VCB proxy on a virtual machine?

Hello

You may want to put a VCB proxy on a virtual machine.  I understand that this is possible if the storage is on iSCSI or NFS, but unfortunately, we on the CF.

Is this possible?

Thank you!

  • VCB backup snapshot or virtual machine?

    Hello

Workflow of VCB, I read these procedures frequently and I'm confused by what backup software is stored:

".....  Put the virtual machine snapshot mode and take a snapshot.

.. .Mount snapshot of the VM for the proxy backup (to win)

.. software backup .the performs a regular backup of the snapshot of the virtual machine moving data from backup media... »

So I wonder what backup software is saved: any virtual machine or virtual machine snapshot? and why?

And for linux, it will export (copy) the snapshot of the machine the VCB proxy virtual of the SAN. If a single snapshot is stored to the proxy of VCB mount point, why VCB proxy must have enough space to contain the largest virtual machine?

Can someone give me some clarification?

    LAN

    To clearify:

In the world of VMware ESX, a snapshot is the same as the 'entire virtual machine' as you say. It's just the disks 'frozen' in a State of know. VCB can then move up and back up this disk (or copy it to the VCB proxy) while the virtual machine is placing the changed data in the temporary file. Some people refer to this temporary file that the file 'snapshot', while the other, see you in the frozen file as the 'snapshot' file, and creates confusion for users/students. A 'snapshot' is simply the functionality described above.

When the backup action is finalized, VCB tells vCenter to "remove the snapshot" which actually means that the data in the temporary file are merged with the 'frozen' disk that is then back 'defrosted' and put into live operation.

  • The proxy on a virtual machine configuration

    Hi all

I am facing the following situation on VMware Server 2: I intend to set up a proxy server on a virtual machine VM Server 2.0. On the host, I have installed two physical network cards (1 connected in bridged local area network internal, 1 connected network as the external firewall interface). The internal network is working properly, no problem. But I have trouble finding the right configuration for the external interface. Should I use a guest only network configuration? And if: how to configure the IP settings on the host and the VM? Or NAT would be the best solution? Maybe it's important to mention that the external interface should only be used for the connection between the proxy and firewall. So my idea is to attribute this interface directly to the virtual (proxy server) computer. Maybe some of you want to share examples of similar facilities.

    Thank you!

    Cheers, Matthias

I recommend you to read the guide, especially chapter 11.

    http://www.VMware.com/PDF/vmserver2.PDF

Note that VMnet8 is usually the NAT interface that you don't want your proxy. One of the bridged VMnet0 adapters, the other will depend on what other dapaters that you have defined. In the "Automatic bypass" tab of the virtual network Editor, automatic bypass must be deselected and applied it. Then in the "Host Virtual Network Mapping" tab, you should be able to find two free VMnet * maps (leave host only and NAT only) that can be mapped to your two physical network adapters. These can then be assigned to the virtual machines via the web INTERFACE. If you are still unable to work, please send screenshots of your settings of the virtual network Editor, ' ipconfig/all' of the host and the .vmx for VM proxy.

In fact, using VCB 1.5 / ESX3.5 / VC 2.5 supports VCB running within a virtual machine. You can use iSCSI, NBD or Hot - Add mode.

  • Ability to create virtual server Proxy VCB San fiber in a Machine?

    Hi all

I was wondering if it is possible to create a Virtual Machine to be a VCB Proxy to a SAN Fibre network.  I see no way to emulate a fiber on the virutal machine controller then how will you proceed to do this if possible?

I don't think that this is possible - if it is the FC SAN - since you cannot load an HBA driver within the virtual machine

If a physical box would still be necessary for CF vcb backups.

  • Change tracking (CTK) block is supported for this virtual machine, but was refused. This will increase the CPU proxy and consumption of IOP.

I have problems with a client of VMware image-level in an EMC Avamar backup.  So far, we have not been able to find information about this message in the backup log file.  It is originally the backup to take a very long period of time (on average 10-11 hours).

2014-02-28 14:20:57 avvcbimage < 14681 > Info: change tracking (CTK) block is supported for this virtual machine, but was refused. This will increase the CPU proxy and consumption of IOP.

We cannot determine why CBT is "denied".  Has anyone here run across this issue before or seen any other type of backup VMware image have denied CBT?

Everything I checked watch that CBT is successfully activated since the file vmx for the customer to the Avamar config.

