount RDM VDR and format

    3 backups

    4. stop VDR after closing window of backup (with vCenter annexes)

    5. start Backup-To-Tape device to time there (let's say it's a virtual Windows machine)

6 mount RDM with driver for ext2/ext3 filesystem (www.fs-driver.org)

7 use a third-party backup software to save the ROW content on tape

    8. turn off Windows VM backup is complete

    9. start VDR to time z

I use this process for a few weeks now and I have already tested the recovery of a band on the disc and VM disk. No complaints

  • Move a virtual machine from one host to another without vCenter Server

    Hi all

Something's been recently who raised the question on moving a virtual machine between hosts without vCenter.  I am running vSphere manage 3 blades in a c3000.  I have a shared storage iSCSI blade which all the blades connect to.  All of my virtual machines are in the same data store on the shared storage.  I'm also under vCenter Server as a virtual machine on one of the blades.  The blade that hosts the vCenter Server VM dead recently. What I was hoping to do is use vSphere Client to connect directly to one of the other blades and hover over the vCenter Server VM to one of the blades of the good, but I can't find a way to do this.  Using the browser of data store and see all of the virtual machine on the store of data without problem, but I see no way to migrate the virtual machine without vCenter server.  In the end, the blade has only had a problem of memory I corrected and managed to raise the blade but I now think of the future.  I use only Essentials, so I don't have access to vMotion and Storage vMotion.  I know that running vCenter Server is supported by Vmware, but I wonder if it's the best practices.

    Any thoughts?

Hi, I assume that you get this error because the machine is running, try to connect directly to the host and do the same with an engine off the machine.

  • VM vs VCB Backup fault tolerance?

    Hi all

I'm looking for your suggestion and advice in using the Local SATA-II empty unused for my virtual machine data store.

I have the following ESXi 4.0 build 164009 and a valid license of vSphere Essentials license, so I could use VCB, but the problem is that using NBD of the SAN in the backup server is much too slow :-| it took 55 hours to backup the whole score of VMFS 1 TB.

and now, I think that rather than using the backup solution is it possible to clone the virtual machine on the

fly to more than 2 store data such as cluster service fault tolerance? (in this case to the business data store and the)

SAN_VMFS) in case there is a failure in the SAN, the virtual machine can run the

    Local data store

    Kind regards

    AWT

Backup VM with VCB, backup system disks together just with VCB and backup of the data with the specialized software. For example if you have Oracle - place Oracle DB on another VMDK/RDM and backup tools with Oracle via 1Gbit link.

Fault tolerance requires SAN and saves you more failure of the host only, not SAN failure.

  • vCenter / Vsphere 4.0 data recovery

I have to do a small infrastructure:

    n.2 vmware ESX vsphere 4.0

    n.1 iSCSI storage

    n.1 vcenter server.

Can I use entire vmware vcenter server data recovery? I have an another iscsi storage to make backups.

    Best regards.

Yes, vCenter vSphere 4.0 is required for vDR and will be necessary. Take a look at the comparison table of different editions: http://www.vmware.com/products/vsphere/buy/editions_comparison.html

Most resembles the way forward or you can use advanced or higher if you need more features.

You can also buy the vDR separately as a la carte in question, take a look at how to buy for vDR: http://www.vmware.com/products/data-recovery/buy.html

  • Import the VCB backups in VMWare Server 2.0 Automatic

    Hello

I had two questions, on which I was wondering...

The real thing, I was wondering all is if someone made a script, fixing up the release of VCB, so it is bootable from a standard VMWare Server 2?

(I think / hope someone has already made as part of an AIP or something...)

The problem is that VCB adds the path of SCSI in the VMDK-filenames, but it does not add it to the VMX file.

If these are mapped to the other the VMX or by renaming the files the VCB is bootable in Server VMW 2.

(but 'less restoreable' of VCB on the other hand...)

This would help me a lot, couse then I could put my VCB backups to an external drive and give the drive to our suppliers

then they test things in the production environment. This could easily be written, but I don't want to invent wheels all my life,

so if others have this I appreciate real...

The second thing I was wondering about is if it is the right part of the forum for these questions, or if they should go under something else...

    Colombia-British

Since the change of name is always following the same convention, I do not think that it is necessary to read the VMX file.

This script deletes the prefix «scsi...» "of all the VMDK files.

    $VCBfolder =
    $vm = # Subfolder in directory $VCBfolder

    $vmPath = $VCBfolder + "\" + $vm
    $oldDir = (pwd).Path
    cd $vmPath
    $files = @(Get-Item -Path "*" -Filter "*.vmdk")
    foreach($file in $files){
      $dummy = $file.Name -match "^scsi\d*-\d*-\d*-(.*\.vmdk)"
      Rename-Item $file.Name $matches[1]
    }