ESXi host is Enterprise Plus 4.1.0 260247

After spending some time on this issue, the ultimate resolution withdrew the Avamar vm and then add it again.  After that, CBT began to work properly.  It seems that there is a parameter that has been 'stuck' pertaining to this virtual machine that wasn't behaving properly.

  • VCB snap only the disk system to a virtual machine.

I use as my ESX 3.5 VC 2.5 backup and Avamar.  I do backup with VCB 1.5.

I have a virtual machine with a 20 GB OS drive and 500 GB data disk (linux).

I would like to VCB the only BONES of some of my vm and not others drive much more major data on the disks on the virtual machine.

Is there a way to only snap (a disk) the smallest disk to the virtual machine OS so I don't have to have a disk of temp VCB is huge?

I can't wait to snap 520 GB just to get the 20 GB that I need.

I realize that avamar can filter up to only enter the 20 but it's after the breakup, I don't want to break the 500.

    Thank you

You can set the data to persistent disk independent. In this way, that it is not affected by snapshots.

Take a look at http://www.yellow-bricks.com/2008/11/03/vcb-and-independent-disks/ (and its links). This is an old article, but it should still work.

    Hello

I have three ESX 3.5 in a cluster with an EVA SAN. When I do my backup, I get this message for some of my virtual machines. The majority of my backup work well...

PrepareForBackup() could not prepare TermServer for backup, returned the error 16

Pre order is: "C:\Program VMware Consolidated Backup Framework\backupexec\Green-pre-backup.bat" green-Termserver TermServer - fullVM

In Virtual Center, the name of the virtual computer is TermServer, the folder on my SAN is TermServer and all files, named according to the name of vm, have 'TermServer' in their name.

    Any idea?

I think that you have a DNS problem, you use - ipaddr in config. file for VCB?

Try ping TermServer, you can resolve the name?

  • Restore virtual machines with Netbackup and VCB

I just Netbackup 6.5.2 and using VCB 1.5.  When I create my backups, it makes the .img files.  When I try to restore using Netbackup, it won't recognize backups from windows NT and not Flash.  And VM converter does not recognize the .img files.  So, how can I restore, what am I am I doing wrong?

Hello.  The NetBackup .img files are not accessible directly.  They are used internally by NetBackup.

When the only restore files vmdk (virtual machine complete), NetBackup 6.5.2 supports two types of restorations.  First of all, you can automatically perform a restore of the entire virtual machine by using the free VMware Converter component.  The second method involves all first restore VMware vmdk and then manually by your restoration.

These processes are described in the document of NetBackup 6.5.2 update which can be found here:

  • Backup of virtual machines with question VCB

    Hi all

When you backup a VM with VCB and it has the virtual disk that are size fixed say 100 GB, does that mean when you save this VM with VCB, you will need 100 GB of space to back that up?  If this is the case is that you can set VCB to backup the virtual drive but only backup, which is acutally used anyway.  Say so, you have a virtual machine with 100 GB fixed disk but it only really uses 20 GB of available space is possible to get VCB to backup only the 20 GB of the virutal disk or you must take it all when it comes to a fixed disk?

As long as you drop the flags of the export, you will get a backup of only the space used for a backup of fullvm. SO, in your example, you have a backup of a little more than 20 GB, 100 GB.

    Flags of the export drive:

-M: If, together, the disk is exported in a single file (monolithic).

When it is off (default), the disc is divided into several files of 2 GB.

-F: so together, the disk is exported in the form of disc "flat", with no optimization.

When it is off (default), the exported files disk will be more compact than

unused space in the disk image is not included in the exported file.

  • Virtual machine allows you to re-creating virtual disks

I have a virtual machine running as a server VCB proxy for arcserve backup under iSCSI r15. the system has three hard drives, today I noticed that I had a very small amount of space on my data store that extract of these records. It seems that there are three copies of each virtual disk in the data store, taking up all my space. Why are they here? I need to get this machine to only have a copy of each virtual disk.

Perhaps mean you that your have several active snapshots?

  • What is the best way to backup of virtual machines on a standalone ESX with the data store local

    Hello

I want to save the virtual machines on a host ESX autonomous. and all of these virtual machines is the local data store.  What is the best way to save these virtual machines in this situation?

And probably we don't provision VTL on the local data center, so it is possible to use VCB to backup? And VCB is a good choice compared to the traditional method that installs the backup client in each virtual machine?   Because I think that in this situation with the data store local, it cannot not reduced the load on ESX hosts and network overhead can be avoided.

    Thank you!

    > 1. VCB usable remote tape library? I mean it's not local library and uses the tape library to another network data center.

VCB is completely unrelated to the tape library, it is a framework, not a backup solution. If your standard backup software can work with the remote tape library you can try it to ungrateful with VCB.

    > 2. what the difference bwteen hot - added NBD and modes if there is that an ESX host with store data local and want to use a virtual machine like VCB proxy? I think that they are the same: the VCB proxy read data through the I/O of the ESX host stack in this situation.

NBD works on network and the backup traffic goes through the service console connection. Hot add uses special machine for assistance to connect vmdk to and uses of e/s disk stack instead of e/s network.

  • Presentation of RDL to VCB proxy question

    Hello

I have my windows proxy setup and I have a bunch of stores of SAN data presented to the proxy that allows me to backup virtual machines that reside on them.

I disabled automount and have rubbed the disks

When I present a record gross lun the proxy with the same number LUN as the ESX hosts, it does not correctly appear in disk management. If the drive is configured as dynamic on the server that uses it, it will appear as not configured on the proxy server and import the disk it will drop the original host. If I cange of base on the original host and present again to the proxy it is detected but is not correctly displayed in disk management.

At this point, I can't back up this disk usuing VCB - anyone got any ideas on how I can get of RDL to work properly with VCB. Basic or dynamic disks is better?

    Thank you.

André already mentioned 'basic disks are better. " In fact the dynamic disks are not supported. You can reach the vmount vmware and vmware-vlun newspapers? Also run vcbMounter manually with "-L 6" option and refer to a text file and fix that? Receiving an error message is no help. What EXACTLY is the error?

  • Backup Exec and VCB proxy server configuration

    Hello

I am installing Backup Exec to back up my virtual machine on an ESX Server, but I get the following error:

    *Backup- VMVCB::ESX01VCGuestVm(DC)ha-datacenter(DC)vmserver03*

V-79-57344-38220 - Backup of the virtual machine 'server03' failed. VMware VCB framework reported the following error

Error: Failed to open the disk: Cannot access a SAN/iSCSI LUN backing this virtual disk. (Hint: Option "-m ndb" swtiches vcbMounter to network base disk access if this is what you want.)

It's my setup. I have an ESX Server connected to a San. I store my images on the SAN. I have Backup Exec installed on our file server that is also attached to the SAN and try to use this server as my VCB proxy server. I have installed on my server BE VCB framework and the enterprise Converter 3.03. I have setup a temporary staging that the server can access to place its snapshots on.

My BE\VCB proxy server cannot access the SAN LUN that holds the images. My understanding of the process is that of BE I navigate on the ESX Server and select the virtual machine, I want to backup, and because the ESX Server can access the SAN LUNS where VM images are stored throughout the process of alignment of the image and place in the temporary storage area so that BE can then throw tape should work.

Can someone help to solve my problem?

    See you soon

Yes, it is the intention of the VCB.  Take the resources needed to run the backup out of the host and on the VCB proxy server.  You can define VCB to use the 'LAN' mode which backs the service console of the virtual computer on the network, but it is slower and puts more pressure on the host.

Make sure you carefully follow the VCB document.  There are some things you need to do on the proxy before presenting the LUN as cutting diskpart automount. If you don't there is a chance that the lun might get corrupted and your VM would go bye-bye.

  • Strategies of backup for virtual machines 200 +?

    Hello

I have a question for you guys - if you have more than 100 virtual machines in your environment or your virtual machines are large & gt; 50GB, so what's your backup strategy for them? Are you using the VCB to backup all, or maybe you install the normal backup client (Veritas, CA, etc.) and backup via LAN? Or maybe you have other solutions for backup process?

If you VCB, you have more than one VCB proxy? Or you start all on one server (a single script of vcb?)

    Thanks for any info.

I should also mention that we use traditional backup for file servers agents over 200 Gb.  Ranger has a level file restore option, but it can take hours to reopen the file because it is compressed during the backup process.  I would also like to stress that the file formats shown in the screenshot are files zipped after the backup.  the size depends on how much space is used in the VMDK file.  some of the virtual machine listed are 50 to 70 GB vmdk files which are compressed within a 15 GB.  Also, when you are restoring is an exact replica of the original.  Some of my 50 GB VM restore tests were less than 30 minutes.
